The year is 835 PD. The long-time conflict between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty has reached a boiling point and it is a power keg, ready to explode. Smaller armed clashes have become commonplace along the border between the two major powers, displacing locals on either side in the area and forcing them to flee elsewhere. Our adventure puts us in the middle of the conflict, deep within the Brokenveil Marsh of Xhorhas, near the border of the Dwendalian Empire, specifically in the mobile settlement of Urzin. A settlement of about 6.000 people built upon the backs of the native horizonback tortoises, its close location to the border has caused a small influx of about 100 refugees, who have dared to venture through the treacherous marshlands in search of refuge from the war. Although it falls under the rule of the Kryn Dynasty and is guarded by a few members of the Aurora Watch, the goblinoids and gnolls of Urzin are welcoming those, who are willing to work and defend the settlement against the dangers of the marsh and from the war, should it reach that far.
Hi everyone! I am looking to run a campaign set in Wildemount. I've noticed that a lot of these games tend to start in the Menagerie Coast (including those I play in) so I figured I'd try something different by throwing the players right down in the middle of the brewing conflict between the two warring factions. I'm planning on starting off with the Unwelcome Spirits adventure and branch off from there into an open campaign.
I am specifically looking for a number of people (undecided on the party size yet) to join a campaign with an overarching plot for you to dig into while you explore the continent of Wildemount and possibly beyond! I'd prefer to put together a group with similar timezones who will be active around the same time (looking at my fellow Europeans out there) to hopefully minimize the time between replies, but it's by no means a requirement. You can also find more details about the game and character creation below. I'm hoping to start the game sometime next week depending on when players are ready.
If you're interested in this game, send me a private message. Please include the following information:
Your time zone.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
Character concept (does not have to include race or class).
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation).
You do not have to make a character before applying - I'd actually prefer if you didn't. If I add you to the campaign, you'll be able to get access to my content library which includes plenty of content you can use when creating your character as well as access to the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount to help build your character.
Game Details
System: D&D 5e

Character Creation

Characters start at 1st level. Point buy or standard array for stats. Standard equipment for your class for gear. Fixed hit points.
No evil-aligned or disruptive characters.
Floating racial ability score increases - pick what ability scores you add your bonuses to as you like.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
I am a critter and I have been searching for a campaign that set in Wildemount for quite some time now but have no luck so far. I do not have many expectations other than a fun and relaxing campaign where I can roleplay my character. That being said I hope there are chances for us to roleplay both with PCs and NPCs.
Character concept (does not have to include race or class).
A tiefling who comes from continents outside of Wildemount. She is adventurous who likes traveling and sees the world. That is the reason she comes to Wildemount.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation).
Valzes grew up as a homesteader in the wood of Brokenbank Island. She was the only tiefling in the tribe. She has always been a wanderlust kid, always dreamed about going out and see the world. When she became 22, she left her home leaving a note saying goodbye to her family then made her journey across the ocean to Menagerie Coast. During the voyage, she was visit by a creature with a glowing yellow eye. It granted her some kind of power without her consent and said they had made a pact. She have to help it achieve its goal for it granted her power. Recently, her patron made her traveling to Urzin for some reason. (PS: the backstory is not fixed. I can change some details to fits the story.)
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations? As one who has watched a few episodes of Critical Role, and have been trying to get into Pbp campaigns but never chosen, I would like to try my hand at finally joining. I'm looking to have a fun time RPing and trying out the Wildemount setting.
Character concept (does not have to include race or class). The character I thought of is an aged Aasimar veteran. He has worked as a spy for his respected country, fought in war, served time in prison for a crime he has not committed; He has had a rough life.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation). Growing up in a life of privilege, this aasimar would enjoy a happy upbringing in his family mansion. A hyper and rebellious child, he turned against defying authority at times. To get him off the streets and away from crime, his family signed him up to a program to work with the guard. He had a great talent with people and joined a network of spies for his country. After the war, he got married and attempted a happy life despite the dark memories of war. At the age of 44, this veteran would be framed for a crime he didn't commit and sent to a labor camp for five years. By now he'd be 50 years of age and released from the camp, he is on the journey back to Urzin to speak to his wife, though he has not heard a letter from her in two years.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?: I'm a really big recent can of CR. I only started listening to the podcasts over the summer and have already been through Campaign 1 and caught up to th current episode of Campaign 2. I've joined 3 Wildmount campaigns but all three have died due to either a lack of players or the DM disappearing a few days or weeks into it. My only real expectation is to have fun and hope that the campaign doesn't end up dying.
Character Concept: I have a few ideas but for now will put forward the idea of a recently reactivated Warforged that was recovered from an old ruin out in Eiselcross, a product of one of the Pre Calamity floating mage cities. I am thinking of going with the Armorer Artificer once Tasha's comes out. I would say that the abilities it gives are features built into the body.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin: After being taken back to be studied by the Cerberus Assembly in Rexxentrim, they slowly regained full functionality over the course of several weeks. Upon being given a bit of freedom to move about they started to learn about the changes in the world. As the studies of it continued the Assembly found that the Warforged was meant for battle and decided to send it out to the border with Xorhas to see how well it would do fighting the Krynn. The first battle it was involved with turned into chaos and upon seeing a chance they escaped and fled into the Marshlands. Eventually they came upon Urzin and was given a place to stay in exchange for helping.

Rekuberk Onc Level 8 | Half Orc | Barbarian (The Tales of the Fellowship of the White Cloaks)
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations? : I love long PbP campaigns, even if it can get a little slow. What I love about it it's how easier it is for me to RP on a written format than it is talking in front of people at a table, due to me being neurodivergent and because it just allows me to write and describe details that would sound mechanic or awkward if said in a live play. I love the journey of getting to develop my character and explore their world, and sharing that experience with the group as we all just have fun together. Also, I'm going to go directly address the possible elephant in the room: While I love what I have seen so far, my knowledge of Critical Role is limited to the first two episodes of Campaign 2 and a bucketload of spoilers, so I'm going into the world of Wildemount mostly blind. But if there's a thing that I saw there and would love to see here is the amount of RP opportunities and having a really fun (and hopefully very long) journey.
Character concept (does not have to include race or class): A True Neutral or Chaotic Good character with a strong dislike for conflict and unnecessary violence, and who has had some very bad things happen to them and might have something of a gruff or stoic exterior and quite a few secrets as a result. Someone who might not initially care much, but who has strong ideals and would try to help the party in any way they can once their trust and loyalty has been earned.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation): I actually have a few in mind, so I'll post some of them. These are just short examples of the type of character I would like to play and are in no way a "final product": If I get chosen, I could either mix aspects of two or more of them into a single character idea or just roll a different character all together:
A Drow or dark elf who isn't a part of nor shares the Kryn's religious ideas. No, she was actually born and raised in a religious cult that was either a part of or directly inspired by the Church of Vhaeraun and were still worshipping that god. She considers herself a Vhaeraunite and firmly believes in some of the teachings she was given (Equality, rebellion, freedom, no in-fighting when you're part of a group and always appearing trustworthy to others), but she's not religious in a regular sense: Gods are to be worshipped and respected, but they are not to be fully trusted. She's a firm believer that peace can only be accomplished if all sides involved are working together, but she has no idea how this could be archieved. She's also against the usual chaotic evilness and treachery associated with her faith for this very reason, as she deems it harmful to the ideal of cooperation and equality they were supposed to be fighting for. She's in Urzin because she's hoping to find there a way to stop the war.
A half-orc druid who was falsely accused of a crime she didn't commit when she was just a child and has been on the run ever since. After a long time of living in the wilderness with just wild beasts for company, she hears about a place nicknamed the City of Beasts, where races like orcs, goblins and gnolls live peacefully. Not having any further context than that, she decides to travel there, not knowing of the possibly very grave mistake she's making and just what she's about to walk into on her way there...
A character from a Sage background (Be a Wizard or some other class) who has traveled to Xhorhas because they are trying to gain some knowledge on Dunamancy. Their current stay in Urzin is purely for research purposes.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
I am normally a DM offline and online, so if I see a recruiting thread I'll normally try to join.
Character conceptShort backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin
A warlock who's girlfriend died. He made a deal with a devil, if he collected enough souls from the deceased, he gets his girlfriend back. He is in Urzin because he is hoping to get some souls from the war to pay his end of the deal.
“But no living man am I! You look upon a woman...You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
I'm a Critter since 2015. My real life group mostly doesn't watch it, though. So a Wildemount campaign wouldn't be as great as doing one with people familiar with the setting. As a fan, I'm hoping for a campaign that takes the setting somewhat into account rather than just be some generic adventure (given that this plays in Urzin, this is already the case it, seems).
Character concept & Short backstory
A human Chronurgy Wizard. I'm thinking of a consecuted former Drow, who died in a skirmish near Nogvurot 16-20 years prior (or wherever is more appropriate). Reborn to human parents, they spent their childhood within the Empire. Just as they were about to join the Soltryce Academy however, they startet to remember bits of their former life and seek answers in Xhorhas. They will still write letters home to their human parents, pretending to be at the Academy in Rexxentrum.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
I've been watching critical role for years and I love the Wildemount setting, so needless to say, I have wanted to play in it. I'm aware of the current situation on the continent, but I haven't read the Wildemount book, so I can't metagame! (which is much more interesting to me, to see things as they come at me rather than know in advance)
For expectations: I just want to have fun taking part in collaborative story, roleplay my character, and be suprised by the DM and my fellow players!
Character concept & Short Backstory
Tiefling bard who was driven out of his home village with his wife after a zealous priest turned the town against them.
Short Backstory
His wife got sick while they traveled and slowly faded away over a year. He sang to her to lift her spirits over that time. When she died, he hit the road singing the songs she loved because he couldn't bear to be where she died. He has ended up in Xhorhas because it's easier for a tiefling to make it here.
Why do you want to play in this campaign and what are your expectations?
I have watched the first 20 of critical role season 2 and really like the world of Wildmount. I DM in my home games and are looking for ways to run a campaign set in Wildemount . I also often struggle to get into PBP so I am always looking for a good PBP to join.
Character concept (does not have to include race or class).
A half-drow raised by his drow father in Urzin. Taught to be a rogue at a young age.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation).
Sorn Khalazza was the son a drow thief and a dwendalian soldier. They where in love and kept the soldier hidden in the drow's house but when the soldier gave berth to their son their neigh boughs found out and had her taken away. Sorn was hidden by his father and was raised in secret. At 12 his father started to reach him the tools of the thief. At 16 Sorn looked close enough to a drow to walk freely through the streets although he still had to keep a distance from authority. One day on his way home he saw the authorities taking his father away. Since than Sorn has become a simple thief stealing from those with to much power in Urzin.
Time Zone: Mostly the US's Mountain Time Zone (GMT + 7) but often Central (GMT +6)
Why & Expectations: I became a Critical Role fan earlier this year and have been trying to catch up to the current campaign 2 episodes (almost there). I took a job that has me working away from home for the next year so I've been fortunate enough to get into some PbP games which is helping me pass some of the time away from my family. As far as expectations I prefer a DM that interacts as much as the players but I'm pretty easygoing and can adapt to however the group is playing.
Character Concept/Backstory: I think I would like to play a bugbear native to Urzin. Possibly a spore druid or a ranger. He would team up with whatever group of adventurers formed to help his town out because he doesn't want to be left out and hopes to prove himself useful to his family, friends and neighbors.

So I’ve not listened to CR, but did listen to the Beyond Heroes campaign as it arrived in Wildemount, and I’m excited to learn more about a new setting (I’ve got access to the source books, so I’ll go and have a skim through them...). I’m also keen to both play in a game in my own timezone (I’m in a couple US-based PBP games) and to explore RP from a non-typical race & background
Character concept (does not have to include race or class).
I’m actually interested to play a Goblin character, which I think would gel with your plans (I’m thinking rogue, but can adapt if needed). He had a troubled relationship with his father (maybe some form of abuse for either him or his family, and he’s come back to stop the abuse / kill him, depending on how dark you want to go), and decided to leave home in order to escape, and to find his strength. His journey has taken him to places he didn’t expect, but also led to him training and gaining the skills and maturity that he sought.
Short backstory explaining why your character is in Urzin (backstory can be elaborated on after character creation).
He’s just returned home, with skills and experience, to find home very much in need of him and his new skills - but he’s changed during his travels, and grown in confidence, so I’m anticipating some tensions as he naturally steps into more of a leadership (or at least independent) role amongst his old tribe, due to his competence and confidence - while those he left behind will still be thinking of him as he was previously. (I’m harkening back to Dragons of Autumn Twilight in my thinking, in terms of a homecoming)
I played RPGs before, but haven't played much of 5e. As such I want to play a few different characters to see what classes I like playing.
Character Concept:
A changeling Bard
Backstory
A wander that looks for stories and adventures. Writing down his experiences on both sides on the conflict. He travels across lands with his songs to brighten the days of others. He recently found himself wandering to Urzin on his most recent adventure across the land.

I'm closing the recruitment itself for now - if you haven't gotten my message, I will still keep you in mind in case anyone I've picked backs out before we start.
