First thing I do is confirm that my equipment is all there. 

Next I will call forth my echo and have them pick the book before I examine it myself.

(Going to grab some lunch so my responses may be slowed a little)

your echo picks up the book and suddenly a great light comes from within the pages you can now see the walls are covered in runes and also that someone else is in the room you know not wether he is freind or foe the book is in common and may contain valuble information on how to escape or it could be a trap.

in the light you also notice all of your belongings are gone except for your shortsword but there is a chest in the south corner mabey its in there

I go to check the other person.
