D&Z You can figure out what that means right? The zombie apocalypse is coming to D&D Beyond Play By Post! I would like this to be an ongoing game that can easily accommodate player drops and adds, allowing the game to continue on with an evolving and changing group of characters. Characters will begin at level one and advance on an experience point basis. New pc adds will be level 1, so at some point there could be mixed levels. Characters will die in this game. If your character dies, it may become undead. If this happens you can make another character and keep playing. Food, water, and ammo for bows and crossbows will be monitored at times. When needed there will be an ongoing count in my game posts of these resources. You may use any official race or class you own on DDB. POINT BUY; XP Advancement; Use Encumbrance; Show unarmed strike; Use starting equipment or gold, your choice! We will be using Ancient Greek Mythology, if you have any questions on that feel free to ask. We will run several game posts a week with open roleplay between major game posts. Please include your character's name at the head of every post!
THE Z's I'm not going to tell you everything, but I'm going to tell you enough to make an effective character! Everything that dies is rising to feed on the living. We will refer to them as "Zs". Zs have two armor classes and two sets of hit points. The body of a Z has a low AC and a high HP. You can kill one by hitting its' body enough but that won't be very effective. The head of a Z has a high AC and a very low HP. Hit it in the head to kill it, as you know from zombie fiction! You can probably expect other evil and undead creatures to take advantage of this apocalyptic event. If you are bitten or clawed (standard hit) there is a percentage chance that you will become infected. That percentage goes up for everytime you are hit. If you get infected you must begin death saves. If you fail you get sick and die of a fever within 5-24 hours (d20 +4) and become undead. *Those players who can deduce the Z stats or infection percentages will receive big XP bumps!
THE APOCALYPSE! You had heard rumors for months that something bad was happening in far off places, or maybe you were from those places and saw it yourself. The halfling farming village of Shadydale was consumed when their cemetery came to life with the rising dead. The catacombs beneath the Eladrin city of Wishfell erupted in an undead rage that destroyed the entire city. The Dwarves and Gnomes tried to lock themselves in the mines but there was no escape when the city of Ironhearth above them was over run. The human capitol of Freegrove held out in a valiant battle but fell to the death from within. They say the Wood Elves took to their tree homes in Frostfire for safety but an internal fight created the dead that destroyed them. These are just some of stories that have spread across the land.
CASTLEVILLA SANDORA This is where you are. A very old castle belonging to the Sandora family sits on a low rising hill. There are thirteen rooms and two towers. It is occupied by the young Lord Henri Sandora, his wife Caria and infant twin sons. The castle is surrounded by a small town. You can find all of the common guild artisan shops as well as a large inn and tavern called "The Dragon's Tale". There are about 200 people living here in the town. There are walls 30 feet high with iron and wood gates. there are 12 guards housed at the castle. Outside the walls are any number of farms and homes and a population of about another 500 people. there is a town square with a public well.
TO BE CONSIDERED TELL ME WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE AND WHY YOU ARE HERE IN CASTLEVILLA SANDORA!
Maceon Zorelle is a variant human Paladin of Dionysius. His personal motto is “A shot of whisky, a blow to the head. Drink with the living, dance with the dead.”
Background: Sailor
STR:16, DEX:10, CON:14, INT:8, WIS:8, CHA:16
Starting feat: Dual Weilder
Born in a backwater town where nothing ever happened, Maceon escaped via the sea looking for adventure. He found functional alcoholism, a deep faith in Dionysius, and that he preferred solid ground. The swaying deck of a merchant vessel is no place to have a hangover.
Of average height but thick build, Maceon has been wandering the world on foot only accompanied by the twin Morningstars he wields. With the rise of the undead and the fall of much of the civilization around him, Maceon has sought out a place where he might be able to help in the fight against the zombies. He believes he may have found it in Castlevilla Sandora, which seems intact and well positioned to defend against the rising hordes.
Rumors of its well stocked wine cellar may have swayed his opinion.
Kerrig is a Half-Orc Ranger who has faced more than his fair share of undead -- though he might call them "sleepies" as he is not the brightest...he's not smart. After serving a crime lord for several years and extorting many ordinary people without really understanding the ramifications of his actions he searches for a grander adventure as he strikes out on his own. He grew tired of serving his boss -- and someone burned down his boss's house around the same time that he ran away. Don't ask.
Background: Criminal/Spy
STR:17 DEX:15 CON:16 INT:8 WIS:8 CHA:8
While travelling and relieving people of their valuables he heard rumours, from one of the merchants he was robbing, of an unusually high amount of "sleepies" around Sandora. And of course where there were "sleepies" there were people who needed protecting -- for a price. Or he might just let them die then chop down the "sleepies" and take all the gold for himself. Either way, off to Sandora he went. A greedy glint in his eyes and the grin of a simpleton.
Edit: Put a few character concepts below to pick between. Initial concept overlaps on another person's above, so leaving a couple of extra options and don't mind which one to play:
Option 1:
Thrip Goldberry was once a member of the farming town of Shadydale, and had an adventurous heart. He enjoyed exploring the nearby areas and the wilderness, eventually taking on being a local guide for people who travelled nearby. He was under employ to take a party from Shadydale to another nearby town; the day after the whole village was lost to the raising dead. Upon hearing this news, he became more hollow and dark; now a refugee having to seek shelter where he could. Shortly afterwards he decided to take up a weapon and use his knowledge of the wild to learn some combat to hopefully prevent the undead from causing such things to others. He has dedicated his bow to Artermis, goddess of the Hunt, and a vow to Hades to make as many restless bodies be felled to let their souls return to the depths to Tartarus.
As for the reason to be at Castlevilla Sandora, he used his recently honed abilities to scout out the news of these undead and examine them, and has information for Lord Sandora based on his recon.
I'd like to play the below, but would I be allowed to swap out the longbow ranger gets for a shortbow? Just means my halfling has a bow more suited for his stature.
Race: Halfling (Stout) Class: Ranger Background: Outlander Starting Abilities (Post Racial): STR 12, DEX 16, CON 14, INT 10, WIS 14, CHA 8
Option 2:
Magrak Garroh lives in the tunnels beneath where most reside on the surface. As a svirfneblin, he learns to craft mighty pieces from the stone he was surrounded by. As a friendly nation, they would occasionally trade their arts with the surface dwellers. However, their sanctuary started to collapse when from nearly all entrances swarms of shambling bodies started to overwhelm their home. He is one of the few refugees that have arrived in Castlevilla Sandora, explaining the reason as to why they are seeking shelter.
Race: Gnome (Deep) Class: Rogue Background: Clan Crafter Starting Abilities (Post Racial): STR 8, DEX 16, CON 14, INT 15, WIS 10 CHA 12
Option 3:
Cassandra Ynvoleth is one from a distant cave, and has blood that is descended from the three gorgons. Her outcast nature meant she was a loner for a while, eventually attempting to join into civilisation by lying, cheating, and stealing; albeit she was not a thief at heart, more a manipulator. Before she made her way away from those of her kind, she made a deal with an agent of Hades, as she had a prophetic dream that the gates of The Underworld would be broken and the dead would walk the realm. She will do her agent's will, so long as she survives this upcoming threat.
Race: Yuan-Ti Pureblood Class: Warlock (Undying Pact) Background: Charlatan Starting Abilities (Post Racial): STR 10, DEX 12, CON 14, INT 14, WIS 10 CHA 16
Imbryn is a Fire Genasi who is haunted by the death of his family. He travled between towns as traders with his extended family, trading wares and passing information. His family had at first dismissed the reports of the brewing apocalypse but, as more stories came from everywhere, they began to accept its truth. Soon they were carrying various weapons they could scrounge up and posting watch by night. He was standing guard the night his world ended.
The horde came from the opposite side of camp, they had sighted their prey before their presence was known. The horde descended through camp like a tidal wave. Anyone who managed to get to their feet armed were consumed before they could brace themselves. Imbryn watched in horror as his life was shredded before his eyes and the remaining pieces rose up to claim him.
His broken heart gave birth to a flaming vengeance of his soul. His body spewed forth this vengeance and wreathed him in flames as he destroyed everything from his life. His life fueled the flames and when everything around him was reduced to ashes his vengeance faltered and he collapsed from the drain on his life. He awoke a Blood Hunter, his very life worth the cost to consume his enemies. He continued on toward his former family's next destination, The Dragon's Tale Inn.

How does the zombie's different AC's affect spells with saves? Will the head have higher Con/Dex/Wis etc. if we want to target it with a spell requiring a save?
Ekcis Starpike is a freelance investigator specializing in planar phenomena and magical crime. When he first heard rumors of an undead outbreak he largely ignored them as we was horns deep in a case involving two bodies of the same countess that turned up dead in separate locations, miles apart, from entirely different circumstances. When the tales of undead started to spread, Ekcis put out some feelers to contacts he had in several cities he had heard were affected; he received no responses. He was on the verge of wrapping up his case when he was approached by a retinue of the king's secret watch. He was offered an inordinate sum of gold to investigate the undead outbreak and report back any information he found as to the cause, symptoms, or a means to stop it. Not one to leave a case hanging open, he quickly notified the count who had hired him on his original case of his wife's dalliance with a fey humanoid that lead to her bizarre death (he left out the fact that her original form was still very much alive and "active" in the Feywilds to give the man some closure). That business done, he booked travel Castlevilla Sandora, if his analysis of the event patterns was correct, things were about to get quite interesting there.
Wuldaar Cealdraath, a Dragonborn Sorcerer, travelled far. Wherever he went, he saw only destruction; the Undead's desire for death knows no end. God knows how often he had fought them, ran away from them. He tried to save some, but they never lasted long. Now, he is just tired. He had heard recently from one of his former companiens of a place still standing, CASTLEVILLA SANDORA. He hopes this place might give him some rest, because sooner or later it will fall like all the others. 12 Strength 13 Dexterity 13 Constitution 13 Intelligence 13 Wisdom 14 Cha

Martial archetype: Champion (if he were ever to breathe the rarefied air of level 3)
Level: 1
Alignment: Lawful Good
Background: Folk hero
Ability scores: STR 17 | DEX 12 | CON 17 | INT 10 | WIS 10 | CHA 9
Backstory: Waking a few hours after midnight to the sounds of mayhem outside, Elrik and his younger brother Dunivik stumbled into the fog where they witnessed their alpine village being overrun by a band of orcs. When the sun rose a few hours later, it revealed not only loss of life, property, and gladness; it revealed the twisted irony that Elrik would now be both a richer and a poorer man. Richer because he now bore the mantle of village hero, for he had fought bravely and fiercely. Poorer because Dunivik was not to be found, not even among the slain. Thus began Elrik's path from place to place-- a path he hopes will lead him to the brother he adores and to opportunities for his words and actions to bring honor to Athena, she who embodies what is wise and civilized. Of late, curious rumors and scarcely believable tales have prompted Elrik to travel eastward. For in the east it seems that both wisdom and civilization are under siege--under siege by something wholly mindless but entirely unrelenting. And so it is with weary feet, tired eyes, and dwarven resolve, that Elrik Eldenfrost, hero of Findrithor, enters Castlevilla Sandora, which he hopes will prove to be a decent respite for at least a day or two.
He was training getting prepared to join his castle's forces (not Castlevilla Sandora). He was very good at what he did and was better than most of the other recruits. Although the weapon of choice for many was the sword, Jose opted for the glaive. He was fascinated by its design and construction and soon became proficient with unlike any other weapon wielder in the group. One day, on a test to see whether him and his patrol were ready to join the army, they were ambushed by something they'd never seen before. They called them the Zs. Many were lost that day and those that did survive had spilt and knew nothing of where there other members lie. Eventually, after a week of running from the Zs, Jose found Castlevilla Sandora and has remained there today prepping for an attacking knowing the Zs are inevitable.
A Warlock would probably be amazing in this having its short rest goodness + eldritch blast sniping/unlimited use. Maybe even bard eventually dipping into Warlock to snag eldritch blast and then taking fireball with its magical secrets to deal with hordes. You'd also be able to snag hex too and then you could start TEARING apart hordes without having to worry about getting hit.
Skits was born into a small poor village, his parents one of the more poorer families that lived there. But his thirst for knowledge led him out of his village and into the world. When he was only the age of seven he set off into the world leaving his parents and friends behind to learn all he could about the universe. After many days of traveling he found another small village and stayed there for a couple days, during this time he learned of a sorcerer who could teach him a summoning spell of sorts. He left the next day to find this sorcerer and ask him about the summoning, after many hard ships and encounters with very different people, skits finaly reached the resting place of the supposed old sorcerer. Unfortunately though this home the sorcerer chose had to be one of the tallest mountains that existed, so he started climbing and climbing. He kept telling himself it was for knowledge and he had to keep going, by the end of it all the mountain had put a physical toll on his body yet he couldn’t give up. He ventured on till he found the entrance to the sorcerers home, he nocked and waited many a days till one day the door opened and there he stood as old and wrinkled as they said he was yet still there. He asked him about the summoning but the sorcerer refused to teach him and shut him out right away. So he waited again till may days later after he was skrawwny and feeble the old hag opened the door and told him it was his demise but he would even do the spell for him. The weak bodied skits hobbled into the hags home and sat patiently till the old sorcerer came back out with all the ingredients. They started the summoning right there and skits began to think this may have been a bad idea, but he continued through with it. At the end of the spell the room became quiet and the sorcerer covered his eyes. Skits looked at him then back at the spot of summoning just as a bright flash of light blew into the room. Skits could feel his body and mind changing forever as information flew into his head to the point of madness. Then it all ended in a second, and skits was permanently changed. He tried to write down all that he had learned because his human brain just couldn’t keep all of it from floating away. He left the sorcerers place with a full head and a weak looking body, yet he still felt as young as he was he just didn’t look the part. Many stories have been written about skit, the crazy gnome who couldn’t live with out information, it’s said that the information that he received was what killed him because no has seen him for over 15 years.
He is at the castle today because he had figured that the more people in one place the easier the escape if the zombies showed up
