Our adventure begins in the year 1791 PR (Present Reckoning) on the 1st day of Eleint (September) in the snug village of Cragglefrock.
Nestled in the plains east of the Neverwinter Wood, Cragglefrock is defined by the imposing geographical features it's adjacent to. The Crags form a rocky chain of mountains and broken hills to the north west and south west. The mysterious Neverwinter Wood form a barrier about a dozen miles to the east and house the looming Mount Hotenow, an ancient volcano long dormant. The headwaters of the southern tributary of Neverwinter River begins a few miles to the south of the village and provide much needed irrigation for the rocky plains.
Cragglefrock itself is primarily populated by humans. A half dozen families of dwarves and halflings also reside there in addition to a small collection of Moon Elves, a handful of half orcs and few citizens of less common races. This diverse collection of people make up the 200 plus citizens in the village. Residents of Cragglefrock are mostly tolerant of other racial groups as long as the individual proves to be trustworthy and good natured. The village itself is relatively young, compared to the other ancient cities along the Sword Coast, including Neverwinter, and are preparing to celebrate their 100th year this winter.
Cragglefrock’s main export is copper mined from the southern Crags. These are then processed at the town refinery, which is owned by the Loderr family of dwarves. The Loderrs are the largest employer in the village and employ dozens of workers to live and mine in the southern Crags during the temperate months. The ore is then brought to the village to be refined into copper ingots.
Farms, orchards and livestock ranches scattered around the plains to the west also support the village's economy and supply much of its food stores.
During the cold months the miners return to Cragglefrock to be with their families or find temporary work until mining season starts. Many of the miners will stay in a 40 bed flop house run by Lady Seraphina Waddlefeet.
Our adventurers Tae and Heec have been residing at the flophouse for the past nine months with a few other wayward souls not able to afford better accommodations. Tae and Heec have been supporting themselves with the gold gained from their years adventuring and doing odd jobs while traveling Western Faerun, although the Loderr family will quickly, and incessantly, remind them that a good mining job is available next spring.
On this particular morning our adventures have been slow to rouse and are currently dicking around in the flop house. What are you doing?
Tae and Heec are in a few bunks from the middle of the long flop house. Currently, the room is empty except for the two elves. Sun streams through intermittent windows on one side of the building. On the other side is a wall of storage cabinets. The cabinets are fairly big and are stacked two high. You assume most of them are empty since the miners are gone and there are only a few with locks still on them (including your two). On the south side of this room are two doors which you know are for private storage of larger items. There is also an outside facing door on the wall with the windows. On the north side is a door that leads to the Lady Seraphina's office and storeroom.
Heecrid's Perception Check
You see all that is described above. Wait...what do your elf ears hear? There are footsteps approaching from the door leading to the office.
Taetormm's Perception Check:
You see all that is described above. You also see some dust motes floating against the late morning sunlight. A more sensitive soul may be reminded that we are all like dust motes floating through the great cosmic aether...but I can't tell you how you feel!
The door opens. Standing in all of her glory is the Lady Seraphina Waddlefeet. She is a middle-aged halfling woman with dark curly hair, tan skin and bedecked with jewelry from her hair covered toes to her slightly pointed ears. You aren't sure if it was oddly prescient or just a trait of the family, but she is about three feet tall and just about as wide. She levels both of you a gaze and purses her lips.
S (In deep gravelly voice i.e. Dr. Girlfriend): You two! You know you owe me two silver pieces each for last months rent. Don't think I won't sell your things to compensate for the loss.
Despite the seriousness of the accusation, her voice doesn't carry any real venom and you know she's typically endeared to her lodgers. But then again you haven't heard of anyone being behind on their payment.
My sincerest of apologies, Seraphina. I meant to pay the rent earlier but completely forgot about bringing you the money. Let me just locate my satchel. Men wear satchels too you know!
You mean purse...
... Anyway... (shuffles through his belongings) heh... I'm having some issues locating it. Tae, do you have your portion of the rent?
It's here somewhere. Can't we pay you at the end of the day? You know we're good for it.
Tae, we're going to pay her now. Get your silver and let's be done with it.
Gahhhh... (shuffles through his belongings) hmmm... I can't locate my gold either.
The two look around the room, in various locked cabinets, growing increasing worried.
Seraphina, has any one else been allowed in the rooms? We've both saved up a decent amount of money. I know I have at least 11 gold pieces. Tae, how much do you have?
More than that...
... More than that? Anyway, has anyone been in our rooms?
Seraphina crosses her arms and shakes her heads with a scowl and then can't help but smile.
You two are just funnier than a Dragon with Dermatitis, you know it?
She points to a pair of locked cabinets.
Aren't those yours? Have you checked them yet? I have the master key for the locks if you've lost yours. Although THAT will definitely be added on to this month's rent. I haven't seen anyone other than Emmett Broestone around for a few days. And we all know what's he's like, so it couldn't be him. Well it doesn't matter. I expect that money before the end of this ten day.
Sure enough, we checked there too but can't locate our respective wallets. You'll have your money by ten day's end (I have no idea what a ten day is). Emmett is a respectable man indeed. If he's still around, maybe he saw someone. Or maybe they're under our noses and we just can't see them!
Some noses are rather larger than others...
(Looks at Seraphina's large nose in embarrassment) I know my nose can sure get in the way sometimes! We'll bring the rent over as soon as we can.
Seraphina gives a final smirk and waddles off to her office, closing the door behind her. The room is quiet again for the time being. You believe Emmett should be back at any time. Some would consider the anticipation to be extreme. After a few minutes Emmett comes bounding in.
Hail and well met Drowsephus! Tae, Tae, what do you say?
Emmett is an average sized human male a little on the chubby side. His sandy, blonde hair is tussled and his generally looks unkempt. He is young and affable, though you know he often strains the nerves of many of the other villagers. The rumor is that he had a fair amount of money given to him at adulthood as his inheritance.
Well boys,
He positively beams
I did it! I bought the old house on the east side town! The Inglebrooks sold it to me for a discount if I bought it without looking at first, but it looks sturdy from the outside, so how bad could it be inside, right? Listen, it would be totally Lathanderian (God of Birth and Renewal and generally a god of good)of you to help me move my stuff. I promise I can definitely pay you if you do.
OOC: Going by the calendar of Harptos, which is a Googleable thing, each month is divided into three ten-day "weeks" making each month an even 30 days. There are extra holiday days after January, April, July, September and November to make a year 365 days and a bonus holiday every four years for a leap day.
No I haven't seen anyone here except you two for at least a couple of days. Some of my friends helped me move my things out of the storage room I was renting.
He motions to one of the doors at the end of the long room.
Everything is out in front of my house now. You should come and talk to my friends! Maybe one of them saw it when they were getting my things!
And just like that Emmett runs pell mell out of the flop house.

H: He sounds like he could use our help. We need the money and he’s a good man.
T: Correction, you need the money. I’m doing fine.
H: We both need the money seeing as you can find yours either.
T: You mean this?
*Tae plops a bag of 11 gp in various coins on the ground*
H: What?! Where did you find it?! Why didn’t you say you found it?!
T: It was locked away. I though Sera, in all her beauty, would let us slide on the rent this month.
H: We have the money. Why not just pay her?
T: We need the money for supplies while we adventure. Don’t you remember the catacombs?
*Heecrid remembers back to a time, while questing with Taetormm, that the young men were attempting to return a chalice to wealthy lord for a cave troll. The men had spend all their money on supplies for the journey but chose to purchase another flask of water over an unlit torch. What followed was a clumsy and reckless, albeit successful, attempt to retrieve the chalice. Tymora was certainly on their side that day!*
H: 11 gold is more than enough to get us enough supplies for whatever adventure finds us next. How much gold do you have?
*Tae drops a bag twice as big as Heec’s full of nothing but gold coins*
T: 90 even.
H: ...
T: ...
H: ... That’s... substantial...
T: Adventuring can prove to be quite profitable.
H: Especially when you keep it all to yourself.
T: Couldn’t agree more, Short Stack.
*Heec shoots sharpened eyes at Tae*
T: It’s a gambling term! I’m not mocking the fact that you’re short for a Wood Elf... this time...
H: We’re going to pay the rent then we’re going to help Emmett and we’re going to do that now.
*Heec and Tae gather their belongings and head to Seraphina’s office*
*They enter the office*
H: Lady Serafina! We have located this month’s rent! Two silver for you, kind lady!
*Heec hands over 2 Silver pieces from his satchel*
H: If you need nothing else from us, we’re going to assist Emmett with his new lodgings!
Seraphina looks suspiciously at the two elves but then looks down at the silver. She smiles broadly and pockets the coins.
I always knew you were good boys. Sit down, Emmett can wait for a minute. Who do you think convinced old man Inglebrook sell the place, anyway?
She eyes Taetormm and Heecrid seriously.
I need to ask a big favor of you two. I have some jewelry at the gemcutters that I left for polishing. I already paid upfront, I just need someone to pick it up. I have...been too busy to get over there. There's lots to get ready before the miners return for the season.
She looks around. Her desk is clean and everything looks neatly organized in her office.
Well, anyway, it would mean quite a lot to me. I would let you stay free for the rest of the year and make sure two bunks are saved in the winter. There's no hurry. Don't go out of your way. Tell me if it's too much of a burden. But please do it if you can.
An awkward silence hangs heavily in the air.
You boys better go help Emmett now. I have work to do.
She looks frantically around for this "work" and then quickly remembers to pull a book out from a drawer. She opens it and begins marking down something in a shorthand script. It looks like a ledger book.
Tae feels as though something is amiss with this request. Seraphina is kind but this reward seems *too* kind. Heec, willing to do anything for a friend, is oblivious to the suspicion.
T: That’s mighty generous of you. *He peers around the room* Why reward us with such a great gift if all we are to do is pick up jewelry? (Investigate the room)
I...I... It's not important. If it's too much to handle then that's fine. I have plenty of other rings to wear for the time.
More irritated
Now, shouldn't you boys be going?
Tae Investigation Check:
As you investigate the room the most striking thing you find is how neat and well organized it is. There are some shelves with books and parchments neatly stacked. There is a heavy iron chest with a hefty padlock in one corner of the room. There is a wooden crate with a blanket loosely thrown over it in another corner. The blanket is folded back from one corner and you see the tops of some sealed bottles peeking out. After she mentions the rings, you notice that every one of her thick fingers has one or more rings on them except for the finger where a wedding band would traditionally be worn. There is nothing particularly ominous or out of place in her office. Out of the dark recesses of your mind you remember a parchment tacked to another office wall that read something like "A messy desk is the sign of a sane mind", but this allegedly witty aphorism doesn't necessarily connect to anything.
She obviously doesn't want to go to the gemcutter's shop. You discern that it is for personal reasons, more likely to do with a someONE there rather than a someTHING. Although she clearly isn't telling you the full truth, you also don't get the sense that she is putting you in bodily danger by making this request.
H: This is fine, Seraphina! Everything is fine! We’ll help Emmett with his move and then we’ll head over to the gemcutters and retrieve your jewelry, right Tae?
T: Hmmmmm... so much for discussion... but that shouldn’t be a problem...
H: See?! Great! Is there anything else you need from us? If not, we’ll be on our way.

Taetormm and Heecrid leave the flop house and travel north to the road leading east out of town and into the plains. The road consists of flat stones from the Crags laid down with gravel filler in between. He scratches his head
