I am a DM, for mostly play by post games, for a little over a year. I am looking to try and DM a long-term Curse of Strahd Campaign. If you are interested, please post below with your character applications.
All levels of experience welcome, but am looking for players who havent played CoS, or at least haven't gotten very far into it. This game is a Transylvania-esque type of campaign and will dip into various kinds of horror. If you do not believe you'll be able to handle this, please, politely show yourself the door.
What I expect from you: I am looking for a minimum of 1 to 2 posts a day, with exceptions on Saturdays and Sundays as I usually take those days off.

Backstory:
Introduction into the campaign;
To a party of seasoned adventurers such as yourselves, what you see is but another dull tavern in another dull town in some nameless province. It is but another span of time between the challenges of true adventuring.
Outside the tavern, a fog lies over the town this evening. The damp, cobbled pavement glistens as the lights of street lanterns dance across the slick stones. The fog chills the bones and shivers the soul of anyone outside.
Yet inside these tavern walls the food is hearty, and the ale is warm and frothy. A fire blazes in the hearth, and the tavern is alive with the tumbling voices of country folk.
Suddenly, the tavern door swings open, and a hush falls over the room...
Backstory: Alexander spent most of his youth in the city of Baldur’s Gate, with his mother and sister Larazia. He never knew his father, his mother once told him that his father left shortly after he had been born and never returned. While they were poor and didn’t live in the best conditions, but did the best they could with what they had, which wasn’t much despite this Alexander was content with his life. However, that soon changed when he returned home one day to find his sister distraught, and his mother laying on the floor unconscious. After a few moment’s Cassandra calmed down enough to tell him what had happened, their mother had been ill for some time and had been trying to hide it, and getting the needed medicine would take gold they didn’t have. However, they were able to find a “benefactor” who was willing to help, so long as they repaid him. With little choice Alexander and his sister agreed, after getting the needed treatment their mother recovered. However there was still the matter of the debt that had to be paid, while his sister did whatever work she could find to help, Alexander himself did whatever he could the get the family out of debt.

He taught her the ways of the Ranger, training her in the bow, the blade, and the spell. As a girl, Lia showed a tremendous amount of potential and was quite adept in all the skills. When she came of age, she went out into the world offering her services as a protector to those who would pay for them.

Name: Janek Whitmor
Race: Human (variant)
Class: Fighter
Level: 1
Stats: Ability scores: 151211141412
Background: Haunted One
Backstory: Much of Janek's family was involved with an evil cult. Though not knowingly involved, he ended up getting caught up in what they were doing and was imprisoned. After more than a year, he was able to escape his confinement. Traveling far from his previous home, he now just wants to put his past behind him.
Much of Janek's family was involved with an evil cult. Though he does not fully know their aims or ultimate goals. On the cult's behalf, his parents had traveled to the Shadowfell and that was where he was born. His father disappeared to an unknown fate there, while his mother returned with him to the Material Plane. There he lived in a small village with his mother, her parents, and his older brother and sister. A couple of years later, after the birth of a younger sister, his mother left. Rumors were that she had gone mad.
From that point his grandparents were his guardians. His home with them was modest, but comfortable. Their small village was rather isolated. Others in town did not know of the family's involvement in the evil cult, yet they were still known to be rather odd. For the most part, people avoided them. As result, as Janek grew up, the other children were often not very friendly. Or if they were friendly, their parents would soon steer them away due to concerns about the strange family.
While still rather young, the village became embroiled in a regional military conflict. An usurper, also part of the cult, was trying to wrest control of the area. At one point when loyalist troops were in the village, the cult summoned demons to destroy them. And destroy they did - the loyalist troops, the citizens of the village, and nearly all the buildings of the town. In the turmoil, Janek ended up possessed by one of the fiends. He became part of the mayhem that devastated the town. And he was in the heart of the town as it was being consumed by fire. He has no clear memory of how he got out. It seems impossible that he too would not have been burned alive. But he got out unscathed - even while many others he was with that day perished. His brother attributed it to a blessing from his evil god, though Janek wasn't sure.
It was then that Janek learned his older brother was a part of an evil cult. And his grandparents were both leaders - the grandmother a Warlock and the grandfather a leader of their fighters. All were dedicated to an evil gold the cult worshipped that sought only destruction and chaos.
In the days to come, Janek's older sister pieced together much of her grandparents' involvement in the cult. The family had come to a loyalist encampment that had formed just outside a larger town nearby. This had become their home after the destruction of their village. The sister was going to report the grandparents, but did not realize her older brother was also involved. The brother was able to reawaken the fiend within Janek and sent him to intercept the older sister before she could tell anyone. Janek ended up murdering his older sister.
As it turns out however, it was already too late. The girl had sent a note with information about the cult to the Lord in charge of the encampment. The grandparents were rounded up along with a few other cult leaders. Both Janek and his younger sister were caught up in the arrests as well. The grandparents were tried and executed. The younger sister ended up succumbing to wounds she had suffered during the arrest. Janek was tried and found guilty of having killed his older sister. However, as he was not a leader, he was given mercy and not executed. He was sentenced to a very long term in prison.
After over a year, his older brother - who had managed to flee the encampment - managed to arrange to have Janek snuck out of the prison. Not wanting to go back and have anything to do with the cult, Janek slipped away from his rescuers and went off on his own. During the year in prison he struggled against he fiend that had possessed him. And for now at least, he felt like he had control of himself. Though his memories were foggy, he still is haunted by the memories of his older sister's death. And he feels partly responsible for his younger sister's death as well.
Traveling far from his previous home, Janek now just wants to put his past behind him.
ADDED NOTE FOR DM: I would be interested in playing that there is still an incorporeal demon within Janek. I am thinking this would take the form of the Dark Gift, Symbiotic Nature (from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft). The type would fit "An intrusive thought that inhabits your mind". It's just fine with the character as-is though without the specific mechanics and this is just background.
Name: Grégoire de Fronsac Race: Human (variant) Class: Warlock (hexblade) Ability scores:161616121013 Background: Investigator Backstory: Born to a wealthy merchant in Arabel, Grégoire could have chosen a quiet life in the city, but chose a different path. When he came of age he joined his uncle Rudolph in Suzail, assisting him in his investigations, quelling sinister eldritch threats to Cormyr. Recently these investigations lead them to the desolate and ruined city of Tilverton where young Grégoire came upon a sentient jet black blade of netherese origin, shadows flitting about it. An eerie voice spoke out in Grégoires mind luring him into a pact, serving Grégoire in his hunt for evil horror whilst sated with the blood of these creatures. Now his uncle Rudolph has retired but Grégoire still travels Faerûn in search of mysteries to solve and horrors to defeat.
I see there is another Cleric already so if two is too many, I also have a Paladin concept too.
Name: Vorser
Race: Fallen Aasimar
Class: Paladin
Level: 1
Stats: Rolled, rerolling 1s once: 15161411109
Background: Haunted One
Backstory: Born under a dark prophecy within his religious order lead to him being touched by the divine and born an Aasimar to human parents youngest of 4. Being seen as different from all other family/order members lead to Vorser being shunned and isolated from other members including his family. Divine visions started to manifest through his isolation, showing him great corruption and evil within the upper ranks of the order. He took the visions as divine guidance sent from Helm, and set about removing the corruption, believing this would redeem his worth to his family and order. Once the task was complete and the upper ranks of the order lay dead by his hand, the source of the visions revealed itself to be the works of the followers of Cyric, God of Lies, intent on destroying his sacred Order.
Plagued with the memories of his actions, he wanders the realm looking for any trace of the cult that deceived him and take his vengeance.
I have visions of this one eventually redeeming himself and being "reborn" if possible as a Protector.
Seeing a lot of good applications. I will leave this recruit open for a couple days so that anyone that wants to apply can. I am looking for 5 players, and if you have multiple character concepts you want to submit. Please do so all in one post (if possible).
Backstory: For as long Belmarm can remember, he has served the Raven Queen loyally as a scout upon the material plane, testing and seeking out interesting souls that might be of interest to her. Wanting for little more, and fearing only failure and secrets, he has service has been unwavering. His fervor only grew when a moment of emotional weakness led to the falling of one his targets, and yet he'd been forgiven.
Yet, when lent a more direct power for the reaping, a chill of worry began to creep into Belmarm's mind. Assassins were not unheard of serving his queen, but... why him? Why merely an eye upon the material plane was given such boon? Was this a long delayed retribution, or something else altogether? Fearful for the first genuine time in over two hundred years, a far more wary Belmarm returned to the prime material, now a bit desperate to seek out souls of interest or potential, and... nurture them into something greater.

Name: Ignatia Fallow
Race: (Official sources only.) Human
Class: (Official sources only.) Warlock ( The Fiend)
Level: 1
Stats: Rolled, rerolling 1s once.
Background: (Official) Haunted One.
Backstory: As a young woman Ignatia sought knowledge, anywhere and everywhere she could. After years of frustration a handsome stranger offered to teach her many things and give her all the knowledge of the world..........most of that was true.....though there were a few details omitted. They became lovers.....he became her mentor....her patron.....and then he abandoned her though not without leaving gifts to remember him by. Ignatia pursues knowledge still.......though her heart is unsure whether it is to punish him for leaving.....or to try and win him back......
She earns a living as a researcher, translator and scribe......though she has not had a commision for some time and funds are almost gone....
Backstory: Corxif Horcusporcus, merchant, alchemist and procurer of magical goodies from across the land. Corfix is an elder gnome, well elderly to humans at least. His training in alchemy and desire for knowledge brought him to seek powers of his own in order to amplify his business and better understand the goods he sells. So after nearly a decade of living and working in his burrow's alchemy shop he moved onward to new and exciting horizons! He spent years studying at a wizards college, ruffling feathers of his teachers for keeping loaned library texts "by accident" in spite of his obvious intellect. Corxif is a man always looking for the next magical fad, the next item to make a large sum from while feeding his hunger and hoarding texts as a hobby. He has no attachment to any specific guild, rather he collaborates with all who are willing! After all, there's always a chance for mutually beneficial business relationships. Networking is key to him.
Backstory: As a young man Bryt the spark of magic that emerged seemed to radiate from his soul. A happy, cheerful child, he continued that way as these powers grew and took great pleasure in helping those in need. The destructive powers that manifested as well frightened Bryt, and he grew too afraid of hurting someone on accident, so he ventured into the woods to meditate and learn to control his gifts. After many years Bryt felt under control and in touch with the power that resided within himself. He rejoined society and set about helping those in need. Eventually coming to travel with other adventurers and helping those in need wherever they might go.
Backstory: Born to a minor noble house, Elric received a thorough education by the best tutors and sages his family could afford. His father, the Lord Vanderisle, believed that knowledge and understanding of the world was of primary importance to the acquisition of power. He intended to groom his son for rule and ambition. Unfortunately for the Lord, education had a decidedly different effect on Elric. Instead of thirsting for power, as his father had intended of him, Elric found he was moved by the suffering of the common people throughout the ages. At first he kept his opinions and his studies to himself, but as he got older Elric began to share his perspectives on the world. He and his father frequently clashed. As Elric came of age, the conflict worsened. The orchards of the estate had experienced several difficult seasons in a row and the family's coffers had begun to run low. One after another of Lord Vanderisle's business ventures turned sour. The older man became moody and prone to violent fits of rage. He began spending most of his evenings in the drink. During one such evening he confronted Elric, raving and cursing. The argument came to blows. Elric's mother attempted to break the two men apart and Lord Vanderisle shoved her violently to the side. Her cry cut off suddenly. Elric turned to see a pool of deep red spreading from his mother's head. He stayed long enough for the funeral, but by then he had already made his decision. For years, Elric had been studying in secret with the clergy of Illmater. He took up the holy vestements, pushed his sorrow and anger deep within him, and tried to bury it by turning towards the suffering of others. He's drifted since then, never staying long in any one place or with any one group. Each time the old wounds within begin to resurface Elric moves on again, throwing himself at the needs of others. His newest stop is small dull town he doesn't recall the name of, but the feel in the air calls to him. There's pain here that can smother his own.
Background: Hermit - I needed to commune with nature, far from civilization.
Backstory: Iovara was raised by her single, human mother far from civilization. In the wilds, she learned how to survive on her own and grew to love nature and its creatures deeply. When she was only 11 years old, her mother died. She never knew her father, though knew he must be a celestial being. Her mother never spoke of him. From a young age, Iovara has learned to be completely independent and rely only on herself. Now twenty years old, still very young, she is experiencing a great wanderlust and urge to see the outside world, to see more of the society her mother had shunned for so long. Deep inside herself, Iovara has felt the desire to do good in the world, to help others, to leave her mark in some way. Though terribly inexperienced with people of any type and race, Iovara has finally emerged into the world, ready to leave her mark.
Backstory: Arth was born to two loving parents in a nomadic tribe. At young age, priests from a nearby temple came to visit the tribe. The priests worshipped the god of birth and renewal, Lathander. The priests believed that a former hero of the temple had been reborn and were looking for the young child who was their hero reincarnated. In order to prove that a child was their hero reborn, the priests had a series of tests that each child would undergo. In exchange, the priests offered the nomadic tribe food, water and other resources if they could tests the children of the tribe.
Arth went through the tests, and passed all of them. The priests came to believe that Arth was their hero reincarnated. They believed that at long last, they had found their saviour, and that the must take Arth to their temple for education and training. In exchange, the priests offered even greater reward to his parents and the tribe. Reluctantly, his parents accepted, and Arth was taken to the Southern Temple of Lathander. Their Arth grew up amongst other children, mostly children of the priests. He was taught how to perform the sacred rites of temple and to make offers of food to the Lathander.
At different stages of his life, after passing more trials and tests, Arth received tattoos to mark his position within the temple. He often travelled between temples to further his education, and held sacred ceremonies in major cities in front of shrines build in the name of Lathander. However, he would always returns to the Southern Temple, the place that he considered home.

Name: Elric Vanderisle
Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Level: 1
Stats: Ability scores: 13 18 15 12 8 15
