Living at a frontier of a dwarven kingdom is not that easy. Harsh cold mountain environment, aggressive wildlife and troublesome goblin neighbors are just a few things to care about.
After losing all of his friends and his left arm to the pack of wargs, the old dwarf tried to find a shelter in the old frozen forest. Here running through the woods and snow he stumbles on a tall green silhouette. Without farther thinking dwarf runs there. In the deepest of the woods, he finds a circle of trees and a lone treant partly hidden in snow. Hearing distinctive sounds of wargs nearby, dwarf decides to hide under it. The pain struck him in his leg. Wargs jaws squeeze around his intact limb. In a moment enemies surround him. He strucks with his axe, but strong warg's skull does not break after first hit. Suddenly the earth trembles. In the moment he closed his eyes all wargs were dead. Only the crushed bodies in the pools of blood remain.
"You lost too much blood. We will need you to survive if we want to live this not suitable place. A life for a life. Now sleep," said the treant towering the dwarf. It was a month from that time, but he still remembers clearly his waking in a snow. The frozen forest was missing. His wounds were miraculously healed and where his left arm was, the wooden one took it's place.
"South," a strong thought flashed in his mind. "So be it,"thinked dwarf, "South we go."
I was thinking of making a cute little companion with spherical fur body and small arms and legs, but in the process I altered it. A goblinoids which were experimented on with Enlarge/Reduce spell for lasting effect by the group of crazy mages. After a bunch of failure experiments, their bodies became smaller and their limbs became larger permanently. To hide their altered look, which reminded mages of their humiliating failure, they were forced to wear a spherical fur coats and masks. Now fluffballs serve as guards at the experimental base. While they still have some resemblance with goblins, their nature changed to more kind one. For stats you can use buffed up goblins (str, int and cha) with more massive size. I would also give them some no damage cantrips and lvl 1-2 spells, to increase their challenge rating.
Meet Akali, a recent work I painted. It was really hard to paint fur like it is on fire but I hope it worked out in the end. Overall this painting gave me some pain in the ass, but result was worth it.
Backstory: Akali grew up on the streets of port Himichi. She used to live a happy child's life until she was enslaved by her father's creditors.
As a result Akali was sent to mine sulfur on the volcanic island of Maghat. Hard work and unpleasant conditions there made her ill. A cough and a migraine were usual guests from now on.
After years of living on the island, she found some people that were unaffected by the illness. She started following them trying to find out how they achieve that. After a few investigations Akali figured out that they were some kind of occultists that prey to fire spirits. Years of observation gave her knowledge of fire control. She becomes a fire itself.
Her new ability helped her to discover unknown tunnels inside the volcano that could help to escape. At first look all the tunnels were leading to nowhere, but after a few months of wandering in the labyrinth of tunnels, she comes across a room with a lava waterfall and a cave behind it. After going through the deepest part of the cave, Akali, at last, found out the escape path. At long last, she has her freedom back.
I know that the story has some holes, and I am new to writing but it will give you hints about this character.
I wanted to add some more NPC like characters to our miniature collection. So I decided to start with wandering merchant.
He is a distinct character with a bright big smile and even bigger purse. Everything tells a viewer about his considerable wealth, leaving a bit of mystery behind his traveling. Probably it is his wondering soul, which still calls for an adventure. All these golden items and plump belly makes him an easy target for all kind of ill-natured creatures. But looks can be deceptive. Training as monk for almost half of his life and wizards apprenticeship for another half can prove them wrong. Making a bait of himself gave him a continuous source of trading goods. His precious bags are full of weapons, armors, potions, magical ingredients and artifacts, but do not make yourself fooled by his appearance or you would share the fate of many. Smile and you will receive a discount, smirk with evil thought and your items will replenish his collection.
Azzaru was a special demon. Even though he belonged to the slaves of obyriths, his conceit knew no bounds. Disobeying, starting fights and revolving was his pride and joy. For that Azzaru was constantly punished by his masters, so he was always in the process of regrowing his limbs. Life in Abyss was not easy for a tanar'ri like him.
After the slave revolt Azzaru was looking for a new way to stand up above other demons. Revolutions open new possibilities. The place of the previous masters would not be vacant forever, so he chooses to become a demon lord himself.
Fighting constantly with others he built himself a small army by beating them into submission. With his superior dexterity and four swords masteries, Azzaru was having one win after another. With each victory his ego grew too. Before long he tried to challenge one of the demon lords.
His first defeat was grotesque. Never has he imagined his swords would not penetrate his enemy. After a blow his swords broke like a piece of glass. His hands were trembling and his head shaking. The blow, he received at the end, shattered his bones. Flying into the dirt, he coughed some blood.
Only now Azzaru understanded the foolishness of his conceit. The skills that he polished from his birth was not enough to win this opponent. Fear and despair filled his mind. Not able to stand up properly, Azzaru sat on the ground. A wicked smile on his face demonstrated his readiness to die. His opponent made a swing and stopped it barely touching Azzaru's head. He was placed into submission. From now on he is the demon lord's servant, one among many.
Having one more doctor to fight this 2020 plague is a good thing, even if he is a painted one.
New yeti miniature for your winter adventures. P.S. If someone is interested I was using gorillas photos as reference for fur rendering :)
