This is my first attempt at DMing PbP. I enjoy writing stories and campaigns, and I wanted to bring one to the forum. The rules, play style, race, class etc. will follow 5th edition. The setting of this story/campaign will begin in non other than... EARTH. You will have the same continents, oceans, political turmoil as IRL.
The story is caster-focused, but I do not want to limit players to only playing spell casters, so I do encourage you to multiclass if you want to. Or if you truly are set on not playing a character that has no casting ability, let me know and maybe we can find a way for it to make sense... I'm sure we can work it out. However, you will realize why I say this when I write the synopsis below. You dont have to be caster focused but having magical casting abilities will fall in line with the setting of the campaign.
If you are interested in joining my campaign please PM/DM me with an overview of your character. I want to keep the party to no more than 5 or 6 as to not be overwhelmed and to not overwhelm you, the players.
Prologue
This adventure is meant to be played by 4-6 players.
The world is blatantly normal on the surface, but there is another side to the world that is only known to a select population. This side of the world is full of magic, mythical creatures, gods, demigods, demons, devils, cults and monsters and as a result - curses, blessings... in short magic.
The “normal” world is based off of the real world with its continents, oceans, nations and political turmoil.
To this point you have lived a normal human life in NYC, unaware of the multitude of races that exist beyond the norm. One day as you go about your daily routine, you find an envelope with your name written on the front in fancy calligraphy. You open the envelope and as you begin reading "Congratulations, you have been invited to take an entrance exam for Naedonia Academy of the Arcane, this invitation will guide you and grant you entrance to our grounds"
(You will tell me how it has led you.. be as creative as you like.. did the letter fly away from you as if a gust of wind ripped it from your hands and you chased it down to the school grounds? Did it teleport you? This process is unique to each student, maybe your parents are alumni and you were already aware of the school's existence. Completely up to you, my side of the story is bare bones... you and I will provide the flavor as we move along!)
You arrive to a campus that unless you were told by someone who knew about it already.. you had no idea existed, it doesn't seem special or magical.. for all intents and purposes it just looks like a very nice school campus.
(If you chose a race other than human) However, as soon as you walk onto the campus your true race is now revealed, you are surprised to see that you are not human. (react to this surprise as you see fit for your character)
(The school will teach you how to be a wizard, sorcerer, warlock, paladin, fighter etc. Unless you want to provide a backstory as to how you have come about these basic skills already)
A human student is waiting for you when you arrive to lead you to the auditorium.
Here is where our story begins!!!
Update:
We currently have a full party. However, as is the nature for PbP, I anticipate that some players may begin to drop out over the course of the campaign. Therefore PM me if interested in joining the party and you will be added to the campaign if and when a spot opens up. First come first serve!
If you follow the show "The Magicians" this campaign is heavily inspired from that show. It is one of my favorite shows because it has one or two direct references to DnD. The beginning of this campaign is almost completely ripped from the show as I thought it would serve as an interesting beginning and as a different approach to PC development than I have seen in the past. PCs get a mysterious invitation, followed by an entrance exam, followed by a formal welcome to those who pass. The hook, plot and everything else from the point on will differ from the show, but the inspiration of the show will be felt through out the campaign.
Also, the pace we will be operating on will be relaxed.... I will check the forum periodically through the day to keep things moving. I do not expect people to be constantly posting throughout the day, I am extremely accommodating to all person's IRL obligations.
Cool idea, seems kind of harry potter inspired. what level will players be starting at?
For story-line purposes.. We'll be starting at level-1. But you will progress through the first couple of levels rather quickly via "cut-scene". Essentially saying as you've attended and progressed through the school's classes you will have grown in skill and experience. Levels will be handled using the Milestone format.
You can expect to be at least level 3 when things start to get rolling.
How will you want us to handle ability scores, equipment, starting gold/dollars?
Ability scores, I'll leave up to you. Starting gold, everyone will start with 50gp, we'll call it a stipend that the school provides you. Equipment, just know what it would be as if you were to start in the usual way with your class. Basic starting equipment will eventually be provided to you by the school according to your class.
So by up to us I am guessing that you mean we pick from point buy, standard array, or roll. Do you have any particular rules for rolling ability scores (e.g. roll 4d6, reroll 1's once, and add the highest 3).
So by up to us I am guessing that you mean we pick from point buy, standard array, or roll. Do you have any particular rules for rolling ability scores (e.g. roll 4d6, reroll 1's once, and add the highest 3).
If you choose to roll stats:
I'm okay with you re-rolling your lowest score in an effort to keep everyone near the standard.
The school is a university - so dont worry about fitting into an age range
YOU choose the race... the powers that be (maybe you'll meet them at some point!) have made it so everyone appears human and normal, unaware of magic. There are "safe zones" that allow this veil to be lifted. The school is located in such safe zone.
Ability scores - I dont care how you choose to handle this, but in an effort to keep everyone at around the average or above, re-roll your lowest score, take the higher of the two.
Levels will be done in the Milestone format.
Choose your starting equipment, however, you will not be in possession of the equipment until the school provides it for you. This includes arcane focuses, if your character uses one.
Technically you are starting at lvl-1 but be aware that you will progress to lvl-3 almost instantly via "cut-scene"
You should know how you got to the school, whether it's through the invitation letter leading you or if your parent(s) is/are alumni that steered you this way. (This is mainly for RP)
With that said lets start.. I think 4 players will be more than enough, any more and i think the posts can get overwhelming.
The day in NYC was grey and gloomy, the sky seemed like it was itching to let out a storm when each of you receive an envelope with nothing but your name written on the front it. Upon opening the letter you see, written by hand:
"Congratulations, you have been invited to take an entrance exam for Naedonia Academy of the Arcane, this invitation will guide you and grant you entrance to our grounds"
Depending on your current location, the invitation guides you to the school ground in a certain way. (The specifics as to how you arrive to the school will be your story to tell when you want to)
You step onto the campus as if you just stepped through a different world. There was nothing, and now there's campus in front of you. The veil has been lifted from your eyes and you see a multitude of different creatures walking around the campus. (Dwarves, Elves, Halflings, etc.)
Some of you, may even see that you yourselves are not human.
(Feel free to RP this event. I am waiting for a couple players to send their character info.)
Ceasar, previously with his family in Romania, had been told before hand what was to be expected by his parents, who, according to them, had once been students here. Regardless, the feeling of walking through a tree to cross an entire ocean was a new one, and left his chest with a feeling of exhilaration and weightlessness, as he breathed in the air from another continent for the first time. His card was still in hand, but the tree had reformed itself shut and he was left to look in awe and wonder at the new sights before him. Elves, Dwarves, etc. all creatures he had read about and studied in his family's books, but was never sure he'd meet....it almost made him want to pinch himself.
Dressed in his family's colors of black and red, his coat passed just below his waist, with a bag slung over his shoulder, carrying the most basic of things (spare clothes, some food, etc.) His black hair is styled to the side, just over his forest green eyes and fair skin. Standing at 6ft tall, Ceasar S. Dracula is relatively tall for a human, but also has a decent build to him, simply making him look bigger than other humans.
Isabel sighed as she bit into the hotdog she purchased recently while walking around in Central Park, the place that had served as her home for much of her life as she ran away from various foster parents preferring the streets over the often lousy domineering 'caregivers'. Unfortunately for her her lifestyle often meant missed homework assignments and very rare chances to participate in anything and thus she was looking towards a life of likely petty crimes and eventual long term incarceration...or worse considering her gender. As she bites down once more she recoils from the sensation of non-hotdog in her hotdog. Looking down in confusion she sees what appears to be an envelope with honest to god wax sealing it.
Looking around to see if someone had somehow snuck this in her food she sees no one...which only gives her the creeps. Starting to walk faster she looks at the letter...which has her name on it...and wonders at the fact it doesn't have any ketchup or mustard on it. Finding a spot with some visible people she sits and opens the letter, sighing when powder doesn't launch at her, and read the simple and fancy script on it before raising an eyebrow. Just as she was going to verbally voice her confusion her world becomes enveloped in darkness before suddenly she is not in central park anymore. Any who had caught a glimpse of her moments before would have seen her seem to turn into shadow before fading away into nothing.
Looking around she can't help but squint her eyes as the brightness of the area hurts them which leads her to taking a few seconds longer than normal to notice that everyone seemed to be cosplaying some fantasy thing. Unsure of what is going on she looks for someone who looks like they are in charge and raises her hand at them while calling out, "excu..." The words die in her mouth as she catches sight of her now black skin...and not african american black but black black...like midnight black...
Asher flies into NYC from California. As they wander around the city taking in its many sights. He could see the Statue of Liberty from the train. Empire State Building was in the distance. He walked past the Nintendo store and 30 Rocafeller square.
Asher notes all the differences between San Francisco and New York.
As he finds the school and approaches. He notices his skin becoming light colored and yellowish. There were indents and patterns now on his skin. In his mouth was perhaps the weirdest feeling his tongue shifted and pulled like someone pulling on putty or gum. His nose shrank and squished.
His normal reclusiveness and thirst for knowledge grew. He could feel his nature changing slightly. His thirst for knowledge was now driven by the need for power. And his introverted nature now felt more like a mixture of selfishness and survival.
To Ash he became a weird snake person. To the magic world they would see a Yaun-Ti Pureblood.

Gash- Lvl14 Goblin Wizard - The High Court of the Aasimar Queen
Tellier was having a wonderful time. He had arrived, a few weeks ago, to New York University, his dream school. On this day, even the dour weather couldn't dampen his mood. As he walked to the bus stop in the morning, he was accosted by another student—presumably—bearing a small stack of quarter cards. "Hi, could I interest you in-"
Gently pushing away the student's hand, he replies,"Ah, sorry. I really have to get to class!" before continuing on his way.
As he continued walking, several other students tried to hand him small flyers, but he turned them all down. Was the way to the bus stop always this long? I don't remember it being so far...
Another student tried to intercept him, "Hi, could I interest you in-"
"Sorry, I really have to-agh!" He was interrupted as he turned, bumping into another student who, oddly enough, seemed to be wearing the same thing as the one that just tried to hand him a flyer. Now that he thought about it, all of the students he ran into today were wearing the same outfit, and they all had similar, nearly identical faces.
"I'm so sorry, I really have to catch the bu-"
"Hi, could I intere-"
Something's not right here, what is going on?
He broke away in full sprint towards the bus stop, now in view. As he finally got aboard and took his seat, he watched out the back window as the bus pulled away. The two students were nowhere to be seen, but as he turned back away from the window, they were on either side of him. As he looked up, towards the rest of the bus, every single seat was filled by an identical copy of that student. As Tellier looked around, alarmed, he tried to get up as he saw his stop approaching. When the bus continued to hurtle past it without slowing, he called out, alarmed, "B-b-bus driver! You missed my stoooooooo-whoaaah!"
Suddenly, the bus came to a rough stop, and the doors opened. The other passengers, all the same student, got up and started pushing him towards the door, "Wait wait wait! This isn't where I'm supposed to be!"
Despite his protests, Tellier was roughly thrown off the bus onto the front steps of a strange campus, one which matched no college he had ever visited or knew of in the area. What is this place? I should probably call someone...
As he reached into his pocket for his phone, Tellier pulled out, instead, a small letter."Congratulations, you have been invited to take an entrance exam for Naedonia Academy of the Arcane, this invitation will guide you and grant you entrance to our grounds"
What on Earth is this?
He felt an urge to scratch his arm, but looked down, startled, as he was met with hard scales instead of normal flesh. He stared in shock for a few moments, before... What the hell?
A student approaches the confused and bewildered party. The student is a human of average build with short dark wavy hair "Well, you guys are sure cutting it close. I'm sorry but there isn't much time for me to explain everything your seeing and feeling at this moment, but rest assured, as long as you pass the entrance exam everything will be explained to you. Come now, we must hurry if you're going to be able to sit for the exam, the dean wont allow you to take the exam if you arrive late!"
The student leads you through the campus, into Merlin Hall and in an auditorium.
The Dean addresses the party:
"Well, you guys just made it. Take your seats please"You see a student nervously raise their hand "All your questions will be answered, in time. For now open the test booklet, you have 3 hours to complete the exam. When you're done bring the exam to the front and return to your seats. You may begin."
Roll Arcana or Insight check - your choice!
Feel free to RP the walk to the auditorium if you'd like as well!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tellier walks silently, not daring to speak up but stealing glances at the other students and himself when he thinks that they're not looking.
An exam? It's barely been a week... Wait, what am I even doing here? I should be trying to get back to campus! What is this place? What am I supposed to do here? What even am I?
With that last thought, he looks down to study his scaly, bronze skin. He takes his seat in the auditorium, nervously, and begins the exam, still questioning his being there.
