This is a short one shot, maybe longer, if everyone is enjoying themselves. Everyone in the party will be the goblin race from Volo's. I have a homebrew copy of the race that I can share after players have been picked for character creation. Players will start at level 3. All player must be at least one level of rogue. This game will take place in Waterdeep, a place where goblins are not welcome. Your group will be employed by a wizard to retrieve certain magical items throughout the city, al la heist movie. Some of these stolen magic items may be used during other heists. Looking for 4 or 5 players to play this PBP game.
Waterdeep, also known as the City of Splendors or the Crown in the North, is the most important and influential city in the North and perhaps in all Faerûn. Waterdeep was named for its outstanding natural deep-water harbor, and the city that grew up at this site became the commercial crossroads of the northern Realms. More than 100,000 people made their home in Waterdeep.
The City Watch was the local police force and in addition to capturing criminals, its members settled petty disputes, gave directions, summoned medical and priestly aid, generally performing duties that promoted the idea that Waterdeep was a city open to all who knew how to behave themselves. The city watch will take action when necessary. The more you steal, the harder the city guard will be on the lookout for the criminals (you all).
5e game! PbP game posting at least once a day. Casual game folks! We all have lives. I enjoy roleplay and I want this to be a roleplay heavy game, so feel free to roleplay with one another between my posts. I tend to like detailed posters. One-liners tend to hem up the game quite a bit. And please please please use proper English.
I’m Kyle, I'll be your illustrious and benevolent dungeon master during our adventure here. My only real experience is in D&D 5e. I am a newer DM here ready to bring others into the D&D universe. I will be running a heist-style game. I can post at least once a day for the most part, but they will be lengthy so there should be plenty to work off of.
If you’re new to this, don’t worry, I am as well. I want to keep the group small and manageable.
Players will start as a level 3 goblin with standard array or point buy. All players must be at least one level of rogue. You can multiclass or go full rogue. I am looking for a nice mix of players.
Ability Score Increase: Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age: Goblins reach adulthood at age 8 and live up to 60 years.
Alignment: Goblins are typically neutral evil, as they care only for their own needs. A few goblins might tend toward good or neutrality, but only rarely.
Size: Goblins are between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh between 40 and 80 pounds. Your size is Small.
Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fury of the Small: When you damage a creature with an attack or a spell and the creature's size is larger than yours, you can cause the attack or spell to deal extra damage to the creature. The extra damage equals your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Nimble Escape: You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns.
Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common and Goblin.
Apply by posting your character here. Include the following:
Character name
Class
Race
Background
Backstory (Impress with that backstory (roleplay heavy game)
Character description
Give me a line about your experience as well. Just curious about your experience level.
Again, this is intended to be roleplay heavy in proper English.
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT MAKING A CHARACTER SHEET AT THIS POINT. WE WILL DO THIS ONCE PLAYERS ARE SELECTED AND I CAN CONTENT SHARE THE RACE. HOMEBREW CLASSES ACCEPTED WITHIN REASON. POST THE CLASS NOTES IN A SPOILER SO I CAN SEE THEM.
Example: I run toward the gap in the floor and jump. This isn’t going to be good. Just prior to jumping, I cast light on my quarterstaff. As I land, I take a swing at the guard with my quarterstaff. “You killed my father!”
Any skills, attacks and damage rolls (rolls need to be done in the forum with the dice roller) in the third line like so:
I use it. I love the mechanic of it. That said, do cool in character stuff, get rewarded! I love seeing a character do the less optimal act because that's how your character would act. This is not a war game.
XP or milestone?
Milestone. I am not a fan of running games with XP leveling up. This gives the idea to players that killing everyone and everything will level up your character faster. I do not want to run a game filled with murder hobos killing everything in their wake and not roleplaying any other solutions. I will level your character when appropriate. Killing extra will not get you there any faster. I am not sure yet if you will be leveling up during this or not. Depends how "wowed" I am by your antics.
Initiative and combat:
Once we enter initiative, I will roll for everyone. This is to save time so we do not have to wait for someone to post a single roll to begin and proceed. The initiative will be listed in, most likely, its own post for easy access. I don’t want to tie the game up waiting for combat so if you take a while, I will post your action with your best interest in mind.
Loot and treasure:
Coins will be decided evenly to avoid a player vs player fight. The remainder goes to the Gods! You’re part of a team with some common goal, so act the part. Treasure items will be worked out between the party members. That is for you all to roleplay through and decide upon. No fighting like children. Looting will only find you coins and worthy items. I don’t want to have to deal with someone carrying 17 goblin swords to sell later for a grand total of 2 gp. I’ll give you guys coin and items so don’t worry about that.
Help action:
If you plan on "helping" another player to gain advantage, I won't grant it if you simply say "I help." I need to know how you are going to help this other person in this action. "I will help pull the door closed." "I will help push this item out of the way." Those would be fine to use the help action. Some actions I cannot bring myself to grant advantage for helping, such as lockpicking. How is a second person going to "help" you pick a lock?
Rule disagreements:
I don’t mind a discussion about rules (I’m still learning as well), but at the end of the day, I’m the DM (not trying to sound like a dick). The discussion will take place in the chat thread.
My only pet peeve:
Do not run my game and do not run another player’s character. We are here to have fun. This is not a war game where combat optimization is key, this is a roleplaying game. Taking over a game ruins the experience for everyone else involved. Don’t be that player please or a rogue tarrasque will take care of your character for me.
First of all I want to say I love the idea of goblins trying to run heists in Waterdeep. I hope I am chosen!
Character name: Skeekbad-who-sneaks-bad
Class: Rogue 1, Druid 2 (circle not yet determined)
Race: Goblin
Background: Folk Hero (amongst goblins)
Backstory: As a youth Skeekbad always wanted to be the best sneaky-stabber of all of the sneaky-stabbers, but unfortunately she was always distracted by her own thoughts and with her head in the clouds she was, frankly, quite clumsy; hence, the nickname. One day, she was out hunting a meat-thing with her compatriots, and stepped on a dry twig that made a loud *CRACK*. The meat thing charged at her and her friends, and as everyone else scrambled to get away, Skeekbad froze in place, staring at the long sharp-tusk-meat-thing barreling toward her. But as it drew near, it stopped its charge, skidding to a stop right in front of her. Skeekbad stared into the eyes of the meat-thing, and it stared back at her, and they both cocked their heads at each other for a moment. Then, with the flash of a knife, Skeekbad sliced the meat-thing's neck open and with a gasp it fell to the ground. Her friends carried both her and the dead meat-thing back home and the tribe ate well that day. The story spread around and soon enough Skeekbad was inducted as a shaman under the head shaman's tutelage and has finally found something that she thinks she might actually be good at, but secretly she still wants to be the best sneaky-stabber of all.
Character description: Skeekbad is small, even for a goblin, and her long black hair which is already thick is always thickened with a healthy glob of mud. Her skin is covered in shamanic tattoos, and her ears are pierced with sharp bone. She wears leathers but usually walks around bare-foot, and has a bone charm bracelet that she has to carefully put away whenever she wants to be sneaky because it tends to rattle. She wears a boar-skin cloak with the head of the boar resting atop her own head.
Previous Experience: I'm pretty new to PbP but I've been playing D&D since the dawn of time (e.g. 2nd ed AD&D as 1st ed was published before the dawn of time). I've played and DMed several 5e campaigns.
Thanks for running the game, and I look forward to rolling dice with you and everyone else, if not in this campaign then some other!
Backstory (Impress with that backstory (roleplay heavy game): Laglor grew up in a quaint little town. His parents were well respected among the citizens and were hard working and took great care of Laglor (or as best they could given that it was very poor and out of the way). But they always had everything they needed. However, Laglor didn't have everything he wanted, and that needed to change! He started out as a bookie when he would run around with the neighborhood kids. As he and his friends got older and more ambitious, they started burglarizing passing caravans. Things were going great for his growing gang, and it all benefited the town so no one asked any questions. Before they got too ambitious, a dragon emerged from his nearby lair where he had lain for generations untold and forcibly recruited the village to do his bidding. This arrangement held no appeal for Laglor (cannon fodder for half-baked dragon plans?...no thank you), and while he lacked the power or leadership to free his people, he didn't lack to sense or stealth to get out before he was forced to magically swear fealty to the dragon. He set out on the road for adventure! [Insert story on how he obtained magic - will be based on what class I think fits him the best... have to think about it]. With his newfound power, Laglor finally made his way to Waterdeep. He has only been in the city for a few weeks, but he has managed to find good sleeping arrangements (small alcove tucked, unseen under an eave), some great contacts to find out about the workings of the city, and a potential gig pulling off some big heists!!!
Character description: Laglor is a practical goblin who relies on his natural charm, elusiveness, and magic prowess to accomplish his own ends. While a criminal, he values trust with those he works with (he would prefer to con the mark, not be the mark]. While he can be dangerous and cunning, that doesn't stop him from being light-hearted as well. [I'm missing a really good flaw that will make him more interesting... I will have to think about it]. He would love to one day free his people from the clutches of the dragon, no matter if that entails killing the dragon or preferably, making a mutually and financially adventagous business deal with the dragon that will make them both rich and free his village from their obligations (only time can tell).
Give me a line about your experience as well. Just curious about your experience level: I'm a nerd on every level. At least with rpgs, I have played a lot of 5e and Star Wars RPG (fantasy flight). I have also played a bit of pathfinder, genesys, d&d 2e, and a few games of a few other systems.
Again, this is intended to be roleplay heavy in proper English: I speak English and enjoy RP
I have played we b goblins for pathfinder and being a goblin is some serious fun.
Character name: Larz Quiet-step
Class: full rogue
Race: Goblin
Background: larz' had grown up being trained by his father, who was the hunting party leader, to take his place when the time came. He learned the ways of the woods and how to "keep his feet quiet". And when he didn't he was beaten. He learned fast. He liked to find the shineys too, so he took what he learned from the wild and broke into a nearby city. Climbing through an open window after a new shiney knife, he was caught. Lucky enough to escape he had to grab SOMETHING, so he grabbed what was near by, a bit of clothing, just to prove how quiet he was to his father.
Character description: Larz is still quite young, only 7. Almost an adult, and soon to take over as a hunter. He wears a stolen sock as a braver along with the basic clothing everyone else has and a cap that he had also stolen (its actually one half of a black bra). Darker completed skin tone usually wears face paint (or mud) in streaks across his face. Short ears (maybe cut by punishment)
Give me a line about your experience as well.
I've played a few PbP games and also played pathfinder irl. And have seen all of critical role.
This sounds like a blast. Like the Gentleman Bastards except shorter.
Character name: Igun Getsum
Class Rogue/Gunslinger
Race Goblun
Background: Early training as an alchemist but Igun was kicked out of his apprenticeship because he kept stealing the components.
Backstory: Igun may have left the alchemy behind but he always kept his love for loud noises. He started tinkering on his own and stealing components and materials. Because he is self taught and lacking in any safety protocols he is always nursing some injury. He is missing two fingers and he is deaf in one ear.
Character description: The best way to describe Igun is singed and dangerous. His hair is wispy and there are always soot stains on his face. Usually wearing a leather apron festooned with tools. He is always looking for an excuse to make a bigger better explosion. He talks a little too loud and is likely to misunderstand those around him because of his deafness in one ear.
I have played for decades. My group has moved out of the midwest but I'm still in Lawrence, KS. Not a min/max guy just like to have fun.
I didn't even think of using homebrew classes. If you'd like to use a homebrew class (within reason), feel free. If you do, post the class stats in a spoiler please. It will be something we can work out in session zero during character creation.
I was thinking more of a tinkerer or something that makes explosions! There were several on the homebrew content. I could go with the wizard hit dice instead of the fighter. (Don't know why a gunslinger would be a fighter class anyway. ? Maybe a Ranger class.
I was thinking more of a tinkerer or something that makes explosions! There were several on the homebrew content. I could go with the wizard hit dice instead of the fighter. (Don't know why a gunslinger would be a fighter class anyway. ? Maybe a Ranger class.

Backstory: After escaping from execution by his original tribe for aiding the tribe’s enemies in a war, Neeblo sought to formally discipline his mind and body. He trained at mountain temple of _______&_(whatever monk subclass he going into, I’m not fully sure of that right now.) He spoke out against the actions of a higher-up and made a powerful enemy. This man exiled Neeblo on the grounds of disobeying the code of the monastery and Neeblo fled to Waterdeep.
Character description: Neeblo is tall and lean for a Goblin, standing 4’1”. His clothes are always of a rich and deep color and he wears a short cloak/cape. His actions and words are obviously carefully calculated and he usually maintains a calm demeanor. He believes strongly in justice and fairness, although he is not always right about what is just and fair.
Experienc: I’ve played DND for a couple of years now, but I’m pretty new to Play by Post.
Backstory: Tsux was born to a peaceful village of hunter-gatherer goblins. He was taught the ways of the land, and how to find the bountiful resources that fill it. One day a terrible fiend attacked the village. Tsux can't recall what exactly it was that attacked him, all he knows is that for whatever reason, it spared his life. Having lost his entire village, he headed out to find a new home. Living on the outskirts of society, Tsux finds himself as a petty thief and minor grave robber. Preferring to avoid conflict directly, he sticks to the shadows and stalks his targets in the darkness.
Character description: Tsux is barely an adult, he is 9 years old. He is 3'8" and his skin his pale, with almost a gray tint to it. He shoulder length black hair that is typically tied back or put into a braid. His eyes are pitch black, and are a bit unsettling to look into for too long. He is thin and lanky with arms that seem to long for his body. He is constantly looking around as if expecting something to strike from the shadows.
Experienc: I’ve played DND for about five years, played a bunch of pathfinder, but now mainly play 5E. I've played a few games of Play-by-post as well.
This game concept seems awesome and I am interested to see how this goes even if I am not chosen.
Character Details:
Name: Jallmur the Great Age: 8 Background: Archaeologist
Alignment: Chaotic Good. Race: Goblin
Class: Barbarian 1, Rogue 2
Backstory: Jallmur was born to a Goblin father and a Goblin mother. Shortly after birth, he was abandoned by his parents in a forest near the foothills of a mountain. Almost as soon as he was left there, a wandering Goliath found Jallmur and brought him back to his tribe. During his time with the Goliaths, a warrior lifestyle was pushed on Jallmur. Although Jallmur enjoyed fighting, he often found himself stealing things from the tribe without thinking about what he was doing. To combat this, Jallmur would travel to the ancient Giant ruins, where he would stay, often for days, admiring the relics of a bygone time. After a few years of a relatively peaceful life, Jallmur's Goliath tribe was attacked by a large party of tall fleshy creatures (humans). Upon seeing the fleshy people, Jallmur and his tribe (specifically Jallmur) began taunting them and making fun of their questionably crafted weapons and armor. Unfortunately for the tribe, these fleshy people knew how to fight, and slaughtered Jallmur's tribe. Because of his comparatively short stature, Jallmur was able to survive by hiding in the coat of a fallen Goliath While Jallmur hasn't lost his happy-go-lucky personality, he is anguished by the loss of his tribe and can be known to lose his temper. Jallmur is convinced he is a Goliath (since his former tribe never told him he was nott), and can often be seen wearing Goliath war paint. He is relatively tall for a Goblin. Although he likes to steal, Jallmur can very rarely convince himself to disturb the site of an artifact.
Appearance: Jallmur is four feet, three inches tall, has short, black hair, and a heavy build. He has hazel eyes and wears winter clothes year-round as well as a healthy amount of Goliath war paint. Jallmur tries his best to look as much like a Goliath as he can.
Experience: I've been playing D&D for five years and I run a PbP game. I have played all editions of D&D since 2nd.
Backstory : Wensa is unsure what her father did to anger her old tribe but it must have been bad. The tribe killed her parents and left her to die in the cold. Somehow Wensa made her way to Waterdeep and has been surviving off of what ever scraps of the city she can scrounge or steal. While hiding from the City Guard, apparently someone had stolen some fish from the market, Wensa heard voices and what sounded like fighting. Thinking she could loot the loser of the fight she snuck toward the sounds. What she found instead were training members of The Order of the Lycan. Wensa watched in amazement at powers they possessed. She started sneaking to watch the trainings regularly slowly learning the secrets of the order. Now she trains and waits for when she is powerfull enough to take revenge on all those who have wronged her.
Character description : Small even by goblin standards Wensa is about 2’ 8” tall weighing 35 pounds. She has greenish-grey skin and yellow eyes.
Give me a line about your experience as well. Just curious about your experience level. : I am newish to D&D but dove in head first. I am DMing a LMoP game at home, and am in a few PbP games.
