Group type: Online - Discord voice/camera (optional, but I find it helps interactions) + using avrae dice bot
Experience: In the first instance of running this campaign, I am looking for adult players (18+) But also see below - I am looking for 3 different roles for players
Location/Timezone: GMT/UK Time - Based in UK, campaign will be in English
Schedule: Weekly session on Friday nights from 21:00 to 1am (GMT/UK time zone). First play session Friday 19th Feb (This will largely be a meet & greet, character introductions and finalisations plus intro session)
Roles sought: The aim is for a steady group of 6 mature and friendly players. I would really like to ensure the balance in the group is well rounded, and for that reason I am looking for 3 types of players (ideally 2 of each) Experienced support: You have played a good amount of D&D, and will be able to devote some time to supporting other players in the group with setting up characters, role-playing, helping with back stories, tips & tricks. Thus, you need some patience, and willingness to work with other players outside of session.
Experienced player: You have some experience in playing D&D and setting up a well described character, and actively contributing to the sessions.
Inexperienced player: You might not have played much D&D, or have never played an online session, but you have interest and willingness to commit to a campaign. Please note that it might be a good idea to have tried playing a one-shot game or two first, or have an idea of how the game works (e.g. you can access the basic rules at least and understand the fundamental mechanics of the game)
Game style: As a campaign there will be a balance between RP and combat - broadly speaking a 60/40 split, but it will vary greatly by session, so don't expect every session to be the same. It's key that the experience is enjoyable for everyone, so I would rather go slow at the beginning to allow a group to work out how best to work together and RP together than rush along the story line.
About the Campaign: The Mark of Hallandor is designed to be a fairly long campaign (to be honest, I am still writing it, but have more than enough material for 3-4 months of weekly sessions at this point - and these sessions will help play-test the campaign as well). There is room for appending one-shots in certain positions of the campaign, so there could be possibilities for any experienced player that would like to DM or even a Guest DM for example.
The campaign is set in Forgotten Realms, starting with Level 1 characters. To help newer players, and to keep the campaign accessible, I will start the campaign with races and classes from PHB only. Apart from that, the only real hint is that the team will benefit from having at least one elf in the group (but if we end up without one, that can be adjusted). I will use XP progressing, but there will be awards at end of chapters and side quests for approach, roleplay, and how the group solves key decisions in addition to combat based XP. So in some ways it's a semi-milestone system, but gives more flexibility.
The campaign is built around a group of fundamentally decent characters - so evil characters might struggle in this campaign.
For practical reasons, we're likely to share information during sessions even if it sometimes would only be for part of the group (e.g. part of group has conversations with NPCs), and so it is important that you are willing to invest in considering what your character knows rather than what you know as a player. This can be challenging, and will require some commitment to the role-play aspect.
About me (DM): I am a 46 year old guy living in Scotland. I "grew up" with D&D 1e and AD&D followed by a long foray into the Shadowrun universe and RPG system. I DM'ed in all of these, and have kept an eye on the world of D&D over the years. I have recently rekindled the love and acquired the books etc. and want to get back to DM'ing. I have been running a play by post game for a little while to build up a bit of experience with dice bots, discord, etc. My DM style is centred on having an experience that the group enjoys - we're in it together. I will however also insist on some of the details like making sure you carry the right equipment (e.g. you don't get to set off on an 8 day trek without rations and then pay coin halfway through because you meant to buy rations but forgot to mention it), and that your personality traits and abilities will affect how you react to the world - sometimes in ways that will override rules.
General intro to the campaign: Long ago, in the deepest part of the forest stood a small tower, built from neatly shaped stones, coverd in vines. A single little window is lit up in the middle of the night, and in the room behind this window, an elf is working feverishly. He is scribbling into a heavy leatherboud book. His quill is flying across the page while his eyes are scanning scrolls and notes scattered on the table before him. The night is chill, and he pauses briefly to gather his moss-green robe around him, before resuming the frantic writing. Time passes, the stars wheel across a clear sky in a small gap in the canopy of large, old trees that surround the tower. Finally, he lifts the pen, and stares at the page. "Yes...that's it...this will work" he mumbles in exhausted satisfaction. At that moment, sound carries from a room below - a cild is crying. Hallandor rises from his seat and moves down the worn wooden stairwell, and reaches his son's room. "Did you dream in your rest?" he asks his young son, who jsut hugs his father. Settling the boy down, he moves through to another room. His wife is lying on a large circular bed , smiling at him "I see you managed to pull yourself away from your studies?" Hallandor lies down next to her with a little groan and nods. "I did...and it's done....now I can be with you my darling.....always".
Joining the campaign: Well done if you made it this far down the page and still reading! Before we launch into discords etc. I would really prefer to just get a message here on dndbeyond. Please cover the following in your message and use subject "Mark of Hallandor" in your message:
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it - Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in? - Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you. - Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's) - What attracted you to apply for this campaign? - Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
I will get in touch with you one i get your message and I will respond to everyone who applies. In the meantime, I will be setting up the discord server so it's ready when we have a group put together
I look forward to hearing from you! May you all roll natural 20's
PS: If you have questions about format, content, etc please feel free to post the questions below in this thread,
your campaign sounds great, I would be very interested in playing. im an experienced player of 3yrs on a regular basis, i even DM a homebrew campaign.
To answer your questions;
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it - yes, i have discord. i have heard no complaints about mic/camera quality. - Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in? Experienced support and Experienced player - Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you. Fridays work great from me, i did play in a friday game but it didnt work out and have been looking for a new friday campaign. - Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's) - actually started 3yrs ago this month ha, its been a mix of Discord/Skype (chat) and Roll20(maps).. - What attracted you to apply for this campaign? tbh you sound like an experienced DM that wants to have fun along with the PCs and mentioned that ive been looking for a friday session. - Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good) - i tend fall into the Tank or healer rolls so would like to try something different like Sorcerer or ranger, but if there are new players that want to pick those classes i really dont mind picking something different.
oh, and a little about me, 34 from Ireland so in the same TZ and yes found D&D later in life but better late than never haha
Mark of Hallandor Hi I would like to give it a shot but I am a bit new to dnd only about three weeks to a month of playing but I have been interested as of last year and had plane don playing then but covid struck so I was unable to do so with my friends until I learned of dnd beyond.
-My mic is a bit quiet and discord works fine though I don plan on buying a new mic in a week or so to see if its better a turtle beach one if mine isn't good enough
-I an semi inexperienced as I have played in a few camps for three sessions in one 10 in another and 2 in another but the dms for two went on hiatus so I have more free days now.
-I am est but normally have Fridays off so as long as I have a heads up I should be able to always make a session as it would be around 4pm to 8pm my time
-I have friends that play dnd so I learned a bit from them and have watched videos about it. i have a few campaigns im in 2 currently but not on friday so it should work out and have used discord for a while so I am a bit familiar with it while I also have d20.
-I like to try out a new story and see where it can go see where it leads and go on an adventure, plus might make some friends along the way and learn to be better at dnd. Plus from your intro it seems you have a great idea with your story and want to see where it goes
-It depends, I have two ideas one is a rouge goblin with a dark back story and the other is a half orc barbarian that comes from a line of adventurers
You can put a subject line in a reply, but Mark of Hallandor
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it
I have Discord on both my laptop and my phone, but voice is sometimes tricky on my laptop so I just put my airpods in and use my phone. To be honest, in my other D&D games I use my laptop with Roll 20 to broadcast both voice and video, but whatever way you want to do it, I'll make it work.
- Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in?
Well I've been playing and DMing for about a year so I'd say I'm somewhere in between Experienced Player and Experienced Support.
- Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you.
Day works for me and I'm also UK based so time isn't an issue, but earlier would be preferred so I don't keep the neighbours up, but I can always curb my enthusiasm towards the end of the session.
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
So as I said, I’ve been playing for a year and play three sessions a week two being a DM and one being a player. All of those sessions use Roll20 (except when Roll20 is glitching then we use both Roll20 and Discord), but don’t have any experience with other VTT’s.
- What attracted you to apply for this campaign?
As Peter said, you sound like an experienced DM who knows what he’s doing, and I’ve had so many bad experiences with flaky and unreliable DM’s in the past. I’m also much more attracted to homebrew campaigns as they just feel more natural.
- Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
I’m the opposite to Peter actually and usually fill support / distance fighter roles, so I’d very much like to be a Barbarian as I’ve never been one before.
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it
I have a good quality microphone and camera and am comfortable with showing my face and talking with others. - Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in?
I am interested in the Inexperienced player. - Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you.
It will work for me - Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
I've watched and read a lot of D&D books and videos but have never had an actual campaign before, I played with some friends in Highschool but I was the only one interested, the rest would try and kill each other or just sit on there phones. I would love to play some D&D and would be super grateful for the opportunity to finally play some real D&D, I can use Discord but am open to downloading whatever voice chat is preferred with the party/DM - What attracted you to apply for this campaign?
It will be my first campaign and will give me what I've wanted for so long, a chance to play some real D&D. I want to meet new people and I wanna see how I can create characters that I can Roleplay and change over time. - Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
I was considering a Cleric or Barbarian. If it is needed in the group ill play cleric but if it is my preference I was going to have a Brass Dragonborn Barbarian named Krilgar who as a child had his village slaughtered and himself was forced into slavery, Years of hard labor from mining in the mineral mines or chopping down trees has trained his body into a great build that defines him as a barbarian. He was leased and rented out for his services mostly hard labor, he was rented by a blacksmith who took a liking to him and tried to purchase Krilgar, When the slavers refused he used his blacksmithing skills to free Krilgar. The slavers killed the blacksmith and burned his house to the ground, Krilgar has used this to fuel his rage as a barbarian. He despises slavery and the thought of it gets his blood boiling.
My Name is Holden and i would greatly appreciate this opportunity to play D&D
Gareth here, excited to find a UK based campaign - at last i don't have to convert time zones!
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it Yes indeed, camera and mic are very decent quality. Been using them for work Teams meetings as well as Discord and Roll20 adventures.
- Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in? Definitely in the "happy to mentor" category
- Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you. It's better than perfect. I have been looking for a Friday evening slot for ages, and this wil lead nicely to a 1am adventure that I play with friends in America (thanks be to all the pantheon for the internet, eh?)
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's) Started in the 80s with the good old red basic set and blue "expert" set. Switched to AD&D as soon as I realised it was available. Carried on playing through school, but actually switched to RuneQuest at uni. Then life got in the way. But now I have rediscovered D&D, I have fallen back in love, and I can't get enough. Been using Roll20 a lot, but also exposed to Astral and (to a lesser extent) Fantasy Grounds.
- What attracted you to apply for this campaign? I've had a glaring open space in my Friday nights for a while now, keen to fill it with some D&D. Also, a UK adventure is quite a rarity, so that's another good tick. Your advert shows that you have clearly put some thought into this process, above and beyond what you have already put into the creation of your world. I also get the idea that there will be scope for character development through RP, so it's all good.
- Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good) I've often found it is better to leave the simper roles for the new starters, so they don't get swamped with too much early on. So I would probably aim for a Ranger or Druid at this point. Race wise I am so easy it's probably frowned upon in most conventional societies, so Elf certainly won't be an issue if it's still required. Having said that, I am experienced enough to pick up a utility function is party balance dictates. So long as I don't have to be a 1-dimensional murder hobo, it's fine by me.
Hope that's enough info for now. You can get me in here or in Discord on GWWildCard#3255
Hello i am here to say i am intrested in your campaign ive been playing dnd ever since highschool and i am to join your campaign anyway on with the questions
Do i have a working mic and camera: the answer is yes i do have a mic and camera but no i wont be using it cuz i dont feel condertable doing a session with my face exposed and all
Background experiance on discord and VTT's: i have been spending most dnd time on amino it's then when i feel more experiance when i go to discord for the remainder of my dnd experiance also i also dabbled with roll20 cant say im a expert on that but hey im still learning
What attracted to me for this campaign?: although i didnt get the sense on where we the players fit in to this but the teaser for this campaign give me a sense of mystery and errer vibes making me curious on whats the deal with hallandor and his family
My early types of character i would play: well i would usally play a character whose been wrong or the underdog trying to make the world know that he is more then a bumbling idiot
Finally sceduling: despite the timezone is diffrent to mine (which is est) i think i can manage this cuz compaired to the time(which is 21:00) and mine which is 4:00 pm and on a friday (which i am free) yeah i can attend that time
Hi! My name is Laura, I'm 31 from the UK so the times are certainly not a problem! :)
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it Yes to all the above - Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in? I would be best suited to Experienced Player - Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you. All good with me! - Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's) Played d&d for 4-5 years as well as other systems. Discord/Skype and Roll20 are what I have used to play - What attracted you to apply for this campaign? The content sounds super interesting, and I love the idea of jumping into a well developed world which seems to have plenty of opportunity for character development and roleplay. I also like the idea that personality traits and abilities will dictate outcomes as much as rules and dice rolls, it helps make the world feel a bit more fleshed out when other options can impact the world and the PCs - Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good) (Happy to be an Elf for any of the ideas if it helps) 1. Tiefling Bard named Saga - A Tiefling with an interest with recording the stories of people who do great deeds but do not make the history books like heroes and villains do, and spreading their tales around other places. She represents these unsung heroes by tattooing her skin with icons with represent their tales so they are not forgotten 2. Water Genasi or Triton Bard named Lorelei - Backstory is still a bit of a wip, but I imagine her to be quite the CC/Support Bard with charm/frighten - A sort of 'sirens call' character 3. I would be ok to fill in the role of more of a full-healer if there would be any allowance for the Divine Soul Sorcerer or Celestial Warlock. I respect the PHB ruling so not a problem at all if that is ok, but thought I would just let you know incase the role is needed :) I just have a preference to those classes (and prior experience) than to Clerics
Hi I'm Juliette or Quen on discord hi wanted to apply for your Mark of Hallandor campaign.
I'm an experienced dm and player roleplaying is the sole reason I started dnd 5years ago and it hasn't changed since. I love creating a morally grey character who connects with the world and party, character development is one of my favorite tools to use in rp since the growth of someone in dnd can be one of my favorite things to see.
The time perfectly works for me I'll never be busy on Friday evenings and why not spend it with a fun dnd group haha. I've been playing online dnd since quarantine since before I used to do it with friends but now it's with some new ones on discord and roll20. I do want to experiment more with using a camera since a do a lot of mannerisms and movements while rping which I don't get to use when I'm doing voice only.
The campaign attracted me since first I like the small story intro you wrote it can create some unique characters to fit into your world and second is the mix between old and new players since I enjoy watching a new person learn and love the art of dnd.
I do have several character ideas I want to explore id like to create a more so strange character she wouldn't specifically be chaotic but more so new to the society a sort of sheltered life. Each of the characters with the core theme I would handle differently since I was either gonna do a druid living in a secluded clan which would get destroy by local human nearby which would make her scared of humans but also have a central theme of trust and care. I was also thinking of a more scholar type they would have grown up in a brothel where they lost contact with their mother who left them as a child after the lord who abandoned her was repulsed that she would keep the child. The child would grow up with strange abilities they hoarded up all their mana until it busted out by accident or pure emotion. They would eventually be rescued by a local scholar who gave them a device to control it and he sends them to a tower. These are just general character ideas I would explore them further and edit them to the world. Also moral grey and growth are my favorite things to put into my character next to mannerisms.
I hope you enjoy the campaign if I don't get chosen. But I do hope to be their c:
Hi! My name is Danni, I'm 24 and from Germany, and looking to dive into DND.
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it
I have a decent webcam and mic (both relatively new but well tested), and I would prefer to use the camera (I think it helps with immersion and interactions!)
- Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in?
I fit the "Inexperienced Player" role, as I have yet to play a campaign, but I am really excited to commit to something long term and have recently been doing a deep dive into the rules and watching people play to get the hang of how things work.
- Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you.
Friday evenings work perfectly for me, as I'm GMT+1.
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
I'm brand new to playing, this would be my first campaign. I have experience playing games over Discord (but not pen and paper).
- What attracted you to apply for this campaign?
I'm looking for a steady group as well, and the fact that you are looking to start slow to ensure that the group works well together sounds perfect for getting to know one another and finding the best way to approach things. I love big worlds with detailed lore, and the detailed post that you have written makes me feel like you will create and immerse players into a fantastic world, also proven by your experience. Your description in the intro also evokes a clear image for me, which is exactly the kind of experience I would be looking for.
- Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
I am open to play a character that fits best with the team - as I've not played before I don't have a preference. I would lean towards magic wielders, particularly favouring wisdom or intelligence, however, with chaotic neutral or chaotic good alignment (likely chaotic good as you mention that this campaign is best suited to fundamentally decent characters). I like Elf, half-Elf and Tiefling characters in particular. I like the idea of a troubled background, for instance a digraced scholar, a half-Elf hidden by their parent growing up wary of people, a character from a disgraced noble family trying to ensure that people don't know who they are.
Hello all - Apologies to all those that have replied that I have not gotten back to you all yet - I will shortly (I had a powercut while the applications have bee coming in - really bad timing!)
So will update the thread now and clsoe for applications - but those that already sent me messages or posted here, will hear back form me.

Mark of Hallandor
Hi I would like to give it a shot but I am a bit new to dnd only about three weeks to a month of playing but I have been interested as of last year and had plane don playing then but covid struck so I was unable to do so with my friends until I learned of dnd beyond.
-
Hey Overchord,
You can put a subject line in a reply, but Mark of Hallandor

It will work for me
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
I've watched and read a lot of D&D books and videos but have never had an actual campaign before, I played with some friends in Highschool but I was the only one interested, the rest would try and kill each other or just sit on there phones. I would love to play some D&D and would be super grateful for the opportunity to finally play some real D&D, I can use Discord but am open to downloading whatever voice chat is preferred with the party/DM
- What attracted you to apply for this campaign?
Good evening
Gareth here, excited to find a UK based campaign - at last i don't have to convert time zones!
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it
Yes indeed, camera and mic are very decent quality.
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
Started in the 80s with the good old red basic set and blue "expert" set.
- Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
I've often found it is better to leave the simper roles for the new starters, so they don't get swamped with too much early on.
Keep it crit :-)
Finally sceduling: despite the timezone is diffrent to mine (which is est) i think i can manage this cuz compaired to the time(which is 21:00) and mine which is 4:00 pm and on a friday (which i am free) yeah i can attend that time
Also my player role is experiance
My discord: Ginthehunter667#4707
Hi! My name is Laura, I'm 31 from the UK so the times are certainly not a problem! :)
- Do you have a working and tested, decent quality microphone and discord? Also useful to know if you have camera/want to use it
Yes to all the above
- Which of the 3 player roles described are you interested in?
I would be best suited to Experienced Player
- Note the time slot - it is not going to change significantly, so confirm that this time works for you.
All good with me!
- Background and experience with D&D, and digital platforms for playing on (Discord/VTT's)
Played d&d for 4-5 years as well as other systems. Discord/Skype and Roll20 are what I have used to play
- What attracted you to apply for this campaign?
The content sounds super interesting, and I love the idea of jumping into a well developed world which seems to have plenty of opportunity for character development and roleplay. I also like the idea that personality traits and abilities will dictate outcomes as much as rules and dice rolls, it helps make the world feel a bit more fleshed out when other options can impact the world and the PCs
- Early ideas for the type of character you would like to play (not binding - but considering you are entering a longer term campaign, making some thoughts on this would be good)
(Happy to be an Elf for any of the ideas if it helps)
1. Tiefling Bard named Saga - A Tiefling with an interest with recording the stories of people who do great deeds but do not make the history books like heroes and villains do, and spreading their tales around other places. She represents these unsung heroes by tattooing her skin with icons with represent their tales so they are not forgotten
2. Water Genasi or Triton Bard named Lorelei - Backstory is still a bit of a wip, but I imagine her to be quite the CC/Support Bard with charm/frighten - A sort of 'sirens call' character
Thanks!
I also put the same one in a private message
Thank you very much!
Hello all - Apologies to all those that have replied that I have not gotten back to you all yet - I will shortly (I had a powercut while the applications have bee coming in - really bad timing!)
