I have been running an Out of the Abyss (OotA) campaign here in the Play by Post (PbP) forums for 2 years now. The story is nearing the halfway mark. One of my four players has decided it best to leave the campaign due to his real life situation and a loss of interest in PbP, which was affecting his posting frequency.
I have been keeping this group light at 4 players, to keep the pace of posting as brisk as possible. However, 3 characters is not enough to face some of the more challenging encounters. The remaining player characters consist of:
Level 5 Ranger
Level 5 Wizard
Soon to be level 5 Barbarian
And the party is losing a level 5 Cleric.
I am looking for a replacement character to join us. The character you bring and their backstory will have to fit in the current scenario, which will be explained in the spoiler below. If you do not know the OotA story, there may be slight spoilers, but I am keeping them minimal for this posting.
The party has made their way to the Deep Gnome settlement of Blingdenstone in their search for an escape from the Underdark, back to the surface world. Your character should be a race that would reasonably be found in the Underdark, and of a race and alignment that would be granted entry into Blingdenstone. As to why you find yourself in Blindenstone will be part of your backstory.
Alternatively, you can make a Deep Gnome character and they 'why' of you being there will be a non-issue. If you do choose this option, you may choose to give your character lycanthropy (wererat).
I have experimented with some homebrew mechanics while running this campaign, and have discarded those that weren't being adopted or weren't working. The only one that remains is how I grant DM Inspiration:
On character creation, you will choose Bonds, Traits, Ideals and Flaws.
When acting as your character, if you act in a way that aligns with those Bonds, Traits, Ideals and Flaws, then you can request a DM Inspiration.
You have to cycle through each individual Bond, Trait, Ideal and Flaw before you can request DM Inspiration for the same Bond, Trait, Ideal or Flaw again.
I also do not allow the same character class twice in the party. That means Ranger, Wizard and Barbarian are not available classes.
My campaign shares all of my content (Legendary Bundle), so you can choose to make your character after being accepted into the campaign.
I am looking for active members of the community that post frequently. I will be choosing based on forum activity with equal weight as character concept or the quality of the replies in this thread. I will also give more weight to applications from people who make an effort and not just reply with 'I want to join' posts.
Bonus points if you can write English half decently (but your character can speak mangled English common/undercommon if that is what you want to roleplay)
For reference:
(I try to keep OOC separate from roleplay thread) - OOC Thread
A deep gnome arcana cleric, haunted one background. (Wererat) He delved too deep into secrets better left undisturbed. Struggling with his identity in more ways than one, he is certainly open to joining a party of adventures..
<not wedded to this backstory, cleric domain or background- Would love to “fit” with the campaign or the city.
I’m interested, looks awesome. Made a deep gnome cleric. Longtime player, yet new to play by post.
here’s “Grop” just used point buy. Let me know if you want to roll.
I'm trying to get back into PbP after a long hiatus when all my games fell apart pretty much at the same time last year. When I was playing I posted many times per day. One of those campaigns was an OotA campaign that was on their way to Blingdenstone, so this feels like a great fit. I love the cleric class, so I'd be thrilled to roll one of those up and jump right in!
Schnardrutt was born in the Mithral hall enclave of Svirfnebli led by Belwar Dissengulp during the years of the great exodus. While still a youngster he became a helper and later an apprentice to the famous Professor Maekkelferce, a Lantanna rock gnome expatriate residing in an advanced laboratory in the Undercity. Schnardrutt was socially awkward and always cared more for facts than for people, but within the laboratory he found a true home. Years passed and his brethren decided it was time to reclaim Blingdenstone from their hated drow enemies. Schnardrutt Ironmoulder, now an accomplished artificer, created several siege weapons designed to expunge the drow still defending Blingdenstone. After the retaking he was given the title of senior master engineer with the defense forces of Blingdenstone spending his years inventing new contraptions to solidify the defenses of the city. Recently he has retired from his duties and has planned to spend his remaining years in his own laboratory, his only contact with the outside world being the daily visit to the Foaming mug tavern remembering his youth in Mithrall hall and sometimes even considering one final journey before joining his ancestors. But fate had other plans for him and his inventions.
I'm not a fan of mixing Eberron and Faerun content. My only requirements when I launched this campaign was no creatures that can fly or swim. I will not disqualify anyone for their choice of class, except for the 3 that are already being played. But if you're going to play an Eberron class like the Artificer or an Eberron race like the Warforged, then I would ask that it be a significant part of your backstory.
Edit: Seems I don't know much about the Lore of Faerun. Artificers are a thing, not just in Eberron.
Oh, sorry, I´m fairly familliar with the deep gnomes but new to the artificer class, didn´t know it was an Eberron class. I have just thought of it as an "inventor class". It would definitely be explained in the backstory. I realize it´s not a good start to an application, but I think I will have a go at it anyway.
I think it perfectly reasonable that an applicant commit to posting within 24 hours of the start of their turn during combat (excluding weekends), and posting once per weekday to contribute to the advancement of the story (out of combat). The latter is not strictly enforced... sometimes there is nothing for your character to say. But you shouldn't let that become the norm.
Of course, RL happens too. All we ask is you let us know if you're away on vacation or unable to be active for a period of time.

I may be showing my ignorance of the lore here but all I know is Artificers were play tested as Eberron content.
But it seems their lore has been incorporated into Faerun too...?
In the Forgotten Realms, the island of Lantan is home to many artificers
I'm thinking of maybe playing a drow elf druid (circle of land, underdark). He always had a close connection to Nature, and never really fit in with his people. He believes in the dark maiden, rather than the spiders queen and believes in a world where everyone lives in harmony. That is why he flet from Menzoberranzan to Blindenstone, where he has luckily been accepted to live for the time being.
Seems, drow is not really an option; so skip the previous.
How about a half-elf drow (a Crinti with pale skin) female follower of Eilistraee. Born in Dambrath, always worshipped Eilistraee and eventually joined the Darksong Knights, taking an oath of vengeance (So she is a Paladin) against those that oppose a harmonic world. She went into the underddark hunting a Yochlol and after defeating it she is now in Blingdenstone for a rest and to figure out where to go next.
Another idea, if drow half-elf also isnt really an option:
A svirfnebli light domain cleric, will have to follow up on this with what God, and rest of backstory, but would be living in Blingdenstone.
Final option would be a Glasya tiefling druid of underdark, who was enslaved in Menzoberranzan, and could escape due to knowing invisibility. took refuge in Blingdenstone.
Regarding playing I can normally post multiple times a day, am playing in a couple op Pbp, and 1 RL campaign

I'm one of the players in the campaign. That must be one hell of a backstory then :)
As things are - it's highly probably we'll kill you ourselves :)
I was thinking of playing a dwarf Paladin. I am a very active participant in PbP on this site, but one of the campaigns I was in ended, and I would love to join a new one. I should be able to meet and exceed the "once a weekday" minimum.
My campaign shares all of my content (Legendary Bundle), so you can choose to make your character after being accepted into the campaign.
I would like to wait to create my character after being accepted (If I make it :P)
I'm still thinking on a backstory, do you prefer super long ones or short, bullet-point ones?
Also, Point Buy or rolled?

I'm interested in giving a pbp campaign a try. I've been doing online or in person d&d since 2nd edition. If it fits, I'd like to join with a Dwarven forge cleric of moradin.

Artificers were introduced in Eberron in an earlier edition. They were officially published for 5e in Rising from the Last War, the Eberron sourcebook. Tasha's Cauldron republished them in a more setting-agnostic fashion.
They don't traditionally fit with the Forgotten Realms because a lot of people like to play the Realms as pulp fantasy, old-school swords and sorcery whereas the default artificer is a more magitech character. Like you pointed out, Lantan makes a convenient place for one to come from though, and WotC has always changed the setting and lore to make room for new content. Dragonborn as a player race didn't even exist in the Realms originally, for instance.

Another medical problem. Indefinite hiatus. Sorry, all.
As one of the players in the campaign I want to add that merchants have so far been extremely rare. It's a feature of the Underdark and especially of this module. It means restocking any type of consumable resource is very difficult. Obviously being able to see in darkness is also very helpful.
I would advise choosing a character that functions well within those parameters.

The rest of the party built their characters via Point Buy. Character creation can wait until whoever I pick joins the campaign. There are bonds and traits unique to OotA that you may want to pick, so please don't rush on fully creating the character.
Again, I don't want to reveal any spoilers for the module, but any kind of Drow (and even Duergar) would be a hard sell as a player character and would definitely not be welcome in Blingdenstone.
I'd be very interested in joining. I've play 5e for about 5 years, entirely via PbP (here and reddit). I've had a couple of long term campaigns, many more fizzled early. It would be great to join a group that is well established in a long-term campaign.
As for a basic character concept, I'm thinking of a Deep Gnome Celestial Warlock. They would be a bit of an outcast in svirfneblin society with their patron drawing them towards the light. As this is a well-establish campaign, I think that additional backstory could/should be built into the world you have already built. I thoroughly enjoy weaving a backstory into an established narrative (I've found using the Heroic Chronicle to discover backstory has been particularly rewarding for the Wildmount Campaigns I've participated in).

I see that the original expectation was once per weekday. Does that still hold true?

Hi, I like the setting and I'd like to join.
Long time player, pretty active both here and on Discord.
I'd like also to join because it is quite difficult to find a campaign not starting at level 1.
