Hey everyone! My name is Charlie. I am an experienced dungeon master but I've never run nor played in a pbp campaign before. I've run almost every 5e module except for Princes of the Apocalypse. I was hoping to run it on here pbp-style!
What to Expect
This will be a lore-centric, character/story driven campaign set in the Forgotten Realms setting, near Waterdeep. I'm a DM who emphasizes roleplay, story-arc development, long term consequences, and interpersonal relationships between characters (pc's and npc's alike). My DM'ing style is roughly 40% roleplay, 35% exploration, 25% combat, but this is a dungeon-heavy module so that may not be totally accurate. I will be showing you maps and other visual aids when necessary, however I expect this to be 99% theatre of the mind, including the combat. I always consider myself to be on the party's team as the dungeon master, working with them to build an epic story. I'm not the type to kill off PC's or to unfairly stack the odds against you. PC death is a possibility, but I prefer it to be part of the story, and only if you as a player are okay with your character dying. We can always work in a new character, or find a way to fit your character's near-death into the story.
We will play a little mini-arc from level 1 - 3 at which point the plot hook for PotA will be introduced.
I can usually post multiple times a day, with a higher frequency in the evenings (est time zone).
What I Expect from You
I'm for looking for four or five level 1 characters from the Waterdeep area who are a bit down on their luck, and willing to take shady job. I'm generally looking for characters of a neutral or good alignment who are interested in teamwork and cooperative play (although I don't discourage a little drama, especially if it drives character development). Treat other players with courtesy and take an active interest in participating with the story, and I will be a happy DM!
Backdrop
You have been hired by a man named Jerub the Gray. This job wasn't your first choice. It wasn't even your third choice, but you're desperately in need of work. Jerub is an unsettling man; a shifty priest of Kelemvor, with a shaved head, dark circles under his eyes, and black tendrils of a large tattoo peaking out of the collar of his tunic. Clerics of Kelemvor, often called "Keepers of the Dead", are usually strange folk, but "strange" doesn't even begin to describe the manic idiosyncrasies and awkward mannerisms of this man. When you first met him, Jerub told you that he was hiring adventurers to retrieve an religious artifact for him. He gave you a small purse filled with 25 gold dragons and promised you 25 more, provided you meet him in a week, at the Bowels of the Earth tavern in the Southern Ward of Waterdeep. There he will introduce you to the rest of your party and fill you in on the finer details of your quest. Despite Jerub's off-putting manner, you took the job.
Character Creation
We will be using the character creator on D&D Beyond. I will send you a link to join the campaign before we start. I have all of the needed content unlocked from the marketplace.
Races: PHB races and Genasi Class Options: PHB Only Backgrounds: SCAG and PHB Spells: PHB, XGtE, and Princes of the Apocalypse
Direct message me with a character concept and basic backstory if you are interested in joining! I'm really looking forward to this campaign. Thanks in advance for your interest!
//I'm going to impose a limit of a 19 being the highest possible ability score for level 1 characters after racial bonuses, if everyone is okay with that?
My fiancé might be joining us as a rogue or ranger. I'll see if she is interested tonight when we are both off of work. If not we may have one other player joining. I think a party of 5 is best, because I will be throwing some tough combat encounters your way.
I'm really excited about this! I think we have a really good group. Everyone has a great character concept, good grammar, and clean formatting. This should be really fun! I'm a bit busy for the rest of the afternoon, but I will make the initial campaign post tonight, and we can start from there!
I'm looking forward to it. Can we have leeway with our backstory? I'm thinking of what I want to write for it. Was going to use Xanders to do some random rolls for his life.

For the most part I'm open to all backstories. Nothing too grandiose. My only real stipulations for character creation are posted above. Just a character who is down on their luck to the point of a taking a job that is less than desirable. Someone who can play well with others (for the most part).
The Bowels of the Earth tavern is a bustling pub in The Southern ward of Waterdeep, shadowed by the city's towering outer walls. The Southern Ward is considered the "poor" ward and is often known as Caravan City, due to the large numbers of caravan merchants, teamsters, and guards that swell the population of the ward most of the year.
The thick fog rolling in from the Sea of Swords and the smog from the Trade Ward to the North keeps this modest little borough cloaked in gray, even on the sunniest of Waterdeep days. The winter is giving way to the rainy season, and the freezing drizzle that has refused to relent all week seems to increase the fishy smell of refuse and discarded food scraps that welcomes you as you enter the South Ward.
The Bowels, despite the scarred and filthy faces peering out from the shadows that seem to gather in every corner, is a welcome refuge from the weather as you step past the drunken doorman and take in the din of the common area. You spy a small, dimly lit hearth with an old dog sleeping at it's base to your left, and a long bar to your right, tended by a well dressed older human with a gray handlebar mustache and greased hair-do. The common area opens up past the fireplace into a dining room of sorts, lined with booths and dining tables, each with a hooded candle-lamp at the center. You see no sign of Jerub as you survey the room, and you notice that many of the tables are filled with what might be adventurers, based on their inhospitable glances and clattering scabbards. You're not quite sure if any of these brooding groups of would-be heroes and villains is your party, or if they have yet to arrive.
[DM]: Give us a brief description of your character and their personality, and a small montage of your character arriving at the Bowels of the Earth (When did you arrive/what have you been doing since you arrived). You arrive separately and have yet to meet each other. The barmen, an older human named Alandell, is expecting you. He will give you further instructions on meeting with Jerub as soon as you introduce yourself to him. So maybe end your introduction there?
[OOC]: We added a fifth and final party member. Bran the Gnome Wizard!
