tl;dr: This is a D&D 5e role-playing adventure looking for one (1) well-meaning 1st level character. We will be playing Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, with some house rules detailed below. Send me a private message with your character idea. I’ll choose someone, and we’ll start playing.
——
Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, is getting ready for winter. As the cold and the snows come, the streets become emptier, the gates close, and commerce slows to a crawl. People stay inside, comfortable and warm. And safe. Because Waterdeep is also under a blanket of unease. A gang war has broken out on the streets, and while many remain unaware, the citizens closest to the streets are all too close to the blood being shed. The City Watch is on alert, and amid the swirling snow and short, overcast days, even among the most removed from the fray, in the highest towers, in the best lit ballrooms, there is concern.
But you’re not worried about that right now.
Right now, you have stepped foot into the storied Yawning Portal, a tavern that shakes off the cold and the worry for bright lights, song, and revelry. As you blink in the brightness, you take in the three levels of balconies, the crowds of people, some of whom may even be famous adventurers! A wide cross section of the Sword Coast is represented. As you work your way in, you see that a small group of adventurers is making ready to be lowered into the eponymous portal! The crowd is alternately cheering them on and taking wages on their demise, and the first one is already hoisted over the pit, an employee at the winch ready to lower him!
A server waves you over to a table, and asks you what you fancy.

This is the recruitment thread for The Long Road: Dragon Heist. We have four players who remain after the introductory gathering adventure, The Cottage on the Long Road. We are looking for a fifth player. The game will start when we have found that fifth player, and I hope to have that done within a week or two.
If you’re interested, you should do some homework first, to make sure you’re actually interested. You can read up on the first adventure, to get a sense for the other players and my DM style. You can follow along with the interim RP thread we’re running to get the existing party to the Yawning Portal in Waterdeep, where Dragon Heist begins. And you should definitely read the stuff about me, my DM style, what I expect from players, and what you can expect from me. Also, I’m using a small metric ton of house rules, which you should be comfortable with before we begin. Here are some links:
Here’s my website with info you should read about me, my games, and what I expect from players
That same site explains the house rules I like to use. The most important house rules you should agree to live with are Concurrent Initiative, and (for this adventure) slow natural healing (with a Healer’s Kit dependency). These are changes from how the game is played RAW, and thus important for you to understand. The other house rules are in force yes, but mostly amount to how I interpret existing rules. You might be interested in how I adjudicate Passive Perception, or skill rolls in general, but I don’t expect it to be a real bone of contention. Edit: I've stricken the need to have a Healer's Kit from my healing house rule. It was just extra paperwork, and can be role-played well enough.
Still interested?
1. DO NOT post a reply here!
Send me a private message on DDB with your character proposal (a simple narrative, stats, a fully formed character sheet link… whatever) by the deadline (see 2, below). There is no “first come, first served” so you do not need to rush.
2. Send me a PRIVATE message with your proposal by the deadline: no later than Monday, February 11, 2019
If you are interested, please do not post a character proposal publicly.
This is a long campaign, so feel free to delve into your character’s background and such. If you’re proposing a native of Waterdeep, be sure you are ready to play that. Waterdeep natives will have some greater responsibilities in the party (you know the laws, you live here, you may have more invested in the city, etc.).
Added:The current party covers all four cardinal party requirements: cleric, fighter (barbarian), rogue, magic-user (sorcerer), so there is no gaping hole you have to fill. Feel free to propose any class you'd like to play.
I have one absolute requirement I mentioned above: your character must not be evil. More generally, I require the characters to be well-intentioned. Whatever their alignment.
The game details of your character are not important in the proposal stage! That said, we will use official D&D 5e rules, including all the supplements (SCAG, Volo’s, Xanathar’s etc.). Abilities are determined with the official standard point-buy system. Once accepted you will have access to those books here on DDB via content sharing if you don’t own your own.
Homebrew items/backgrounds/etc. will be considered on a case by case basis, so make your case if you want something.
3. Then you wait to hear from me while I decide who to invite
I will look at your proposals and may ask you questions. At some point, I will decide who to invite to the game. This is what I am looking for:
Is your character interesting to me? I assume it is interesting to you.
Do you communicate well in writing? Not too succinct, not too florid. For better or worse, online asynchronous role-playing is defined by writing, and writing can sometimes be misconstrued (see: social media).
Do I like your forum avatar? No, I’m kidding. But there *will* be other, less determinate reasons why I do or do not pick people. Sorry.
You do not need to be experienced with D&D, or with playing by forum post.
You do need to have a basic (free) DDB account and room for a character.
Once I decide, I will reply to your private messages and let everyone know what their status is:
Accepted. I will tell you how to proceed. Not accepted. I may not accept your proposal, and reserve the right to do so without needing to explain myself. There are only so many people I can have in the game at one time. Online games have a lot of real life attrition. If someone drops out, I will contact people on the waitlist, and you can join then, or tell me to piss off.
4. If accepted, *this* is when you’ll need an actual character.
If you are accepted, I will send instructions and a campaign link. You will then create your character and link it to the campaign. Depending on your origin and backstory, we will introduce the characters to each other, and set the stage for adventure.
Remember, if you’re interested, send me a PRIVATE message with your proposal!
Replies on this thread will NOT be considered proposals. You have until the deadline, so take your time, acceptances will NOT be on a first come, first served basis.
Proposals are due no later than Monday, February 11, 2019
