New player here, rolled for stats. i picked the class before doing the rolls. dude has 17 on INT. the other stats seem decent, but is there anything I can do with that stat? I'm the only martial chara/healer in the party it seems.
since I'll be joining midway he starts at lv 3. is there any options I can take to help him (and the party) stay alive?
What are your other stats? Can you switch them around?
Unfortunately, there's not much a high int does for you, mechanically. It will give you a good bonus to a few skills, and good int saves (which rarely come up), but not much else unless you go wizard or artificer. Its why a lot, lot of characters use it as a dump stat.
From a role-playing perspective, it seems like it would be pretty fun to be the genius who just likes to hit things with a sword.
Can you switch them around, though? I’d love to see that 17 in str, 15 in con and 11 in int.
BIggest thing is, if you are a new player, stay away from multiclassing. It’s a good way to make a bad character. Case in point, Wizard/paladin doesn’t really give you a lot of synergies. If only because at a core level, paladins want to be in melee, while wizards want to be in the back. There’s bladesingers, but they don’t work with pallys at all. Actual, 2 levels in war wizard could be cool, or abjuration. But it will, of course, set back your paladin progression and delay your auras coming on. And the warcaster feat would be a requirement if you ever plan to cast any spells. Do you know how high a level the campaign will go?
Have you looked at just straight bladesinger? You can still be up in melee then, just no healing.
Or just be an unusually smart paladin, which probably is the best bet. Like I said, it could be really fun to role play, even if it doesn’t do much for you mechanically. And multiclassing can be really weak if done poorly.
Why did you put 17 in Intelligence to begin with? The rules says to roll and place the results as you please. There is literally nothing preventing you from putting the 17 anywhere else.
someone taught me to do it and the stats were locked since I had a session
Have you played the, I’m new and got bad advice card? Lots of DMs would be sympathetic and realize it’s pretty weird to put a 17 in int on a pally.
And if you can’t, it’s really no big deal. Your stats are quite solid, being unusually smart isn’t going to hurt you by any stretch. It won’t be as useful as if the 17 was in another stat, but it’s not like it’s bad, it will just be quirky.

But why did you listen to them if you picked the class before you rolled your stats? What lineage are you and where did you put your ability bonuses?
But yeah, as Xalthu said, I'd ask the DM if you could switch since you were given awful advice. If the DM says you can only switch two stats around, switch it with CON and you can start building from there.

I'm not sure if the DM allows artificers, nor have I looked into the class. I'm contemplating multiclassing as a wizard tho.
his current stats are
STR 15 DEX 12 CON 11 INT 17 WIS 12 CHA 16

alright thanks. dont think DM lets me switch the stats, I'll read up on all that stuff for maybe future campaigns and shit.
