Black Oak village sits along busy a waterway, wedged between the river and the black oak forest. Black Oak Village has been plagued by the Blood Scales gang for quite some time but recently their crimes have been escalating. What started with small thefts and assault has now grown into much larger and better organized schemes. There is currently a bounty on the head of the Blood Scales gang leader, as well as any of its members. Mayor Wilfred Higgins is willing to provide an old inn as free lodging and a base of operations to anyone willing to answer their call for help, and put an end to the Blood Scales once and for all.
***************** About the game *****************
This is my first attempt as a DM. I want to give the players a home base that they can customize by paying the carpenter to upgrade rooms, add equipment, and furniture to their HQ that would give them bonuses on the tasks they try to complete. I like the idea of making money, but also being able to spend it... So many times it seems like a waste collecting loot and treasure if you don't have anything to really spend the money on. Especially if you are stuck underground, or in a never ending dungeon, or on an island, or deep in a jungle... and by the time you finally make it out with all your loot, the campaign is over and the character is put on a shelf.

Name: Thimbol Race: Halfling, Lightfoot Class: Rogue Backstory: Thimbol is a thrill seeker at heart, and a thief by profession. Coming of age, with no money to his name and not much skill besides going by without notice, Thimbol ended up in the Blood Scales gang when they first started out. The small, petty crimes always seemed harmless enough, but when that wasn't enough for the leader, Thimbol merely left without word. A difficult choice for sure as the gang wouldn't be happy about his desertion, but the gang was going down a path he couldn't follow. Now to stay alive, Thimbol has to stay one step ahead to avoid being sought out by the Blood Scales and yet, keep up with his former life style of stealing just to survive. Goals: To no longer need to look over his shoulder without fear of being backstabbed. Stealing has become second nature to Thimbol and he's not sure it's something he could ever give up. He only needs to become better at it. Notes: I can post daily without trouble.
Rin was found as an infant by an acolyte of Lliira, the goddess of joy. The human who found him brought him into the monastery and raised him as his own.
Whether his parents are alive or not, as well as his Tabaxi true name, remain unknown to Rin. He is curious about his origins, though life has many things to keep his active mind occupied. His Tabaxi background is just one of many deliciously interesting mysteries the universe has to offer.
As he grew up, his order was quick to encourage his natural inclination towards curiosity and artifact hunting. They often sent him out on quests to find new and wondrous artifacts of Lliira. Rin was all to happy to do this as it engaged his desire to see new things. This also got him out of the temple when his never ending questions grew tiresome to the elder acolytes.
He always returned from his trips, sometimes taking far longer than expected, but never empty handed. On occasion he even found the sought after artifact. Other times, he would bring back a precious gem or a book of lore.
The first time Rin returned with something other than the sough after item, the temple elders asked him where he got it. He replied, simply, that the previous owner had not taken adequate measures to safeguard such an interesting object. Seeing the beaming sense of joy in Rin's face, and having no idea where he had been, the elders decided not to question further.
Little did they know that he kept all the most interesting bits and baubles for himself, secreted away in a glen not far from the temple. He would often spend days, or even weeks, there when his trip was over before he was ready to return to temple life. One such trinket is the shard of a broken blade. Rin found this while exploring the depths of a dungeon in search of...well, he doesn't really remember what was looking for. The glimmer of the blade shard caught his eye and he was immediately intrigued by it.
As he reached out, a soft voice came to him, offering him great power. The kind of power that would let him truly explore the world and effortlessly traverse even the darkest depths where all the most interesting bits of treasure lie.
The temple provides Rin with a stable-enough home while he isn't exploring, and the freedom to roam the realm to his heart's content...and do the occasional favor for his mysterious patron.
Character name: Manuya Abudemi Character level - 1 Race - Yuan Ti Class - Cleric - Grave Domain Backstory - Manuya believes in the narural order of death, how people shouldn't shorten others lives or extend it. Tired by the egotistical approach of his kind to others he decided to exile himself, he promised to never participate in savage rituals to relinquish people from their humanity. Future goals: inspire a community to respect life and the end of it.
Character name: Navek Storyteller Elanvole Race: Goliath Class: Fighter Backstory: If there is any truth to old Navek's ever romanticized stories, the goliath has lived a long and storied life. Though born to a nomadic people, he was later captured and sold off to be a gladiator at a coliseum, earned back his freedom, joined a mercenary band to build back both a reputation and stolen honor, wound up a bandit before long, captured again by a noble angered by the bands antics, conscripted into a King's army, and eventually reached a position where he could retire. Or so he said was intent when his past crimes were finally overlooked due to services rendered. Whether any of this is true or not, Navek eagerly offers his services to the town upon hearing news of Blood Scales escalating trouble making; especially after learning any rumors about a former brother in arms presence in the band. THEN, he can properly semi-retire in town. Future goals: Whip into shape select locals into a proper adventuring band, pass on his knowledge, and then either retire peacefully... or die a properly honorable death in battle.
Jorag began life as a typical forest gnome. He enjoyed life in the tiny village, until one day when he was 33 he accidentally started a fire with magic. This was a rare talent in his village and the villagers had learned that people with this talent would lost control and cause trouble. When one was found, he was sent away to a nearby wizard's tower to learn control. Jorag sadly made his way. There the kindly old wizard, himself a former villager trained him in the ways of all magic. Helping him get control. He enjoyed learning, but missed his family and the wide open spaces of his home. When the wizard felt he was ready Jorag was disappointed to learn he wasn't going home. "Go on an adventure first boy, see the world. If it helps think of it as learning about the world to help your village. You may return when you are done." Jorag was crestfallen, but wanted to help his people set off to see the world.
Future goal: To learn whatever he needs to, to be able to go home.
Backstory: During the Last War, Root was just another nameless Warforged soldier. It was programmed as an elite scout, traversing stealthily through the wilderness to gain valuable intel on the enemy. During these missions, Root grew to love the beauty and tranquility it experienced within nature. These experiences created a spiritual-like bond between Root and the natural elements. Once the Treaty of Thornehold was signed, Root decided to leave civilization to travel the wilds and live a peaceful life amongst the plants and animals of the world .
Due to its programming as a scout, Root has an excellent memory for terrain and is very skilled at drawing maps; although it has no need for them, it enjoys documenting the areas its traveled and will often give them to lost travelers it meets. However, due to the extended periods of time on its own, these brief interactions with others tend to be quick and slightly awkward. Root had been living in the forest outside of Black Oak Village for a few weeks and had begun to hear stories about the plague of the Blood Scale gang. Although Root feels more in-tuned with nature than with humanity, it feels the pull of its original function to help protect the weak an innocent.
Future Goals: Travel the world and document the vast expansion of uncharted territories
Character name: Kail Character level - 1 Race - Kalashtar Class - monk/Paladin Backstory - Kail grew up without a father. His mother was a Paladin of Torm and he was raised in a household with lawful good tendencies. Kail went his own path when he decided to join a nearby monastery who helped him discover his inner self. Opening his mind introduced the communication of the quori spirit of Maya (Meaning "Might") and this is when the night visions began. Often, Kail would have reoccurring visions which left him restless- The most common one showed him fighting an unseen force in a fiery hell. Two additional arms sprout from his back and runes glow all over his body with divine light. The teachers at the monastery worked with scholars from the Paladin order, along with Kail's mother to uncover Kail's true Kalashtar heritage. The quori chose Kail's mother as the vessel for his birth. Guided by the faith of his quori spirit, Kail now adventures out with the teachings of his monastery and the Torm order to spread good over the world, determined to be the light and strength for those in need. A calmer of nerves. A beacon for the lost. A hero.
Future goal - Kail's immediate goal is to help the villagers of Black Oak overcome their troubles. He was tasked this mission as part of his initiation into the holy order of being a Paladin.
Haephil Menengue was born and raised in the city of brass on the elemental plane of fire, her elven mother a slave to her efreeti father, but this was quite common on the plane of fire. As her fathers' first born, no expense was spared on the one who was an extension of his own legacy, the best education, the best training, and near impossible expectations. By the time she was thirteen, she was raiding by her fathers side, hunting fearsome beasts, and carving her own reputation as a purveyor of secrets. The last, she became quite fond of, blackmail and espionage suited her perfectly, but upon turning down her fathers invitation to go on a raid, he became infuriated. Imprisoned for three days in a cage above a lava floe, her father sat before her, contemplating an apt punishment. On the fourth day, he gave a short laugh, clapped, sprung to his feet and strode off, back within an hour, he had a scroll in his hand. "Haephil, my successor, you have forgotten what it means to be Efreeti, but I know what will remind you. You are to go to the plane of mortals and pursue this bounty, for a criminal leader with a vast force, bring me his head and you're exile will be expunged. You will go, alone." and with that, her father knocked loose the chain that held the cage aloft, but instead of magma, she fell upon the road outside of Black Oak, the cage gone.
goals: got to black oak, find the mayor, find the bandits, kill the bandits, take bandit leaders head, go back to fire plane, and shove it up her fathers ass.
Character name: Sayre Nygaard Character level - 1 Race - Tiefling Class - Ranger Backstory - Sayre is part of a nomadic band of various race folk who are healers, tinkers, craftsmen, and traders. The band, Tuuletar, welcomed by most who they meet are famous for their healing and curiosities created by Sayre's parents. Her mother and father, Astrid (variant human) and Madds Nygaard (tiefling), lead the band. The Tuuletar move when the North wind blows spreading their gifts to heal and exceptionally rare wares throughout the land. Sayre, now in her late teens, has left the nomadic lifestyle of her family to seek out her own path. She found Black Oak Village on her travels and discovered the village's troubles wishing to remain to help the people. Future goal - Sayre really wishes to make a name for herself and her own fortune possibly finding somewhere to set down roots, unlike her family who will remain nomadic but her home will become a home base.
I had him for a campaign that died before starting and will level him down to fit. Just wanted to show him.
Character name: Kol Whitewave Character level - 1 Race - Human Class - Barbarian Backstory - Life isn't easy, especially for the Wild folks. They will always survive, no matter what must be done. So Kol followed his father's footsteps and his father's footsteps by becoming a man of the sea. Unlike them, he was drawn into a satisfying life of piracy. His brute strength and keen eye, helped his crew become a constant nuisance to the traders and merchants. His Captain was always careful of him fearing when he grew in strength, but Kol cared nothing for the position. After a while he bidded his Capitan and ship goodbye after feeling the crews feeling becoming something troubling and dangerous, he took his knowledge and left to find the next chapter of his life. Future goal - Kol has no set goal, but he has thought about making a new branch of his tribe. Eventually when he is stable he will seek as many wife's (Not limited to human or females. All will be his if it helps) as he can to strengthen his home and help ensure its survival.
I plan to make my decision Sunday afternoon with the hope of starting the campaign on Monday. All Characters will need to either use standard array or pointbuy for stats and this will be an XP based campaign, rewarding anything from killing monsters, solving problems, finding hidden treasure, great roleplaying, etc... If you have not linked a character sheet please do so. Also, for starting equipment... Please just use the starting equipment from your class and background. It will not take long to make additional money and you will have the ability to buy items regularly so you can customize your loadout in game pretty quickly. Thank you all so much for your interest. I am still planning on picking 3 or 4 players but MIGHT MAYBE move to 5 depending on the applicants. Thanks again!
Character level - 1 Race - Goliath Class - Bard Backstory - Outlander: Mo can't remember his tribe. He's lived in woods, whole life. Mo play big banger. Mo like living with other people now. Too long just Mo. Mo likes those little beardy ones the best. Future goal - Mo is a good helper. You got problem? Mo fix it for you. Mo is wondering where his tribe is, but for now Mo is having fun with this new tribe.
Hey Fallenbov, it looks like your character abilities might be a little beefier than just standard array or pointbuy. I could be wrong though... I was just looking through some of the characters and noticed his stats were pretty intense.
Character name: August Fullclaw and Jirs Race: Water Genasi (for mechanical effects; idea is that August is human and Jirs is some sort of water spirit). Class: Paladin Backstory: August Fullclaw was originally a sailor for hire on the trade ship known as Nessus. On a standard trade mission, the crew was attacked by a sahuagin raiding party. The crew was able to drive them off, but the time it took prevented them from being able to escape a storm. During the storm, August was thrown overboard, and he lost sight of the ship as he sank beneath the waves. He awoke on an island, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with a strange water spirit sitting on his chest. The water spirit introduced itself as Jirs, and declared that it had saved August from the Great Leviathan (whether or not this is true, August doesn't know). In exchange, Jirs wanted to be taken back to its home- but it refuses to divulge the location of its home to August. He suspects it's forgotten where its home is, but doesn't bring it up. Jirs helps August fight in battle with magic (albeit weak magic), since he's its only chance of returning home at this moment. August is a long way from home, and right now, he's just trying to make some money to continue travelling. He tries not to stay too long in one town, since he develops attachments relatively quickly. Future goal: To return Jirs to its home, though August is starting to develop an attachment to it. August also wants to know what happened to Nessus and if his crew survived, but he's not entirely sure where he is at the moment.

Hey Fallenbov, it looks like your character abilities might be a little beefier than just standard array or pointbuy. I could be wrong though... I was just looking through some of the characters and noticed his stats were pretty intense.
Oh probably a issue with reverting them to level 1. I will redo, and point buy to fix any issues
Should be good now.
Character name: August Fullclaw and Jirs
Race: Water Genasi (for mechanical effects; idea is that August is human and Jirs is some sort of water spirit).
Class: Paladin
Backstory: August Fullclaw was originally a sailor for hire on the trade ship known as Nessus.
