So looking over monk class it seems you dont need to be unarmored to use your ki atks and unarmed strikes (only that free bonus action atk monk gives). SO am I correct in seeing you can go armored fighter 1st level and monk rest but armored and still punch hard with lots of smacking around and using ki?
You can use ki while armored but your marial arts is dependent on being unarmored therefore all your punches would be doing 1+str damage. You also would not benefit from unarmored movement. Overall they is a very serious nerf.
Im your DM allows the optional fighting styles you would be better off being a fighter with the unarmed fighting style, you wont get ki but you can do decent damge with your fists while wearing armor.

Armor negates the use of martial arts so you would be attacking with STR to hit and damage (1+STR as jegpeg said). I would have to look but if you were shadow monk you might be able to use you spells. And some other abilities like stunning strike only requires a melee weapon attack so should also work. But again you are attacking with STR.
as to going fighter with unarmed fighting style to could go that route but better hope you don’t run into anything that has resistance that needs magic weapon to overcome as your fists are not.
Edit: and a monk would most likely out damaging the fighter at low/mid levels as they can attack at d8 with quarterstaff or spear ( or d10 if they have proficiency with longsword or other versatile martial weapon), have extra attack like a fighter, and bonus action attack at martial arts die (or twice with FoB)
