Note: This is not a campaign, it is just a one shot quest. There will be some depth and a lot of rp opportunity.
The courier leaves you a letter and takes off to his next client. The envelope clearly stamped with the adventurer's guild sigil. As you break the wax seal you pull out the parchment and read,
You have been hired by the adventuring guild to partake in an investigation regarding Manalith’s recent loss of arcane powers. You are to report to town mayor, Hertle Runestone. A reward of 500gp will be granted upon return to the adventurer’s league. Safe journey.
You gather your belongings and set off to Manalith, the town where the magic truly happens. It is known for how full of animated life it has become. Tales of people never having to do chores as everything simply works. Brooms that sweep on their own, plates that clean themselves, and even cups capable of keeping liquids at just the right temperature indefinitely. Wonders like this can only exist in Manalith.
I am looking for a group of 4 players at level 5 for this adventure, posting availability at least once every 2 days. If players become inactive for more then 3 days I will move the story ahead making choices for your character. Recruitment will end in a week's time on July 3rd. I may close it earlier if I get many applicants quickly.
World Setting: High fantasy, swords and magic. No guns. Manalith is landlocked, surrounded by a dense forest. It has a small population of about 1000 people.
Character Building: Roll ability scores (standard 4d6 drop lowest) seven times, and drop the lowest rolled total. Final total of all rolls must be above 70 to count. If you add your scores together and don't reach this, re-roll stats.
Race Restrictions: No monstrous races allowed.
Starting Equipment: You start with both the starting equipment and starting gold. Also, you may choose one common magic item to add to your inventory. If you choose not to take one, you may have a Potion of Healing instead. Best source for common magic items is Xanathar's Guide.
Backgrounds: While not required for the one shot game, would be helpful to get a grasp of your character if you detail a few character traits or how your character joined the adventurer's guild.
Content Sharing: I do have content sharing available if anyone needs it just send me a PM. I'll give you a link once I've decided who is joining the game.

Li HaiYun was born to nobility in the capital of the mighty Shou Empire, also known as the Middle Kingdom. However, she was the youngest of five siblings and, she was the only female. Her parents sent her at a young age to the prestigious Shaoshi Monastery. A famous Shaolin Temple in the heart of the Shou Empire. There the Shaolin monks quickly realized that HaiYun had a great affinity for the natural elements and was a prodigious mystic. Thus they started calling her Ocean Cloud, for she was more attuned to the elements of water and air. When she grew of age, she found herself at the service of the Shou Emperor as a Mystic Adviser.
Although HaiYun is one of the youngest officers in the Imperial Palace, she was quick to adapt to the political drama (backstabbing) and got used to the bureaucracy that comes with working at a large government. Not exactly being a social person, she is reserved and keeps cool and collected at all time. She hates idle chatter and only speaks when there is a need. She rather let her actions speak for her. One of the things that she learned in the palace is that “The end justifies the means as long as the laws are being followed”, and she truly believes in that maxim.
The Emperor received news of the events at Manalith, and he was concerned that whatever happened there might be knocking at the Shou Empire’s door eventually. He summoned HaiYun one day and handed her an envelope stamped with a foreign adventurer’s guild sigil. He dispatched her to investigate and report back as soon as she can.
HaiYun packed light for the long trip, but made sure to bring her trusted NiaoBang (Staff of Birdcalls), an enchanted bō that can mimic a bird’s call. Although she is fairly fluent in Common, her accent, besides her appearance, gives out that she comes from a faraway country.

My tribe of Goliaths was small, but powerful. We were the smallest tribe in the land but none could conquer us. Why? Because we, unlike most goliaths learned how to use magic. The magic was dark and sinister, but allowed us to become a force of reckoning. When the time came for me to learn the dark arts, I was excited to be given this knowledge. My parents are one of the most proficient magic users in the tribe, but when it came time for me get my first taste of magic, I felt something dark and horrible clutch at my soul! Instantly I could tell that a piece of my soul had been ripped from me, I fled in terror trying to protect what was left of my ethereal identity. I realize now, that it is not the tribe that is using magic for their own gains... But it is the magic which is using my tribe for its own agenda. My family are puppets, dancing to an evil tune played by an unseen master. I vow to free my tribe, and if that proves to be impossible... I vow to take vengeance upon this master of darkness and reclaim the piece of my soul that was ripped from me. In order to fulfill my promise I have committed my life to the light and to what is good and just.... I fear that if I stray from this path, the rest of my soul may very well disappear from my body. The truth is... I dream of that fateful night that my soul was ripped out of me every night... Sleep does not come easy to me.

Background (in spoilers to shorten post):
Background:
Ignus was born to a mortal half-elf mother and a djinn during a time of great turmoil across the Elemental Planes. His father and some companions were seeking refuge in the mortal plane, and spent quite a bit of time in his mother's village before moving on. Many of the djinns had Genasi children there - Ignus was one of seven. When one may have been shunned, the sudden and undeniable presence of seven of these incredible beings could not be ignored. The village brought them up and eventually began to model themselves after the most prominent Genasi. Ignus was not one of them. While the others grew into confident soldiers with fiery personalties, Ignus questioned what the deeper meaning of their existence was. What did it mean to be essentially trapped between the mortal and elemental planes? What responsibilities did they have to their innate powers and bloodline? Where did they fit amongst the cosmos? Ignus yearned for knowledge and for answers, and spent more and more time reading and studying as he grew older. By far the most intelligent of the village children, his mother proudly sent him off to embark on his quest to become a wizard at the age of 16.
Ignus found himself shunned from many towns and cities thanks to his charcoal skin, but refused to abandon his calling. He spent years sneaking into academy libraries, watching spellcasters from afar, and taking odd jobs that might further his abilities. Finally, in his mid-20s, a young but talented wizard simply known as Arius discovered Ignus reading an ancient and often ignored text in a library basement. He took him under his wing and encouraged him to continue honing his magic. Eventually, Ignus became quite good - and he and Arius began traveling together, seeking out the big questions they both had. Ignus even began to glimpse visions - the past? The present? Some even seemed to be of future events, but they were always foggy.

Elirora is a noble half elf, usually scolded by her family due to her many odd interests. One day she was looking through old stuff from her family and found an ancient artifact that brought "the fiend" to her life. Feeling detached from her family she decided to travel and work for The fiend hoping to find her Independence and truly be free.

After he tragically lost his daughter he dedicated his life to the worship of Ilmater, and now travels outside of his tribe looking for people to help and try to prevent the pain and suffering he had experienced
(The manipulated die roll was cause I didn't originally multiply the gold roll. Those ability scores probably look suspicious but they were legit lol)
Also, I don't see many common magic item to choose from. Do you have any guidance on this?

Sleep is difficult now, filled with visions of things past (or perhaps future?), but the blade has given him purpose.
