I'm gathering interest for a Lost Mine of Phandelver (Starter Set) campaign. Looking for 5 PCs. If you are new to D&D, fifth edition, or the Play-by-Forum style, this is a great opportunity to hop in. I've run this campaign a few times now, and it's a great way to bring new players into D&D. If you are a seasoned D&D veteran, you are still welcome to apply. I would like at least a couple players who are very familiar with playing by forum, but please do not apply if you have played or run the Lost Mine of Phandelver campaign before.
Preference will be given as such:
Newer players. If you have never played D&D before you are welcome here, but you must at least be familiar and comfortable with the 5th Edition ruleset. It is available freely online.
Play-by-Forum positive players. No method provides better narrative than Play-by-Forum. There are so many lurkers in these forums reading campaigns like the one you are about to write. I'm looking for players who will think for a minute and type up a well-thought post with detail. No "I attack an enemy" or "Shooting crossbow rolls dice" posts here. I prefer grittiness and realism in my campaigns, so I do not fudge rolls or adjust behavior. Enemies are not friendly, and reckless tactics may get your character killed.
Consistency. My goal is not to start this campaign. My goal is to finish this campaign, and yours should be too.
Posting should happen at a minimum of once per day. If you do not post in 24 hours, I will act for your character for the turn. I'm not too harsh on this, but frequent absence is an immersion-killer, and will result in your character being replaced. If for some reason I am unable to post regularly, I will do my best to announce this ahead of time.
A detailed post will be forthcoming on how I play (I mostly play with rules as written, but provide a couple of house rule options and roll initiative in a more Play-by-Forum-friendly manner, for example).
If you are interested, please reply to this thread or send me a private message with answers to the following questions:
How long have you been playing D&D?
How long have you been playing 5th Edition?
Have you played in a Play-by-Forum campaign on this site or others before?
What do you enjoy most about D&D? Do you prefer roleplaying over combat or vice-versa?
What character would you like to play? If possible, provide at least race, class, and a short description of backstory. No homebrew content. Keep the description of the backstory simple (for now). I will help translate that into a bond or a personal goal that fits this campaign.
I have started playing dnd with 3.5 but had almost 10 years brake from roleplaying (with some short playtesting 4e, NEXT)
I play 5e only via pbp. Few months
I have to say that i love heavy tactic grid combat (yeah 4e lover here) mixed with good roleplaying between characters and some mystery solving.
I would like to try storm sorcerer with sailor background (shipcrew left him in the port after he survived thunder struck in the crow's nest..you know bad luck for the ship).
If possible i would like to go with "black panter" tabaxi who is in love with barmaid Selena. Unfrotunately her father thinks he is to poor.
I've played a few campaigns in 3.5 years ago and recently our group got back together! However, we only get together once a month if we're lucky and I'd like to play more frequently. I enjoy the role-playing aspects, puzzle solving, critical thinking and humor that can come along in a campaign. I'd like to get into a group that isn't too advanced but takes it seriously.
The issue I have is my party is just finishing lost mines and we're about to transition into princes of the abyss. I'd like to join you but it sounds like you want fresh players who haven't seen the content of this module, is that right?
Seeking 1-3 3rd level characters for Lost Mine of Phandelver, the 5th edition starter campaign. This campaign is in progress, and a recent player departure for lack of time has led to a need to bolster the party. If you are looking for a consistent PbP group or have never finished this campaign, this is the perfect opportunity to do so!
If you are interested after reading the details below, please reply here or in a PM. Include the race/class you would like to play, and a short background summary. You will be meeting the party in the frontier mining town of Phandalin, where they will recruit you to assist them in the rescue of their dwarven employer from the clutches of a tribe of goblins and bugbears, though there seems to be something more sinister motivating them...
Standard Array, Point Buy, and “Roll 4d6 Drop Lowest” are all acceptable for generating ability scores, but if you are using rolls, those rolls must be made here or in a PM, and there are no rerolls allowed. Rolling is a gamble, if you don't want to chance lower-than-average scores, take the Standard Array or Point Buy.
Your HP gains from 2nd and 3rd level will be rolled after ability scores are determined and a class is chosen. Multiclassing is perfectly acceptable.
Good or neutral alignments are acceptable for this adventure, and I will trust the players to roleplay well within a party. Make sure that chaotic neutral is fun for everybody, not just the chaotic neutral.
About The DM:
- I started playing D&D with 5E. I DM three RL groups and very much enjoy how PbP campaigns allow groups of people to come together and create an awesome story.
- Players have 24 hours to post before the story advances, unless it is a situation where only one or two players' input is necessary to advance. However, I can typically update more frequently if all players post quickly. With your response to this recruitment, please send me a PM that includes the phrase “honesty of Tyr” so I know I will have players with attention to detail.
- I stick mostly to using RAW, but for the sake of speed and fluency in PbP, I roll initiative in groups, and actions in combat are resolved in order of posting.
- I don't use average dice rolls. Enemy/NPC health is rolled, all damage is rolled, and character HP gains will be rolled when they level up.
- Your character can die. I don't fudge any rolls, so be aware that reckless actions can have rough consequences.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

How long have you been playing D&D, experience in 5e and experience with PBP?
I've been playing IRL D&D 5e for about 2 year and I'm just getting into PBP, He has played IRL D&D 5e for about a year and hasn't played PBP before.
What do you enjoy most about D&D? Do you prefer roleplaying over combat or vice-versa?
I like a good mix of combat and RP but I'm pretty flexible, he's looking to get more experience in both but leans more towards combat.
What character would you like to play? If possible, provide at least race, class, and a short description of backstory. No homebrew content. Keep the description of the backstory simple (for now). I will help translate that into a bond or a personal goal that fits this campaign.
Him and I would like to play Rock gnome twin brothers (one being a cleric and one being a barb) who were taken in by the church of Helm because their parents and a younger sibling perished at the hands of bandits. Caldon works in the church as a cleric and tries to keep his brother Cormac under control. The Gruck brothers become so bored with their day to day lives working in the city and spent much of their spare time reliving the stories their parents told them of their adventures before settling down that they decided to set out on an adventure of their own.
141610121612 Cormac 22 HP roll
14111614711 Caldon 9 HP roll
I didn't edit the rolls but can reroll if you require, for some reason once I added the HP it said I did. No big deal either way.
Interested in a Variant Human Fighter, Sword & Board, Battlemaster. Bethany the Bold.
Bethany was the daughter of an innkeeper. Her mother died in childbirth, so her dad raised her as best he could. Bethany dreamed of life as anywhere but working in her father's inn as a cook or barmaid. She was fascinated by stories of battle travelers brought in, and when she was sixteen she ran off to Baldur’s Gate and joined the Flaming Fists. As a rookie, she mostly cooked and kept watch over the beggars in the slums. Her opportunity for glory came when the Fists took part in the Klauthen Crusade, a coalition effort to slay an ancient red dragon that has made the North it's home. Beth would be sent on this mission, but only as a cook far away from the action. Her one bright spot was training with Ednar of Neverwinter, a grizzled quartermaster who used to be an active soldier. He sparred with her and he tried to get her a combat position. It was he who inducted her into the Order of the Gauntlet. Klauth, commonly called Old Snarl, easily scattered the invading forces. Rather than make the long trip back South, she returned home and learned of her father's death. She is at a loss as to what is next. She came to Phandalin to find work, whether a guard on a hunt, or whatever looked tempting.

Roddy was born near Daggerford and because of his love for civilization he decided to make his way towards the town. At a young age you could find Roddy offering himself to the townsfolk to help with almost any task they had. After several years because of Roddy's hardwork he was offered a job as a city watch/protector of Daggerford. After being a guard for sometime he had noticed a large increase in goblin attacks on the town and was dispatched to find where they were coming from and to root out the evil if possible.
Sylstyra was the seventh child to an elven father and half-elven mother on the continent of Kara-Tur. Her parents were incredibly wealthy, but got involved in an underground organization that trafficked stolen goods to and from Faerun. She was born during a raid of the organizations headquarters while her parents were hiding in a secret room. Her father managed to escape, after which he dissappeared and never returned. His mother remained in prison for years, where she eventually became very ill and died.
Her father's family took her and her siblings in, having 'mysteriously' been given access to her family's fortune. They grew up in a large mansion and led an exhuberant lifestyle. As a result of their parents absence, the siblings grew and remained very close. They eventually each found their callings and most moved from the home and live in the city they grew up in. One of them became involved in politics and eventually became a high ranking and influencial official in the city.
Sylstyra was drawn to the divine early, as a way of dealing with the absence of her parents. She explored many different faiths, eventually finding solace in the teachings of Bahamut, after the dragon appeared to her in a compelling vision. Her connection to Bahamut is a deep one, and she has developed the ability to channel her faith into the material plane.
As her life progressed, she felt a growing curiosity about the world beyond her city and the continent of Kata-Tur. Despite the work she did with the temple and the close connection with her family, Sylsyra felt a significant absence in her life. She read and heard stories of Faerun and eventually became convinced that the experience of seeing it for herself might help fulfil that gap. She set out, in hopes of finding the piece missing from her life.
During the journey over, Sylstyra befriended a halfling named Sorin. Sorin was a bard and frequently played music on the board while Sylstyra listend. The two became friends during the journey and intended to adventure together when they reached Faerun. Unfortunately fate had other ideas.
Shortly after coming ashore in Waterdeep, Sorin became involved with the Zhentarim - an underground crime synidcate prominent in the city. She tried to convince Sylstyra to join as well - which she very nearly did. As a pre-condition of becoming full members of the clan, they were required to carry out the kidnapping of a young noble in the city. They planned the caper and almost went through with it, but Sylstyra abandoned the task at the last minute - her conscience getting the best of her. Her desertion resulted in Sorin's arrest, after which she was fined, jailed for several years and then exiled from the city.
Being concerned of her reputation and wanting a clean slate, Syltyra left Waterdeep and set out for a new home, eventually ending up in Neverwinter where she joined the local temple of Bahamut hoping to find some meaningful work and adventure. Fortunately for her she is a friendly and outgoing person who has always made friends easily, so being in a new city is not such a daunting feeling for her. Adventure has a way of finding her, eventually...
