My step son has been working on a campaign for years. He’s been perfecting it. His friends finally convinced him to do it. He’s been into D&D since he was probably 9. His dad did a campaign with him years ago. My question is is there anything I can do to surprise him beforehand, other than snacks/drinks, that will help them have a good time or make it extra special? I only have a couple of weeks.
It's cool that you are supporting his interest AND supplying SNACKOS!
For fun, you could --
Make a finger food / baked good and give it a name which is important in his built world history. "Your spice cakes of Karmona have been delivered, Sire."
For more fun, slap on some elf ears and have your own fun dressing up as a fantasy figure... baker / esteemed advisor and snacko delivery minion / serving wench :p
OR... mage, wizard, sorceress (that makes enchanted goodies!) or... dare we broach it... QUEEN of the realm the game will be played in. As QUEEN you can give the royal decree for start and stop times, munchie breaks, and 'house rules'... so it does not turn into a mosh pit of doom.
Have fun with it.... and kudos for being 'the cool parents'!
