'I was a doctor of philosophy, before I died'

Sarah nods. “Am I dead?” she asks earnestly. “Are we all dead?”

'That's a very interesting question, one I used to spend hours preoccupied with, when looking back on it, I was definitely still alive. Not like now'

“I wish I was smart enough to understand philosophy,” Sarah says wistfully.

'Oh, nobody understands philosophy. Philosophers are people who simply try to understand, yet in reality, the questions we deal with are, to an extent, impossible to truly understand. And being smart enough to understand is no thing to wish for. Ignorance is bliss.'

Sarah smiles. “Then I am truly blissful.” She seems much calmer now.

'Who were you, before you came here?'

Sarah frowns. “I’m not sure. I know I come from a world called Mystara and I lived on one of the islands, but I don’t remember much else, like about my past or how I got here.”

'You can't remember? Maybe you should see a doctor. If there are any around here. And like, an actual medical doctor, not a doctor of philosophy'

“Maybe I should,” Sarah muses. “The last thing I remember was swimming in the bright sunny sea, then a sudden storm caught me by surprise and I washed up here.”

'Maybe you did die? Maybe instead of an afterlife, there is life after life after life? Interesting...'

Sarah’s eyes widen. “Maybe. At least I can still breathe water. I checked.”

'You could breathe water? Fascinating!'

Sarah smiles at him. “I can! And I can swim really well too. I wonder if I’m part dolphin.”

'You could well be' Carter smiles

Sarah laughs. “You’re fun to talk to. At least I didn’t get stuck here with someone boring. Are you a ghost?”

'I don't know. At first, I thought I was in Hell, because, well, you know what I did. But I can't see why you'd end up in a place like that.'

Sarah nods. “I don’t know much, but I know I’m a pretty good person.” She reaches out to touch Carter’s sleeve. Is he solid?
