The mask is pure flavor and fluff. The description even says as much "usually don robes with deep cowls, and they often conceal their faces with masks" and "You also gain a special mask, which you often wear when using the features of this subclass".
You do get a mask for free but it is not requird. It is not like a spell focus or some sort of odd ki focus.
It wouldn't be required because as previously mentioned it is just mentioned for flavor and to add to your character if you want too, but it could possibly add more to your story.
I mean you could just be wearing a mask when your other personality takes over, or do something to that degree. I almost made my monk a way of mercy monk for the campaign he is but switch to a different subclass (one of the group plays a cleric and she gets highly "upset" sometimes at thought of needing healing from another source).
