I've been interested in Tomb of Annihilation for a while but haven't quite gotten the chance to play it, so I'm running it instead :) however, official modules on their own tend to be at a different pace and style than I enjoy, so I will be modifying it both in setting and other aspects while keeping to the original theming. The setting will not be taking place in Chult and will be instead taking place in a homebrew world of mine, but don't worry too much about those specifics when making your characters as I'll be adapting it to your ideas. I'm looking for probably around 4-6 players total, and plan to start at Level 1 but you will level up relatively quickly with a milestone rather than XP system.
I'm a mildly experienced DM and have a very deep understanding of the 5e system, so we will be using 2014 rules for this. It is also Tomb of Annihilation so there will be dungeon crawl segments and puzzle/combat aspects, so I won't be holding your hand through it but I'm not going to TPK. There will also probably be more roleplaying aspects than the original ToA.
I'm also an undergrad student currently so bear with me if I take a little bit to respond, though it'll be a day at most as I'll try to pop in every day (mostly in the early morning and afternoon CST due to classes). I'll drop some basic setting information and character creation info below, but don't feel the need to make your characters yet. I also have access to a campaign sharing (that is not mine, so I'm not sure if it's full) that I can provide upon request.
Character Creation: You'll be using one of the following arrays, 18 16 14 12 11 7/ 16 16 16 13 10 8/ 17 17 12 12 9 9/ 17 16 15 13 11 8, or you can roll twice (4d6 drop lowest) and pick your favorite set. 2014 only!!!! I do not want to see 2024 feats, spells, classes, or items so the stats stay consistent. Homebrew is absolutely allowed upon request, I'll look over and make edits if I feel there needs to be some, and I also have a lot of homebrew if anyone is stumped for ideas. This rule might be a bit strange but I prefer if people make martials that they used the reworked version I made with my friends (here) which make martials a lot better and more fun. Currently, I only have Monk, Rogue, and Barbarian remade for martials, but I also have a reworked Druid that places an emphasis on Wildshape instead of spellcasting. Custom background only, no feat backgrounds unless you give me a really entertaining and well thought out reason as for why you should have one. Tasha's and Xanathar's is approved fully. Roll gold on this thread if you're choosing that. You get one common magic item upon character creation (it cannot be Clockwork Amulet).

Campaign Setting: Your characters will all be congregating on a distant island comprised of mostly jungle and tropics. Whether you're native there, marooned on the beach, backpacking on vacation, or whatever reason, you've arrived and have some sort of connection to the central temple of the island. The name of the island is Saolam, and it is currently unowned by any occupying power and considered dangerous due to the wildlife and fauna, which tend to be comprised of dinosaurs and other semi-mythical beasts. There are small settlements on parts of the island, but anything too large draws too much attention. The central temple and dungeon is said to be the ruins of some scorned angel's place of worship, falling into disrepair after the angel's name was lost to history. It remains untouched due to its location and how little people know of the island itself, and even the story of it being some fallen angel's place of worship falls under scrutiny. The island of Saolam additionally is known for its high population of lycanthopy and undead related illnesses, such as mummy rot, something that has plagued the settlements there since arrival.

You might want to tweak some of the features of a background so it better fits your character or the campaign setting. To customize a background, you can replace one feature with any other one, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. You can either use the equipment package from your background or spend coin on gear as described in the Equipment section. (If you spend coin, you can’t also take the equipment package suggested for your class.) Finally, choose two personality traits, one ideal, one bond, and one flaw. If you can’t find a feature that matches your desired background, work with your DM to create one.
Basically, instead of choosing a background (Soldier, fisher, etc) you just choose two skills that best fit your character and two languages or tool proficiencies. Don't worry about the bonds and flaws.
