Im about to run a campaign with the bbeg being a homebrew Mindflayer-like megamind trying to conquer the overworld using Underdark monsters. These Plans havent come very far yet though. I am planning on introducing them to some underdark monsters in the beginning: There are a few Changelings and Grimlocks sent by the bbeg overseeing the creation of a deep rift into the underdark. Im not sure wether the rift is created by magic or in some other way but i want to show my players that its something bad they shouldnt mess with just yet and maybe just try to close. I thought that my wizard would catch some weird vibes about the rift. We also have a paladin of tyr in the party and his alignment is lawful good. Would he feel that there is some major evil behind this?
If they activate the ability then a Paladin's Divine Sense can detect the presence of desecrated (unholy/evil) ground nearby, and I would say a rift might count even if it's not strictly "ground".
While I believe it's only intended to be flavour text at the beginning of the ability, I personally like to interpret the note about sensing "strong evil" and "powerful good" as being a passive ability that can be triggered by the DM when it makes narrative sense, i.e- the Paladin simply senses that there is evil nearby if it's strong enough, not shielded in some way etc. (and the DM just wants them to).
Definitely within their wheelhouse narratively, I'd say the same is true of Clerics and anyone else with strong ties to a good deity.
