I would like to run the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure with the aim of encouraging new(ish) players of DnD and/or PbP to partake in the adventure.
I'll run the game with 2024 rules for a party of 5 adventurers. It would be great if at least 4 players are new to the play by post format and 1 (maybe 2) more seasoned player(s) to kind of set an example within the game.
I will keep recruiting open until 11pm EST Friday April 4th.
More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin (pronounced fan-duh-lin) prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.
A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
For centuries, rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around Phandalin, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine. In recent years, people have resettled the area. Phandalin is now a rough-and-tumble frontier town. More important, the Rockseeker brothers — a trio of dwarves — have discovered the entrance to Wave Echo Cave, and they intend to reopen the mines.
1st-Level Characters (expect to reach level 5/6 by end of campaign)
Point Buy
XP Leveling (will be awarded upon scenario completions)
Fixed Hit Points
Starting Equipment:
The adventurers will be traveling from Neverwinter. Players have the option of selecting the standard equipment for their class or gold. Because they are in Neverwinter, they may use the gold to purchase whatever items needed at standard shop prices:
Be respectful of your fellow adventurers. This is always first and foremost.
Players will be expected to post a minimum of twice per week. I will check the thread twice a day.
Dice rolls will be made through the DNDBeyond campaign character sheet/game log.
This campaign provides plenty of combat and role play opportunities. It is up to the party to decide if combat is the best course of action for any given scenario.
No need to submit character sheets just yet. Simply provide a brief description of a character you would like to play, along with your play history (or even lack of play history!) I understand some may not yet have access to the 2024 PHB and will share that in the campaign once invites are sent.
I'd be interested. I just started playing the game but always looking for more and I like that this one is bit longer and potential for more. Not sure on my character yet. Just putting my hat in the ring so to speak.
My character is a nine year old half-dragon, who likes to explore the outdoors. He is a ranger, Level 1, with XP leveling. I can change it to milestone if you want.
My character is a nine year old half-dragon, who likes to explore the outdoors. He is a ranger, Level 1, with XP leveling. I can change it to milestone if you want.
Looking over the campaign, XP Leveling will be best. XP will be awarded at “milestone” moments, but it’s not always going to be enough for a complete level until additional milestones are met.
Was thinking of making a Goliath barbarian if allowed somewhat have his story he’s hunting down a dragon that burned down his village and killed everyone in his tribe and won’t let anyone or anything get in his way. He leans towards some evil but I can change it if it’s not allowed. And somewhat of a new player played 1-2 games.
I am a seasoned player, so if I understand if I don't get picked. But I will make my interest known, and I will post my character application once I complete it.
Name: Rethos Zorahn Class: Sorcerer Experience: Seasoned Player and PbPer. Character Sheet:https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/144212371/xsVq0O Backstory: Rethos grew up on the fringes of civilization, the child of wanderers who made their living mapping ruins and guiding merchants through dangerous lands. From a young age, he was drawn to the mysteries of the world—ancient symbols carved into forgotten stones, whispers of lost magic carried on the wind.
His own magic awakened suddenly during a harrowing storm when bandits ambushed his caravan. A surge of divine energy erupted from him, scattering their attackers but leaving him shaken and confused. Unsure whether this power was a blessing or a curse, he sought guidance from sages, scholars, and wandering mystics, hoping to understand his gift.
Now, at the beginning of his own journey, Rethos has taken up the mantle of a guide, offering what little experience he has to those setting out into the unknown. Though still untested and unsure of the full extent of his abilities, he is determined to help others navigate the dangers of the world—if not with wisdom, then at least with courage.
Completely understand I’ve changed his story a bit and took out some bits so he’s not evil. Hopefully this is better
Gorthag was born larger and stronger than most Goliaths, but he grew up in a hidden mountain tribe made up of outcasts—those deemed too weak or unworthy by their original tribes. Unlike them, Gorthag thrived on strength and competition, struggling to understand their peaceful ways.
Feeling out of place, he eventually left to prove himself elsewhere. He came across a Goliath warband, whose chieftain saw potential in him. He was given a greataxe and tasked with bringing back a feast for the entire tribe—a test of strength.
Determined to prove himself, Gorthag hunted relentlessly—slaying dire wolves, bears, and finally a young forest dragon. His success earned him a place among the warband, and the chieftain even adopted him as his own son, training him in the ways of battle.
However, the dragon’s mother—an ancient and vengeful beast—eventually tracked down the warband, furious over the loss of her child. She set the village ablaze, killing nearly everyone, including the chieftain. Gorthag fought fiercely, but the dragon left him scarred and burned, barely sparing his life.
Instead of being consumed by vengeance, Gorthag sees it as his duty to destroy this dragon—not just to avenge his tribe, but to prevent such destruction from happening again. He wields the greataxe that once felled the young dragon, believing it is his responsibility to finish what he started.
Now, Gorthag wanders the land, seeking allies and strength to fulfill his oath of justice. He does not kill out of hatred, nor does he seek destruction—only to end the threat of the dragon once and for all.
Born in shadows, forgotten by fate— orphaned in goblin dens beneath the city’s weight. From murky depths she emerged, a wraith on the run, haunted by scars, chasing a destiny undone.

I'd love to play if y'all still have room. I was involved in one pbp that lasted about a week before the DM just disappeared.
A Drow rogue who just escaped the under dark.
I’m adding names to the list until this Friday. The party will be a group of 5 and I’ll do a weighted lotto draw that will favor newer PbP players such as yourself.
I’d also like to have at least one seasoned player like Beginner_Bots just to kind of help mentor by example.
Names not drawn will be added to a wait list, because it is inevitable that life will roll a nat20 against someone and they will need to drop from the adventure.
Been playing D&D since 2nd edition, well about a month before 3.0 came out. I have also had some experience with PbP but each campaign died off around the year mark because of how slow the campaigns were going.
Character Concept:
Name: Tallrick Mistborn
Species: Forest Gnome
Class: Warlock (Great Old One)
Once the shame of a respected wizarding family in Neverwinter, Tallrick Mistborn failed out of the academy after years of magical blunders and mounting disappointment. Desperate to prove himself and reclaim his family’s pride, he turned to forbidden tomes, back-alley scroll dealers, and late-night wanderings through arcane districts.
It was on one of those nights he encountered a veiled woman preaching the return of the Autumn Mother—a forgotten goddess of magic, rebirth, and balance. Since that night, Tallrick has been dreaming in red leaves and hearing whispers only he can decipher. When his magic returned to him, it did so naturally, effortlessly—as though it had always been there, waiting.
Now, with newfound purpose and power, Tallrick believes his destiny is finally beginning to take shape—even if he doesn’t fully understand the source of his gifts… or where they might lead him.

So that you know, I've just started doing PbP recently, but I'm more of a DM on here, and I would like to be a player a little more. Never played a bard before and wanted to try it out here before committing to a tabletop campaign as one.
That being said, I am very experienced as a wizard (for tabletop). If you would like that for your campaign, I would be happy to do that.
Conall "Galanodel" (Moonwhisper)

Wizard
Born into wealth and privilege, Galanodel—who prefers to go by "Conall"—was raised in a household that valued tradition, status, and control. His parents, powerful and respected figures, spared no expense in his education, hiring the finest tutors to mold him into a proper heir. He excelled in his studies, mastering history, magic, and even a touch of swordplay, but the rigid expectations placed upon him became suffocating. The final straw came during a heated argument with his parents. They demanded he stay and follow the path they had laid out for him—one of duty, responsibility, and obedience. But Conall longed for freedom, for adventure beyond the gilded cage of his family estate. That night, he packed his belongings and fled, leaving behind a life of comfort for the unknown. Though he tells himself he has no regrets, a part of him still misses his family. Yet, the thrill of the open road, the endless possibilities of the world, and the chance to carve his own destiny keep him moving forward.

Goliath barbarian is fine. The evil dynamic could cause friction with the group. As DM, I would leave that for the group to roleplay.
I've updated the rules post above and added a little background for the campaign.
