As the title says, I'm starting a D&D campaign. All players are welcome, and I'll explain everything for newer players. The expectation is that players post once or twice a day at least.
Use the four core classes (Wizard, Rogue, Cleric or Fighter), and the four core races (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Halfling). You can use any background.
We're using a homebrew setting, starting in the coastal town of Stormhaven. Across the sea is a powerful Halfling Empire, and pirates frequent the area, sinking their ships.
If you want to join, just make a character on D&D Beyond and share it here along with a short backstory. If you need more info on the campaign, just text here.
EDIT: Forgot to mention this. We're using standard array and starting at level 1.
I’d love to play! My character is Erika, and she is a rogue elf criminal looking for something taken from her by a noble. She’ll get to her eventually, but she needs to find her first. So she’s traveled to Stormhaven to look for information.
My character is Filli Goldenfield, a halfling cleric who’s father is a wealthy and influential merchant in Stormhaven. She has taken to helping out those in need around town for her family never wanted for money and she is more than a little embarrassed by the status that such wealth has afforded them. She has become well liked for the way she does not look down on those less affluent than her, which is more than can be said of her brothers and sisters.
Hi! I'm really interested in joining! My character is Dara, and she is an elf wizard who has set out to search for her long lost twin sister. I'm still thinking more about the little details regarding this, but she has spent over 20 years looking for her sister, and she started to learn magic to see if this would help her locate the mysterious disappearance of her sister from her homeland one fateful night. As a remembrance of her sister who aspired to be a wizard, she believed that becoming a wizard would lead her to answers.
Awesome. I'll post more info when I get home, when I'll be free. As to ThatOneGuyYouKnow's question, the campaign will be mainly seafaring, fighting / helping pirates, and dealing with the ever expanding Conquista Empire. I'll put more setting info when I get home.
Mugs was raised in a small coastal town north of Stormhaven. Her parents wretchedly poor earned just enough to get by, or sometimes less as fishers and carpenters. Her future was likely to follow in their footsteps until a retired travelling enchanter decided to buy some property in the coastal village to live out the rest of his twilight years.
Taking pity in their squalid living conditions the enchanter started giving small jobs to Mug's father, fixing a leaky roof, trimming the hedges, etc. She would come along to help where she could having nothing better to do on the hot summer afternoons.
The old enchanter took a liking to her lively nature and so while her dad worked he began tutoring her in various aspects of the world. After a few years the enchanter decided to take on one last apprentice. He began training her in the ways of magic. Seeing this as a way to escape her wretched future she took to the lessons quickly and studied hard.
After a few years of study however the enchanter's time was up. Old age had finally claimed him and he was laid to rest in the village. By this point Mugs had a working understanding of magic and the world around her. Adamant to make something of herself she wished her parents goodbye and with a knapsack and an old robe departed for the large town of Stormhaven.
General Setting Information: The game takes place in the world of Eceron. The Great Sea splits two continents apart, with the civilized east and the barbaric west. In the east are great empires, such as Polaris, Valencia, and Conquista (more about them later). They have recently discovered the western continent, and have begun settling the area. Some cities, like Stormhaven and Darkport were founded by settlers who left the east for personal reasons, and not for the spreading of great empires. Because of this, both of these cities are unaligned with any nation. The characters will all begin the game in Stormhaven, one of the free towns of the west. In this age of the world, guns are used (use the stats for crossbows, bolts represent ammunition), and large sailing ships and warships can be found, outfitted with cannons.
The Eastern Empires: There are many empires in the east, but the three most important are Polaris, Valencia, and Conquista. Polaris is an empire founded on militaristic ideals. They ever seek to expand their borders and rule larger swaths of land. Polaris is ruled by the High Elves. Wood Elves are considered to be lower in ranking in the Polarian culture, and Dark Elves are the worst of the worst, and live as slaves, mining deep into the earth. Polaris hasn't began sending colonizers west, but many elves, of all social classes, have gone west, helping to found Stormhaven. Valencia is a small empire, but one focused deeply on culture and science. The Valencians are Gnomes, who like to invent things and use magic. In Valencia is a wizard academy named Argonaust, and is the center for magical learning in all of the known world. A gnome wizard created the Clockworks, an army of mechanical soldiers to fight for Valencia in a war against Polaris. The war has ended, but the Clockwork army keeps growing, out of the control of the gnomes of Valencia. They have just recently started sending ships west. Conquista is an empire that is focused on their religion and riches. They wish to travel west and mine gold, all the while converting their followers to their faith. Conquista is a halfling empire, and they worship Garz, the Monkey God. The Conquistans were the first to send ships west, and have began spreading their ideals throughout the continent.
Important Locations: There are three main locations near Stormhaven (including the free town itself). Stormhaven is a coastal town. To its east is the Great Sea. In all other directions is a large forest. The town was founded for the timber, which is used to build ships. The militia of Stormhaven fight to keep pirates away, and at times, have to fight off Conquistans. La Fortaleza is a Conquistan fort, built on an island and heavily guarded. This fort is where they store their spices, and according to sailors, they hold even more important cargo there. Finally, Blood Shoals is a pirate cove north of Stormhaven. The Blood Shoals are the center of pirate activity.
Questions for Characters and Players (these questions are to learn more about your character. If you do not know the answer, that's ok):Erika: what was taken from the noble that you are wishing to find? Do you know (or think) that the noble in question is in Stormhaven? Filli: How do you feel about the attacks by Conquista? Do you support the idea that Stormhaven should just join Conquista and end the fighting? Dara: From where have you been learning your magic? What is your relationship with this item / person? Benagol: What is your opinion towards the pirates? Do you dislike them for their raiding, or do you envy them for their freedom? (For Player): How does Benagol have 25 Platinum and 58 Gold to start with? IIRC you should have somewhere between 10-25 gp based on your background. Mugs Legushka: (For Player): In my game, there are no Swamp Folk or Mudborn. However there are shamanistic natives (they are dwarves). You can be one of them. (For Character): How did you get the gold you have? Additionally, how/why did you join the dwarven natives?
Hey, sounds good. Should we respond here or in PM's moving forward?
Since Stormhaven is a coastal town I imagine there are probably some coastal villages not too far away as well right? I've adjusted the character intro to go more from that direction. Let me know if that works. I didn't super want to go the Dwarven shamanistic route. I've updated my character sheet accordingly. I've also adjusted my gold to make more sense and added equipment. Before I just had the 150 as the default it gives you.
LMK if you like the changes or would like me to edit a few more things.
Nice, the UA rules gave me ideas too! By the way, there are items for pistols and muskets on dndbeyond already if you wanted to use them instead of crossbow stats? Either way I like the inclusion of guns!
As for Filli, she certainly isn’t happy about the attacks as she has seen the damage caused first hand when helping the families of those who were lost or injured in the fighting. It has also cost her own family money as trade is interrupted by the attacks, or even just the threat of attacks. With regards to joining the Conquista that one is a complicated thought. A big part of her is opposed to it for they demand conversion to their faith and they exploit the lands they own(and she assumes the people too) in pursuit of riches, plus her father opposes them for he wishes Stormhaven to remain a Freeport so that he can trade with all empires freely and not be tied to any one nation. However she dearly wishes there could be an end to the violence and she has often wondered if submitting to their rule would be worth the price to try and save lives.
I have a couple of questions of my own. Firstly, can I swap my mace for a dagger? I’ve used standard starting equipment but if I could swap mace for dagger that would be nice!
Secondly, what deities are there in the world? I saw mention of the monkey god Garz. Being a cleric faith is obviously important to the character and it would be cool to know what gods a light domain cleric might be able to choose.
As for the mace for dagger swap, I'm totally ok with that. As for the pantheon...
Garz (Life, Nature, Trickery) is the god of monkeys, halflings, and nature. His symbol is a golden monkey. Argon (Knowledge, Light, Tempest) is the god of magic and spellcraft. His symbol is fireball. The Shadow Queen (War) is the goddess of death, corruption and decay. Her symbol is a black spider.
For you, as a light domain cleric, Argon (the "o" in Argon is pronounced like in the word "go") would be your god. Most in Stormhaven follow Argon, half out of defiance against the Conquistan clerics, and half out of reverance of magic.
Basiel Kilderkin was a soldier for the Conquista Empire. He served in the marines, traveling back-and-forth across the Great Sea protecting the Conquista treasure fleet. Basiel had risen to the rank of sergeant (?) by the time he was discharged from service. He is conflicted about his past, and the ideals he believes in. He has lived as a lawful, responsible member of Conquista society, but has moral issues with the Empire's activity on the western continent: Basiel has recently begun to believe much of the activities are vices of Conquista society, spreading greed and graft throughout the government and institutions of the Conquista Empire. Rather than return to his home in the east, Basiel stayed in Stormhaven. He makes a living as a guard, protecting whoever pays him well enough - as long as the work is legal.
I switched out Chainmail for Scale Mail as starting equipment. Is that ok?
Cool, thanks for the swap and the info. I've renamed my light crossbow to a musket based on what you said also, unless you wanted to use the existing firearms instead? (in case you see it and wonder!)
Regardless looking forward to getting started later on :)
Benagol is not contrary to the pirates: they know what they want , they like to travel, they want to get rich. Of course being a soldier or a privateer is almost the same but at the least are not wanted to be taken in prison

May I join? I was thinking about a human (variant) fighter, background sialor or fisherman, it seems to fit the setting.
His name is Benagol: he grew up close to Stormhaven and , if not for the army levy, he would surely become a rascal or worst.
For the time being his job is dangerous but enough to get by, but the real aim is for new paths, an adventure and get rich trying.
Anyway, startin level and how do you want us to build it: rolling stats or what?

Hey, thanks for joining!
We're starting at level 1, standard array. I'll edit my first post to add that in. Once we get 3 players, we'll begin the game.
