Basic premise begins with a small crew on a riverboat plying a large, wide river. Trade, adventure, a little miss-adventure await. I am an experienced GM (DM, Narrator, whatever) with over four decades love of the genre. I ran a PBP most of last year. What I am proposing is a minimum of two postings each week and am seeking serious players with the time and interest to commit. Those who can't keep up will end up overboard and replacement crew pressed if necessary. I tend to be a bit wordy and descriptive on my part but attempt to spin a colorful world in which to have fun in.
I have already created an NPC captain who owns the boat and just need 4-5 crew to man her.
Characters should begin at level 3 or less if you prefer. Advancement will be steady, but I'm more for a balance then a Min-Max mindset. I prefer players who are not afraid to be descriptive. (Gonk hits Orc!; Gonk hits Tree! Gonk farts!) doesn't do it for me, fair warning. Mature mindset (and themes) are acceptable as long as they float with the sites rules.
Also, keep in mind that the campaign will revolve around the boat and the river, though land encounters will occur. Characters shouldn't have mounts or heavy armor (unless they have a decent chance of swimming in it for more than a few meters).
My experience: For the most part I've used 2E and 3.5E rules but did by the core 5E books last year for DnD B's expectations. I have an extensive RPG collection (WEG SW; MERP; SR; BT/MW; etc,) and have played/ran all of them. I am also a would-be writer, which helps explain my tendencies towards being descriptive and chatty with my NPCs. And my seriousness in how they are treated and conversed with. While I will be running the game in an open thread so all players may read/react/respond too, I do like using private threads to convey things PC's may see, hear, smell, etc., that the others might not. Also for using 'thoughts' and 'musings' between Narrator and PC's, as well for when the group runs off in different directions. i.e., if you split the group (or your character misses one too many posts and gets left behind), so too, will the open dialogue thread. In my world PC's need to stay reasonably close together in order to see each other's open posts.
Okay, this more or less covers my end of Session Zero. If I haven't bored you; annoyed you; horked you off; lets talk.
I've been trying to find a campaign my bard character would really fit into and this could be just it. Shayne MacGee is more of a storyteller than a musician, but he can do that as well. Through his words, his charm and of course his willingness to tell bigger and bigger lies, Shayne is part barfly, part confidence man and part chard sharp. I always envisioned him not only playing up and scamming, cheating and stealing from the locals at the pub, but also being the type to set up a stand and sell as much of Doctor Shapirizan's Magical Cure All Elixir as he could before departing town. I think this could easily segue onto a riverboat where he would have the opportunity to cheat, swingle and scam the passengers as they floated up or down river, be it at card games or other scoundrel type actions.
Of course Shayne would have an official job on the boat though not being a boat person myself I have little idea what that would be. Shayne would likely have little idea what his job was either, but he is the type of worker who works very hard at looking like he works very hard while doing next to nothing. The captain is likely fully aware of this but he keeps Shayne around anyway knowing that Shayne is pretty good at a lot of different things, handy with a sword if it comes to it, and is never so greedy as to cause the ship too much trouble. Plus, let's face it, Shayne is just so charming that everyone is happier when the dude is around.
Shayne is human, of the variant nature if allowed but not required. (Like taking Ritual Caster to get him his feline familiar FamFam who helps him cheat at cards...) but I could always dip into warlock for that too. *shrug*
I try to be more about story than battle. I of course like a good fight scene but without the story that goes with it, that's just rolling dice...
Anyway, would be interested in giving this a shot. Thanks.

We're doing one small murder-y thing for a bigger, better reason. The ends justify the means.
Previously known around as a local bouncer at several dens of iniquity, Bob got into some trouble with the owners. Perhaps it was sampling the wares. Perhaps a jilted lover. Perhaps his code of honor didn't allow him to turn a blind eye to certain goings on. The truth is a little of all. Whatever the reason, one day he found he needed to get out of town. He found job on a trade boat. Now know as Nur, he is strong and resourceful, and is trying to be vague about his background and in general keep his head down. He carries a couple throwing knifes and daggers, but prefers to use his fists, and resorts to them first. grappling being something he learned as a bodyguard and bouncer.
Sounds promising! Here's a character concept that I've been wanting to try out:
Zeno Lorasys was a love child between her elven mother and a human wizard.
Her mother, Talila Korianthil, was a talented elven wizard of the Beaconstwain college, who married one of the college deans - Cathbar Lorasys. Talila, however, was a dreamer and an idealist, who was never happy to be confined long to the college halls. She preferred to wander the forests, recording what she saw in drawing and writing. On many occasions she encountered the Moon Druids of the forest. Of this elusive community, she befriended an individual named Jaromir who grew to admire her reverence for nature.
Talila and Cathbar had a son named Espen, who inherited all of the magical prowess of his parents and quickly ascended the ranks of the college to become a professor himself. Espen, however, was embarrassed by his mother’s wanderings and love of the world outside of the college. Pride in his son led Cathbar to share these views. Talila found herself increasingly mocked by and alienated from her husband and son.
Knowing that she would find little support or comfort among the elven community, Tshe confided in a professor from the human college while visiting. This professor’s name was Etgar Grayrock, who had long been besotted by Talila’s beauty and endearing love of the natural world. Later, Talila found herself with child. When a girl was born, it was impossible to hide the fact that she was a half-blood. When Cathbar learned of this, Cathbar and Espen told Talila that she had one only option: they would use magic to make it seem as though Talila had died during childbirth and that the child had not survived either. Talila would remain ensconced within Cathbar’s tower, never to leave again.
Heartbroken but unable to resist her husband’s will, Talila confined herself to an annex of the tower. She named her half-blood daughter Zeno, and raised her on the drawings and stories she had written about the forest and the moon druids. It was clear that Zeno, like Espen, had the intellect and sharpness of her parents and had every promise of being a great wizard. But because of her half-elf nature, the Beaconstwain college would never accept her. So Zeno would sneak out the tower and learn from Jaromir. She used the magics Jaromir taught her to transform herself into a cat - or whatever other animal suited the occasion - to gain access to food or gold in order to live. And not just for herself, but she also brought gold pieces and trinkets to her mother to supplement the paltry rations Cathbar provided to his hidden wife.
Then one day, Cathbar came to Talila and demanded to know where Zeno was. It turned out that Etgar Grayrock had learned by divination magic that he had a daughter who was still alive, and was demanding to have custody of her. Talila was forced to admit that Zeno had not been living in the tower for a long time. Cathbar was truly furious this time, and declared his regret that her public death had only been fake - but that this was something he would rectify. He then delivered the news to Etgar that if his daughter was alive, he had no knowledge of where she was.
Zeno learned all of this the next time she came to visit, by entering her mother’s chamber in cat form, and then following Cathbar until she pieced together what had happened. From that day on, she no longer had any reason to visit the tower anymore. Her pain was tempered by Jaromir and the druid’s teachings. Jaromir encouraged her to see the path of her life not as a tragedy, but as an opportunity to be free of what else might have been. And when Zeno read her mother’s poems and saw her drawings, she realised this was true: Talila would have been glad to know that her daughter would never be confined to the stale walls of the college.
Dekket Karcrowhas been a thief and a scoundrel his whole life, but beign an orphan tiefling in a big city left few opportunities to him, sohe had to get what he could of it. Raised in the docks, it wasn't .long before he found himself as a grummet in the Shark's Fin, a vessel of doubitous reputation as corsairs. Amogn t he crew he found what he never had, a family. Years passed by and he grew a reputation of a scoundrel both among the waves and in the city. His lasst heist, lifting the winnings of a gambling house was a little too much for the local mob boss and the fact that he slept with her daughter didn't help Dekket's case.
With a bounty on his head, he and the Captain of the Fin decided that a change of landscape could be the best for his safety and those aboard the Shark's Fin so he went inland, up to the river and he is looking for a job in one of the ships that sail the great river, just until the things calm down back at home.
I have an idea for a four elements monk, that always seems like such a cool subclass for RP.
I’d like to play a character who looks to explore ley lines in the world, viewing them as the planet’s own rivers of Ki. The river is one of these places, or is taking him to one of these places. He’s nearly a trope, enjoying classic enlightenment techniques, meditating under waterfalls, on mountaintops, walking across hot coals, tea, etc.
If you’re looking for descriptive, I can do that, but I don’t really care for inner monologue or for posting something lengthy for the sake of posting. So sometimes, it’s a short post, sometimes it’s long- whatever is appropriate to an organic response at the time. If you aren’t sure if this will meet what you’re looking for, I’m okay with being passed by. I’ve been running a pbp on discord for more than a year, and I’ve got two more getting going. I’ve played in quite a few pbp games. I don’t like getting bogged down in room by room exploration attrition, but I do like exploring homebrew settings.
Question: How will you handle a Wild Magic Sorcerer? I have a character I wanted to play for some time that has the subclass as an important part of it, but it's problematic since the subclass is so dependant on the DM and some people just simply ban it from their games for... multiple reasons. So, unless I know the subclass is both allowed and has a good chance to trigger its effects frequently enough (It doesn't have to be too much, but I've seen people complain that their DM would have it trigger only once per long rest... if at all).
The character concept, though not the most original, that I know is more or less this: A sorceress who had just found out about her magical abilities and uses this opportunity to finally set out to explore the world, as pretty much any child would dream to. She would take the first opportunity to go out - which would be on the ship. She knows practically nothing, so a level 1 character, and tries really hard to prove herself even though everyone around will probably be better at all the things (due to the most likely scenario of her being the only 1st level character). The others let her stay on the ship mostly out of pity/because her failures make them laugh. Of course, there could be more depth to it, but that's the basics of the character.
If there's still room, I'd love to play a character with the Chef feat as the riverboat's cook (morale officer?). Depends on setting, feel, size of boat and so on, but it might be a lovely opportunity for the return of a character from a defunct pbp, "Sweet" James Arkanan.
Background: Drestoni has three loves, traveling, meeting new people, and fixing things. He offers up his services any where he goes as a security and maintenance specialist. His past isn't tragic, he wasn't an orphan (quite the opposite he had both parents and 4 siblings), nor was he driven from his home by some strange curse or plague. His mind is just insatiable and staying in one place gets boring.
Personality: Cheerful, eager to help, and creative would be the three ways to describe Drestoni. He enjoys a good laugh, good food with friends, meeting new people, sketching, and just generally being helpful. He's the first one to volunteer to help, and the last one to shy away from solving a problem.
Journey Entry 2) I am still shaking down to my bones an' am at a loss to understand wha' happened. We'd only jus' tied up to tha' docks at Deserianport when the Easy Drift was overrun by a gang o' thugs an' ruffians wearing black leathers. I was in tha hold checkin' on tha cargo. Mostly sacks o' seed meant for a local farmer's hall but Pa always takes on o' bit of this an' o' bit that to turn some extra coin. It was Old Darrak's bellow that first told me somethin' was wrong above. An if Pa's oldest and most solid lad's demands of 'Who are ya an' what do ya want you slugs!? wasn't enough the clamor and stampede of dozens of hard boots hammering on the deck above was. Someone let out the shriek of the mortally wounded, then there was a splash close to the hull. It shames me to admit tha' I froze; shivering in my sandals. Threats and shouts mingled with the screech of steel on steel but it was Pa's cry, "Kiri!" that broke me out o' me shakes. And I know, I KNOW, tha' Pa was warning me ta' stay put, but I couldn't. Grabbin' a nearby gaff, I rushed for the steps to the deck. Just before I reached 'em a body tumbled down. Twas Crazy Jigger, tha' Cat man. Gutted an spitting blood, Jigger reached for me - no, he was tryin' to push me back; to keep me from the deck. One pointed ear half torn off in a bar fight in Gabber's Down, the other angled at the increasing fury above. He tried; Goddess of Wood and River, he tried to speak but went slack. His eyes, one grey, one yellow lost their spark. Above the fighting died down. I'll admit, I ain't been in many scraps o' steel an' blood, but they never last as long as tha' Bard's like to tell. It was as if the shades of death felt cheated as I felt their cold, iron fingers around me throat. But tha' too, was merely a whisper o' some fireside tale. It coldn't breath because I knew, knew in me heart o' hearts tha Pa an Darrrak an' everyone else above were dead; gone. My throat was raw; me eyes blinded...but no, not all were dead. Boots on tha' deck above said so. They stopped just out o' view above the steps. The silence felt like forever, tha' I saw a blood splattered hide boot step onto tha' first step. Somethin', some instinct, maybe tha Goddesses caring hand, but I eased 'tween tha stacks o' seed. "Think small; be small," my ma liked to tell me when she was teachin' me tha way o' the woods. Another boot appeared, an I heard 'em descended. There were voices, but in me' funk, I couldn't hear 'em. They were searching for somethin', somethin' powerful or wonderful or expensive. Somethin' Pa had agreed ta' deliver to someone; someone important...
Tha' was days ago. Easy Drift is still tied up to tha' warf an' several too-talls 'ave approached, offerin' to buy her cheap. Eyes are watching her, an' me...I can feel them. Tha killers o' Pa didn't seem to find wha' they expected too. They also didn' ransack the hold or wreck the boat. They left an' now, ever sense, eyes be watchin'. I need o' crew, quick. But who ta trust? Who ta tell...
I am new to play by post but want to experience it since I have my own online group that meets infrequently. I dont have a specific character in mind, but would like to tailor them to the setting and story. Please let me know if you are interested (willing to allow me to join) - not entirely sure how this all works just yet. Cheers.
Riding down a river seems like it could be a fun place to play a less traditional race like a grung. Maybe even for fun they wouldn't actually start with the group, but is a stow away just after they depart from town.
They don't technically start with Common as a language, but it'd be easy enough to pick it up with a background, and that could explain how their Common is less fluent than the rest of the group. This could also make for some fun culture ‘difficulties’ as they travel together. But they’d likely be good at surviving on the river.
Just a concept atm, but it’d be really fun to flesh out :)
I've had some experience playing D&D, mostly in person, but I've had a fair amount of experience in online roleplays. Which D&D 5e books do you have access to? Is there anything you'd want players to maybe avoid, or is anything published fair game?
I've been thinking of a possible character concept for a bit now, a tabaxi warlock with a Fathomless patron. Gold Luck Silent Wilds, or Luck, has been fascinated with stories and knowledge of what can be found in the different water bodies of the world, from rivers to seas to underground lakes. Almost as soon as he could take off into the world, Luck did so to see what he could find and experience for himself; however, a couple different incidents led him to start feeling uncomfortable around water. This almost matched his drive for more knowledge, and it gave him a reason to look for any items or power that could help him survive in water.
Eventually, Luck found a map and note that led him to a deep pool of water, which in short led him to an ancient water elemental. I haven't had enough time to figure out what kind of relationship or pact Luck and the elemental would have, other than possibly that Luck has to travel and possibly live on waterways as part of his end of the pact. I'm thinking Luck would be Lvl 3 by the time he meets this captain, so he's had time to build up some reputation as a reliable crew member and possibly water guide of some kind. If I were to be part of this game, I'd like to talk about the pact boon that comes to warlocks at lvl 3.
A scruffy, wild-haired hill dwarf dressed all in leather -- repeatedly patched, from a variety of sources -- appears on the dock. His hat appears to be made from most of a small badger. He's smoking a handrolled cigar. "I'm Root. Got room for another?"
(Druid; Circle of the Shepherd. Wandered away from his hill clan, the Stonehands, because he was more interested in nature than in mining. Laconic, with people at least.)
OOC: You have my interest, I’d like to play a Human Arcane Archer.
An average looking human with a longbow over his shoulder approaches the boat, “Ahoy, my name is Joranth and I’d like to trade passage on your boat to where ever you heading for a pair of hands willing to work and a decent shot with a bow. Is that something you’d be interested in?”
Nur walks towards the docks, furtively glancing in every direction, with a hood down low over his head. He's looking for a boat. For a way out...
Avoiding any guards, he heads down to a likely candidate...."If you need work, I am your man. I'm strong and loyal, and am ready now, in fact the sooner the better."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Praise the glory of fire, I would take it as a kindness if you would be lettin me onto this here raft."
An attractive woman with a few years on her, holds out her hand and gives you a firm shake. "Addison Bennet, and you are?" You can tell from her practical dress that she isn't afraid of hard work and the symbol on her satchel speaks of some religious holdings. "I'm a little new in town. You think you can show a lady where she can rest her legs?" Easy going with an air of confidence, Ms. Bennet relates to you that she was once widowed, her late husband (bless his soul) was eaten by something out of nightmares. Through the faith of Moradin (or other god from your campaign) she was able to fend off the miscreant dead and smash in its head with her husband's hammer. She was accused and found guilty of double homicide, spending a good 7 years in the slammer. But she never lost faith. She kept up her prayers and took up the hammer in the prison shop. Got out early on account of good behavior. She's looking for a new place to park her wagon, and maybe do some good.
Well, I have some openings do mostly to difference of opinion and my bad habit of falling back on 3.5 rules. Though, for my part, I try hard to be story first and rules second. If anyone is interested, flexible, and a bit understanding, give me a shout.
Hi! I've been looking for a PbP and this sounds great. Most of my D&D background was playing 3.5 so I have no issue with you using rules from that. I am willing to play whatever character type would fit in with or fill out the party otherwise I like playing fighters and rogues. I work from home so it's easy for me to keep up on posting. Here is one of my characters.
Race: High Elf
Class: Fighter (Arcane Archer)
Background:
Sydril never speaks of her past. It is her burden to bear alone. Sydril’s mother was able to send her to the Ethereal Plane before the demons found them but she saw the torture and annihilation of her entire village. When the spell ended she was cast back to the material plane amid death and destruction. Sydril made her way to her grandparents in a different village. She was 30 years old, she is now 70 but the nightmares are still there, waiting for her. She learned archery from her grandfather and poetry from her grandmother. These two things help keep her grounded and stave off the memories. She travels the land in search of ways to put her troubles aside for a time. Helping people is one of the best ways she has found to do so.
Thanks for your consideration.

I’ve played in quite a few pbp games. I don’t like getting bogged down in room by room exploration attrition, but I do like exploring homebrew settings.

Sounds very interesting, do you have any information about the setting? And am I correct in believing there is no PvP element?

PbP 🎲: Tyekanik; Moneo Noree; Korba Muris; & occasional DM:

Roy Quigley - Human Artificer (1) - Karrion's Spelljammer Academy Starboard
Nur
Nur walks towards the docks, furtively glancing in every direction, with a hood down low over his head. He's looking for a boat. For a way out...
Avoiding any guards, he heads down to a likely candidate...."If you need work, I am your man. I'm strong and loyal, and am ready now, in fact the sooner the better."
