This is my first time DMing and I took over a game that fizzled out in the first encounter. We just lost a player so are recruiting a new one. We are about to finish chapter two, so our new player can come in at level 3. At the moment we have in the party:
A human monk (me)
A human fighter (going Eldritch Knight)
A changling warlock
An aasimar bard
If you would like to join the campaign, we are looking for someone that will join in a partnership with the other characters owning a dilapidated tavern (Trollskull Manor) that is presently haunted. You may choose a faction, but know that we have 2 Gray Hands, 1 unaffiliated, and 1 that may or may not be affiliated with the Harpers. You may take on any faction, but a Harper would be helpful for me as a DM. The Zhentarim faction is probably not going to fit well with the party but you can propose how it will fit with these mainly good aligned characters. We will use Milestones for leveling up.
Rules and Things
We'll leave homebrew at the door for this game, official content only. Our alignments tend toward good, but so long as you can play well with the group without being a continuous pain in the ass for the rest of the party, then I am open other alignment possibilities. For the sake of expedience, your characters does not know the rest, but introductions will happen in game (and possibly in consultation with me in PM). For backgrounds it's really helpful if you have ties to Waterdeep, but is by no means a necessity.
Joining the group as a co-owner of Trollskull Manor is tricky. You have several options you can propose that I have thought of and maybe you have something creative that I haven't. Your faction may want to buy in to have an agent as a part of this group that has gained a little notoriety. You may be independently wealthy and have the 400 gp necessary to buy in. Maybe you are a relative of one of the characters or of the departing gnome wizard. Please include your thoughts on how you will insert your character into the story when you post!
Getting Started
There are some things I need from you before we get started. You can post them in the thread here and then I'll pick the adventurers to be accepted. We'll be doing point buy for ability scores, and once we get to 2nd level we'll talk about HP. Take the regular starting equipment. If you want to give me additional character details, you're welcome to PM me.
Provide the following: Character Name: Race: Alignment: Class: Faction: Your motivation for joining the group: Backstory (an actual backstory, as in, more than just "Folk Hero"):Link to DnD Beyond Character Sheet
Final note
We are posting roughly once a day across many different time zones. And, as I said before, this is my first time at this! I just ask that you have a little patience with me. If you are new, I will give you the same. If you are experienced, I may pick your brain once in a while. Also, I do have a character in the party, since that is how I started on the campaign, but I aim to let the other players drive the decisions.
The characters posted below were from a previous recruitment phase. Scroll down to the red text to begin the current recruitment posts. I expect to leave this open for recruiting until late on Friday. Thanks!
lived in elven castle that was destroyed by giants. Mother's last actions were to give him her spell book and tell him to find the mentor in the woods. The mentor taught him to cast spells and off. At waterdeep to study the beyonder, Xanathar.
Character Name: Vrakvroth Esstyrlynn Race: Dragonborn Alignment: Lawful Good Class: Paladin Why you are in the Yawning Portal: Vrak is in Waterdeep on business of his order, the Talons of Justice. He is staying at the Yawning Portal after completing that business.
Backstory (an actual backstory, as in, more than just "Folk Hero"):
Vrakvroth Esstyrlynn stood before the elders and took the oath of devotion. Swearing to the Ptarian Code, Vrak swore to uphold the virtues of the order, to be pure of heart and deed, help each other and protect the "lesser races", and would strive to convert their foes instead of killing them. Violence was used only as a last resort. When it was finished he knelt and Azhaq, leader of the Talons of Justice, put the amulet of Bahamut around his neck. Azhaq spoke "Rise Paladin Vrakvroth Esstyrlynn and welcome to full membership in the order." When he was 15 Vrak had entered into training with the Talons of Justice. His father's standing in the clan had gained him entry. His own strength of character has kept him there. The training was tough, nothing less for the Dragonborn and for Balumet. Within a few years it was obvious where his path within the order lay. His strength of character and determination found him with the paladins, training and learning. His devotion to good made him a model student and his devotion to his studies allowed him to excel. Martial training, studies and classes made him an able warrior. Now at 25 he had finished his training. The oath of devotion made he was ready to do as the order willed. He was ready to face evil and destroy it.
Thanks for the offer, Perzival. This module takes characters from level 1 to level 5, so a 6th level will definitely outclass everything in the adventure.
Character Name: Terrance Fimbulvinter Race: Hill Dwarf Alignment: Lawful Good Class: Cleric Why you are in the Yawning Portal: Terrance was just planning to pass through and has stopped off for a drink. He had been summoned to a temple of Thor to the north but has recently finished his service there. He is heading south to Baldur's Gate but is looking for some new act of devotion towards his god, a chance to join some intrepid adventurers may be just what Thor wants him to do. Backstory: As a child Terrance was raised as a devout follower of Bane, the Black Hand, upon reaching adulthood and finally come to terms with what was being preached to him, he turned his back on his family and the dark god. Seeking enlightenment he travelled to the four corners of the land praying to anything and everything in hope of finding a being he found worthy of his devotion. He encountered a paladin of Thor, the devotion of this paladin was clear so Terrance followed him to learn of this god. What finally tipped him into the worship of Thor was the discovery that Thor's followers didn't merely recant words but actually acted upon the righteous values they extolled. Since then Terrance has prayed to Thor and is now seeking to show his worth to the divine being.

Character Name: Dmitrei Brightshield Race: Human (variant) Alignment: Chaotic Good Class: Cleric (trickery) Why you are in the Yawning Portal: Dmitrei visits the Yawning Portal almost daily to bless those entering the pit and to offer aid to those returning from it. He also loves to celebrate life, so even if no adventurers require his attention, he is always up for a party. Backstory (an actual backstory, as in, more than just "Folk Hero"): See his sheet for more details, but, basically, Dmitrei grew up the son of one of Waterdeep's lower nobles. But he wasn't happy with that life. In the last few years, he discovered the teachings of Tymora and jumped in with both feet, leaving his life as a courtier behind, and moving into the Tower of Luck to become a cleric. Character Name: Mal Dulinn Race: Aasimar Alignment: Chaotic Good Class: Bard Why you are in the Yawning Portal (and backstory): Mal is a drifter, plying the casual-but-oh-so-necessary trade of sharing music and stories wherever chance brings him. If asked of the whereabouts of his origin, his most frequent response is to glance up for a few moments as if considering, and then to gesture vaguely towards the nearest large highway. A locally known figure and vagrant, Mal is generally treated with familiar respect, earning his keep as he finds a way. He has, most recently, thanks in no small part to the inscrutable vagaries of chance, been enjoying the fruits of some previous fortune, a few gold coins to be spent in evenings at the Yawning Portal, listening for once to the tales of far off coming and goings, of adventures in dark and frozen halls, and of the sweet reward of everlasting fame.
I love all of these characters. I'll sweat over the decision for a little bit, probably have to roll a die to decide, and then PM whomever I land on with an invite. Expect that soon! Thanks everyone for your interest.
Please re-read the OP as I have edited it with the current state of the game. Submissions after this post will be considered for the middle of Dragon Heist (starting at level 3). There is a good chance we will move on the Dungeons of the Mad Mage if the group plays well together.
Character Name: Balin the Grim Race: Dwarf (Mountain) Alignment: LG Class: Cleric (Forge) Faction: Order of the Gauntlet (Weak ties) Your motivation for joining the group: Looking for a good tavern to peddle my handcrafted ales and spirits. I've amassed a small sum through adventuring Backstory (an actual backstory, as in, more than just "Folk Hero"): Framed for a crime he did not commit, Balin is an outcast from his home. He has been trying to fill his time just fighting the good fight against evil in the world but he has grown weary of the struggle. He has come to Waterdeep to settle in someplace. Character Name: Titus Vorenus Race: Dragonborn (Brass) Alignment: Lawful Neutral Class: Paladin (Oath of the Crown) Faction: Lord's Alliance Your motivation for joining the group: Titus was away on campaign with his legion to the north of the city for several years, fighting off barbarians and other horrors in the unforgiving wilds. Now that his legion has returned victorious he has some considerable time off and a hefty bonus in his pocket. Weary from years of campaigning and war, he hopes to spend some time away from the guard and go into business for himself. Though he's only been back in town for a few weeks he heard of the exploits of the party, and now he hopes that by buying into the tavern he can invest his money wisely and still keep some excitement in his life now that he is relieved from his soldierly duties.
Backstory: Soldier - Titus comes from a proud family of Dragonborn who have served on the Waterdeep City guard for generations. Raised in a strict military tradition, Titus Vorenus has the utmost respect for honor and the rule of law. He served with distinction in the guard, was named first shield, and won glory for being first man into the breach at the battle of Trebia. He carries himself like a noble patrician, but has still maintained his connection to the ordinary soldiers he serves with. His services in the legions have given him a severe demeanor, and he has little tolerance for those who waste his time. His big bronze frame bears scars from the battles he survived, including an notable one along his face. He was well liked and respected by those who served with him and though he is ultimately good matured, he has served the state unquestioningly, and has carried out harsh punishments in her name.
Character Name: Shel'lok Race: Half-elf Alignment: Lawful Good Class: Rogue (inquisitive) Faction: Harpers Your motivation for joining the group: Shel'lok has served the city of waterdeep sometimes as an advisor of the City Watch in order to solve some crimes. He has a keen mind and uses to see things that others don't. His logical approach to things had given him some renown as eccentric but reliable source to the City Watch and it wasn't too far ntil the Harpers reached him to enlist him among their ranks. He gladly accepted. Now it seems that a group of individuals had obtained ownership of an, apparently, haunted inn and the Harpers wuold like to have someone among them to monitor them. It also happens that Shel'lok knows ( if the other player agrees ) one of them, for he/she had problems with the guard before but Shel'lok proved that he/she was innocent.
Backstory:
City Watch / Investigator
Feature: Watcher’s Eye
Your experience in enforcing the law, and dealing with lawbreakers, gives you a feel for local laws and criminals. You can easily find the local outpost of the watch or a similar organization, and just as easily pick out the dens of criminal activity in a community, although you’re more likely to be welcome in the former locations rather than the latter.
