Candlekeep, the realms’ largest repository of books and written word. Travelers from far and wide come hoping to gain entrance and make use the knowledge within the walls. The entrance requirement is widely known and seems so simple. A book, you must pay your entrance fee in the form of a book. Alas, there is a catch as not just any book will do. You must provide one that the library has never seen before. If you share your book with them they will share their books with you.
Your reason for coming to Candlekeep is your own. What knowledge do you seek that brought you to the Avowed? Do you have what it takes to unravel the mysteries within the walls of Candlekeep? Let’s find out!
Hello all! I am looking to run a cohesive Candlekeep Mysteries campaign. Yes I know, that’s not how the book was written but I think the episodic nature of it makes it a really great source book for a play by post campaign. With some additions and changes it can be an interesting story that I’d like to try out.
Expectations: Please commit to posting at least once a day if you want to play. I can post regularly generally multiple times per day. My time zone is GMT-4 if that matters to any of you. If we don’t hear from you I will assume you are quietly following along. In combat I will take your turn if it is more than 24hrs. Because of episodic nature if we need to fill or change players between chapters It should be rather seamless. I am hopeful this will keep the game alive.
About me: I’ve been playing in person/virtual games for a while but new to play by post. I have DM’ed Curse of Strahd for my friend group for the last year. I will certainly make mistakes but that’s part of the fun. I am also not an expert on the Forgotten Realms. This means characters and places might be different than what you have seen the books or played in other games. Hopefully this adds to your enjoyment and doesn’t take away from it.
Rule #1: Be Cool. This is the only rule (other than the ones in the books...) Please respect each other and we’ll have a good time. Legends state that violations of Rule #1 has caused “unexpected” comets to rain from the sky with pinpoint accuracy.
Character creation: Feel free to use any official material no UA/homebrew please. Characters will start at level 1. For stats you can either roll with the re-roll 1s once option or use point buy. If you roll please include the rolls in your application post. New players are absolutely welcome. Leveling will be done by milestones. I will leave application open for a few days or until we get 4 or so players with intriguing stories to tell!
If you have any questions or want some guidance on character creation don't be shy feel free to send me a DM.

What knowledge do you seek in Candlekeep? Please put this in a spoiler block.
A half-orc given as payment for protection to a green hag that after ten years of forced servitude managed to escape by poisoning the hag with a paralyzing toxin and forcing her in a pact where she both let him go and didn’t punish his hometown.
During captivity he was turned into a hexblood and taught a rudimentary level of magic.
Full Version:
On the border between Thay and Aglarond lies the Umber Marshes. A set of bogs, swamps, and mudflats flooded by shallow streams so tainted by submerged iron that their very waters are rust-brown. A place claimed by two nations, but watched by no masters or gods.
It was in there that few slaves, lucky enough to escape the thayan territory found freedom, but not without a price. In a dangerous land, he who wants to survive must seek his own protectors. For a hamlet hidden deep into Umber, such protector was a green hag known only as the Crone. Ancient and vicious, she demanded payment for her service in blood. Once every ten years the villagers should give one of their children to the witch and so they did.
Sometimes the Crone would eat the offering, sometimes use it as part of an arcane ritual. On occasion she would simply take the child as a servant. Such was the fate of Velan. He was naught but ten years old when the villagers gave him away. The hag took him and transformed him into a kin of sorts, a hexblood. She trained him in the mystical arts, so he could understand when she asked for a material component or the drawing of a spell circle. A steward made incapable to run and kept too weak to fight, or so the witch thought.
It took him eleven years, but Velan managed to sneak a paralyzing poison in the hag’s food. As the substance took effect the powerful fey was brought to her knees. He wanted to kill the Crone, but he knew that without her the hamlet would be overrun by monsters. He thought about forcing her to free the hamlet of paying the tribute, but he knew there was a pact between her and the villagers, sealed by magic, impossible to break. In the end, putting a knife against her neck, he demanded the next best things: “Promise me. Promise by blood, that you’ll never look for me or send someone after me. That you’ll send me to a place safe for me and won’t punish the hamlet. Promise me in a pact, or you die.”
She attended his demands, teleporting Velan to Glarandar with nothing but the clothes on his back. That was not a problem, for even his limited education on the arcane was enough to ensure work as a mercenary. What terrified him was his past and fact that in another decade another child would suffer like he did, if not worse.
What knowledge do you seek in Candlekeep?
Vela seeks the knowledge on how to void the pact the Crone has over his homeland and defeat the Hag for once.
What book did you bring to gain entrance? The book of alchemical recipes used by the Crone (a book with the arcane knowledge of an adult hag).
Name: Ludolf Crowley Race: Human (variant) Class: Warlock (Great Old One) Background: Sage Backstory: Born to a moderately wealthy merchant operating out of Bryn Shander in Icewind dale, Ludolf was always a peculiar child, ever resorting to reading anything he could lay his hands on. The uncle had devoted his life to gather books for his personal library, and there Ludolf found a true home among the dusty tomes and grimoires. Daventry was born and raised in Wyrwood, a small village on the borders of the Mere of Dead Men to the north. Not content with a life in the muck and under the threats of destruction from the creatures of the Mere, she went against her family's wishes to stay on the homestead by departing for Neverwinter. She spent time crewing a merchant vessel that traveled the Sword Coast and Moonshae isles, and apprenticed as a navigator when the ship's captain realized the young woman had a quick wit to match her quick blade. One night while casually eavesdropping on some highborn passengers going to Caer Callidyrr in Moonshae, she overheard talk of hidden arcane treasures on one of the islands, which one of the nobles had a map for.
Tempted by this, she broke into the man's luggage and absconded with the map, along with the ship's pinnace and several week's supplies. She found the island, and discovered that she was not the first to reach this treasure -- most of it had long been looted, but she found a small container with wizard's spellbook and a leather-bound grimoire covered in glowing orange runes of a language that she did not understand. When she touched the rune on the cover, there was a spark of energy that connected her and the book, and she was able to glimpse into the Weave, discovering the pathways of magic that she never thought she could possibly harness.
In her travels, she had heard of Candlekeep as a place of learning, where perhaps she could come to understand this grimoire further. Avoiding her old crew and the men she had stolen from, she arranged passage aboard another ship to Baldur's Gate, and traveled to Candlekeep on the Coast Way. She bought her entrance with the Wizard's spellbook, and begun seeking out further knowledge of the mystery secured within her pack. At least, that's the intent... but travels and life have left her coin purse close to empty.
Back story: Torquil is the youngest son of 5 siblings - 2 brothers and twin sisters, representing the latest generation of the Greystoke family, the epitome of old money... However, given the lack of need to have serious interests in running the family businesses, or to go into politics, or to make a good alliance with other noble families, he has very much been the pampered younger child. His voracious intellect covers many topics, but where his especial interest lies is in the merging of magic with the physical world, and the inventiveness of the clever mind. And fashion - one wouldn’t be seen dead under-dressed…
What knowledge do you seek in Candlekeep?
Torquil is looking for information on two books in particular: On the Uses of Platinum for the Forging of Sigils, by Thomas Gentan and Models for the Calculation of Energy Reservoirs by Ralph Fou’tain the Younger, but is also looking for anything that will provide insight in the creation of small, permanent magic items.
What book did you bring to gain entrance? The uses of Sapphire as an Energy Focus, by Dr Francis Weldon (annotated by Jeremiah Threlstrop, Cormyr Court Artificer)
Back story: Triäsa was born and raised in Silverymoon. Her parents both having lived in the city for some time. Her father was human (though his grandfather was elvish) and had also grown up in Silverymoon. He studied plants and animals and worked with the University of Silverymoon. Though not having any magic abilities himself, he taught and researched in those areas. Her mother was an elf and it was said she originally came from the Feywild. She was a powerful wizard and worked as a researcher for the Vault of Sages.
Thus from an early age, both Triäsa and her younger sister Faelynn spent a lot of time amongst books and scholars. Triäsa was also a strong student and took eagerly to her studies. But she never seemed to show any proclivity for using magic. When she was about 8, and her sister was 6, their mother died. It was said to have been by suicide. However, Triäsa feels like it had something to do with the research she was doing. Her specialty was in conjuration, especially involving other dimensional connections.
After her mother's death, her father was very upset and ended up squandering much of the family's resources. They were at risk of losing their grand, large home when something occurred. Shortly after, Triäsa took up playing the lute. It was actually rather remarkable, as she had no real training but picked up an instrument and could almost immediately play. It became one of her favorite pastimes and she got rather good.
It was over a year later, as their family was hitting on financial difficulties, that someone overheard her playing while at the university with her father. One of the senior bards, she immediately recognized Triäsa's bardic abilities. A short time later the woman had arranged to have Triäsa serve as an assistant and begin training her, despite being just 9 at the time. The arrangement saw her living in simple quarters at the university and only seeing her family now and then. In time, Triäsa became a full-fledged member of the College of Fochlucan in Silverymoon and became a bard. Now, she feels ready to venture off on her own, despite the misgivings of her teacher. And most especially those of her father.
What knowledge do you seek in Candlekeep?
Though not an expert, Triäsa has tried to study as much she can about the work her mother had done with interplanar portals and travel. She thinks somewhere within all this information there is more to what caused her mother's disappearance. In fact, there is one mysterious name that she feels must be important - but she does not know it is a place, a person, an artifact, or maybe just some obscure arcane concept beyond her knowledge. Whatever the case, that is the first thing that she would like to learn.
What book did you bring to gain entrance?Defense and Security of Interplanar Rifts by Ysildea Galadon (Triäsa's mother)

Character Name: Lord Torquil Fanderay Mercy Greystoke
Class: Artificer

(Note: Would like to use the Cloistered Scholar background but did not have access to it for my character sheet. Sage background is the same with the exception of the Feature being Library Access rather than Researcher.)
Back story:
Triäsa was born and raised in Silverymoon.
