It feels surreal to be shoulder to shoulder with your childhood friends once again. Today, living out the dreams of being bold adventurers questing for glory and braving the unknown, if only your mentor, Arkalis Anzulore, was alive to witness this moment of you all marching off to your first quest. The familiar twisted tree before you is the furthest west you all have ever traveled. With the town of Canheim behind you, and the village of Werflowe awaiting your arrival ahead, your band of heroes continue on past the twisted tree which provokes a memory from your child hood.
The children seemed to be tossing a life-sized rag doll between them, but you realize quickly it to be your good friend Ehla Eramyth. The young girl's pale face stricken with tears, her dark hair covered in mud, and her cries for help quickly silenced with a violent kick to the face from the town bully, Varkas. Before young Ehla's small frame hit the mud, your group of childhood friends stepped forth shouting in unison for the bullies to stop. It was that day that Arkalis said you became heroes in the face of evil. It was the ominous tone that the Wizard took with his next breath that brought you chills, "The day when all is shrouded in darkness, you will fight a world full of evil."
I love the collaboration a group of good role-players. Writing a great story with interesting characters who face difficult challenges is what I hope to achieve. My campaigns generally consist of character focused stories, mixed with brutal battles, epic enemies, and yes, humor. I am new to these boards, but experienced in the ways of gaming and because I noticed a shortage of games to join in on, I thought it would be best to create my own. Welcome to The Eidolons of Eramyth, a campaign about an upstarting adventurer's guild ran by your childhood friend Ehla and a quest to prove you are the adventurers you all hoped to grow up to be.
Looking for 4-5 players, please submit your concepts for 1st level characters: anything core allowed and would prefer majority of the group to create characters who are similar in age (to explain how you all knew each other as children). One or two outside the age range wouldn't impact too much, perhaps you were friends of the parents and knew the children or looked after them. You all knew Arkalis Anzulore, a wizard known for his powers in divination, as well as his young apprentice, Ehla Eramyth who was the catalyst to you all becoming adventurers.
The starting point will be in the town you all grew up in, and it is there in Canheim that you will meet back with Ehla after receiving invitations to perform work for her newly formed adventurer's guild, "The Eidolons of Eramyth". Seeking out the disappearance of a fellow mage friend of Ehla, the payment of 280 gold coins seems fair enough for your experience and more than you would expect for a contract to simply investigate the whereabouts of an uncommunicative mage.
Definitely interested in this game. I was wondering about a few things.
When you say core, do you mean any races that are official or do you want us to stick to only the races in the players handbook (I can enable content sharing as well)
As far as age, were you thinking mostly around 18 years old?
When making characters, did you want us to roll for stats, or stick to point buy or standard array?
Name: Slate Ironhand Class: Fighter abilities: point buy
Backstory: Slate grew up in the town of Canheim in his fathers shadow. His father Brock was an incredible blacksmith and was well known among dwarves for the quality of his armor and weapons. Slate spent countless hours studying his fathers craft and working to some day live up to the expectations of his father... but so far has never been able to meet them. In his free time he would relax and get into mischief with his friends, always the first one to accept a dare or stand up and defend a friend. Perhaps by signing up with the adventurers guild, Slate can continue to protect his friends while also maybe doing something to make his father proud.
I am very interested, the writing for the basic blurb is pretty evocative and I could always use more DnD. I'm gonna roll for attributes here real quick and then start working on my character concept after I sleep if that's cool, just about to get off shift. Let's hope for some lucky numbers...

Sad to say, I was once one of Varkas' toadies. Because of course the Tiefling is one of the bad guys, everyone expected it. And of course if I joined them, they wouldn't bully me quite so much. But I grew increasingly ashamed. They don't not bully me, just less. And why do I have to be bad? It was my ancestor that made the deal with the devil not me. That day with Ehla it finally snapped. She was always decent. I turned on Varkas and his goons and stood with the rest of you, and thank the Skalds most folks forgave me. But forgiveness wasn't quite acceptance.
I had always used humor to deflect people's mistrust of me, or to direct mockery elsewhere. But ever since Master Anzulore spoke, I have thought of performance in a more positive light. I had to travel east to college to escape my family and the disrespect all tieflings experience. Bards are more accepting than most, so I took up the study of playing and singing and healing and lore. With Elha's call I am willing to give up the protective bubble of the college. I am ready to set out to earn my virtue name - Redemption.
Backstory: Mixum grew up in Canheim and was the Upgood's family headache. The Upgoods were fine artisan craftsman that worked with finely made glass. Mixum was always distracted with trying things his own way or trying to improve the traditional methods. The Upgoods were not pleased. He managed to find his way with the help of the wizard, Arkalis, but he never stopped trying to improve things and this followed him along his path as an artificer.
Great responses so far, and being new to the boards I can tell I missed a few details but live and learn they say. I'd like to go with the standard array, keep things on a level playing field at the start so to speak. I'm also a fan as it creates a drawback to one stat and makes you fit into more specific roles outside of just your class (unless modified with racial bonuses) Standard array - 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
The classes and races posted so far look good, If those interested so far wouldn't mind editing their stats to match the point buy, and know that around 18-25 would be ideal for your starting ages (except for the Mixum Upgood the Gnome, your backstory fits into the story line to have befriended the kids).
So to be clear, because the character sheet allows the use of point buy or standard array and you mentioned both. Are we using the standard array with the set stats or point buy :D It sounds like stadard array but I wanna be sure :D

Nyaris grew up in an insular community of elves near the town of Canheim. Her father was a scholar who frequently consulted with Arkalis on matters arcane and historical. When Arkalis visited, he would bring Ehla and the children would be expected to entertain themselves while the adults did whatever they did. Nyaris was a naturally introverted and shy child who was more comfortable within herself and in the woods than in the company of others, but the effervescent Ehla became one of the few beings she thought of as "friend" despite the fact Ehla was a couple of years older and human.
The bullying incident happened while Nyaris was spending the night with Ehla. They were in Canheim for the spring Rebirth Festival. Nyaris was uncomfortable in the crowds and needed a moment to herself. Telling Ehla that she needed a privy break, Nyaris left her snacking on a cake they had bought from a vendor. Upon Nyaris's return from the privy, she saw the attack on Ehla. Angry at her friends treatment, she didn't hesitate to charge into the group, despite being outnumbered. Thankfully, others that were friendly to Ehla were also present and helped turn the tide. After that incident, Nyaris came to know Mixum, Redemption, Slate, and other better.

Am interested in trying the Revised Ranger they put out. Would that be a problem?
Name: Reese Race: Human (variant) Class: Sorcerer (Shadow Magic)
Reese basically grew up a street kid in Canheim, usually getting into some kind of trouble with the law. His father owned one of the local taverns so there was no shortage of opportunity for trouble. While Reese may have been considered one of the local "bad eggs" he focused his energies on mostly harmless pranks and petty crime. This brought him into the sphere of Varkas more than once but he never had any interest in being one of the dolt's yes men.
It was while Reese and a friend were rigging up some sort of prank to pull on Varkas that the attack on Ehla happened. He didn't personally know the girl but the sight of her being tossed around like that made his stomach turn. He left his friend to finish the prank and went to see if he could help end it. This is when he got to know the rest better and of course, Arkalis.
Reese took to the idea of being mentored by this wizard with enthusiasm, in part he was selfishly thinking he could find some new trick to use. Very quickly though he found he liked Ehla and the rest of the group so mostly started to forget his initial motivation. However, it was during one night when he and another were exploring the wizard's home that he impulsively messed with an artifact that had piqued his curiosity several days before.
This artifact was infused with Shadowfell energies and in the process, Reese exposed himself to a large amount which infused him, changing him forever. Naturally he was scolded but there was nothing that could be done so under the guideance of Arkalis he began to explore the new abilities he had stumbled upon.
Since then, a couple things have changed about him that some may find unsettling. He blinks maybe once a week and when injured, even badly, be barely bleeds.
Delilah Thorne is a young human Fighter with the Magical Initiate feat. She'll later go down the Eldritch Knight path.
The 6th branch of the noble Thorne family, headed by patriarch Damien and matriarch Alexandra, was entrusted to watch over the settlement of Canheim about a decade ago. Their relative success has allowed the family, and the town, to live in prosperity despite their small sizes. It was decided that whichever of their three daughers - Vasha, Maria, and Delilah - would marry first would become the rightful heir to the town after their parents' passing.
The prospective heiress Delilah was not interested in marrying off to a man. She was far more interested in training under Arkalis alongside Ehla and practicing with the blade under her private instructor, Turian. Delilah used the portions of her family's wealth that she was given access to help Ehla form this new adventurer's guild, and gladly offered her services as a warrior to the endeavor as well, despite having limited real combat experience at best. She enjoyed the idea of adventure outside the town - away from her family, and closer to Ehla, whom she secretly crushes on.
She doesn't care about most people very much on the whole, tending to see herself as superior by default, reasoning that the gods gave her noble birth as a mark of her superiority. She still sees others as people, deserving of respect and sometimes aid, but she helped fund and joined the guild to get closer to her crush, with helping others being more of a side benefit in her mind.
Agile Wind was not native to this area but found himself an orphan. He was traveling nearby with his parents in their wanderlust when they were waylaid by an orc band. Left alone, small and young, he was found by Arkalis and sent to foster parents. Always getting into trouble he found interest in other people's baubles and things. Not to keep just to look at them, handle them. He was master of the childhood game of hide and seek. He hid best and always found the others.
Lancel was born into service to the gods. His parents both served the small temple in Canheim. His father was a local priest helping to serve the community in faith and help those in needs. His mother helped in the temple with cleaning, and helping feed and mend those who came to the temple for aid. Lancel grew up in the teachings of Ilmater, learning that to sacrifice oneself and help others was the greatest sign of one's faith and commitment to the gods. With his teachings at the temple, Lancel would lend a hand around town as often as he could. While helping the local blacksmith, whose apprentice had badly burned himself, he found an enjoyment and hobby in working with metal. He would spend free time learning to shape metal and build arms and armor. It was during one particular day, while playing outside of the forge with a large hammer, that an event happened that would change his life.
"Lancel stopped mid-swing, thinking to himself that he heard a cry for help. He thought he recognized the voice as his friend Ehla. Setting the hammer down, he walked slowly away from the forge, when he heard the cry a second time. Not to let someone in need go without help, he ran towards the cries. He arrived to witness Varkas and others pushing and shoving Ehla in the mud. 'Hey' shouted Lancel, 'stop that'. But just as he did, Varkas landed a kick to Ehla's face. A fury, never before felt in Lancel, surged up within him. And he realized at that same moment, he wasn't alone, for other friends had joined him to face these bullies and rescue their friend Ehla."
From that day forward, he dedicated his life to becoming a Cleric, not just to help and heal those in need, but to defend the weak and rid the world of evil.
Edited second post in this thread to reflect the final cast. Nothing wrong with Reese or Agile Wind, just felt this balanced the party out well. Keep in mind I'm new to the boards, so if you learned of a more streamlined way to post out-of-character talk (perhaps through private messaging?) then feel free to drop me a line. I also found from the poll that I did that most players prefer 3-4 updates a week, so this will be my standard for the group. I don't see any reason why I can't make 3-4 or more posts in a week, and since we have a full cast now (6 heroes!) the initial post should give each of you a chance to shine a spotlight onto your character. I expect that introductory adventure post to occur sometime later tonight once I've thought on it more.
Looking forward to getting started. I'm also new to PBP on these forums and pretty new to the D&D Beyond portal. I've been mostly a F2F player and DM (for a long time).
Don't know how much the others in the group have done PBP, so I'm asking everyone:
I read the PBP faq but not all of the replies to the post. I see and understand the markup tags. But what about other conventions or norms? Should dialog or narrative elements be separate posts from mechanics posts? Are out of character posts allow and if so, is there an indicator to use?
