I'm an experienced DM who has run a few campaigns in person and primarily run 5e. My friends largely enjoy homebrew campaigns, so while I've wanted to run the Rime of the Frostmaiden module for a while, I've never had the opportunity to do so. To that end, I would like to run a (somewhat edited) version of Frostmaiden with you here. I say edited because there's a few sections that will be altered, and because I may end it with Auril instead of doing the final, unrelated area. I expect everybody to be able to (usually) post once a day.
The campaign will be played on a forum thread here. While I'm not planning to run anything especially adult, I'm looking for players age 18+ so that we have comfortable freedom should a sensitive topic come up. I'm mostly going to play things serious, but am open to an occasionally joke-y tone. I'm looking for 4-5 players to get started.
If you're interested, please post your character's name, background, class, and anything else you think I should know. We'll be starting at level 2. Please use your choice of Point Buy or Standard Array when making characters, and know that I allow a free feat at character creation (just not Sharpshooter or Great Weapon Master, as they produce too much damage for my liking sub level 4). Standard PHB Races are allowed, alongside Goliaths, Genasi, Tritons, and Goblinoids. If you really want to play something else, ask and I'll consider it.
Additionally, I run a few homebrew rules:
1. Drinking a potion is a bonus action. Feeding it to someone else is a full action.
2. Multiclassing is limited to 2 classes per character.
3. Unless you're charmed, there's a teamwork purpose (such as maintaining a rage), or something similar, we avoid PvP.
Barnabus is a soldier in the local town guard. He has shown resilience and honor in the execution of his duties. Because of his stalwart attitude and dedication he has just been promoted to Sargeant. Barnabus is currently on leave as a reward for his service.
" My line will not be crossed. On my honor I will hold my line. The shield next to me will add their line to mine as I add mine to their's. When I am strong my line is strong. When my line is strong our line is strong. A strong line will not be crossed! OUR LINE WILL NOT BE CROSSED ! "
Barnabus would recite the shield bearer's oath over and over in his head as he stood guard. He took his posts seriously regardless of perceived status. Be it a late night watch on a seldom used locked service entrance or a shipment of valuable goods, he attacked each assignment with vigor. When not reaffirming his oaths he would review the battle strategies of his training. He would picture formations and techniques designed to create advantage on the battlefield for those fighting alongside him. Although behind him would be a more accurate description. A favorite tactic for the shield corps was to create a shield wall to provide cover for those attacking from a distance. The corps would knock enemies prone creating opportunities or arrange the battle field in ways that might funnel enemies into advantageous positions.
His dedication to duty and execution to task had garnered the eye of his superiors. He had just been informed that he had recieved a promotion. In addition he had been granted an extended leave. He would recieve his new posting when he returned.
I would love to run this campaign! I would like to play as:
Morkeleb, a white dragonborn paladin (or paladin-to-be, will take an oath of glory)
(used point buy system, but I haven't added the feat yet, I'll work on that later if selected)
Outlander background, his chromatic dragon ancestry has made him a bit of an outcast
Backstory - as a descendent of evil white dragons which were vanquished by heroes, Morkeleb has always had mixed feelings about that. He believes the heroes that killed his ancestors were heroic and their deeds were just. But he also wants his ancestors respected for the powerful and noble creatures that they were. He wants to try to reconcile those feelings by going questing and infusing glory into his family name. He wants to redeem his family name through heroic deeds.
( hey, I understand that the campaign is super cold, if you think it's cheesy that I picked white dragonborn for cold resistance then I totally understand and can easily change his color to red, fire resistance instead! )
I love RotFM. We had a fantastic group playing it but unfortunately had to cease in the early stages due to player and DM time constraints. I would love to pick up my previous character and breathe some new life into them, but for the moment let me submit a pious ranger...
Chaya hails from Neverwinter with her mother being an Ashamadai cultist who worshiped Asmodeus the ruler of the 9 hells. Chaya lacked the fervent faith expected of the cultists, but she had a keen interest in magic. Her mother used a minor magical trinket to disguise Chaya as to not draw attention to her and sent her to the learning halls of Neverwinter. Chaya an avid learner rose to grade 2 spellcaster and was so proud until a spell misfired and caused her trinket to break, revealing her true appearance. She was detained and was told she would be sent to the magistrate. Fearing trouble and implicating her mother she broke out injuring her guard in the process. Before leaving Neverwinter she left a note for her mother and then headed north as she had read no one cared who you are or what you have done in the far north.
Utilizing his natural proclivity for being in the cold, Nox made quite the living as a smuggler and conman working the trade routes of the Icewind Dale and the Trackless Sea. However his good fortunes would come to a swift end when one of the vessels he was operating on wrecked itself upon a massive iceberg, throwing its crew into the icy depths. During what seemed to be his last moments, Nox found himself reaching out and praying for anyone or anything to come to his aid. He would later awake to find himself stranded on an ice flow with the symbol of Bahumat embedded into his palm.
His story: He is a child of Dugan's Hole and grew up for the most part without parents. When he was 12 he was taken in by a monastery in Bryn Shander where he learned the way of the monk. With the darkness falling upon ten-towns they have asked for volunteers to venture forth and fight against whatever is causing this.
Pukka has fond childhood memories of the time the Many Arrows Kingdom was at peace and now that she is grown having survived the fall, the coup and the exile of her people she wants to head out and try and discover her own purpose. Always slighter and smaller than her fellows due to her distant grandmothers dalliance with one of the Uthgardt she struggled to find her own path but has found hiring herself out as a guide to southern explorers to be somewhat profitable. She is unsure of her future but is willing to work hard to achieve it.
Unhappy with his simplistic, nomadic life along the seaside shores and deep seas, Sigurd joined the priesthood of Oghma. He now wanders the lands seeking adventure.
I've heard some awesome things about Rime of the Frostmaiden, and would love to be considered!
Character: Nemona Charon Race: Half-Elf Class: Wizard 2 - War Mage Background: Custom (Soldier feature)

Talic was born in Blustich, a small village in Cormyr, where the Wyvernflow joins Dragonmere. His father was human, his mother an Ondonti half-orc who had previously been a Zhentarim slave. Like many young Cormyrians Talic signed up for service as a member of the Purple Dragons. After serving his initial two years he re-enlisted for another two years but became disillusioned with the military life and left when his second enlistment expired. After leaving he felt the call of Eldath, becoming a Freewalker, travelling throughout Faerûn in her service. Although dedicated to a life of peace, he found there are times when the only option is violence.
Hey! Me as a player: I’m still learning D&D, but have played a few campaigns. Enjoy the RP a lot. I’m a respectful player, and try to keep things fun. Generally post daily, but understanding when others can’t.
Background: Alastair is middle aged human and a former soldier. Having seen some rather brutal combat, he’s really searching for a place to call home so he can live out his life in peace. Having lost friends and teammates, he has a gallows sense of humor. He has a strong sense of honor and tends to defend his friends to his own detriment. While an effective soldier, he was generally assigned to groups that were considered expendable. As such he’s always skeptical when things look like they’re going well.
He’s always on the lookout for good whiskey, and has a massive soft spot for kittens and puppies.
Thanks for the show of interest. To anybody that still has a placeholder post or is considering this, I'll likely be picking players (semi-randomly) tomorrow. So get any info you need in tonight if you haven't yet..
Background: When very young, a lucky shot killed a marauding wolf and established him as a local legend. Since then, he has improved his abilities to come close to his reputation, but knows he is not yet the full hero his village needs to protect itself in this cold and turbulent time.
