Greetings, adventurer! For some crazy reason, I’ve decided it’s time to put on my big boy pants and DM my first campaign. Just call me a glutton for punishment. After perusing the options and getting some sage advice from DMs with years of experience, I’ve resolved to get my feet wet with Lost Mines of Phandelver. I’m hoping there are a few of you PbP players who haven’t done it yet (or at least very much of it).
Please note: If you’re an unforgiving player who has extremely high expectations for their DMs to always know all the rules and never make mistakes, this isn’t the campaign for you. You can click your browser’s back button now. I’m sure to get things wrong at times. But know that my goal throughout will be to help you have fun.
I’m a big fan of character relationships and character development, so I’m hoping this campaign will involve just as much interpersonal interaction as fighting and treasure hunting. I’m a storyteller at heart, and together, I know we can craft a really good tale.
A little bit about the characters I want to guide through the story (to help you decide if you’re interested):
All characters will be dwarves. You will be able to choose which subrace/lineage. Magic classes are highly discouraged (including ranger). However, if you are asked to make a character, and in the course of creating your character, you can make a case for choosing a magic-using class, I’ll be glad to hear your argument.
Stats will be generated in one of three ways (you’ll make your choice and stick with the result):
Point buy;
Rolling (reroll 1s once) with the option of adjusting scores up/down equally (for example, if you have a 13 and an 8, you can raise the 13 to 14 if you lower the 8 to 7) as much as you like; or
Rolling three sets of ability scores (never rerolling 1s), raising all the odd numbers to the next even number, choosing the set you like the best, and then using the scores in the order they were rolled (for example, rolling three sets, one of which is 7 12 16 13 10 9, raising that set to 8 12 16 14 10 10, then assigning them in that order to STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS and CHA).
If you are chosen to create a character, you will need to answer these questions about your character:
Where was the character born?
Who are their parents? Are the parents/family still alive?
What was your character doing before their adventuring life? (Some of this will be provided by your DM.)
What will your character leave behind?
What does your character want (motivations)?
As well as these descriptors:
Physical description:
Mannerisms:
World view:
Pain points:
Desires:
Fears and phobias:
Know that if you are invited, I will most likely help you develop your character by asking questions and making suggestions. I will probably challenge you to work a little harder to make your character more complex than a lot of PbP DMs. I’m not going to be content with a one- or two-paragraph background. My goal is to make you so invested in your character that you want them to succeed — whatever that might mean.
If you are interested in participating and are OK with the imposed restrictions (and the fact that you’re going to be my guinea pig), let me know below. (You shouldn’t create or even suggest a character; simply say you’re interested.) What I’ll do is check out your past posts to see what kind of player you are: how well you can craft a sentence, how much of a storyteller you are, how often you contribute to the campaigns you have participated in/are participating in, and how cooperative of a player you are. What I’m trying to avoid are players who lose interest and disappear, those who have such atrocious writing skills (or habits) that their posts are difficult to understand, those who hold up their campaigns because they only check the forums every other day, and those who are so headstrong (and full of themselves) that they aren’t team players (in campaigns that are supposed to be cooperative). If you’d like to address any of these (concerns), you can send me a PM.
As you reply, I’ll be checking you out. Once I find four to six players I feel comfortable playing with, I’ll post a note to close this thread, contact the players I’ve picked, and together begin the process of falling in love with your brand-new adventuring dwarves. (I have no idea how long the selection process will take, but I hope it won't take more than a week.)
I'm interested, but unfortunately, I've never posted on this site (just joined today), so I won't have any info on what kind of player I am. I can send you writing samples if you like (I have a ton of fantasy stories I can send excerpts of), but for everything else...I just have to give you my word? ^^;
Also, just a heads-up, I'm pretty much new to DnD. I've DM'd a couple games with my seven-year-old sister, but we always discarded the rules and made up our own whenever things got too confusing. Just want to give you as much info as I can since, again, I have basically no info or other posts on here ._.
Interested, can form complete sentences, and up for being a guinea pig for ya. Thank you for stepping up to DM a game! Also...if no magic...how would we heal after combat? Inquiring minds want to know.
I am interested in both playing the Lost Mines of Phandelver and being a guinea pig for a new DM. I am in only one campaign at the moment, and my group is just waiting for our DM to post. I am an experienced player and DM, but I do my best to not power game and be a rules lawyer; and would also be willing to answer any questions you might have, even if not chosen to participate in this campaign. I can honestly say that I have not played through any of the official modules for D&D but have played in a number of homebrew stories. I will also say that I having the restrictions on character creation invites a fun and unique experience for that process.
Thank you for your consideration and good luck to you as a DM.

Be excellent to each other, and roll for initiative dudes!
I love roleplaying and character relationships, creating interesting character concepts and backstories that mesh well. I am in a couple of games right now, but unfortunately live in Australia so timing can be difficult. The only experience I have with the lost mines is a small part I played in which I was a barbarian. Again, unfortunately, the DM had to leave before we got to the first town. I am a big believer in D&D being a team game and not creating characters that are loners or create problems for the party. Thanks for reading/listening!
I am interested in this campaign, unfortunately, I haven't posted to this forum yet. I am fairly new to DnD and I am looking forward to learning the specifics. I have general knowledge of the mechanics and I have played in some campaigns on discord. I could also provide writing samples of some of my character's backgrounds if you would like. If you have any more questions or require some more information about me, please feel free to send me a PM.

I'm very interested. PbPs are an easy way for me to roleplay characters, but I'd like to take it up to the next level. I've never played LMoP, nor have I ever played a dwarf, so this is going to be entirely new to me. If you have any questions beyond what you can find out about me by digging through all the PbPs I've been in, please feel free to send me a PM.
I'm interested in this. I'm a pretty experienced player and a very new DM. I'm very into creating very detailed character backgrounds and love roleplaying. I can post regularly. I'd love being a guinea pig for a new DM, and I won't make a big fuss if you mess up a little with the rules(I do it all the time!). I have no experience with the lost mines, and am eager to make this my first!

I’m very interested in this idea! I’ve also got a lot of experience on here and RPing in general. I’ll go ahead and let you know up front that I’ve joined my share of games that I ended up dropping from. The issue of time has been a factor before, but the leading cause has always been a mismatch of interests and/or style. It’s not a big deal, and it’s bound to be an issue for everyone at some point or another. I hope that’s not the case here though! I hope to hear from you!
Greetings! I'd like to throw in my two cents and express my interest in the idea as well. Now before I go into detail you mentioned you'd go through our older posts to understand our qualities as players. Unfortunately I only made this account a few days ago, but I can link an older DnD play-by-post was in using the Maze of the Blue Medusa module ( Note: I'll be under the name ZigZagaroo and my character at the time was a Kobold rogue. My entries start on page three and sorry to say there was a point where I was unresponsive until page 12 ).
( Aside from all that it's a great read on it's own merit if you have the time. It was a fun and interesting campaign with a great DM while it lasted ).
I've been carrying on as a DnD player for about three years now. Even before I started playing I've always had a vast enjoyment of character development and role playing, and discovering the game helped me apply those interests into a broader medium where I can collaborate with friends. It's a fun pass time of mine to write up character back stories, however I would say a weakness of mine is often putting an over abundance of thought into planning each specific aspect of the character. In the context of preparations for a game, this overthinking can often delay the time it would take to submit a character in time. Fortunately I find consistent communication with the DM and the other players help me decide on a character that rounds out the dynamic of the party.
Sounds like an interesting campaign, especially the all dwarf party... definitely a challenge that and no magic classes! I'd like to throw my hat in the ring... I have a concept idea for a character I would like to try and run past you...

Lt. Orileo the Guinea pig reporting for duty sir! I am most interested; especially given the spin most other games do not take.

Nice! I am definitely interested, but I am relatively new to DnD and my campaign has not yet started.
I'm completely fine with being a guinea pig, and I am also willing to flesh out a character.
hey kids do you like violence? wanna see me shove nine inch nails through each one of my eyelids?
