Ok, I've been having fun with my Company of the Dragon campaigns, so thought I would try something a little different. I would like to see if there is interest in doing a race to the prize sort of game, using the Mad Mage as our playground.
The way this would work is that everyone is on their own.
For some reason your character needs to get into Under Mountain. It may be a treasure you seek, a piece of lore only found there, a lost relative thought to be in Under Mountain... Whatever the reason, you are now heading into the Mad Mage's domain. There are others after what you seek, and you know it is going to be found by whomever gets to it first.
For characters, I want a mix of alignments, but otherwise things are 100% up to you. No home-brew, but anything else on DND Beyond is allowed.
Abilities are reroll all ones, and roll 7 dice instead of 6. Drop the lowest result.
Will be starting at 5th level. You can have one rare magic item, and two uncommon items. Items will be reviewed by me, and there may be some veto or negotiation there.
Other equipment is to outfit your character as you wish with normal gear. Want full plate, go for it. Need a spellbook, no problem, a war horse, have one. As long as it is not magical, or a magical component, you can have it. Coins and gems do not count, and please do not take a huge amount of gear in the idea of reselling it. I'll just pick someone else's character submission instead of yours. Also make sure the gear is appropriate for your character and backstory.
I need players who can post daily. If you cannot, generally speaking, post on a daily basis, then please do not submit a character. Things do come up, and I am 100% understanding of such things.
With all of this said, let's see what characters people want to play here... Give me the following:
Backstory: During the great war, Saboteur was created to fight behind enemy lines. He was designed to gather intelligence and with that he set many traps and ambush through out the war. However his last mission was to investigate a enemy wizard tower. The mission stated that the wizard tower held a relic that could control teleportation and planer magic. That power could very well end the war, according to the higher ups. The mission was to either find or destroy this relic if it wasn’t secured. During the raid on the tower his unit was seen and a skirmish broke out. During the scuffle the relic activated send Saboteur out into the multiverses. Landing him in Faerun, alone with his unit he kept to himself search for a way back to complete his mission. He began to study the locals learning the basic common in a few minutes. He passed through water deep when he heard tells of the Under Mountain and it’s Mad Mage. Perhaps it keeping untold secrets, maybe he can find away back to Eberron and continue the war he left unfinished. He went to the local library disguised at a studying all he could about mountains and the under dark. He found a group in need of a scout and volunteered his service. Hopefully it will prove beneficial to work with them.
Magic items: Cloak of Displacement, boots of elven kind and bracers of archery
Backstory: Being driven away from the Underdark and having fled to the dwarven stronghold of Dum-Garad Fryppeg never envisioned him to be an adventurer
For a living he helped the dwarves by being their artist blacksmith. Life was good and easy and Fryppeg had lot of time for his personal pet project.
Fryppeg loves tinkering with stuff and experimenting with the unexpected. He never understood why armor and arcane magic should be difficult to combine while priests seemd to have no problem with it. He intended to prove that this was mere superstition and that it all could be intertwined,
But one day his cousin brought him a strange apparatus found in the undermountain which would change his life. Fryppeg finally could prove his theories. He worked day and night on this apparatus testing and experimenting with it and thus created H.A.D.E.S. V1.0 (Hybrid Arcane Divine Enhancement Suit)
Now he needs to go into the Undermountain himself to see what else can be found there and salvage it before others take it.
Magic items: Mizzium Apparatus, Luckstone, Staff of Defense
Backstory: An adventurer from the day that he could pick up a sword Rosin found himself in many predicaments and eventually one of them was to much. With the help of an unknown entity he made it out pledging his sword to pursue what ever it would need for the power it offered. He now finds himself adventuring towards the Undermount in search of treasure and ancient knowledge for the being that has been helping him out.
Name: 'Old' Urukar, Chief of the White Bear and Grey Eagle Tribes
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Barbarian
Background: Outlander
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Backstory: Leader of a tribe of orcs from the Spine of the World for over 30 years, Urukar beheaded the previous chief during single combat to take his place. His leadership caused unrest within the tribe, seeing the half-orc as unfit to rule over a tribe of 'proper' orcs. A regular stream of would-be chiefs looking to depose their new leader gradually dwindled to a trickle, the heads fixed on spikes around his longhouse. Uniting another tribe, the Grey Eagles, with his own, also helped to cement his power. Urukar's half brother, a pure orc returned from raiding and banditry after many years away, has declared his intention to become chief, but not through combat. He has challenged Urukar to find something of wondrous power that will lead their tribe to glory. Unable to decline any challenge to his power, Urukar accepts, and immediately sets off for the south, as his half-brother heads east, hearing tales of the vast Underdark accessible, strangely, through a tavern in Waterdeep...
Things will be kept seperate to start. It all depends on how things move forward though. For now let's concentrate on getting applications completed. If all I see is ability scores you won't be included in the ones I decide between.
Zhatar grew up with Elves as his mother was one. But being only a Half Elf he was always being picked on because he did not fit in. He was said to be one of the short lived races and that he did not deserve the effort of education since he would die soon anyway. This always angered Zhatar making him study as much as he could. Getting to be a little older he learned nature was where he found most inspiration. He found it very interesting to see how creatures survived in the wilds and dealth with illness without having potions and healers. He began to study creatures and herbs to see if the two related.
His study became more and more obsessive, Zhatar was determined to learn all about life and how it is being sustained by nature. Determined to show the Elves he could outlive even them. He researched many herbs, potions and other concoctions to test the effects on a living being. Some Elves frowned upon this, condemning it, saying he went to far as sometimes it killed the creature he was testing it on. Zhatar worried about this at first but was convinced even in death creatures can be usefull. They would be usefull for plants or other creatures to feed off of. So it was not a complete loss.
Zhatar became interested in anything related to prolonging life and improving one's health. He picked up a few items in his journey that related to this. One interesting was his Ring of Mind Shielding. Not for its direct effects but because it was said to be able to hold the wearers soul. Effectively preventing absolute death. He researched any lore about this and spoke to many who knew of such artifacts. His focus on life and death now wandered a fine line between what some consider good or evil. But Zhatar only wants to learn if he could sustain a creature indefinitely, and undead were a fascinating subject.
After an exploration trip to some city recently struck by raids Zhatar found something that set his path towards a new location. It was a mirror. Seemingly uninteresting at first the mirror started showing Zhatar glimpses of the past. It was unclear what the mirror was showing but at some point it showed an orb of great power. The body that Zhatar found the mirror on turned out to be an escaped servant of the Mad Mage. A dwarf who helped build it. The mirror showed him the past and how this dwarf had seen such an artifact of power. Researching about this orb it was likely to contain such power that it could fuel transformations of the body. Something Zhatar would need to permanently prolong his existence instead of the temporary effects magic and potions had done up to now.
Zhatar prepared for this journey, determined to use this orb to reach his ultimate goal. He set off to the dungeon of the Mad Mage.

The way this will work is that you will be given an adventure budget to start, and can outfit yourself, or even hire some adventurers to go with you, before you go into Under Mountain. This budget is above and beyond the starting data from above, and is specifically used to get yourself, or your recruited group, ready to head down into the dungeon complex. I will explain more once I pick the people who will be in the campaign.

You can do so if you want. I have heard that you can turn your phone sideways and get the dice roller to show up that way, if that helps. Anyone is ok to take standard array or point buy if they wish though.
