As people of the North, you are no strangers to giant incursions. Frost giants have long claimed the Spine of the World as their demesne, and hill giants are known to scrounge for food in the untamed hills. But now, in the past couple of months, giants of every kind have emerged from their strongholds in force to threaten civilization as never before — and not just frost giants and hill giants, but also stone giants, fire giants, and cloud giants. All of the giants are in an uproar. Reports of giant attacks throughout the North have reached the coastal cities of Luskan, Neverwinter, and Waterdeep, stoking fears that the giants are waging war against humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk.

In recent weeks, your travels, curiosity and the promise of adventure have brought you all to the great city of Waterdeep, where you have been reveling in the magnificence of the City of Splendors, and enjoying some much needed rest, as well as adequate helpings of civilized food and drink after your time in the wilderness.
One evening, inside one of the taverns in the Adventurers District, you heard rumors of goblins terrorizing the small settlement of Nightstone, which lies in the hills, not too far away from Watedeep. Although you have never been there, it’s common knowledge among travelers that The Nightstone Inn is renowned for its food and cozy guest rooms, and that the dwarf innkeeper, Morak Ur’gray, has a fondness for adventurers and a nose for lucrative adventuring opportunities.
In addition, it is said that the High Steward of Nightstone, Lady Velrosa Nandar, is apparently a Waterdhavian noble, and is reportedly offering a reward to anyone willing and able to deal with the goblin threat.
Thats more than enough information to spark your curiosity and sense of adventure. It seems like a good opportunity to lend your aid, or at least test you mettle as an aspiring adventurer, and maybe earn some coin in the process.
The next morning, you all found yourselves gathered in the common room of the inn as the only 5 people either brave enough, or not too hungover to answer the call. So, you decide to band together and make the journey to Nightstone as a group.
At this point, you’ve been traveling along the High Road for most of the day. As evening approaches, you spot a wooden signpost next to a trail that heads north into the hills. Nailed to the post are three arrow-shaped signs. The two marked “Waterdeep” and “Daggerford” follow the High Road but point in opposite directions. The third, marked “Nightstone,” beckons you to follow the trail. If memory serves, Nightstone is roughly ten miles up the trail.
((Ok, we’re officially underway! Feel free to describe your characters and get to know each other a little bit as 5 strangers who now find yourself banded together.))
Arisa: A beautiful, slightly built human girl in her young 20's, she wears a suit of blued scale mail and carries a worn leather backpack, a quarterstaff, and a shield emblazoned with a blue 8-point star in a circle. She has fair skin, brown hair and green eyes, and the look of someone who spent most of their time reading, not wearing armor. Over her armor she has a weathered blue hooded traveling cloak and she wears brown leather boots. At one of the tavern tables, she has been taking notes on a scroll using a black quill pen and a vial of ink. She smiles nervously at you.
Finally, in a soft voice with perfect articulation, she says, "Hello, I am Arisa. I am pleased to meet you all." and smiles again nervously, like she is trying out that greeting for the first time (and hoping she got it right)
During the journey, you learn that she's from the Misty Forest near Daggerford, and while she's read a lot, she has not traveled much at all, Waterdeep was her first journey to a city. Despite her nervousness, she seems excited to experience adventure.
Aided by a bleached bone walking stick; Osmord walks slow and deliberately at the rear of the party. Head slightly bowed, his rheumy black eyes watch you all with studied care. His flesh and shell are a patchwork of muddy green and brown, mottled here and there with dirt and dried swamp weed. Osmord squints toward the setting sun and grimaces as you all come to a halt near the road sign. Using prestidigitation he raises a chill breeze that creeps before him carrying the faint stench of rotting flesh. With the aid of his walking stick he slowly makes his way toward the sign to see what all the fuss is about.
"A sign shows the way...Surely we follow the sign? Nightstone awaits us." his speech is slow and considered.
As he stands there looking up at the sign he reaches into his shell and pulls out what looks and smells like a dead rat. He cocks his head to one side and casually bites into the tasty snack.
Arisa looks at her notes in the dimming light. With her soft voice she speaks aloud:
"We will not be able to make it there tonight, we need to find a place to rest. I think it is another long walk from here. If there's no inn, barn, or house close we might need to camp along the trail to Nightstone, maybe we will find a suitable place soon, off the High Road a bit."
She thinks about what she's read about this part of the high road and Nightstone.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Belkas walked at the back of the group, observing them as they traveled. He was a tall Half-Elf, standing just under six feet of stature, thin, with dark brown hair and a beard. He wore black leather armor of a strange make under his cape, its design reminiscent of spiders and webs. He held a spear in one hand and carried a well-worn backpack.
Their meeting in the tavern in Waterdeep had been pleasant enough. He had entered last just as Arisa had introduced herself. In her bearing, he had found none of the mocking superiority or cruelty he usually associated with humans. In fact, she had looked like she wanted to flee from them all. He could commiserate.
He had never seen or heard of the tortoise people before. Still, he appreciated the usefulness of carrying your own armor, and Osmord gave the impression he would be calming influence on the group. In a fight, standing behind the wizard was looking like an excellent place to stand.
Vernon was interesting, small while evidently being a capable warrior, carrying a lance while having no mount. Balkas wondered what type of mount would carry the gnome. If they could get their hands on a dragon wyrmling, now that would be something to see.
Zyllith seemed welcoming, and from the way the tiefling moved, he knew she was nimble - not just quick like he was, she was almost unnatural. If he had any money, he would watch his purse around her.
Without realizing it, his hand slid over to the ancient silver coin sewn into his cloak. He stumbled as he heard screams ring out in his head. He jerked his hand away and continued walking, his face somber.
The party stopped, and Arisa recommended they look for a place to pass the night. Belkas said, "That sounds good to me. If there is nowhere close to stay, I can look for some shelter off the road. Does anyone want to help me look?"
FYI, right now, it's about two hours before sunset. At your current pace, it would take about three more hours to reach the village, two hours at a fast pace, but that would lessen your ability to remain as alert. Either way, if you keep moving, you'd reach Nightstone after dark. If you choose to stop for the night, the open, gently rolling terrain along the trail offers plenty of suitable spots for camping.
Arisa
From your reading, you do know a little bit about Nightstone. It's is a fortified settlement located a few miles south of the Ardeep Forest, and the name comes from a massive chunk of obsidian that sits in the middle of the village square. The village is often a popular retreat for wealthy nobles who wish to hunt in the Ardeep Forest, and for this reason, adventurers can earn good money by offering their services as guards on a hunt. There are no settlements along the ten mile stretch of trail between the High Road and Nightstone, just rolling, open ground.
Vernon clinked along at the front of the group, holding his lance high, with its green banner catching the wind whenever it gusted.
He appreciated having traveling partners now. Most travelers on the road to Waterdeep had either stayed away because of the noise of his armor, or because of his obsession with cheese, or because they were going the other way. These fine fellows had not turned in disgust at the aroma of his cheese, nor at his tales of Deepingdale machinery. Admittedly, he wasn't sure how much anyone understood of it, but listening to someone you just met on a topic you didn't know was already a good sign, no need to push for genuine interest just yet.
When he heard there was a Goblin problem and quality food (and nobody here who would admit to recognizing his cheese), he immediately signed up to go.
Now at the sign post, he stopped to wait for the others. At Belkas's suggestion, he looked around for shelter. "I may not have the best vantage, but it can't hurt to look."
Zyllith had introduced herself to the others back at Waterdeep with a wide grin and a mirthful attitude, " 'allo lovies, aren't you lot a grad clutch te' greet. Can't wait far the adventures that follow." Her accent - like the rest of her - was foreign, as cheerful and carefree as her demeanor. Unlike some, she clearly had a great deal of experience introducing herself to others, for better or worse. The Tiefling had long, pitch black hair, with occasional braids flowing freely behind her shoulders, contrasted with vibrant red skin that shown through freely where ever her leather armor allowed. Like colored horns pulled back from her forehead before curving upwards, accenting her exotic facial features rather then distracting from. But most of all her eyes shone like brilliant orbs of liquid gold, making it easy to miss where she was looking at if you weren't paying attention.
It didn't take long during the trek to the north for the rest of the group to notice she was even faster with her hands and feet then she was with her tongue. Her armor and gear were also well worn from her many travels, though she had not yet revealed much about where she traveled from beyond "a small town far to the southeast".
As the group reached the sign and the split path it pointed to, she simply tilted her head slightly as she looked about thoughtfully. "Not ta put a dampa' on yer hope if those feet are tired 'n all, but I figure we can keep moving and make the town with no hassle. Than we kin settle down in a lovely bed, opposing tha' hard ground we're on now. 'course this all assumes tha' goblin troubles don't find us as we're walking inta town."
The crunching sounds combined with Arisa's face drew her attention towards Osmord as he was midway through his unusual snack. Showing some of the same shock but mixed in with a larger portion of curiosity she speaks up towards the tortle, "Oi, is that a common treat for ya lot up here? Figured better ta atleast roast a bite first.
( She will assist anyone making survival checks as they search the area. )
Osmord considers your words and peers down at what is left of the rodent.
”Fire burns away rot, ruins the taste for Osmord. Cold and wet is best.” He gives a firm nod and swallows the last of it in a single gulp. He shuffles forward then and taps the sign twice with his white bone walking stick.
”Tiefling is correct, just a short walk is required... and then we may rest.”
Arisa says-“I agree, Ormond and Zyllith- as I recall There’s no lodgings between here and there, and a bed in a fortified settlement is better than the hard ground in the open. If we press on, we can make it late tonight.”
Arisa has been walking near Vernon at the front of the group and listening intently to his tales, she knows little of gnomes but some about cheese. It is apparent she has some skills with herbalism, so much of what she knows is related to that. (Flavorings and etc). She is also fascinated by his Deepingdale stories.
Belkas walked along with the party towards Nightstone, watching the sun lower towards the rolling hills surrounding them. After hearing the comment on goblins, he kept an eye open for any possible threat.
Finding himself beside Zyllith, he said, "I haven't heard your accent before. Where are you from in the southwest? If you don't mind me asking."
Zyllith's face is a mix of concern and fascination as she watches the tortle finish his apparently rotten snack, "Ay, good on ye than, whatever smacks ya tongue, roight?"
Later as the group continued their travels Zyllith kept to the back half of the group looking about carefully for dangers that would tend to creep up as the sun went down. It was then that Belkas, walking beside her, began to ask about her home.
"Eh? Whot you wanna know 'bout tha turdbucket for anyway? I come from no where important. Promise ye nothin' nearly as interesting in tha' place compared to whot we got here, savvy." the tiefling then turned her head with a charming smile towards the half-elf, "Whot about you than? Come from some-spot interesting? If thar's a story to tell in yer history I'd love ta hear it."
Now that they were off the High Road and more concerned about ambushes, Vernon switched his lance to his back and pulled out his shield. He buffed away the light film of road dust accumulating on the fiery hammer emblazoned on it, leaving the green field alone so that it might not be too reflective. He stayed out in front, but made sure not to get far from the rest of the party, so he could listen for a bit.
Arisa also grows more cautious as darkness falls, paying close attention to the surroundings, and not speaking, following Vernon near the front of the group. (If and when needed, she will light her hooded lantern and keep the hood down to enable her to see well enough to follow the others without attracting much attention. She has a small hook on her shield for carrying it. If the moon/starlight is bright enough to make her way, she will not use the lantern)
"Turdbucket?" Belkas' mouth turned up in a smile. "Now you mention it Zyllith, I think that is the perfect word to describe where I came from as well."
He motioned with his hand, and darkness flowed out from under his sleeves to take the form of a perfect miniature farmhold sitting on his palm.
"And it is best left far behind." He blew at the image and dissolved away. "Here's to more interesting places and more pleasant company."
"Aye, sounds like ye got in mind exactly whot I come from. There's a reason I left tha' borin life behind me. Much more fun an' interesting places before us." Zyllith let's her golden eyes linger on the illusionary farmland before turning her gaze back to the road, always best to keep an eye out for danger when traveling the roads this late. After a brief moment she tilted her head and continued the conversation in another branch, "Ye' got some fancy magiks in ya, luv. Would ye take offence at my askin' ye where ya learn'd those mysterious tricks of yers?"
The half-elf looked away for a moment. “After leaving the farm, I found myself in a downward spiral of increasingly difficult circumstances. A friend helped me get away from it all, and she...” he paused for a moment, “... she taught me a couple of tricks to take care of myself. She is...” he stopped. “I owe everything to her. She saved my life and so much more.”
Belkas shook his head, smiled, and glancing around said, "On to other topics, any thoughts on dealing with goblins?"
Osmord considers your question Belkas, slowly he extends his claws and calls forth a skeletal hand that floats above his own. Green necrotic energy flickers around the ghostly image as he edges the chill touch spell.
"We kill the goblins, and then we eat the goblins... you may cook yours first."
And with that he snaps shut his fist and the magic fades.
Arisa seems a bit disturbed by the talk of eating goblins, but again shortly regains her composure. “I’ve not known goblins myself, but the histories are full of the troubles they cause for peaceful people. I have no qualms about killing them if necessary, but I will eat other things. She smiles at Osmord. “I am pleased to be in the company of practitioners of magic, truly I feel lucky to have found you all.”
