So I found a couple of good folks on the internet talking about a fairly obscure ruleset from older editions of Dnd called "Gestalt" and wanted to give it a shot. Thought perhaps a PbP for 3-4 players might be best for this sort of thing, but if you're interested in a low-level, high-power kind of game using some homebrew feats to keep up with the special ruleset, give this link to a basic ruleset a review and post your interest below with a pitch for a character. Couple sentences of background would be great - give me a sample of your writing style and what kind of character/story you might want to play out. I'll GM, but I don't have anything specific in mind for this one shot/short campaign. If you need to generate stats, point buy or manual rolled are fine.
He has lost most of his memory from his past life. He believes he was a Druid but somehow he is now also now a wizard of time. Perhaps that was why he was reborn in this form. His fire spirit lives on in him as well.
He is slow and meticulous. Wanting to understand how things work. He is loyal to his friends and ... he thinks he may have had a family. He balances the two forces fire and time and is always looking for new ways to combine them for the benefit of others.
I'm really interested in applying to this campaign but would like a little clarification before I do so. I understand the premise of Gestalt rules, but here's my question; let's say I start Fighter / Rogue, and get a few levels in Rogue as we advance. When I'm Fighter 3 and Rogue 3, I decide I don't want anymore levels in Rogue. So when I get to level 4, I'm then Fighter 4 / Rogue 3 / Ranger 1. Does this work? Or does it remain Fighter / Rogue for the whole campaign?
To be clear, I have no idea what I'd actually be trying to build at the moment.
Looks interesting, ill put something together soon

Great Question! So far as I have read, I think the answer is yes - the idea is that you'd basically be playing a Fighter 4/(Rogue3/Ranger1) - does that make sense?
Office of the Inspector General Official Board of Inquiry
"Private Hooper, how would you describe Corporal Valdus's behavior leading up to the incident at the Better Halberd Inn?" The Officer said from across the table, pushing his spectacles up a little higher on his nose and then reaching back to adjust the legs behind his elvish ears.
"I'm uh...well that's quite a question." Private Hooper said, squirming a bit in his seat. "You see, she was real quiet in the wagon during the uh...the uh...the convoy, I guess. And uh...well you know...Corporal Valdus isn't usually like that she's uh...well she's like..."
"Would you describe Corporal Valdus as a killer?" The other Officer, a Warforged with a welded-on metal mohawk asked. His blank stare unnerved the Private.
"I uh...yes sir, but that's not the first word that came to mind but uh...well, with all due respect, ladies and gentlemen...Corporal Valdus is what you made of her."
The Officers, the Warforged, the Elf, a Dwarven woman with a shaved head, and Human woman with lean features, all exchanged glances, before the Dwarf looked at the Private and squinted.
"Then let's go back to the question. No, no, better yet. How would you normally describe Corporal Valdus? Was there something different about her before the incident?"
"Oh, yes ma'am." Private Hooper said. "Corporal Valdus is a uh...well see...she's mean, ma'am. She's good at what she was trained for. Can't ask for no one better to be on your side when you're in a fight but she sure is scary sometimes. I guess when she heard who was in there she uh...well she just decided you know...well. You know what happened."
"And if you had to describe the Corporal in one word, Private, what would it be? Normally?"
"Rowdy."
Margarette Valdus's marriage didn't end in a divorce, as some marriages do. Instead it ended in violence, when she found out her husband had been seeing that heffer Orc that worked at the Sick Rat tavern when he was supposed to be coming home from work. After kicking his ass, she stalked off to the inn with a club in one hand and a molotov cocktail in the other. What happened next is still part of Larkburg legend. The whooping that said heffer Orc took is still talked about to this day, as well as the fire that burned the Sick Rat and the surrounding houses to the ground.
Her arrest was where her life took its turn. Having been given the choice of rotting in the dungeon for the next decade or doing a tour of duty with the Skullsplitters Infantry, she chose military service, where she was picked (through some lucky coincidence for her and some unlucky coincidence for pretty much everyone else) for Commando training. Simply put, she learned the arts of survival and stealth, how to hide with ease and how to practically disappear into darkness. Her lethality with a bow was unmatched. Sabotage. Infiltration. And worst of all, she actually liked the job. While this was good news for keeping her with the Skullsplitters, it was bad news in other ways.
Specifically, restraint wasn't exactly her strong suit.
Her military dossier was closed after a board of inquiry accused her of overzealous actions during a raid on the Better Halberd inn where the Skullsplitters were tasked with the capture of a high priority target; one Gor the Gouger, the leader of an outlaw band of Orcs who were responsible for raids all across the countryside.
The same Orc that had promised to kill her the first chance he got after what she'd done to his sister.
Needless to say, Margarette still lives...
Thanks for taking the time to read my application for your campaign!
I like to create diverse characters with interesting builds, so I think this Gestalt campaign would be a great chance to do so. I've been playing with the concept of building a Commando for awhile, and so took my opportunity here.
Margarette will be a Fighter primarily that focuses on an Archery fighting style. She'll take Feats over Ability Score Increases in most instances, as I want her to pick up Crossbow Expert, Sharpshooter, and Alert at the very least.
I plan to play her with a bit of a dual personality. She can be quiet and reserved, withdrawn as she listens to what's going on around her and takes everything in...and she can be rowdy, spoiling for a fight, ready to slip into the shadows and smoke someone.
I'm interested. I'll put some details of my character soon.
Name: Delise
Race: Beasthide Shifter
Class: Fighter/Wizard (Samurai/Bladesinger)
Sample Backstory/RP:
A beasthide shifter who was found orphaned in the sand dunes until she was adopted and raised by a merchant family, whoi happened to specialize in swordsmanship too as she later found out in her teen years. Her adoptive family's town had a history of waves of monsters attacking and pillaging the commoners, so she was trained to learn how to wield weapons to one day defend her hometown should be in peril like the past times. Her swift, evasive fighting style has earned her fame amongst the townsfolk despite them being aware that she was clearly an outsider. Though she's proud to have a supporting family despite her obvious differences in appearance, Delise too often wants to know what was beyond the extended reach of her hometown, which, thanks to her feral instincts, causes her to leave her town one day in search of adventure, whilst making promise that she will return one day.
This sounds extremely fun. I would like to apply and the following is my application:
Name: Shavaris Arnuanna
Race: Wood elf
Class: Rogue (swashbuckler)/Fighter (echo)
“Shit. We got Valdus? I mean.. weren’t there other choices, or didn’t we at least get to choose who we’re stuck with? Damn it.” She pinches the bridge of her nose as Private Hooper relayed the unfortunate news of their new recruit. “Well, how long do we have before this shitstorm falls in?”
“She already arrived, sir. She’s unpacking as we speak I believe.” Not liking being the one to always draw the short straw, Private Hooper was slowly inching his way back towards the door. He knew how Shavaris enjoyed target practice and those damn blades were always strapped to her belt.
She fumes. He can see it and visibly winces. “Already? Why the hell did you wait so long? Fine! Send her to the range, I want to see what she is capable of.”
Shavaris Arnuanna was a wood elf that had been part of the Skullsplitters as long as she could remember. Sure, she had the small inklings of some far off brothers and sisters frolicking in the trees, but who had time to reminisce about things like that? She had more important things to think about.
At least, she used to. Until Margarette Valdus entered her life that is. The two became thick as thieves once the woman joined her squad. Shavaris was always good at stealth, but Margarette really brought out the fighter in her and the elf showed Valdus how to work in the shadows. The pair left the rest of the squad in their dust on most of their missions and it helped keep the rest alive, so for the most part, it worked.
Until the raid on the Better Halberd Inn. Shavaris doesn’t really know how it happened, but well, she wasn’t going to leave her sister to handle this on her own… now they were both on the streets, but at least the orc never will be.
Definitely interested in participating. Here's my character, the backstory is tied with another player who should be applying soon.
Cyndril Lumensong The Wandering Magician Arcane Trickster Rogue/Bladesinger Wizard Variant Human
An itinerant wizard, constantly traveling from place to place. Sometimes acting as a performer of petty tricks, other times as a conjuror of greater magics. He was born in a monastery, as part of an ancient and sacred lineage of holy warriors. However, he had quite the temperament that was expected of someone born into his position unlike his twin sister Vivian, who was both much more respectful of the monastery and expressed the angelic blood of their lineage much more strongly. More interested in arcane tomes than holy texts, more likely to participate in pranks than prayer. He chafed under the strict regime of the monks, who in turn felt that his chaotic presence what quite unbefitting of his lineage and a detrimental influence on his sister. In his childhood, he always maintained a good relationship with Vivian, though her uptight personality and the attention placed on her had always caused some resentment to form. It should have been of little surprise then when Cyndril left the monastery on one fateful evening.
When a traveling troupe of performers passed through the area, the boy took his meager possessions, stole a sum of gold, and slipped away to leave with the traveling entertainers. At first, it was simply a convenient way to escape the monastery unnoticed, but the Cyndril quickly became fascinated with their flashy acts and displays of showmanship after watching their performances. Resolved to join the circus, he managed to persuade the troupemaster to take him on by showing some of the magic he had learned during his childhood at the monastery. He apprenticed under the magician of the circus, an aging wizard who taught him the skills of illusion and enchantment. These were some of the best times of his life, traveling with the circus and performing across the land. All good things must come to and end, however, and with the twin losses of the bankruptcy of the circus and the death of his master, Cyndril had no choice but to leave and seek his fortunes elsewhere. This time, he took an interest in learning the deeper secrets of magic.
Now, he acted as a solo performer. A nomad traveling from town to town, performing magical shows in taverns and inns and helping with various odd tasks. All the while, he tried to learn as much as he could about the wizardly arts. Certainly no easy feat, considering the state of his finances. His journey eventually took him to a forgotten shrine in the middle of the wilderness, where there was said to be vast stores of arcane knowledge ripe for the taking. The opportunity being too lucrative to ignore, Cyndril immediately took off in search of this ancient structure. At the shrine, destiny took a turn and the Lumensong twins were reunited. Vivian had been dispatched on a questing journey by the monastery, a sort of pilgrimage and rite of passage, and it had led her to the same place as her brother. The two did not recognize each other at first, as the years had changed the both of them significantly, but as they observed each other it became clear. A shocking realization, to say the least. After assisting his sister with a matter at the shrine, the two made the decision to travel together on pilgrimage and journey.
Vivian Lumensong The Radiant Soulblade Oath of the Ancients Paladin/Hexblade Warlock Protector Aasimar
Vivian Lumensong, a name steeped in the sacred legacy of a great lineage, embodied both the celestial blessings of her heritage and the noble calling of her people. Born into a revered monastic order dedicated to a god of light, purity, and nature, she was seen as a divine gift for it was centuries since the last Aasimar was born to the Lumensong. Within the walls of the temple, Vivian's childhood was filled with reverence and discipline. She blossomed under the watchful eyes of the order's elders, her radiant presence and innate connection to the divine setting her apart from her peers. Alongside her, her younger twin brother, Cyndril, also held the weight of their lineage upon his shoulders.
As they grew, it became evident that Vivian and Cyndril possessed contrasting natures. While Vivian embraced the traditions of the order with respect and reverence, her angelic heritage shone through her every action. Cyndril, on the other hand, wrestled with a tempestuous temperament that defied the expectations placed upon him. Despite their differences, they shared a deep bond as siblings, and Vivian cherished their memories together. In an unexpected turn of events, Cyndril's fiery spirit led him away from the monastic order, leaving Vivian and the temple's guardians in surprise. His departure left an indelible mark on Vivian's heart, her thoughts often drifting to her brother and the unknown path he had chosen. She had thought their bond stronger than that.
Years passed, and Vivian's devotion to her faith deepened. Under the guidance of the order, she embarked on a sacred pilgrimage to an ancient grove. There, she underwent a transformative ritual, taking up the Oath of the Ancients—an oath that resonated with her connection to nature, love, and the preservation of life. However, it was during her very first quest as a newly sworn paladin that fate wove an unexpected tapestry. Vivian found herself standing before a long-forgotten and abandoned shrine, its ancient power beckoning to her. As she ventured deeper into the shrine's depths, a familiar presence emerged from the shadows—an individual with eyes that mirrored her own.
It was Cyndril.
Though they did not recognize each other immediately, Vivian's heart stirred with an inexplicable connection. With Cyndril's assistance, they discovered a sentient weapon within the shrine—a Hexblade that offered Vivian a pact, an opportunity to forge a symbiotic bond that would allow her to grow alongside the weapon. Touched by the significance of this reunion and the power of the Hexblade, Vivian hesitated momentarily, her mind torn between her duty as a paladin and her longing for her lost brother. In the end, she made the difficult decision to accept the pact, intertwining her fate with the enigmatic weapon, and embracing the path that lay before her.
The symbiotic pact with the Hexblade marked the beginning of a new chapter in Vivian's life. The radiant light of her celestial heritage merged with the essence of the Hexblade, transforming her into a force to be reckoned with—a Paladin of the Ancients, infused with the exotic powers of a Hexblade. Vivian Lumensong embarks on a profound journey of self-discovery as she continues her pilgrimage and quest that must go on before she could return to the temple. She seeks to uphold the values of her order, protect the innocent, preach the word of her god, defending the natural world, and bringing light to the darkest corners of existence. Along the way, she hopes to reconnect with her brother, Cyndril.
