Just wanted to see what others thought of this back story, it may be a bit too over-the-top...you tell me...
Viktor Mannheim, was once a level 18 Paladin and Champion in The Order of Radiant Heart. A small force was dispatched from The Order to deal with an ancient evil reported to have been summoned forth from the depths of Hell. The Order arrives and faces a Arch-Devil of immense power. All but Viktor is slain in the fight, but as he lands the killing blow the Devil possesses him. The Devil-possessed Paladin returns to his castle and immediately sacrifices his wife and 3 children to Asmosdeus. The devil fiendishly allowed a small part of Viktor's conscience to witness the sacrifice of his family. Word spreads of the death and mayhem that ensues as the Devil begins his reign of terror. Another force is sent out to dispatch the fallen Paladin of Torm.
Viktor, is finally defeated after a long bloody battle. However, Viktor, is not killed. He suffers a grievous blow to the head putting him into a coma. He is returned to The Order of the Radiant Heart where he is chained by powerful magics. Many of the most powerful priests and paladins of the realm are summoned to aid in the exorcism. After several exhausting days the Devil is successfully excorized. Now, The Order is left with the question "What do we do with the fallen Paladin, now?" When Viktor awakens he has complete and total amnesia due to the horrible head wound sufered during the battle. He doesn't even remember his own name. The Order, decides to give him a new name and retrain him in the ways of their Order, in hopes that he may one day atone for the vile deeds committed while under the influence of the Arch Devil.
Vladimir (Viktor), is now a level 1 Paladin, again. Interestingly enough, this could lead to all sorts of role-play possibilities. Such as, he might be recognized by someone and that someone has lost a loved one or an entire village to the possessed, Blackguard of Asmodeus. I've greatly shortened the story, Viktor spent a year or so as a Blackguard and with the aid his Hellish armies plundered the land around his castle.
It could be epic - but, importantly make sure your DM, or you if your DM your happy with brain damage stealing away levels - that crud is a thing of previous editions where undead level drained your sweet character into a husk. Also you have the heal problem. Can regenerate restore the brain damage, can heal or restoration spells? Even if they cant a wish that his memories are returned would mean what? a level jump? If you cover those issues properly first then go for it.
Depending on the game you may suffer from aging penalties and die of old age before the end of a campaign due to your previous life - thats something to consider as well.
Thanks for the feedback. You certainly have some valid points. I should've added that the DM is a friend and we've been playing together since the beginning of 3.0. 2 decades give or take.
I will probably keep his Intel at 8 and roleplay him as a "deep thinker". His age is currently 38 or so.
