You have crossed the border of the Wildspace System. A misty silvery void surrounds you. Your ship shudders ominously. At first, it seems as though you're racing toward an immense island of stone suspended in the silver void. But as the island grows larger, you realise the truth. Your eye follows the lines and contours of the rock and suddenly makes out a hand floating free, an eye. Then it follows strands of hair, to a face. And finally your brain fills in the rest and the island of stone becomes the half-broken body of a dead goddess, the skin having taken on a pale-silver hue as it has ossified in the brine of the Astral Sea.
Hello Adventurers! I am recruiting 4-5 players for a Spelljammer game in preparation for the release of the new adventure, Light of Xaryxis. We begin at level 4 and should reach level 8 by the end of the adventure with the potential to continue should the group be a good fit. I am an experienced PbP DM although all of my games have been run on Discord so I am relatively new to the forums. For this game I will set up a Discord server for Out of Character chatter, questions and dice rolls using Avrae, with all in-character posts to be done on the forum. I am ideally looking for a relatively fast paced game where players help drive the story forward by providing clear action points in their posts. I always endeavor to include character backstories and enjoy building a collaborative world with the players.
To apply, you do not need to create a character yet. Simply answer the following questions either by replying to this thread or sending me a PM. 1. What is your timezone? 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? 3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? 4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. Despite what you have heard of the Astral Sea, there is definitely gravity here on this ossified corpse. Enough gravity in fact that raising the wreckage of your ship is going to be tough. A power source is what you need. But around you see nothing but the ossified curve of an enormous chin and a mouth easily 100ft across parted slightly in a mischievous, and beckoning, smile. Forever frozen. What do you do?
1. What is your timezone? Eastern Standard Time 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? I have about 3 years experience with various PBP forums. Not a newbie by any means but also not an extreme seasoned veteran. I find the biggest challenge in PBP RP is the small back and forth dialog. Often a key part of any character driven RP experience its difficult to get those moments where two character just chat and learn about each other in a PBP without it bogging down the overall story and holding up other player's posts. 3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? I'm pretty easy going and have the ability to post very quickly during weekdays. I like a steady pace in my PBP but not sure what I would consider optimal. I check many times during weekdays and once or twice on weekends (My weekends are often very action packed) 4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt:
Ardana curses in her native tongue. Head ringing from the sudden impact of the crashed ship she can't help by think this was not what she was expecting to happen. In her mind the harpoon was supposed to slay the beast and not let the beast drag them across half the cosmos and slam their ship into this ossified body. She looks up at the distant mischievous smile. It's almost as if mocking her and her reckless actions. She gives the corpse the middle finger and turns around to face the wreckage behind her. It's not in as bad a shape as she feared but the shipwrights (if any survived) would know what it needs to get going again. She notices some people already about the ship checking it and it seems she was flung a bit away from the crash site. She holds her head and feels warmth there and a wetness. She pulls her hand back and notice blood on it. She wasn't sure how long she was unconscious but the dizziness she was suddenly feeling definitely let her know she was alive at least. She stumbles her way back to the ship, dreading whatever the captain and crew are going to say to her when she shows up alive. She was a fighter and not one to flee though so she would face the consequences of her actions and try to help as best she can.
2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges?
A. I have done quite a bit of Play by Post over the years, started about 10 years ago. I think the biggest challenge is attrition and keeping the story objectives in mind. Because PBP is a longer format, sometimes comprised of thousands of posts, it can sometimes be a challenge for people to remember objectives, or to keep track in their minds over the course of months where they have been, who they have spoke with, or what they have done.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?
A. I prefer them to run at a moderate pace, I check a couple times a day, but sometime need a day or two away for personal stuff, so sometimes coming back to 100 posts can be daunting to try and catch up on.
4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. "Who are ye smilin' at cha unknown fossil" the dwarfs words were filled with spite, but mostly just because of the situation, not because he had any vendetta against this long forgotten astral creature. He climbed a bit further, his legs still a bit wobbly, he'd been aboard the ship too long drifting through nothingness, a situation he wasn't happy about returning to, even if they could. Cresting the massive face he looked about and he leveled his eyes on the ship, then circled his gaze outwards from it, trying to find some hint of civilization that sometimes settled in places like this. Spotting a glint of something due south he grinned, "Well maybe ya 'ave somethin' to smile 'bout afterall"
2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges?
I've been in one pbp game that wasn't randommly dropped by the dungeon master, and I've really enjoyed it. The main challenge I've seen is when players and the dm all want to move at different paces, and the game gets thrown off with some players posting constantly and other players never posting.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?
I like to see a couple of post from the group every day, maybe four or five. I'll be checking a couple times throughout the afternoon. On especially busy days, I'll try to make time to check at least once in the evening, but if I know that won't be possible I'll let the group know in advance. I will give a warning now that fall is the busiest time of year for me.
4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt:

"Oh, curse it all to the nine hells. We can't be dealing with another setback." Denth quickly scans the area for any movement or other sign of life. He looks back to the group. "We need to move quickly. I'll start searching for anything of use." Denth jogs up to the smile, peering inside of it. "Hey, anybody want to help me check this out?" Without waiting for a response, Denth holds up the top lip and slips inside of the giant mouth.

EST 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges?
I've played PbP on an off for well over a decade. The biggest challenge is staying engaged. Sometimes DMs don't post, players don't post, the game gets into a lull and it can be hard to recover. Keeping people moving and accountable helps a lot, while being respectful of peoples time and RL responsibilities.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?
At least once a day during weekdays. Weekends are harder. No more than twice a day most days, with the occasional bursts of more activity if everyone is able.
4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt:
Breath.Air. That is a good start. Someplace to begin, at least. The next step is rising to hands and knees and then up to standing on his own two feet in a somewhat disorienting experience as his mind and body adjust to gravity centered on a enormous corpse that has the concept of DOWN being different than it was a few moments ago back on the ship. "Well... That isn't great," he says as he looks out towards the wreckage of the ship before looking down at himself and letting out a curse as his fingers go to poke through a hole in the side of his shirt, "This was my lucky shirt! Or.. well.." another looks towards the wreckage, "maybe no so lucky.." he muses before huffing out a long sigh and turning his place to really take in the giant face that he was standing on. "Ain't this a mess..." he mutters to himself as just how difficult of a situation he has found himself in starts to dawn on him. The fear and dread of it fill him with a nervous energy though, so he does not mope or fret, but starts to move. To do something at least. There is a wince at a pain along his side that had not been there before the wreck reminds him of that sudden jolt, but he heads off with a little limp on his way towards the mouth to see if anything useful might be found.. or at the very least, to take his mind away from the prospect of being another corpse to add to the corpse.
1. What is your timezone? Pacific Standard Time 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? I have been playing PbP for over a year and the biggest challenge is pacing when players have busy lives. Waiting a week to finish a conversation or combat slows down the momentum of the game. 3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? I check multiple times a day and I would like moderated pacing. At least 3 times a week or more often. I would be fine with posting daily. Gasping for breath he shakily pulling himself up out of the wreckage. There was a ringing in his ears as he looked at the large splinters lodged within his arm. It took a moment for the pain to register as he nursed his arm. A loud creak can be heard as the ship settles on this land? "Looks like we crashed into a dead behemoth." he quickly checks on the crew and hears the news that they cannot escape the gravity without a new power source. A sinking feeling overtakes him as he looks at the barren fossilized behemoth. "Set up some lights and try to signal for help. Perhaps we will get lucky and get help from a passing ship" He waited just long enough for the ship's medic to pull out the splinters before he grabbed his gear and jumped onto the behemoth. "Our only hope is if this creature swallowed some kind of power source or if there is another wreck we can salvage" With the lives of the crew weighing on his shoulders he trudges on towards the massive mouth.
2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? I have been trying to participate since joining recently (new player). So far my hardest part is recruitment for a new player.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? I am completely open to how fast. I would be checking for new posts multiple times daily.
4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. As Nebbekaneazer struggles to catch his breath his mind flickers back to his childhood trainings. A small inner voice mutters "You will be useless if you don't calm and collect yourself". His mind begins to sharpen and adjust to the new surroundings. Again, the small inner voice attempts to focus his attention and says, "Triage yourself first and worry about the rest later". Almost instinctively he reaches for his spellbook to prepare for the required ailments. Then say's into the void "Is anyone else there, is anyone else injured".
Used to do a lot of forum adventures in the past on the old MSPAFA forums, as well as organized some homebrew settings like a Fire Emblem-based campaign. Now getting back into it with DND stuff. In terms of biggest challenge, for me it's impatience and waiting for the next post to show. If there's no active communication methods, then it's very easy for PBP to simply die if no one's paying attention enough.
I don't mind the speed of PBP games as long as it's consistent. I work from home, so I would be checking it very often.
Gasping for breath, the first thing that came to his mind was the thousands of hours of the Nebula Survival Guide being crammed into his brain during camp.
Head? Check. Neck? Check. Limbs? Still connected. Body? Aching like a mother****er, but still there and not bleed- A pause in his throat as he felt something warm and slimy, his arms rapidly swaying looking for the source.
Oh thank god, it's just eggs. I must've landed on breakfast during the crash. Just eggs...
The shores were still and silent on this lone magenta planet as he slowly plodded his way up the shore, an alien to these distant sands. He collapsed to the ground, rolling over and taking a large gulp of air. Deep breaths in, then out, each expansion of his lungs reminding him that he was somehow alive. Immediately pages and pages of survival notes and tutorials scrolled through his brain. After what seemed like forever, he finally decided to crane his neck towards what he hoped to god wasn't a wreckage of his ship. There, gleaming in the waters, miraculously fine but definitely scuffed in the crash, his Scouter ship was somehow intact.
Back into the sand he collapsed. His mind was now flipping through even more pages of the manual, as if trying to distract him from the reality that he could be forever stuck on whatever rock he crashed on. In an attempt to assuage his mind and himself, he grasped his head into a thinking position. Ok, alive is a good start. According to page 234, subsection alpha, in the event of the a crash, check on possible sources of food and water to survive, then assess the ship. If the ship is intact, then likely minor repairs can be made using the handy kit in the pilot se-WHAT IS THAT.
With a start he sat upwards and turned around, finally staring at the monolith before him. As if raised from the earth itself, a large face was staring right at him, a cold mocking visage. He slowly got up, eyes on the large face as if it would do something. He waved, as it was the proper thing to do when possibly greeting a new creature. But the face was still and its crooked smile frozen. No amount of scout training could prep him for this. By all rights he should be nothing but a panicking mess. Instead, he coolly stared at the face, taking in the mocking smile. If anything, it reminded him of how wonderfully weird and random the cosmos could be. The very things he read about as a child when he was reading his father's adventuring journals, and eventually would inspire him to join the Scout Regiment.
With a weirdly newfound sense of hope, he turned back to his ship. First, a fire. Then damage assessment. Time to get going, soldier.
1. What is your timezone? Eastern Time (GMT -5) 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? I have played in one PbP game on Discord, and found myself often waiting for others to post. I feel the biggest challenge of PbP is players regularly checking the game and posting. 3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? I expect daily progress and posts, both from the DM and players. I expect to be checking posts at least 5-10 times a day, remotely on my mobile device. 4. Please include a roleplay sample in response:
Dusting myself off, I take stock of my surroundings and return to the wreckage of my ship. I take inventory of my tools and belongings, paying particular attention to my food and water stores.
3 days. 4, if I can stretch it, then things are going to start to get uncomfortable quickly. Settling down in the pilot seat, I begin to prepare the ritual to summon my familiar. The smells of herbs, incense and charcoal help to soothe me as I stare into the bronze brazier’s flickering flames, entering a trance as I recite the spells words.
Eleet, my tricky friend, soon begins to appear in the smoke. Twinkling with green and violet motes, his bird form seems to chime like a bell as he slips into existence. Fluttering, he looks up at me expectantly. “Hello old friend. I could use a bit of help.”
Eleet as my eyes, I spend the next few hours exploring the mass I have landed upon. A Dreadnaught. I thought I recognized that grin from our training. We had seen images in class, but I never would have expected to be ON one.
At least I paid attention in class. These Dreadnaughts contain many complex bio-apparatuses to help them navigate the Astral Sea, and I aced Extraplanar Biology last semester. I bet there’s something inside that can get my ship moving again, or at least some way to call for aid.
Now, do I want to try to get in through the ear, or the nostril?
...so I am relatively new to the forums. For this game I will set up a Discord server for Out of Character chatter, questions and dice rolls using Avrae, with all in-character posts to be done on the forum.
So, you may or not be aware, all rolls can be done right here in the forum posts, and it's really quite easy to set up a PM thread for OOC "chatter" and questions. If you want to include those of us who don't use Discord (due to posting from work, etc).
Application in case you decide to let non-Discorders participate:
1. What is your timezone? EDT- US Eastern
2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges? I've been doing PbP a little over a year now, as a player and as a DM. Biggest challenges are that some players post multiple times daily and others sporadically, which can hold up the flow of the game. Every adventure I've been in has had people drop out for various reasons, you never finish with the same group you started with.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?I prefer 1-2 updates on weekdays, and less on weekends. I mainly post from work. Home life is pretty busy.
4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. Well, here we go again, Nixi the gnome thinks to herself. I knew I should've spent more on a reliable ship, instead of this crumbling hulk, held together by string and hope. She sighs. Complaining's not going to get me air or power, better get off my arse and figure this out.
The pink-haired rock gnome heads out across the landscape, trying not to think too hard about the fact that this was once a living creature, albeit a divine one. What good is it being a goddess if you just end up dead like everyboy else?she wonders. Her experienced eyes scan the terrain for signs of the crystals that provide the mystic motive force that will enable her to raise the dead, in this case, a dead ship. Not seeing anything immediately at hand, she looks toward the gaping maw, and swallows uncomfortably. Yikes! I've heard of putting your head in the lion's mouth, but this takes it to a whole new level... She sighs. But I guess getting eaten by a goddess is better than asphyxiating all alone on a barren rock. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...
And with this, she secures a climbing rope with hammer and pitons near the corner of the huge orifice, and drops down into the abyss...
2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges?
No experience yet but currently in a weekly campaign and just need more! All new to me but as others have suggested probably the wait time if other players have not updated.
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?
I would expect daily. Think will be no problem week days to check multiple times but harder to check more than once at weekends. 4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. Standing up straight and closing his closing eyes, the survivor starts taking deep breaths. In through the nose, out the mouth. Thanking his old crew for teaching him this method, he quickly adjusted to the new gravity.
Surveying the wreckage he thanks the lucky stars to his north and south-east that it was only the power he needed, though looking around it may as well be a new ship. Avoiding the creepy gigantic smile for as long as he could he finally caves and turns to it slowly. Saying out loud "Wipe that smirk off your face, not like you in any better shape!". A small hysterical laugh escapes him. Calm down, before you lose it ,he thinks before venturing cautiously over to the mouth.
Staring down into the unknown he weights up his options. To go down is madness but to stay is suicide. He declares "Bottoms up friend" before activating his boots and begins climbing down, with nothing but hope and dread wrestling in his chest for control of his rapidly beating heart.
Eastern US (North Carolina) GMT-5 2. What is your experience with Play by Post and what do you consider to be its biggest challenges?
New to PbP, but I think that the biggest challenge is the order of things.. everyone must wait for others to play and it seems one slow person slows the entire group. 3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts?
I prefer fast, I have the notifications turned on to let me know when a post got replied to, I can find a way to respond within an hour most of the time. ( except when asleep) 4. Please include a roleplay sample in response to the following prompt: You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air. "Who else made it?" That's the first thought through Flaryns mind. "Who else is here with me? Please tell me some others are still alive, especially Char." He don't know if he could go on with Her. She has become such an inspiration to his mission. He stumbles up, turns and looks at his ship, broken but fixable. He doesn't remember everything, but he knows he has to check on the others first. Flaryn checks that he still has his sword, then heads back into the ship.

I will protect those I hate. Even ... even if the one I hate most ... is ... myself.

Breath. Air.

You stumble out on to the cold stone, gasping for breath in rarified air.

Going to leave this open another 12-15 hours. Really enjoying all the roleplay samples so far!
3. How fast do you prefer PbP games to run and how often would you expect to be checking for new posts? I prefer 1-2 updates on weekdays, and less on weekends. I mainly post from work. Home life is pretty busy.

What good is it being a goddess if you just end up dead like everyboy else? she wonders.

1. What is your timezone?
Eastern US (North Carolina) GMT-5
( except when asleep)

Thanks folks! This is now closed. I will be reaching out to the selected players shortly.
Good luck to all...
Nervously awaits word...or not...oh god the anxiety! ;)
