My character is a monk with good stats all around and I want to multiclass when we get to that point. our party consists of a Dragonborn monk (me), a Warlock, a Barbarian, and a Ranger. The warlock and ranger have already said that they aren't going to prioritize support spells over cool damage spells, so my DM said that I could multiclass if I work in a way into my backstory, which I'm fine with because I love writing backgrounds. The only thing is, is that because of my previous characters all being bards, I'm tired of being a bard and want to be more than that. My alignment is Lawful Neutral. Any suggestions for a spellcasting class for multiclassing?
First thoughts would be a cleric or druid if you want to multi into a casting class for support spells. They both use wisdom for casting, and I assume that you have a decent score already as a monk.
Other than that though, it might help to know more about your character? Other casters might be a good fit depending on how all round your stats are, and the monastic tradition would probably help fit a caster to them.
On personal experience, I've cooked up an edgelord assassin that is a ranger/shadow monk hybrid (my others have all been LG holy types!) who teleports around and shoots dudes with a longbow. Not great on support side though!
I would say small dip in cleric. Monk can get alot millage from simply bless themself and if you ever get lvl 14 monk diamond it should be easy to succeed saving throws. Or you could buff yourself with Shield of Faith if you think it gonna mostly martial fight.
Guidance and resistance cantrip can be handy since you still will be low on spell slots so you don't have to concentrate anyway. Light would be usefull in the dark.
Cleric would be the way to go imo. And probably one of the easier ones to do a backstory for. Something happened that made you start believing in _______.
I think the cleric multiclass is a good one but just for an alternative, I'm currently playing a shadow monk with two levels of warlock. You get a couple of spell slots to cast hex and an extra 1D6 every time you attack is pretty nice. Only need a short rest to get them back as well. At 2nd level you can get devils sight so you can see through the magical darkness you can create. Its excellent for hunting down ranged enemies. You'll need 13 charisma tho so you'll probably be dumping strength and intelligence
