Most people stopped believing in monsters under the bed long ago. Most people see fantasy as just that: make believe. But then, you're not most people.
There's a secret world of monsters and magic hiding just below the surface. For your average citizen, that secret world never comes to light. But for some, it becomes their whole life. Gangs of monsters engaging in turf wars, lone creatures wreaking havoc on cities, and guilds of hunters all struggling for control. When things go bump in the night, you bump back.
The year: 2018. The place: Orlando, FL. You've known for a long time that monsters and magic are real, and you've taken it upon yourself to shoulder the mantle of protecting the world from mystical threats. It's thankless work, what with the fact that the vast majority of the population doesn't even know they were in danger, nevermind the fact that you’ve saved them.
For more information on setting and some base rules, check out the following Player’s Guide.
You’ve been framed.
You’re not new to this game, so you know who the Bureau of the Extra-Normal (BEN) are, and the kind of reputation they have. But as the kind of hunters who know when to keep your heads down, you’ve never expected to get on their bad side.
Last night, however, BEN Agents busted down your door and brought you, in magical handcuffs and hoods, to a secure location. Thrown into a cell, you find yourself amongst strangers and other hunters, all with the same goal: to get out and clear your names.
Character Creation:
Please private message character sheets to Dungeon Maya and DungeonDad, as we will be co-DMing this game. Do not reply to this thread with them. If you have questions, please feel free to message us. Both DM’s love the “Rule of Cool”: if it sounds cool and not game breaking, we will probably give you a lot of creative license. But please run crazy stuff by us, and be aware that we may ask you to change some things. Characters will start at third level with one common and one uncommon magic item.
For stats, we will be using the +10 rule: after all racial modifiers and feats, all of your ability score modifiers should add up to a +10. We recommend you have one negative stat, and none of your stats should be above an 18 at this level. You can have a maximum of two odd stats.
Some things to keep in mind…
Your backstory should address these key questions: How did you come to know about the magical world? What do you do (if anything) when you’re not adventuring? What experiences have you gone through that have brought you to third level?
You should also include what you have been doing recently, and why you think BEN may have imprisoned you.
The majority of characters in this setting are human. If you are planning on playing a non-human, expect to have some ways of keeping your appearance hidden and some serious reasons in your backstory. A full elf cannot merely cover their ears with long hair and a beanie all the time; it has to be more than that.
If your character is planning on using a gun, carefully read through the Player’s Guide. Guns are always non-magical weapons, and magical resistance/immunity is even more common in this game. Your gun will probably not be as effective as you want it to be. This is not a debatable feature.
Languages are different in this world because they need to be. Most fully magical races live on the Feywild, and as a result use Sylvan as a sort of magic-Common. If you would like to know languages such as Spanish or Sign Language, use languages like Orc or Elf as placeholders, and write in the notes section what languages you actually know.

This campaign will rely on Discord heavily, both for dice rolls and for extended periods of quick roleplay. Once accepted into the game, you will be given an invite to both the Beyond Campaign and a Discord Server. You are expected to make an appearance and participate at least once a day.
This game will be very heavy on the role play, and both DM’s tend to dislike characters that have been min-maxxed. We play to tell a story, and if that isn’t your style then neither of us will have a lot of fun.
Recruiting will be closed at noon on Friday, June 1st.
I am very interested in where you are going with this. My friend and I have been looking at starting a campaign based in the fallout world, and this looks like a great way to playtest DND in a more modern setting. We co-gm games, and have a hard time finding a group because our work hours always conflict. Play by post seems like a great way to get started since we can post multiple times throughout the day, sometimes in long stretches, but don't have to be available at the same time to play.
I have a couple questions, and was going to message you, but figured other people might have the same questions, so I'm posting here instead.
The guide doesn't list classes available. Are you using just the players handbook, or are other classes available to choose from? Same question for class archetypes. Will you allow UA or XGTE archetypes for classes?
If playing a Druid, does BEN overlook the fact that you can turn into a "monster" because you are a hunter, and you're using your powers for the great good?
I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I wanted to get this out there, so I can start designing a character for submittal. I'm honestly pretty stoked at this idea.
I don't plan to play a gunslinger type of character, but question for you, even though it's not debatable. The idea that a rune could be carved on a bullet, making the bullet, not the gun, magical. I don't want to start on the wrong foot, and I'm not questioning your choices as GM,s just getting an idea of your mindset. It helps me to know how you think, so I know what to expect. Just curious about your reasoning for the decision, not debating it or trying to sway you to change it.
1) You can use any classes/races/subclasses available on DDB. We’ll be relying heavily on the character builder, so no UA but anything that’s been published as a book is ok. No homebrew races or classes at this time, however.
2) As a druid, you can technically turn into ‘beasts.’ The same way the FBI really doesn’t worry about bear attacks, BEN knows that it’s part of the job.
BEN is also not in the business of throwing every magical creature in jail. So long as balance and order are maintained for the most part, they are perfectly fine with monsters running around.
3) A rune on a bullet wouldn’t work for the same reason a cell will spazz out in the vicinty of a spell: magic and tech don’t mix. The magic bullet would go inside the gun, which would probably lead to a misfire. This is an evolving world, but we have our reasons for keeping magic and tech separate.
Thanks for the clarification of this also wondering how much time. Between closing of entry and the start of game we will get to know if we've been chosen.
I'm super interested in this campaign, looks like a lot of fun, and I read several urban fantasy book series. Would blood hunter be allowed? It's not quite published in a book material, but also not UA or homebrew, so...
That's fine as I can already see you have many people interested in this setting as even the concept is great as I don't believe I've seen a setting of this type before.
yo maya and dad for rangers im just wondering if urban is an option for a rangers favoured terrain since it is modern times also is it set in 2018 and where will it be set eg america? just curious thanks
well you did ask for hunters lol anyway sorry about my constantly editing document just want to make it right also best of luck i already see a minimum of 7 players here who are vying for the chance to join the campaign best of luck.
Thank you again. Your responses make perfect sense. I've been having a blast rolling up this out of the box character. I think I almost have him finished but need to clarify one more thing.
Clarification on the +10 rule, because I've never used it before... Human normally gives a +1 racial bonus to all scores, but there is a human Variant that gives +1 to 2 scores, 1 skill proficiency, and 1 Feat. If I was to take this Variant, my scores should be +6, due to losing +1 4 times, but I would get a skill proficiency and a Feat. Would this be acceptable? Or would it put my fellow too far behind the starting stats for the rest of the party?
Do you need to see where I'm at currently in order to answer the question?
Thank you, that much did make sense based on Maya's original description of the rule.
Where I'm slightly questioning this character getting the full +10 is the race variant offering a Feat choice in place of the usual ability bonus that would be there. A Feat typically costing a character 1 to 2 ability points. (Depending on the Feat, since some give a +1 to an ability still). This fellow is choosing a Feat for extra "power" instead of getting the full +6 in ability point bonuses a human would get. He gets +2 and a Feat instead.
So maybe he ends with a +8 and a Feat instead of +10? I just want to make sure he fits in properly.
Whether you choose a feat that gives you no bonuses, a feat that gives you a +1 to an ability score, or a race that gives you a +2 and a +1... All of your ability modifiers should add up to 10 when all is said and done. A couple of people have been confused about this, so don't worry too much! We can always help you fiddle things if you didn't do it exactly right.

@LordwolF The +10 rule is applied after you've added you ability scores to your character.
So you need to make sure your ability modifiers add to 10 AFTER you've added the racial bonus.
Thank you, that much did make sense based on Maya's original description of the rule.

@LordwolF I think you answered your own question XD
Just go with the variant human and gain the special "bonus" of having the feat.
Whether you choose a feat that gives you no bonuses, a feat that gives you a +1 to an ability score, or a race that gives you a +2 and a +1... All of your ability modifiers should add up to 10 when all is said and done. A couple of people have been confused about this, so don't worry too much!
