Andreas Saltspite

“Water, water, everywhere! But not a drop to drink!”

I try to remain professional in my recordings, but I must admit- this rattled me. Meeting a member of the Lighthouse court in person… you’d have to be there to fully understand it.

In this expedition, the first of possibly many in my attempts to catalogue the Lighthouse Court, I had been given a name- Andreas Saltspite-  and the place where he was supposedly last encountered. The guild had provided us with a ship and a crew in order to sail there- a spot of mostly empty ocean miles from land, only identifiable by the unnaturally dense fog and a pair of small, rocky outcroppings jutting from the sea. We had a plan to try and find him- but, luckily- or perhaps unluckily, he found us.

None dead, remarkably, but two injured. Our navigator and one of the sailors employed by the guild. Both experienced sudden, rapid desiccation and dehydration as they came into contact with the fog. Their identities remain private at their request, but they likely won’t be joining us soon. They wouldn’t want to, anyways.

Andreas Saltspite, ‘His Saline Majesty,’  did not show his full form to us, his silhouette much resembling that of a humanoid, wearing the costume of some sort of captain or admiral- it’s hard to tell, it was a bit blurry and the fog was thick. What was clearly visible were his eyes- shining a bright white, piercing through the fog. This is a trait many members of the court supposedly share. He appeared on our vessel, followed by a rapidly expanding cloud of fog. The wind stopped completely, and I could hear my own heartbeat.

Nobody said a word, and we watched as he produced some small object and offered it to us- not to one person in particular, but to the crew. Shrouded in fog, I couldn’t tell what it was, but one of us took it- right as someone- the same sailor I mentioned was injured- got scared out of his wits and tried to stab Saltspite. His form collapsed into the fog, which began to spread and flow over the ship, enveloping the poor sailor. Within a few seconds, as the fog retreated back from the ship, Andreas with it, I saw as the sailor and the unfortunate navigator beside him lie on the ground, gasping for breath, with dried, cracked skin and bleeding lips. They both needed water, desperately.

on the trip back, the winds did not favor us, but I finally got a look at what the Fey Lord had offered the crew: a ship inside a bottle. Specifically, the ship we were sailing on, exactly. The man who accepted the gift- also anonymous, at the moment… he hasn’t acted right in the two days since this expedition. I’ve caught him staring out to sea for no apparent reason, refusing to eat or drink, and he hasn’t talked much. Except about Andreas. His eyes.

next expedition is scheduled for next week, this time we will be sailing to an infamous shipwreck along the coast of an island not far from here- it was where one of the humans lost to the light was found. He was half mad and dying of dehydration. I hope to find more connections to the Lighthouse Court there.
