Calling all adventurers! There have been strange rumors in the town of Oakhurst about an old ruined citadel that has since collapsed into the ground. Across the Sword Coast there have been growing rumors. Recently a group of adventurers attempted to delve into the ruin but nothing has been heard from them for over a month. Now you and your fellow adventurers are hearing the calling to explore the fortress and discover it's secrets. Why you do it differs between each of you from glory, to treasure, to uncovering secrets.
Hello everyone, I am looking to get four players together for an adventure of the Sunless Citadel, the first part of Tales of the Yawning Portal. It starts at level 1 and goes to level 3.
About me: I have been playing dnd for over a decade and have spent the last half of that dming. I am currently running Waterdeep Dragon Heist on here and am working on improving my pbp dming. I post 1-3 times a day.
Please include the following in your post:
Name:
Race/Class:
Background:
Backstory:
Personality:
Fun fact about you:
D&D experience: (You don't need any, I just like having a variety of experience)
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff:
For character creation, 4d6 reroll 1s once for stats, you can reroll if you have less than 70 total or use point buy. Tasha's racial and class options are all okay, if you want custom lineage, I just want you to give a reason why you are using it over a normal race. UA content is generally okay as long as you check in with me, I just like warning when it comes to that.
Feel free to pm any questions you might have
I am planning on keeping this open until I have enough applications to select an interesting group so get them in fast.
Below are some adventure hooks if you are having trouble deciding why you have come to Oakhurst to delve into the Citadel
Going for Glory
You are eager to make a name for yourself. The legend of the Sunless Citadel is well known locally, and stories indicate it is a place that holds promise for those intent on discovery, glory, and treasure!
Rescue Mission
Another party of adventurers, locally based, delved into the Sunless Citadel a month past. They were never seen again. Two human members of that ill-fated party were brother and sister, Talgen Hucrele (a fighter) and Sharwyn Hucrele (a wizard). They were part of an important merchant family based in the nearby village of Oakhurst. Kerowyn Hucrele, the matriarch of the family, offers salvage rights to you and your team if you can find and return with the two lost members of her family—or at least return the gold signet rings worn by the missing brother and sister. She also offers a reward of 125 gp per signet ring, per character. If the characters bring back the Hucreles in good shape (of good mind and body), she offers to double the reward.
Solving a Mystery
The goblin tribe infesting the nearby ruins, called the Sunless Citadel, though no one knows why) sells a single piece of magical fruit to the highest bidder in Oakhurst once every midsummer. They’ve been doing this for the last twelve years. Usually, the fruit sells for around 50 gp, which is all the townsfolk can bring themselves to pay a goblin. The fruit, apparently an apple of perfect hue, heals those who suffer from any disease or other ailment. They sometimes plant the seeds at the center of each fruit, hoping to engender an enchanted apple tree. When the seeds germinate in their proper season, they produce a twiggy mass of twisted sapling stems. Not too long after the saplings reach 2 feet in height, they are stolen—every time. The townsfolk assume the goblins send out thieves to ensure their monopoly of enchanted fruit. You are interested in piercing the mystery associated with how wretched goblins could ever possess such a wonder, and how they steal every sprouting sapling grown from the enchanted fruit’s seed. Moreover, you wish to find this rumored tree of healing, hoping to heal an ailing friend or relative.
Rumors of Dragons
There are rumors that this citadel was in ages past, the home of a cult to dragons

Sounds fun, here is my character.
Name: Kiori Thunulekati
Race/Class: Goliath, paladin (oath of vengeance)
Background: outlander
Backstory: Kiori was born in the tall mountains up north. He learned to survive from the land and provide for his tribe. But making a name for himself was hard. His people's legends spoke of dragons and how they killed even the most skilled warriors among then. Desperate to prove himself and angry that so many of his people died at dragons claws and fire he departed, searching for a dragon to fight.
Personality: Kiori thinks before speaking, translating mentally into Giant and back before replying. This makes him seem slow of intelligence in common.
Fun fact about you: I brew my own mead at home.
D&D experience: a couple years with 5e, playing in adventures league and dming for friends.
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: I would prefer an OOC message thread here, but can use discord too.
Backstory: Growing up as an orphan in Silverymoon, Selene Moonshade early found her place within the halls of political power, using her natural charms to influence the decisions of it´s rulers. Her only connection to her past was a green crystal, the shape of an oak leaf. As the years passed her curiosity over this trinket had increased. Only recently she had begun having vivid dreams of lush forests she never had visited and a melodious voice teaching her fey magic. Her newfound powers made her restless and one evening she convinced her benefactor to send her on a quest to solve the mystery of The Sunless citadel.
Personality: Selene would seem somewhat aloof at first, being used to the court of Silverymoon, but she is good hearted and will always care for the forests, the little people and anything connected to her fey heritage. Even when in anger she would never lose her calm. It will take some time for her to adjust from life in the courts to the dungeons of The Sunless citadel.
Fun fact about you: Had coffee with the King of Sweden
D&D experience: Played all the editions of AD&D exept the 4:th but new to PbP
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: Don´t mind it.
Backstory: Raz always had a flair for the music. He loved to dance, sing, play for everyone. Eventually, people got tired of him, since he kept on singing, always. He decided he would take on the world, and an adventuring life, to spread his music and happiness.
Personality: Mostly happy. Enthusiastic, though is capable of doing what is needed. Loves music. Especially his own. He thinks it it very beautiful
Fun fact about you: I like cats. A lot.
D&D experience: A bit more than a year of dnd, no PbP experience though.
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: Meh, i would be fine with it.

Interesting, placeholder here, will update later today.
Ability scores: 111013131814
Name: Gruenic
Race/Class: Half Orc Cleric, Twilight Domain
Background: Acolyte
Backstory: Gruenic came from a small village near Icewind Dale, smaller than Ten Towns. He did not know his parents, he grew up in an orphanage and migrated from town to town, looking for work. He always loved the night and while others slept he would wander outside to stare at the stars, listen to the sounds of the night.
One evening on a star lit night with a bright moon he was wandering and looking at the sky, got momentarily turned around. It was a frightening feeling, being lost and alone, he searched over the horizon, looking for landmarks. He saw in a clearing under the full moon a creature, it appeared to be a half wolf, half man, very tall. It stared straight at him and through him, and then it walked away. Shaking and cold, scared by what he saw he had a fitful sleep that night. During that sleep the Goddess Selune appeared to him. She said to him in the dream "You are meant for something more, go and protect people in my name, remove the fear of the night, of darkness, of hidden monsters that lurk in the dark. Protect my people and I will reward you." He began on his path that next day.
Gruenic became obsessed with learning more about Selune, learning about what he was being directed to do. Finally one day, a wandering traveler, a priest, heard his questions and took him under his wing to teach him about Selune. He was given a shield by this traveler with an image of a moon emblazoned on the front. He set out in the world to make his way, give comfort to those in need, and those frightened of the beasts and terrors, lurking in the dark....
While travelling on the road to Oakhurst, Gruenic encounters Kerowyn Hucrele and she was asking him if he had seen her son and daughter, Talgen and Sharwyn. She stated that they were lost hunting for the Sunless Citadel, and a reward was offered for their return. Gruenic wanted to help her, to seek what is lost, in the depths of the dark, and return them to their mother intact. He makes his way to Oakhurst and begins his hunt.
Personality: Gruenic is used to moving in the dark, at night, alone. He knows that he must join others to achieve his goal. He is serious, thoughtful, but welcoming and open.
Fun fact about you: I play the cello, and now my son is taking lessons.
D&D experience: Played back in the 80s, 90s, then lost to it for a long time. Recently playing again, after Covid have been playing more PBP. Enjoy the pace.
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: Yes, or OOC chat
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I am very interested and would like to play a Rabbitfolk if that is OK with you.
Character name: Flùr Dorcha (Scots Gaelic for Dark Fluffy)
Race/Class: Rabbitfolk Artificer
Background: Criminal
Backstory: Flùr’s home was destroyed to clear a spot for a King’s palace, and he was forced to live in the city as a result. He was very adaptable, and accustomed to life on the streets immediately, until he tried to swipe from a member of a thieves guild, instead of getting mad, they took him in, where he learned that he had a thing for making machines of wonder. He used his ability to steal from corrupt royals and nobles, honing his craft as he did so. One of his guild members was part of the team that went down there, and Flùr is going to find them. Whatever it takes. Their name?
Ahnold! The Barbarian!
Personality: Very energetic, enthusiastic, and loves to prove others wrong. He also enjoys explaining what he does to those that aren’t as adept as he is.
Fun Fact: I love to explain magic with nonsense science sounding fluff.
DND experience: I haven’t played a lot, but I have DMed a bit. I have literally played three campaigns, one I played a VERY paranoid Ranger, one I never really got to play, and the third I played a gnome that got laid by two elves at once after he had blinded and killed the king’s champion giant spider and befriended an owlbear, so I am really excited to play some kind of serious campaign and would likely be cracking jokes and comedic relief.
As far as the Discord thing, I personally would prefer an OOC here, but am also easy-oasy.
Name: Raadox the Green Race/Class: High Elf Wizard (Bladesinger) Background: Criminal Appearance: Raadox is clothed in deep green forest garb, covered with woven leaf patterns. Yet he is clearly not a wood elf, rather a high elf. He is of average height and build for an elf, wearing no armour and carrying a pair of elven blades. Backstory: Raadox the Green grew up in the High Forest. A bit of a likeable rogue and scoundrel, he won a valuable amulet in a game of dice (okay, so perhaps the dice weren't entirely clean, but no one noticed, so it never happened, right?). Unfortunately, as is his way, he bragged about his winnings to the wrong people, only to be robbed at sword point by a fur-clad giant barbarian from the northlands. With nothing left to his name but a few coins and his travelling gear, Raadox set out on the trail of the barbarian. It led him here to the town of Oakhurst. By all accounts, the hulking, seven-foot-tall barbarian he's chasing - a giant of a man who calls himself Ahnold - entered a nearby ruin a few months ago and was not heard of since... (we can easily change Ahnold the Barbarian into some other suitable NPC at your whim DM of course). Personality: Flighty and a bit haughty - a likeable rogue for the most part.
Fun fact about you: I'm a black belt in Shotokan karate and have published two novels. D&D experience: Over forty years pen and paper, about 2 years PbP on here. Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: Yes, please.
Hi! I am new to dnd but would love to join if its not a problem. :)
Name: Ruby Cherrycheeks
Race/Class: Lightfoot Halfling Druid
Background: Acolyte
Backstory: Ruby was only a little girl when their little halfling village was attacked. The only thing she remembers from that day is the fire that kept spreading. She remembers running away towards the forrest with her family and then nothing. When an old druid found her in the forest she was all alone. He decided to take care of the child and raise her in a temple from which he was a priest. When she was old enough Ruby decided to travel the world in search of her family.
Personality: Kind, she would help anyone in need. But she´s careful around stragers and finds it hard to trust them.
Fun fact about you: Funnily enough I also love cats very much.
D&D experience: No experience, I watched a few dnd campaigns o youtube and decided to try it myself.
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: I would rather have it here but I could probably use discord too.

Ability scores: 161113161314
Name: Grarash
Race/Class: Half-Orc/Artificer
Background: Criminal (Burglar)
Backstory: Grarash never knew his parents. He just knows they were two half-orc drifters that wandered into a human settlement, his mother gave birth days later, and they were gone within the week, leaving their child behind. Grarash was born fairly small so it was assumed by the humans that his parents left him behind thinking he was fairly weak. Growing up in the settlement of tribal humans, he was loved and was treated as one of the tribe. When he got older he set off to make his fortune, but soon found himself homeless on the streets of Waterdeep. His occupation as a petty cook not doing much for him, he had to resort to being a burglar and stealing from nobles of the North Ward.
There was a point where he was arrested by the law for attempting to extort a noble for coin, but was found guilty and forced to work in a labor camp for two years.
After this event, he turned to simply adventuring and burglarizing all throughout the land. Half of his gains are sent to the human tribe that raised him. Along his travels he picked up some useful skills that has helped him in his exploits.
Personality: Grarash seems very disconnected from the world. He is fairly calculated and intelligent, always very cautious which comes with the territory of his occupation. He isn't evil, he just has no strong personal views and just wishes to survive and get the job done.
Fun fact about you: I believe I was in your Waterdeep PbP before but dropped out. XD Hello again! It just occurred to me.
D&D experience: (You don't need any, I just like having a variety of experience): Over 1 Year
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: Yes

Those stats......
I was so caught up tryna figure out where the Artificer stuff came in but ZAMN! Those STATS!
Yeah, I rolled super good. I even PM'd the DM to see if I rolled right.
I also changed my fun fact cause I realized I was in the DM's prior Waterdeep PbP, as a half-orc, but dropped out due to prior commitments. LOL At the least Sunless Citadel is shorter and it'll be a nice little adventure. :) Maybe more will come to it. Also, the artificer stuff comes with Grarash honing his skills.

Fun fact about you: Funnily enough I also love cats very much.
D&D experience: No experience, I watched a few dnd campaigns o youtube and decided to try it myself.
Should we have a campaign discord to discuss out of character stuff: I would rather have it here but I could probably use discord too.

I like you
I like big powerful cats like panthers. But not lions. They’re lazy jack***** that for some reason embody bravery?
Farewell.

Farewell.
I think I might need to change my character application ;)
No seriously, my stats are good but his are INSANE! Should I be something else?
Farewell.
Up to you, I will mention I am generally okay with multiple of the same class in my parties as long as they aren't copies of each other
Dude I just read you have the same class and background.
When I make characters it's all RNG so it's just a crazy coincidence it ended up like this.
If it's cool with you, if we're both in the party, our two characters can be partners, Grarash could have met him in the woods :)
I am totally cool with that, what subclass would you be taking?
Farewell.
I rolled a 1d4 and got Alchemist. Though given my half-orcs strength can potentially be 20, battle-smith or armorer sounds like the way to go
Btw, is anyone able to content share?
