The statue's eyes turn green for a moment, before an audible sigh comes from it.

"Man, I thought I stumped you with that one. Well, here's your reward."

In front of the statue, a simple wooden chest seemingly materializes out of nowhere. Inside, there is an assortment of unusual items:

• Strigamia (1 person only): weapon, 3 melee/ranged damage, 10% chance of poisoning when attacking.
• Burrowcaller Staff (1 person only): item, summons a friendly silverfish once per layer.
• Mandible Cleaver (1 person only): weapon, 3 melee damage, inflicts armor crunch for 1 round when attacking.

Decide amongst yourselves who gets what. Remember, you can store excess items in the Handy Haversack.

“I call dibs on the Burrowcaller Staff. It’s an item, so I can carry it and still use my weapon, and it seems really useful. The weapons seem useful too, but they both do less damage than my sword and we need me to inflict as much melee damage as possible.”

"Smart idea. I'll take the mandible cleaver!"

Flavouring this like a scythe, for fun. It also has little icicles and flames scattered across it, because of my kit.

*people are free to join in at any time. You might not have the same treasures as people who've been playing longer, but you can hop in pretty much whenever.*

"Guess I'll have whatever this Strigamia is!" Phil takes that. 

The Strigamia, a strange whip-like weapon, goes to Phil, and the wooden chest disappears. Tendrils of smoggy shadow are billowing harmlessly but ominously from a pit in the back of the room... your first boss fight is ahead.

You can hear the heavy clanking footsteps of metal boots on the stone floor below, but you can't see anything down there... that is, unless you go in.

Phil tests out the his new and unique whip, smiling. 

"I am ready!" 

*alright, let's get this boss fight started... wait, what?*

On Layer 5, you see an... unusual sight. The corpse of an enormous silverfish lay in the back of the room, and a person is standing in front of it. The figure wears a full suit of plate armor, which looks battle-worn and aged, and a great horned helmet. They seem like they were about to sheathe their weapon, a grim-looking three-pronged spear, but they stop at the sounds of your party's approach. They turn around to address you, their face concealed by their helm.

"Aha! I had a feeling I would run into someone on these upper layers! I am Andalus, somewhat of a regular here in the Pit. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." They bow dramatically.

*Don't worry, you'll still get your boss fight.*

“Nice to meet you!” Dan says enthusiastically, happy to meet a fellow fighter. “I’m Dan Pierce, warrior and magic item trader when I’m not adventuring. Did you come down here in search of treasure, or do you have a higher purpose?”

"Neither, really. I've been down here a few times, and I've been trying to beat my record for the deepest I've gone. Never been past Layer 90, and I only managed to get there once!"

“Amazing!” Dan says in awe. “Being a trader, I’m after treasure, especially magical treasure. But I wouldn’t be averse to doing some good deeds down here too. I do hope this pit has a bottom though. Every dungeon should have a goal. At least in my opinion.”

"I'm more inclined to believe that a good dungeon is the goal, but I can understand wanting the adventure to have a definable end. Most people don't seek out places like this purely for entertainment. I've been told I'm a bit of an outlier in that regard."
