I'm starting a campaign as a first time player and am really interested in playing a drow paladin.
My idea for his back story would be that he was he was smuggled from the under dark when he was a baby and raised in a temple not knowing he was a drow. He believes he is a high elf that was abandoned at the temple doors. He has devoted his life to a God (not sure which one yet or if a God at all) and seeks to vanish darkness from the world but through all of this he still feels his drow nature telling him to do evil things even though he doesn't know what it is.
Would this type of character work? Would it be too much for a first time playe and I should just pick something else?
There is nothing in the Drow nature that would be "telling him to do evil things" but on the other hand there is nothing that says that Paladins can't be evil. But considering that he was kidnapped from his family the temple responsible is probably evil, so that works out.
The main issue of course is why he'd be the only high elf with dark skin and a sensitivity to light.
Why was he smuggled from the underdark? Does he want to return ? Does he want to find out who his real family is? Does he KNOW that he is from underdark, and what does he do WHEN/IF he finds out ?

It can surly work if your DM is okay with it and you are interested in such backstory!

Could work, but consider this:
Why was he smuggled from the underdark?
Does he want to return ?
Does he want to find out who his real family is?
Does he KNOW that he is from underdark, and what does he do WHEN/IF he finds out ?
