I am a new GM looking to start a regular online gaming group of 4 players who love Critical Role/Matt Mercer's world and 5e DnD. I think it's important for players to know Mercer's world but it's not a deal-breaker if you don't. The campaign will be essentially vignettes tied together to form a greater overarching story. Your PC will level up with the pace of the game or time jump turning downtime to learn a new skill or possibly study/train to multi-class. I am asking for role players, not just dice rollers. I would like to learn how to be a great GM and grow stronger with my understanding of rules. As a player, you can be a seasoned player or recently introduced to the game! You just need to be considerate to my bumbling as a new GM.

The party will begin in Whitestone 60 years after Vox Machina and 40 years after Mighty Nien. At an inn along the Alabaster Trail called the Silver Linings your PCs will meet having traveled a great distance or decided to leave a dull life in Whitestone to go adventuring! Your PCs will be recruited for a series of tasks to level up to third before the 'real' adventure begins. Let's say episode 1 is essentially a test to see how well you can role play as well as to see if the party can stick together PC/player chemistry! So, no big campaign reveal until I have chosen the players!

I'm Ink! I've been doing text-based rp for about 20 years now, so role play-heavy games are pretty much my favorite. I think I'll apply with my Tabaxi Paladin, Six Clever Bees.
PC Name: Six Clever Bees (Six)
Race: Tabaxi
Class: Paladin
Standard Array stats.
Biggest ambition for your PC - Given that his background is a Grinner, I'd say his biggest ambition is to stop the corruption running through the Clovis Concord along Wildemount's coast. He grew up with his clan in the poorer parts of Port Damali and has seen so many people fall through the cracks or used as scapegoats and victims for the corrupt that his main goal is to find some way to put a stop to it. He does understand on some levels that it's an idealist's notion, but one should have a dream.
Favorite Exandrian - If we're talking character-wise, Essek Thelyss. He's morally complicated and compelling as a character, and also frankly, Dunamancy is cool.
Brief backstory within the world of Exandria Tal'dorei or Wildemount -
Six grew up in the coastal city of Port Damali, in Wildemount. He lived with his clan - raised by his aunt with his twin brother, Bold Chains, and his cousin, Thunder in the Mountains (Thunder). He was a precocious child, always getting into trouble with Thunder while his brother usually had his nose in a book. He began to have dreams from Avandra around his teenage years, which he felt were calling him to her service. He was happy to answer them. As he got older and his dreams of Avandra increased, Six fell in with the Golden Grin by way of one Sir Linus Denwallop, a wandering minstrel who stopped by to astound the children of the clan and took an interest in Six; though by no means a bard, he was a fair hand at the Lyre and, with Sir Linus’s encouragement, he found himself ensnared by their ideals – that every individual has the power to change the world. It spoke to the same parts in him that Avandra called to, sparking inspiration and a certain willingness to fight both corruption and tyranny. Coming from the common people on the Coast, Six could think of no better cause than championing them.
His entanglement with the Grin and Avandra eventually drew him across the sea to Tal'dorei, after an incident with his twin brother left him unwelcome among the clan.
Montagar is from the Cliffkeep Mountains initially, but moved to Whitestone some years ago out of a desire to pursue a life outside the bounds of his Wood Elf family. In looking for work, he found his previous training and natural skill at arms afforded him a place in the Pale Guard. Although he was treated politely, his roots did make him something of an outsider in the largely human community of Whitestone. Montagar’s ambitions have shifted to a desire to join the Whitestone Riflemen. There’s a lot to prove to get that far, and Montagar isn’t fitting in well with his unit. He’s going off on his own too often. He doesn’t have necessary people skills for being a guard dealing with the public. That said, he’s the best shot in his squad, and smarter than most of the NCO’s or even some of the brass in the Pale Guard. He just needs a way to show his skills make him worth it.
I’d like to see Montagar experience success and failure simultaneously in those first couple levels. Enough for him to earn the trust with knowledge of black powder, and also leave the guard. Whether as a “disavowed” interest of Whitestone or a personal interest, I’d like to sort out with you since you know more about the campaign’s direction.
For the long run: I figure he’s running from home, essentially. He’s an elf who doesn’t want to go home and face a people he doesn’t feel accepted by or attached to. He’s “young” by elf standards and thinks that the elves are due for a change, but can’t bring it about himself. He avoids them to avoid thinking about his impotence in changing them. He’s throwing himself into other endeavors, especially anything that will help him gain notoriety as a sort of rebellion and middle finger to the people back home who didn’t agree with him. It’s a complex relationship of love/hate that control his future plans without actually having a lot of committed direction.
Favorite character: Senokir, that freakin’ weirdo gave me such a good creepy vibe.
Biggest ambition for your PC - She grew up on wild tales of the royal family of Whitestone and strange stories her grandfther would tell as she stared at his ruined hand by the fire. She wants to learn the truth behind the tales....to record her own tales and one day regale her own grandchildren with them. She is fiercely devoted to keeping Whitestone and by extension Tal'dorei and Exandria safe......and she wouldn't mind surviving to tell everyone her place in doing so.
Brief backstory within the world of Exandria Tal'dorei or Wildemount -
Lilian grew up in Whitestone and served in the Pale Guard as her mother and grandfather did before her. She spent her childhood playing under the Suntree, enjoying the Harvest Festival and feeding honeycakes to a certain bear that roamed the city. Though her service in the Pale Guard was exemplary she soon found it to be not as exiting as her grandfathers tales had made it out to be....though to be fair there were a lot less vampires and dragons around these days....
She soon found herself signing on as a caravan escort in order to try and inject a little more adventure into her young life and it expanded her horizons somewhat, even travelling as far as Emon on one occasion.
Sounds like a great opportunity! Always interested in exploring Exandria further.
Name: Amihan
Race: Air Genasi
Class: Monk
Ability Scores: Standard Array 8 16 15 10 14 12
Ambition: to gain knowledge of the world and rise in the ranks of the Cobalt Soul, hoping to one day lead a major expedition to uncover lost secrets of civilizations before the calamity.
Favorite Exandrian: Kaylie - just found the dynamic of discovering her father interesting.
Backstory:
Orphaned at a young age, she does not know her parents or the mysterious circumstances surrounding her lineage. Air Genasi are rare and looked at with suspicion across most of Wildemount. Taken in by the sages and monks of the Cobalt Soul, she studied at Zadash and Rexxentrum sharpening both her mind and her body. She is full of quiet confidence in both her knowledge and her martial skills. She has recently struck out on her own in her first big test for the order, secretly gathering information and knowledge across Exandria. By researching and locating areas where ancient knowledge could be hidden, she is hoping to impress her superiors in the order and gain increased responsibilities. Her first mission takes her across the sea to Tal’Dorei, where she seeks to unlock the secrets of that continent.
Greatest Ambition: He wants to use his new powers to free his clan from the dragon that has been ruling over them.
Favorite Exandrian: Player character wise it is Percival De'Rollo and NPC wise it would have to currently be Lucien due to how great of a BBEG he was.
Backstory: Mikmek was born into a clan that were in service to a young red dragon that was very cruel to them. They were treated more like food for it when angered and if not for the high rate at which Kobolds reproduce his clan would have been wiped out in only one or two generations. Surprisingly Mikmek had the luck and intelligence to live to maturity.
One day while being made to move the treasure hoarde about under the watch of the dragon, Mikmek came into contact with a strange weapon that seemed to change when he touched it, turning into something he could easily wield. Later on he began to hear a voice that called to him. Upon following it he found the weapon once more and was given an offer of power in exchange for a favor. The favor was not explained but desperate for power he took the deal and watched as the weapon shot out a tendril of energy that filled him with sudden knowledge of magic and a way to escape the cave where his clan was held captive.
Upon escaping with his weapon in tow he arrived out in the mountains that surrounded Whitestone, his new patron telling him how to get to town and what it wanted him to do. "Grow in power and prove you are worthy to continue serving me!"
Backstory: Akanos grew up the son of a tavern keeper in the town of Regalo. His father, Darnas, was abusive to him and treated him horribly. He never knew his mother. His father said she died but gossip around the town suggest that she left him after Akanos was born. One night, when he was sixteen, his father was drunk and got angry at Akanos for spilling some mead. Darnas pulled a dagger and slashed Akanos across the cheek. Akanos fought back and grabbed a bottle and knocked out his father. Realizing he can’t live this life anymore, Akanos quickly packed his bags and ran away. He decided that he would accomplish two things, 1. Find his mother and 2. Become a renowned Spellcaster. Akanos had always been a studious child, excelling in history and languages. Two years after he ran away, he found work as an researcher for the Banhaven Academy, a renowned magic Univeristy. While excavating an ancient ruin, Akanos found a Ruby ring located on a pedestal. He rubbed the ring, trying to remove dirt and summoned Mephistopheles, the Archdevil of Magic. Mephistopheles offered Kane a deal. In exchange for his servitude, Kane would receive magical power beyond imagination. Kane thought about the life he had lived. With magical powers, he could actually help people. And no one would bully him again. So he agreed on the condition that he would perform no evil acts. This intrigued Mephistopheles, who agreed to the terms. As their first matter of business, Mephistopheles orders him to travel to the Silver Linings Inn. The relationship between Kane and Mephistopheles can be tense. Mephistopheles desire for souls stresses Kane’s desire to help people. He decides to kill only evil people for Mephistopheles, but that still doesn’t mean there isn’t conflict.
Ambitions for Kane: I would like to see Kane mature and grow. At this time, he’s only about 18, he is very new to the world of adventuring. I would also like for him to learn discipline and know that his actions have consequences.
Corrin's father raised her in Whitestone. Corrin had to grow up faster than most to look after herself while her father worked. She would clean their squalid homestead and cook dinner for when he got home. He worked for hours in the Alabaster mines, saving up every penny he had to see his only daughter become educated. After many years, her father obtained for her a position as a scribe in the library in the Temple of the Dawn Father. Corrin would attend the morning rituals and then set herself at her tiny desk to transcribe religious texts that had become weak with age. At one of these sittings, one of the priests had a special task for her. She was to create a copy of a book detailing the nature of magic users and the various schools of magic. The book contained a few simple spells from the various schools, and immediately Corrin was enthralled. In secret, she made an additional copy for herself. She had found a new passion for magic and yearned for more. Knowing that she would not be able to achieve this goal within the constraints of her status in Whitestone, she decided to set out on her own to build some hands-on experience and find a place that would accept her as an apprentice. She left a note for her father, and set off into the wider world.
Ambitions: To find a great wizard to apprentice under or a school of magic that would accept her. She has a thirst for knowledge, and would do anything to get more. I'm hoping over the course of the campaign that she would learn that some knowledge doesn't come from books, and that learned experience is just as valuable.
Race: Human (Variant) Class: Bard Standard array Favorite Exandrian: Kaylie Shorthalt Brief backstory: Part of a group of traveling musicians, Liva is a fairly well traveled bard; Known for her soft voice and energy when performing with her Viol. Born and raised on the Menagerie coast in Wildemount, Liva left her home in pursuit of her own story; Wanting future generations of Bards to sing of her as she sings of the great bards of the past. It's by sheer chance that the group she was traveling with winds up In Whitestone, Originally they were set to carry on towards Emon where the Musicians would perform for nearly a week. Alas one of the performers became suddenly ill so they were given no choice but to find lodging in Whitestone. Performing every night as a means to cover the price of their room, the Musicians became fairly well known within Whitestone in the weeks since their arrival.
Ambitions: Liva is young and naive, she is still under the impression the world is black and white. I would like to see her views change, for her to experience what the world has to offer her while carving her own story. She often sings only of triumph and victory, she needs to learn that loss and defeat are on the other side of the coin.
Biggest ambition for your PC: I think the biggest thing for Hazel right now is figuring out her place in the world. She never really had much choice in her life, and now that she's on her own, she has a lot of exploring to do, both of the land around her and of her own desires and motivations.
Favorite Exandrian: Artagan/The Traveler
Backstory: Hazel grew up in a small orphanage in Nicodranas. She always felt like a bit of an outcast due to her changeling nature, and never quite understood what she was. She tried to run away several times with no real plan in mind, finally succeeding when she was ten by sneaking onto a ship just as it was leaving port. She hid in the hull for a few days before being discovered, and quickly realized to her dismay that she had managed to board a ship of Revelry pirates. By some stroke of luck, they took pity on her, and let her stay on with the crew. As it turns out, she was quite useful to have when they were in port - guards took much more kindly to the requests and lies of an innocent little girl than a grizzled old sailor.
Over the years she stuck with that crew, acting as their liaison on the docks and using her shapeshifting abilities to her advantage. She grew familiar with Darktow and its denizens, and learned how to properly defend herself. But, as she grew older, she started to question if this was really how she wanted to live the rest of her life. So when the ship next docked in Tal'Dorei, she bid her crew farewell and headed towards Whitestone in hopes she would find some sort of sign of who she was meant to be. She knew she would always have a home with the Revelry if she chose to return, but for now she was excited to try something new.
I think I should point out from my perspective that starting as a level one your PC would be relatively young and not at all well known. I'm big on renown based merit and all PC will level ups based on contribution/role play. There's no milestones leveling here, earn levels as your PC overall contributes.
I have no content sharing FYI.
Posts will be regular intervals with occasional breaks from GM for IRL shenanigans that do happen.
Gimmek grew up in the Guiatao clan in the Crispvale thicket. Many of the other members of his clan were hunted down by the Iron Shepherds. Gimmek fled the area and sought to stay away from everyone, nervous about who he could trust and he preferred the outdoors, the company of nature as opposed to other humanoids. He travels a long distance, over many many miles and finally makes it to Whitestone in his travels. He comes into town seeking supplies, feeling exhausted and considering joining up with a band of adventurers, but he is cautious and slow to trust others.
Biggest ambition for my PC : To grow in his powers, to be convinced that other people can be good, that evil, division and power are not they only ways of the world. He views other people as curiosities, wishes to learn from them and observe them.
Favorite Exandrian / moment : Jester and the cupcake, classic!
Biggest Ambition: Noirbirs wish more than any other is to forge the greatest weapons and armor in the history of Exandria!
Favorite Exandrian: I’m at a complete tie between Grog and Scanlan! Both characters provided so much joy to watch! Grog simple but hilariously innocent….when not Raging and Scanlan a vibrant perverted kind father! It’s really hard to chose!
Background: Noirbir Falbek was born in the years following the aftermath of one of Vasselheim greatest battles. His father and older sister would tell the tells of legendary hero’s wielding magnificent objects of power protecting the city and all of Exandria. Noirbir’s father claimed he even had an adventuring experience with those same heroes though Noirbir always had a hard time believing that. Still the many grave markers and memorabilia of the battle forged the desire to create objects of both power and protection in the hopes that should danger as great as the past ever arise more will survive the onslaught. Noirbir turned to Moradin the All-Father in the hope that through him Moradins will to Forge, Protect, and Endure would spread far and wide.
Backstory: Born in dark tow, Ricster was raised among the pirates. Despite being raised there, he despite the pirate lifestyle However, due to his parents, he had no choice but following them. When he was 25, his parent were framed by one of the revelry of something that they did not commit. His parents were executed, and he was able to flee from the island and got to Port Damali. However, he knows the place is not safe. Therefore, he continues to roam from place to place to avoid being caught. Eventually, he get off the continent and travel to Tal'dorei.
Ambition : To restore his people through service to the Raven Queen.
Favorite Exandrian : Caduceus. Talisen’s portrayal was amazing and I loved his take on the class.
Backstory is a bit of a work in progress but Knell is just of age and decided to follow the Raven Queen. And is pilgrimaging to her champion’s (Vax) temple in Whitestone.
This looks great! I am a pretty experienced DnD player and I have been doing PbP for a little over a year now, so I know my way around. I spent three hours building a blind gunslinger, but I had a better idea just as I was finishing. Hope you like it :)
Name - Tristan
Race - Half Elf (Using Tasha's variant rules if possible)
Stats - 8, 14, 14, 15, 10, 10
Class - Bloodhunter (Planning on profane soul)
Ambition - Though his physical body had been left seemingly unharmed on it's exterior, the parasitic virus that is the corruption is slowly killing him from the inside. Tristan is desperately searching for a cure.
Favourite Exandrian - Jester Lavorre 100%. Such a unique character concept and top notch roleplay to boot, however Essek is a close second.
Backstory - Tristan was born in the year 530 PD in the city of Molaesmyr. His mother was a guard of the elven Queen, his father was the architect who designed the royal palace. As his mother worked much of the day, he was primarily raised by his father, who worked from home. When Tristan turned ten, there was an attempt on the Queen's life. The attempt did not get far, however Tristan's mother was injured in the chaos, struck in the leg with a cudgel that shattered her bones into hundreds of pieces. As she was no longer able to serve in the guard, Tristan's mother took a position in the academy where the guards were trained. Once Tristan came of age, he enrolled into the academy. He was put in his mother's class, and it was quickly apparent that he was a great student. His fighting skills were pretty average, however he was a brilliant tactician. He progressed much faster than the other students and graduated far earlier. However, on the day that he was to take his first position, the corruption came. It swept through the city like the buildings were made of nothing but air and found its way into every corner of every street and house. His father was visiting a dwarven city to learn from a master architect, but Tristan and his mother were quickly outrun by the corruption....
Nearly four hundred years later, Tristan woke up. He felt like he had been sleeping hours, but the cobwebs and dust that had settles over him indicated otherwise. He was lying at the foot of a tree near the edge of the Veluthil forest. In somewhat of a daze, he wandered around until he came to a pond. Looking down at his reflection, he noticed that his body was changed. His hair, once a dark brown was now silver that faded into purple at the tip. His old military garments were in good shape, and he still had the sword at his side. His skin had become paler and purple markings adorned his forearms, spiraling lines written in runes of a forgotten tongue. Startled, he ran from the forest, however as soon as he stepped outside he collapsed. His chest burned like someone had shoved a hot iron down his throat. He coughed, and felt wet blood splatter onto his palm. After a wile the pain lessened, and he could walk again. He traveled for a long time until he reached civilization. Every so often, his lungs would seize up and he would enter a coughing fit like the first outside the forest, however they were gradually getting worse. It was clear that he needed to find a cure before it was too late...
If I am chosen, perhaps we could discuss in DMs about some of the things that Tristan doesn't know :) Either way, I hope the campaign turns out great!
Biggest Ambition: Love wants to make a name for herself; she wants to be one of the stories of adventurers that she always grew up hearing. She knows she sticks out, alright? She's a tiefling from a human family, after all. Might as well make her own path and create her own story.
Favorite Exandrian: Lady Kima. Followed closely by the Gentleman.
Brief Backstory: Coming from a small town in the Tal'Dorei Republic, Love has been working at the local tavern since she could walk. Her parents owned it, after all. And she was still there, many years later, working as a barmaid. She didn't mind it so much; she loves meeting new people. Her favorite part has always been the stories the newcomers would tell, and she'd spend her entire shifts teasing more and more out of them. But now she wants to write some stories of her own. So with her parents' blessing, she hitched a ride with the next caravan out of town and headed along for the ride. Now she's in Whitestone, looking for work. And where better to start than with the local tavern? At least it's familiar.
Biggest Ambition: Creed is a member of the Cobalt Soul and a follower of Ioun. He has recently come into possession of a book of ancient knowledge that has something to do with the disappearance of his parents. He longs to understand it and why they are gone.
Favorite Exandrian: Caduceus Clay
Backstory: As far as Malakai could remember, he was a Pippin and his life started at the Whisperthin Pippin Orphanage. He was always a troublesome child, too curious for his own good. He drove the other children a bit crazy with his need to know everything. Malakai was the kind of kid whose hands were always raised in class, the kind of student who would finish a thick book before the end of that day so he could read a new one during the night. It was that thirst for knowledge that led Theobolt Pippin to seek out the help of the Cobalt Soul to quench the gifted kid's passion for learning. When Malakai was old enough, he was taken by Expositor Yalitza Vega, the Kalashtar who became his mentor and master. Expositor Vega was the foremost expert expositor in the field of ecoterrorism and agricultural sabotage. After his years of training in Zadash he came upon a book that when he read gave him powerful memories of people he could only feel where his parents. Packing his things he absconded one night with the book in hand, searching for answers.

Name: Mikmek
Race: Kobold
Class: Warlock (Hexblade)
Stat: Point Buy
Name: Akanos “Kane” Novak
Race: Male Tielfing
Class: Warlock, Fiend Patron

Name: Corrin Nackle
Race: Forest Gnome
Class: Wizard
Point Buy
Favourite Exandrian: Caleb Widogast
Brief Backstory:
Name: Liva Seril
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Bard
Standard array
Favorite Exandrian: Kaylie Shorthalt
Brief backstory: Part of a group of traveling musicians, Liva is a fairly well traveled bard; Known for her soft voice and energy when performing with her Viol.
Malenia - [Monk - Way of the Jedi] - Auryn: Princess of Destiny
PC Name: Hazel
Race: Changeling
Class: Rogue
Standard Array stats

PC name : Gimmek
Class : Druid
Stats : Point buy
Race : Firbolg
Backstory :

PC Name: Noirbir Falbek
Race: Dwarf(Hill)
Class: Cleric(Forge Domain)

Race : Kenku
Class : Cleric - Death Domain (Raven Queen)
If I am chosen, perhaps we could discuss in DMs about some of the things that Tristan doesn't know :)
Either way, I hope the campaign turns out great!

Name: Love Mernavro
Race: Tiefling
Class: Bard
Name: Malakai "Creed" Pippin
Race: Tiefling
Class: Cleric (Arcana)
