Welcome to Baldur's Gate, a city of ambition and corruption. You’ve just started your adventuring career, but already find yourself embroiled in a plot that sprawls from the shadows of Baldur's Gate to the front lines of the planes-spanning Blood War! Do you have what it takes to turn infernal war machines and nefarious contracts against the archdevil Zariel and her diabolical hordes? And can you ever hope to find your way home safely when pitted against the infinite evils of the Nine Hells?
Looking for 4-6 players for Baldurs Gate: Descent into Avernus play-by-post.
Start at level 1, any official sources for races and classes, no homebrew, no UA, no Critical Role content. Use Standard array or point buy. Submit character name, race and class and a short backstory.
Disclaimer: I dmed before but never did play-by-post before. So one player who can help with technicalities like how combat works in pbp and give general advice on how to do pbp would be preferred. This is an experiment on pbp for me. I don't guarantee for a long lifespan of the game. If you still want to play, you are welcome.
Backstory: Lokat was the son of a brilliant sage working under the thane of his settlement. Due to his father's knowledge in magic, Lokat had many siblings for a dwarven family, most of whom have been blessed with strange magical attributes. At a young age, his mother was taken away mysteriously by a strange group of dwarves not from the settlement, and even stranger there was little-to-no outrage. Growing up close to the thane, Lokat and his siblings were put to work easily, with Lokat assisting the cartographers and map makers of the settlement. During his 30's, still a young dwarf, Lokat started to experience random blackouts after certain nights of drinking, about once a month. The day after these blackouts, Lokat would find himself accused of assault by one of his drinking patrons. These claims, however, would not hold in court due to his influence to the thane, and that these assault claims, despite the defendants recognizing the assailant of Lokat in such a blind range he did not look himself, the wounds did not appear to come from a dwarf naturally.
To protect his son, not knowing the full extent of why Lokat is experiencing these blackouts, Lokat's father instructed his son to move far to Baldur's Gate to work under a family friend.
Hells yes. I'm gonna toss Rhys Eiristar into the ring. Went with the gladiator background to start with a sword.
Name: Rhys Eiristar Race: Half-elf (High) Class: Wizard (Bladesinger) Backstory: Rhys was born to Martina Hallsteader--and originally bore her last name--a young woman living in Baldur's Gate. Though his elven father, Beroan Eiristar was not a part of his life, Martina kept in contact with him through letters. One fateful day, she mentioned that Rhys had a knack for the arcane, and for the first time in ten years, Beroan came to visit his son. Through the use of charm magic (though Rhys does not know this), Beroan convinced Martina to let him take the boy with him back to his elven home.
While with his father in Estelbar (or an actual FR elven city if something works better), Rhys studied the art of arcane magic, as well as swordplay. By the age of 15, Rhys was proficient with both, and began to fight in tournaments, representing his father. Whenever Rhys won, Beroan would say that he performed as expected. Whenever he lost, his father would chide him and call him a disappointment. This drove Rhys to strive for nothing less than perfection.
For years, Rhys would ask about his mother, but Beroan assured him that she has no interest in him anymore. One day, however, Rhys finds a half-burned letter, written to him, from Martina. He confronted his father, who told him connections to his "human side" would only hold him back. Rhys set off, however, to Baldur's Gate to find his mother.
Hey! I'm very interested in joining! I also have extensive experience with pbp (albeit not on DnDBeyond), so if you ever need any help or have any questions, I'm more than happy to give some advice or feedback, even if you don't wind up selecting me for the campaign!
I see you're allowing any official source for characters. Are we also using Tasha's customizing your origin optional rules? I'm assuming you have all the sourcebooks unlocked on here? Because I actually don't have any! Finally, assuming you do have them all unlocked, although you say any official material, i do have to ask if you allow the Ravnica guild backgrounds? Obviously, this adventure doesn't take place in Ravnica, but the guilds are easy enough to reskin to fit any setting.
If you get back to me, I can put a character together really quickly and hopefully help balance out the group! I'm really excited and looking forward to this, thanks!

I do allow Tasha's customizing your origin rules. I have not read guildmasters guide to ravnica, but since it is official material, I am sure it is balanced. Go ahead and reskin it for a forgotten realms setting. By the way, I won't lay focus on factions outside of city level as most of the campaign will play in the titular Avernus.
Leshanna is a bounty hunter out of the Fey Wilds. She tracks down those who flee justice, don't wish to pay up their debts, or just about anyone else a price is placed on. Her desire is not to return them to justice, or to face those who put the price on their heads for other reason, but to perform the hunt. The hunt is everything to her, the testing of her skills against those of another. She has always taken on the more difficult of quarries, wishing to only test herself against those of her skill level or above.
For this module I would see her as wishing to test herself against the hells. To show she is indeed a hunter of the highest caliber, able to trek into hell itself and return.
Backstory: Koratana Ashana, also known as Kora or Asha by her close friends and family, was born to a Kalashtar hermitage. Being a Kalashtar, she's connected to a spirit from the dream plane. But unlike the others from her hermitage, she was the only one who talked to her Quori out loud.
Growing up, she felt a natural connection to nature, which led her to follow the path of magic connected to nature. When she reached age 30, she split from her hermitage and had been living on her own. After years of wandering, going from city to city, taking boats and caravans, she ended up where she is now, looking for a way to help others, in any way she can.
Cloak settled among the humans in Silverymoon and was apprenticed to a wizened Gnome gemcutter until it became clear that he didn’t have the skills to have the long and stable career that his family encouraged him to pursue.
In his formative years he loved the tales his uncle, a well-travelled rogue, was always telling him of his adventures. Longing to follow in his footsteps and become a legendary thief he sought out an old contact of his uncle and was soon receiving ‘a real’ education as a member of the Many Cats (of Many Cats Lane), a band of treasure-hungry scoundrels who would rinse the North Bank residents and traders of their coin and trinkets at every opportunity. Over-extending their abilities, the greedy band attempted to pull off a heist that went horribly wrong. With one of their party dead, and a vengeful gang looking to snuff out the rest of them, they quickly went their separate ways, with the shadowy contact sending Cloak to Baldur’s Gate to lie low and await further instructions.
During his time running with the Many Cats it became Cloak’s ambition to become an Arcane Trickster.

Name: Alastar Bel
Race: Elf (Mark of Shadows)
Class: Paladin
Backstory: Alastar belongs to a group of elves that have been blessed with Spellcasting abilities that allow them to manipulate light and shadows. Some have become great performers, others manipulate politics. Alastar decided to follow the latter route, not as an opportunist, but rather as a reformer and joined the legal school of Balder's Gate, studying the law to one day write it, while working as an enforcer of the law. He is loyal to a fault, and often works the shadows for those he believes to be good and/or that represent a good cause.
I'm planing on taking oath of the watchers but we'll see based on how the campaign goes.
So it's a race from Eberron, a background from Ravnica (Azorius Functionary, reschooled as the lawmakers and police of Balder's Gate), and a class from Tasha's. If you don't have any of that unlocked on DnDBeyond just let me know and I can readjust as necessary.
Just FYI, ThoricAlaris and RDCHRIS are the same guy, i never realized that I have two different accounts logged in on my tablet and phone? Sorry for the confusion lol
Backstory: Moralesh walked through the ashes of his once vibrant village searching for his parents. He found what was left his his house, rubble and embers still glowing. He dug his way through till he found his parents and baby brother in what was left of the master bedroom, they just putting Noctua down for his nap when the attack happened. His parents didn't have time to respond or move from where they were when the flaming boulders came down upon the village. The townsfolk of the next city over had attacked many times before to drive off the small village of dragonborn, never having done more than bruise a few people or hurl insults their way, until now.
To Moralesh it seemed strange and wrong, at his young age he didn't understand the fear and apprehension that was often directed towards those of his kind, nor did he understand that he was now an orphan. He curled up between his parents not knowing where else to go and cried until he slept. When he awake it was to a noise of someone shouting in a tongue that he didn't recognize. Curious more than scared he crept out of the rubble to see what was making the noise.
Hrothbert, walking through the aftermath of the battle was heartbroken at the needless slaughter is shouting "Anyone here, I came to help!" He knew that many had manager to flee by the abundance of tracks leaving the village but he knew, after whitnessing many scenes like this before, that there were bound to be someone, buried, lame, or mourning, still in the area. He turns quickly at the sound of movement and sees the young, half starved, black dragonborn crawling to the top of a destroyed cottage.
Moralesh locked eyes with the strange man and seeing compassion in them starts to move toward him but collapses do to his hunger and fatigue. When he awoke he was in a small apartment, wrapped in warm blankets, with a small bowl of stew and glass of water nearby. He quickly ate and drank and looked around.
Hrothbert sat at a nearby table watching intently as the youngling studied it's surroundings. The human saw such fierce intelligence and innocence in the dragonborn that he decided raise, teach, and train the toddler.
Moralesh grew quickly, as one of his race would, and learned the common tongue quite easily. Hrothbert taught him how to wield all manner of weapons and to protect himself. They chose to use the date he was found as his birth date as Moralesh did not remember it. He did remember his family name though. One time Moralesh had asked to have Hrothbert's family name but the older man refused stating "Your family name is your own, you must grow to bring honor to your family and not mine." So he proudly walks in his heritage, Moralesh Honabi, dragonborn, raised by a human paladin, trained as a fighter.
Name: Briar Race: Human Class: Cleric (Life) Briar was raised in a small coastal village. Her aunt was a priestess of Chauntea, and Briar idolized her. When Briar was old enough, she became an acolyte to her aunt and learned how to become a priestess herself. Unfortunately, the village was decimated one day by sahuagin raiders. Briar and some of the other survivors relocated to Baldur's Gate and other nearby settlements. Briar is hoping to find a new purpose in the city and a way to help people to make up for failing her village.
Race: Tiefling Class: Monk (Way of Shadow) Backstory: Skaron grew up in Brampton, the eighth child and third son of the union between his tiefling mother and father. His parents, pushed to the brink in a life of poverty in an uncaring city, could do well to feed themslves, and as their children grew quickly came to realize that they were more a nuisance to their parents than anything. Each left home as soon as they were able. Skaron therefore only knows his siblings as acquaintences, and hasn't seen most of them for years.
Skaron took a job as a cook in a greasy tavern in Brampton, but he loved to fight, and would frequently compete in wagered cage matches held in back alleys and bars. He was a natural fighter, perhaps due to his demonic heritage, and quickly became a crowd favorite. He also enjoyed playing cards, and in one game he was accused of cheating by a Guild kingpin's cousin. He was, in fact, cheating, and in the fight that ensued he accidentally crippled the man without realizing the connection. He got the Guild to back off demands for his death by offering to make amends by working for the criminals. He traded his apron and cook's tools for a life of thievery and thuggery. Even so, he suspected the kingpin still plots a personal revenge. He took an opportunity for gainful employment with the Flaming Fists, and still catches himself looking back over his shoulder.
Sounds interesting, I played Baldur's Gate I and II on PC and would love to return to that city :)

Character Name: Nym Durnodel Race: Drow / Dark Elf Class: Cleric (Twilight Domain) Ability Scores: Point Buy Brief Backstory: After generations of branching out from Drow culture, the older generations of Nym's clan had been shown by the Goddess Selune that there was a way other than following Lolth's evil ways and that they could live in the Twilight in peace. Nym's mother was killed by Lolth devout Drow for speaking heresy of worshiping a different diety. They tried to breach out of the underground, still living mostly in dense forests and caves, but the locals weren't very reciprocating. Her father had ventured out to try and trade with the nearby village and was cut down due to a misunderstanding. Then taken in by their clan's head priestess, Nym studied fervently under her elders tutelage as a Cleric of Selune before petitioning that if she could go out and make a name for herself, for their clan, that it would help others see them as other than followers of Lolth. So Nym set out to earn money to help fund her clan's budding new home as well as become a positive influence on behalf of all non evil aligned Drow.
Sounds fun, I would love to join. I reccomend also @Seldim, I plyaed with him and we are both reliable and with good posting rates
Character Name: Uthred Race: Human variant Class: Barbarian Ability Scores: point buy Brief Backstory: chased away by his family's tribe for heritance problems, he is now working as a sailor and mercenary but in the end he just wants to gather enough money and power to get his land back
Name: Tupelo (Sheet) Race: Stout Halfling Class (including subclass if applicable): Ranger (going swarmkeeper) Ability Scores: Point buy (see sheet) Background: Outlander Backstory:
Tupelo's first memories are those of playing with dead bushes, or as he sees it: His brothers and sisters. After being left in the woods as a toddler he was brought up by the blights living in these woods. Most of his life he lived there, just him, the beings of the forests and of course his blight friends.
Occasionally some humanoid races would travel through the forest. He was always interested in knowing more about them, following them around the forest without them knowing. Learning their languages and ways. At first the blights held him away from these beings, fearing for the dangers they posed. Not able to keeping his curiosity in check eventually Tupelo met with the humanoids traveling through the forest, offering himself as a guide, keeping them safe from the dangers that live in the woods.
Everything was fine this way. Until, around the age of 17, he with his best friend Ash (a twig blight) in tow offered his services to some shady individuals. They tried to rob him of his belongings. Not having any, since he had lived his whole live in the woods, they became angry with him and started beating him. Ash came out of the woods to try and save him. Fortunately after having beaten a twig blight they had had enough and left both of them for dead without actually finishing the deed. Tupelo was crying with Ash dying in his hands. This is the moment he decides he has to go out into the world and become stronger so he can protects his forest friends.
One of the offspring of Ash decides to go with him to protect him from any dangers. So he and Buckeye (the name of the tiny twig blight) go out in to the world and have been seeking out adventures to get stronger and make the world a better place.
(I was thinking of adding something like a sickness to the forest he would like to find a remedy for, but I don't know how that will go together with Descent into Avernus. Feel free to add anything like that)
I do allow Tasha's customizing your origin rules. I have not read guildmasters guide to ravnica, but since it is official material, I am sure it is balanced. Go ahead and reskin it for a forgotten realms setting. By the way, I won't lay focus on factions outside of city level as most of the campaign will play in the titular Avernus.
I'm gonna butt in and maybe not apply (I'm joining a real life tabletop Avernus in April, or so I hope), but point out that not all official content is balanced. Two main offenders DnD Beyond gives easy access to if you paid for them:
- Acquisitions Incorporated - Mythic Odysseys of Theros
In particular, the background and heroic features of a Theros character creation will quickly outstrip all the other sourcebooks in power, as it basically gives everyone a free starting feat on top of their starting feats. So you might want to be "only races from Theros, no Theros backgrounds, no Theros piety system, no Theros Supernatural Gifts."
As for Acq Incorp, the spells are the main offenders, but they have some crap items too that will throw a "normal" game out of balance.
Arodon was born and raised in Silverymoon. He was the only child of Celerion and Nemiriel Kiirstacia. He was doted on by his parents, and had a happy childhood. As he grew older, he began to see the darker side of the world. He decided to figuratively take up the torch in Mielikki’s name and spread goodness, driving evil back and protecting innocents.
His father died when Arodon was 45, in a freak accident. His mother, an adventurer herself, was infected with werebear lycanthropy.
Alion left home shortly after. He sought out the Knights of Myth Drannor, and earned entrance into their ranks. He became close friends with another Knight, a human named Miles Brightwood, after a battle they fought side by side. He has recently come to Baldur’s Gate to try to infiltrate the Flaming Fists and stop their cruelty.

Loyalty Begets Honour
Name: Briar
Race: Human
Class: Cleric (Life)
Briar was raised in a small coastal village.
Name: Skaron
Race: Tiefling
Class: Monk (Way of Shadow)
Backstory: Skaron grew up in Brampton, the eighth child and third son of the union between his tiefling mother and father.

Brief Backstory: After generations of branching out from Drow culture, the older generations of Nym's clan had been shown by the Goddess Selune that there was a way other than following Lolth's evil ways and that they could live in the Twilight in peace. So Nym set out to earn money to help fund her clan's budding new home as well as become a positive influence on behalf of all non evil aligned Drow.

,
Name: Tupelo (Sheet)
Race: Stout Halfling
Class (including subclass if applicable): Ranger (going swarmkeeper)
Ability Scores: Point buy (see sheet)
Background: Outlander
Backstory:
Feel free to add anything like that)
I'm gonna butt in and maybe not apply (I'm joining a real life tabletop Avernus in April, or so I hope), but point out that not all official content is balanced. Two main offenders DnD Beyond gives easy access to if you paid for them:
- Acquisitions Incorporated
- Mythic Odysseys of Theros
In particular, the background and heroic features of a Theros character creation will quickly outstrip all the other sourcebooks in power, as it basically gives everyone a free starting feat on top of their starting feats. So you might want to be "only races from Theros, no Theros backgrounds, no Theros piety system, no Theros Supernatural Gifts."
As for Acq Incorp, the spells are the main offenders, but they have some crap items too that will throw a "normal" game out of balance.
Good luck with this!
Name: Arodon Staciakiir
Race: Elf (DMG Eladrin)
Class: Paladin (Going Ancients at 3rd level)
