Hey all. Planning to DM a short (but much longer than a one-shot) to medium length campaign. Looking for 4-5 active players who can post once per day. The campaign takes place in "Not Earth" where we have mostly the same technology as we do in real life but with a few "Contrivium" (Materials that do convenient shit like being really hard and light or being a super awesome power-source) thrown in. And of course, we have superheroes and supervillains running around butting heads with each other, complete with stage names like "The Calculator" Or "Sci Guy". For more info see spoilers below:
PLOT:
Let me begin by saying that this has neither DC or Marvel characters in it. All characters are made for this world though there are some guys who are obviously knock-offs of DC/Marvel Characters.
The campaign begins about a year or so after a massive epic-level threat was stopped. How bad was the threat? Apocalyptic levels of bad. Anyway, heroes and villains who are generally enemies teamed up to stop the bigger threat and succeeded. But then, the villains were beaten up and turned in after it was all over. However, society was in shambles and while people were busy rebuilding cities that were destroyed and the ones that weren't were busy doing everything they can to help those who have had their cities destroyed, the security in jails were in a extremely terrible state and they had to focus on holding the really dangerous, top-tier criminals. This gave the low tier villains a very easy escape. They didn't even have to really hurt anyone. They just snuck out and no one had the time or the resources to hunt them down and lock them back up. Many of the lower tier heroes and villains who had teamed in the time of crisis had formed genuine connections. Some said their goodbyes and went their separate ways, vowing to get back to the status quo when things settled down. Some hero-villain teams stayed together. This happened mostly because one of them switched sides. However some pairs gave up their old life all together and settled down, starting a family and deciding to live the rest of their lives in normal anonymity. Again, repairing a broken world is not an easy feat so nobody batted an eye to what was going on among the lower tier super-humans. All eyes were mostly focused on the top-tier heroes. Aerospace's (Ironman knockoff) sudden and public resignation shortly after the threat had been dealt with also inadvertently helped to draw the attention of the world away from low-tier super-nobodies.
The PCs were present during the apocalyptic event but they are sitting firmly in the "3rd tier nobodies" list. The world around them is too busy with bigger issues to really care about their heroics or villainy. Though some form of law and order still exist and amidst all of this, if any villain is seen doing any wrong buy any hero or cop, he is going to face opposition. In truth, except for the major players, everybody is kind of weary of all this.
Character Creation:
Your character knows the others in the party. They have heard about each other for a long while even before the apocalyptic event thanks to the News and media. However, they have only worked together once and that was during the time everyone was working together. If you want your character can have a longer history of interaction with one or more of the other PCs but that is not for me to decide. Talk to the player of the other character before doing something like that.
Class: Any official class is available. This includes Blood Hunter and Artificer. Unlike normal campaigns however, your class only reflects your powers and not any form of backstory (unless of course, you want it to). So if you play a Paladin, it doesn't inherently mean that your character took a oath (though they can if you want), it just means that whatever super power is mechanically identical to the class features of the Paladin build you are playing. So in this example Bane from DC would be most similar to a DnD Barbarian purely because how his powers work, even though he doesn't act like a barbarian at all. So, flavor your super-human in whatever style you want. Knockoffs of popular characters like Superman, Batman and Spiderman are perfectly acceptable as long as their powers are mechanically covered by your class/multi-classing.
Race: This world only has humans but you can still pick any of the official races. The mechanical bonuses and racial traits would just be considered to be a part of your superpower. As far as appearance goes your character can look human or can look like the DnD race you picked. In case of the later, the non-human appearance is a side-effect of your powers. As far as aging is concerned, every race ages at the same rate of humans. This is because in this world, humans are really the only race here. The guys that look like Tieflings or Elves or goblins are mostly mutated humans.
Level: Characters start at level 3
Stats: Point buy, Standard Array or Rolling works. If you choose to roll for stats, roll here. Just like with classes, your stats have little to no bearing on how your character acts. It mostly just measures how effective their powers are.
Alignment: Heroes are Lawful. Villains are Chaotic. Everyone else (including Anti-heroes and Anti-villians) are Neutral. Good and Evil are subjective because nobody ever considers themselves as evil.
Feat: Everyone gets a free feat. Yes, that means variant humans get 2 feats total.
Name: Obviously the character must have a name. Also add in their super hero/villain name in parenthesis if they have one.
Appearance: I don't know about you but I don't find these kinds of stories fun without all the creative character designs. Regardless of whether your character has a costume or not, the appearance section must be filled out.
Backstory: The Backstory section must include they way they got their powers (even if it was by birth) and why did they decide to hero/villain/be normal.
Equipment: See next section
Equipment:
Here's where things get slightly complicated. Mechanics wise, equipment rules have remained virtually unchanged. However if you consider the purely narrative aspect, they have been completely reworked. What do I mean by this? Well... Your character gets the usual starting equipment. However, equipment comes in 3 different flavors.
1. Power Dependent: Your equipment is added to your character sheet and behaves exactly like it normally would. However, in terms of the story, your character doesn't have equipment. Their "Armor" is actual their heightened reflexes/ durability thanks to their superpowers. Their "Weapons" are part of their powers: Bludgeoning melee weapons take the form of light/medium/heavy punches (depends on the melee weapon), Slashing weapons gives you the superpowers that allow you to cut things (Sharp claws, Psychic blades, sharp hands etc.), piercing weapons give you metallic finger nails or something. Ranged weapons can take the form of energy projectiles that you can fire out of your body or something. You still need money to "buy better equipment and ammo" but in terms of narrative, this takes the form of training/research to enhance your powers.
2. Costume Dependent: Your equipment is added to your character sheet and behaves exactly like it normally would. However, in terms of the story, your super-suit is what is doing the functions of the equipment. Your costume boosts your strength/gives you sharp claws/wrist daggers etc. Your super-suit also lets you deflect and dodge attacks. You still need money to "Buy better equipment and ammo" but in terms of narrative, this takes the form of research and enhancement of your super costume
3. Actual Equipment: Your Equipment is actual equipment that you can hold, use and wear. In terms of narrative, the only change is that the names have been changed to be more fitting to the setting. Please note that should you want, you can disregard the list below and just pick regular DnD items if that's how you want your character to look. Listing the equipment names below:
Heavy Jacket - Leather Sports Gear - Padded Leather Armored Jacket - Studded Leather Skytech B1 Security Armor - Hide Fiber-Mesh Jacket - Chain Shirt Ballistic Gel Vest - Breastplate Plated Leather Jacket - Scale Mail Demiplane S1 Jagger - Spiked Armor Reinforced Body Armor - Half Plate Reinforced Armored Jacket - Ring Mail Nanosteel Vest - Chain Mail Skytech B2 Heavy Security Armor - Splint Nanosteel Assault Armor - Plate
Be sure to write (or copy-paste) the backstory and appearance here on top of linking the character sheet. This is because sometimes, I can't view those stuff.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. You also need to say which flavor of equipment you are using. Obviously, using flavor 2 requires that your character have some kind of costume or super suit.
Last question: can we choose 2 different themes? Like, spells are our powers, certain items are equipment, and armor is our suit, or no?
Your powers won't ever just be made up of equipment. Your powers include your class features, feats, racial features, and equipment should you choose flavor 1. Yes you can choose multiple themes. In the example you gave though, you leaned heavily into flavor 2 with a bit of flavor 3 added in.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Horatio Hirschfeld - Squire imbued with fae powers, in the Coliseum of Conquest (W2/L1) DM for Reavers of Harkenwold, and sometimes The Fighting Grounds of the Coliseum
Yeah, I was looking it over and decided Spells are powers anyway, no? So....
Class: Artificer (Alchemist)
Race: Human (Variant)
Name: Bubba Jones (The Maker)
Alignment: Neutral. Bubba has always been a wild card, because if he believes in something he will kill every superhero if he believed it was right, or he could save the world ten times over.
Feat: Ritual Caster (Wizard. Has Find Familiar and Unseen Servant)
Backstory: Bubba has always been the type of person who doesn’t give up. He would play cards until he lost, and fight someone till he was held back or they were unconscious. What do you expect other than that when he discovered the joy he had from making sculptures out of Wood, He would try to get better? He bought plenty of books trying to get better at his hobby, and has made money winning championships in wood carving. Yes, that’s a thing. One day, he was walking around his hometown when he saw a shop that wasn’t there before. He went in and saw the best pair of Woodcarving tools he had ever seen. He bought them and immediately got to work. The first thing he sculpted: a coin. Imagine his surprise when the coin came to life, flew around and could do things! It was incredible! The thing was magical in nature, and could enhance long forgotten genes in a creature, making the more hardy, or making them lighter. Bubba was astonished, and looked through his sculpture book, and carved a small owl. That came to life too, flying around fast. He could even view from it’s eyes! He named them Mr.Gold and Mr.Wood.
Bubba has some unnatural strength. He hasn’t noticed. It’s normal to him. He’s very skinny, but can outwrestle everyone in his weight class, which is also a lot, despite not being fat or having loads of muscles. This is because of a power lying in his genes that was activated due to the magical exposure to the tools he has.
He also learned he could use magical powers from these tools. If he traced them in the air as if he were cutting wood, they would do something! If he traced a lightning bi,t, the enemy would be shocked! If he traced a shield, it protected him! Amazing! He has a Lantern that reveals everything, a bottomless bag, and has even made himself his own powerful version of Nanosteel Armor!
Appearance: John is skinny, but much stronger than he looks. He is bald and tall, being 6’9. He has blue eyes and wears a (homemade. It shows.) Nanosteel Assault Armour, which is imbued with power making it better (+1 infusion). However, it is homemade, and only as effective as a Demiiplane S1 Jagger. He always has Mr.Gold and Mr.Wood with him. He holds a small pair of knives (woodcarver’s tools) and a Bo Staff, and has a spare Baseball Bat made of wood just in case, tucked in his suit. He sometimes uses a Lantern to reveal hidden things, and has a bottomless bag (my infusions) to home things in. He has seen a good life, however, being 46, but keeps up the appearence of looking younger.
Equipment theme: All of his things (His Armor, Lantern, Bottomless Bag) have been modified into a super+suit, which he keeps in his shed (theme 2), and his tools is just some magic equipment, which he keeps with him at all times. (3)
Will this be more on the Watchmen or the Thor: Ragnarok side of things in terms of seriousness?
I'm sorry to disappoint but I don't really know myself. I have the plot ready but I can't say what it would be like in terms of seriousness. If I have to guess it would not be super serious but not super light either. I think it would be average in terms of that with some... depressive undertones (it has some similarities to a post apocalyptic setting).
I think the closest comparison I can make would be with Teen Titans (The original animated one. NOT Teen Titans Go)
Why does your character have Nanosteel Assault Armor (Plate Mail)? You can pick a theme according to your wish but you still need to follow the class's starting equipment.
Also please refrain from having homebrew items on the character sheet.
I don’t. He’s an artificer, so he has some magic items already. I just renamed a Bag of Holding using the customized option. As for the Nanosteel armor, i’ll Go ahead and replace that with some Spiked Armor.

Since you're playing an artificer, I have no issue with the other magic items because that comes with the class. I had an issue with the plate mail because Plate mail was not included in the Artificer starting equipment.
Well, since you picked theme 2, it doesn't have to be a leather jacket as far as narrative is concerned. His armor could be Nanosteel Armor by design but it uses leather and a mesh wiring of normal steel since he can't afford the Nanosteel yet.

Since you're playing an artificer, I have no issue with the other magic items because that comes with the class. I had an issue with the plate mail because Plate mail was not included in the Artificer starting equipment.
This would rule out spike armor as well.
@Dragon: XP
Any chance I could have as spiked Armor instead, as both grant an AC of 14+ dexterity modifier (Max 2)?

Alright, doing that now. I just don’t see him in a leather Jacket, so let’s just say he’s aiming to modify it, but doesn’t have the cash. :)
