Welcome to Drowning Greed! I am looking for 4-6 adventurers to participate in a homebrew adventure set in Ravenloft. This adventure will focus on gritty horror and tough moral decisions, and I will be accepting characters with evil or neutral alignments. This is not an adventure for heroes. If you are interested, please read the following house rules and character creation guidelines.
Adventure Background: You have joined a whaling expedition setting out from the fishing village of Passwater on the coast of Mordent. The expedition, led by Captain Jean Luc-Pierre, will venture into the heart of the Sea of Sorrows.
House Rules: We will be using the optional Sanity, Fear, Horror, and Madness rules found in the DMG. Combat will be casual.
Character Creation: PHB, DMG, and XGE content only. Note: the half-orc race is replaced with the caliban race, which is mechanically identical but more appropriate to the setting. Characters will begin at 3rd level, milestone advancement, point buy ability scores (remember to allocate points to the Sanity ability, and that you have 3 additional points to spend for a grand total of 30). Ravenloft is predominantly populated by humans, and other races are very uncommon. For this reason, I will be more likely to select a human character for the party than a nonhuman. Please fill out the following character application.

Race (Subrace)
Class (Subclass)

Backstory (This can be as brief or as descriptive as you wish.)
What is your character's greatest vice?
What is your character's greatest fear?
Where does your character call home? (This can be either a location in Ravenloft or on another plane, provided you include a suitable explanation in your backstory.)
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM?
Nolla has worked on and off as a dancer, singer, or whatever else she could do to make ends meat over the years. She has served as a scout, as well as in other capacities, for city militias, town guards, and even bandit organizations. Pretty much whatever she needed to do to get by she did, which is about the only reason she has lived as long as she has.
Nolla is a collector of knowledge. Most of her jobs are done for information, or to get some rare tome. She collects information for its sake alone, though she would sell pieces of that if it were to get her yet more secrets. She follows Oghma, god of knowledge, and offers prayers up to him often. (Or some other god of secrets and/or knowledge.)
Recently she has come into possession of a weird black crystal, that has linked itself to her, mind-to-mind. The crystal tells her many things, most of which she is unable to understand, while some have given her insights she would not have had before. The being behind the crystal has told her that keeping the crystal itself is no longer needed, but she wears it on a pendant around her neck all the same. (For later multiclass into Warlock.)
What is your character's greatest vice? Hording of information and secrets.
What is your character's greatest fear? Forgetting things.
Where does your character call home? Borovia
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? I have played the beginning of COS a couple different times, but have not gotten past the very beginning as of yet. I am in a COS game now as well, another try to get further along.
This seems to be something I would love to play! I will write up a character soon
Name: Vincent Runebell
Race: Human
Class (Subclass): Wild magic Sorcerer
Background: Pirate
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Backstory: Growing up in Baytown did not make it easy to live an honest life, especially when Vincent didn’t want to. As soon as he was old enough, he joined a crew and began his career of high sea robbery. He spent years learning how to sail, and learning to talk his way out of trouble because he could never really master weapons. But just as he was making his way up in the pirate world, fate just had to throw a curve ball at him, and granted him magic powers that seem to just explode out of him sometimes. This obviously scared his crew mates, and after one occasion where he, accidentally, struck a few of his crew members with bolts of lighting, they made him leave the crew. After being kicked off his ship, he joined a Captain Jean-Luc Pierre on a whaling expedition to make some money while he figured out his next move.
What is your character's greatest vice? Greed, if anyone offers him gold, he’ll do almost anything, bar betraying his companions. Unless, of course, it was a LOT of gold
What is your character's greatest fear? Losing his wealth, and seeing all he had worked for slipping from his fingers
Where does your character call home? Baytown, on the Isle of Agony in Lamordia
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? I’ve only played through a bit of CoS, so little to none
Backstory: The secret daughter of The Abbot, a disguised angel living in the Abbey of St. Markovia in Krezk, Nylia Vask learned to distrust from a young age. Count Strahd von Zarovich sent spies to keep eyes on the young girl when he heard of her celestial heritage. She distrusted the vampire and anything associated with him. When Nylia learned that her own father was attempting to appease Strahd rather than kill him, she severed all ties to The Abbot and ran, seeing enemies everywhere. To this day, she confides only in The Morninglord and in Saint Markovia, who she prays to daily for guidance. She hopes to destroy Strahd and anyone else who had ever helped him, including her father.
Greatest Vice: Doubt in others. Nylia gives little chances to trust others, and never gives second chances.
Greatest Fear: Being controlled, whether through a spell or through trickery, against her will.
Homeland: Krezk, Barovia
Personal Experience with Ravenloft: I've played Curse of Strahd, and have also guest-played Strahd von Zarovich himself in one of my friends' campaigns.
I'm quite intrigued with this! This will be my first time in a Ravenloft campaign, so I would love to join!
Character name-Yi'trov Dimolekh
Race- Half—Elf
Class- Oath of Devotion Paladin 3
Background- Guild Artisan
Alignment- Lawful Neutral
Backstory: ((A bit long and broken up so I'll put it in the spoiler tag))
Yi'trov Dimolekh was born in a wealthy high-elven household in waterdeep. His mother was Mirea Dimolekh, his elven bloodline, and his father was Dirron Almolon, his human bloodline. Both parents had Yi'trov pursue the crafts of the forge, and let him grow accustomed to the molten metal and furnaces.
His parents were rather pushing at first, but eventually settled to caring for what he wished. They showed a fond nature to taking care of their only son, and had him as the heir of the family estate and manor once his parents passed.
Dimolekh found his way to being recommended in a forge guild that held Gond, the god of smiths and knowledge. He was quickly accepted and regarded well for his versatile work, making a fine-elven crossguard for a greatsword project he had in mind. His life was quite lavish, enjoying the finer detail of life, but he had the need to learn more and explore the world's ripe fruit of knowledge.
However, on a day uncertain, he left home for an errand to buy materials when he stumbled upon a ruffian that was harassing a woman in a dim alleyway. He brought out a mace of his making, and struck the figures. Unknowing to him only after, had he severely-wounded the woman and only injured the ruffian's left leg.
To his dismay and disappointment, he called for a cleric while tending as much as he could to the woman before running to his family whilst crying. He was comforted, but he could not bear the weight of his actions. He came back to the guild to finish the beautiful and ornate-design of an elven greatsword, and took upon his inventions and contributions to the guild.
He made an oath to Gond to wander Faerun in hopes of redeeming his action, as well as aiding innovators and inventors along his adventure. His parent's had waved goodbye to him, giving him what he needed before the exploration. He set off to the church of Gond in waterdeep, making the oath while pledging himself to Gond. Given the title of a paladin, he set off from Waterdeep in a journey of self-redemption and courtesy of helping others.
He eventually came upon the village of passwater after many a passage of aiding inventors and harrowing journeys that enlighten his mind with knowledge, yet in need of gold, he takes the opportunity to take part on a whaling expedition led by Captain Jean-luc Pierre, unknowing of what will come next...
His greatest vice - He is quite immoral when it comes to sacrifice, not thinking of the repercussions and would instead do what must be necessary and never what is emotionally right.
His greatest fear - Losing their ability to redeem themself for their actions, and losing his guild's trust in his ability to carry on.
Homeland - Waterdeep
Personal Experience with Ravenloft - I have no idea what Ravenloft even is! As such, I would love to experience this as blind as I am to know the setting in better detail.

Character's appearance -
A man clad in chain-mail, human design, with a tint of ornate-elven decoration. A 6'4" tall figure with noble traveler's garb, although coloured in a variety of green, yellow, and royal blue colours, it is quite comfortable to see in the eyes. They wear smooth linen pants, and carry a cured-leather backpack. On their neck is a holy emblem of Gond, an intermediate god of the forge and knowledge domains.
Backstory (This can be as brief or as descriptive as you wish.): Need time to think about something that will fit the setting
What is your character's greatest vice? Conning people out of what he can
What is your character's greatest fear? The truth (or more specifically, what the truth makes him lose)
Where does your character call home? (This can be either a location in Ravenloft or on another plane, provided you include a suitable explanation in your backstory.) See next answer. It’s better for us to work together on this
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? I have basically no experience.
I own Curse of Strahd, and have read it. That is all the experience I have with it.
If the Blood Hunter doesn't work, this is my second choice of a character:
Name: Torthiel Eversharp
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Land Druid
Background: Haunted One
Alignment: Neutral
Backstory: Growing up in the Barren Hills was a simple life, my clan mined, dug quarries, made tools, weapons, and armor. When I was 34, a portal opened up to the Shadowfell in the heart of my clan's stronghold. When I saw it appear, and the dragon kill my friends and family, I fled into the portal trying to escape destruction, little did I know, that death is a better fate than getting lost in the Shadowfell. After years of wandering through the Shadowfell, I came across the Mists of Barovia, and got stuck in Ravenloft.
Vice: I love carnal pleasures, it is the only "good" feeling in the Shadowfell.
Fear: I fear the fate of my soul.
My Home: Nowhere. The Mines of the Barren Hills were my home, but they are long gone. I have lived in the Shadowfell for much longer than I lived in my homeland, but they cannot be called a true home.
I will occasionally ask for a Horror check (which will usually be a Wisdom save). If a player fails the save, they will suffer a short-term, long-term, or indefinite madness effect from the madness table in the DMG, depending on the circumstances. In some cases, this will detract points from your sanity score.
Think of your sanity score as a second set of hit points. If your character hits 0 sanity points, they will be driven insane and you will have to create a new character if you want to continue the adventure.
During character creation, your sanity score acts as a seventh ability score. You have 3 extra points to allocate to it during the point buy process, for a grand total of 30 across all ability scores.
Backstory: Unwanted and considered a sign of evil by most folk, Skulk learned early in life that no domain would ever truly welcome him. His childhood took place in Hazlan, where his suffering and terror-stricken mother gave birth to him. Skulk has some memories of the place--none of them good, however. Seeing that seafarers were a bit more accepting of society's cast-offs, Skulk joined the crew of a cargo vessel as soon as we was able to do so. He's known no other life since.
What is your character's greatest vice? Strong drink
What is your character's greatest fear? Succumbing to the same fate that befell his mentally unsound mother, who, by the time she birthed him, could do little more than gibber and weep
Where does your character call home? Having never felt that a true home exists for him, Skulk considers the sea, and any ship that will grant him a place among the crew, his home.
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM?No experience as a player or DM. Yet.
Backstory Benny was born an orphan, no one knowing who his father was and his mother dying while giving birth to him. He left the orphanage as soon as it became apparent he would never find a family, and became apprenticed on a ship at a young age, hoping to one day strike it rich. Years later as an experienced sailor he has had better luck in tavern brawls whenever at shore than finding treasure.
What is your character's greatest vice? Greed
What is your character's greatest fear? Death
Where does your character call home? Any ship that'll take him.
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? None.
This thread is now closed. Thank you to everyone who expressed interest. I really appreciate the time and effort that went into these characters. I'll select the party and contact the players who have been chosen within the next hour.
This application is based on the hope that the shadar-kai subrace of elves from MToF would be allowed.
Name: Savion Donnadel
Race: Elf (Shadar-kai)
Class: Do you view the Raven Queen as a god or more akin to an archfey? If god: Paladin (Oathbreaker, if allowed. Not because he broke his oath, but because those features best fit the concept of being sworn to the Raven Queen. Otherwise, Oath of Vengeance.). If archfey: Warlock (Archfey). I can go either way.
Background: Soldier (Paladin) or Charlatan (Warlock)
Alignment: LN
Backstory: The Raven Queen is aware of Ravenloft and wants all the lost lost souls trapped therein for herself. She has sent out some of her shadar-kai to find Ravenloft and to set its deceased free, so she can take them.
Greatest Vice: Disgust at the emotions of others
Greatest Fear: Disappointing the Raven Queen, though, her will is enigmatic, at best.
Home: the Shadowfell
Experience with Ravenloft: I am currently running Curse of Strahd as DM for my friends. In my version, however, the dusk elves are shadar-kai instead of wood elves. The Raven Queen had sent them to Barovia to bear witness to an impending tragedy, not realizing that the tragedy would trap them there.
If shadar-kai is not allowed, I would still go for dusk elf (aka wood elf).

Are Blood Hunters allowed?
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
@LeviRocks seeing as PoorTom said it should only be within the PHb, DMG and XGtE sourcebooks, Blood hunters are probably not allowed.
A question I have though, @PoorTom, how will the sanity system work? And how will the save proficiencies with sanity come to as well?
That's what I assumed, but they fit the theme of Ravenloft so well I just wanted to double check.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Name: Alexander Oxford
Race (Subrace): Human (Variant)
Class (Subclass): Monk (Way of the Long Death)

What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? I have basically no experience.
This is the Blood Hunter character, if it is allowed:
Name: Oritieth Xistsrith
Race: High Elf
Class: Blood Hunter (Ghostslayer)
Background: Haunted One
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Backstory: I am from the woods of the Vordorn Forest, where I was taught by my parents ways to slay and ward off ghosts.
Greatest Vice: I will slay anyone who doesn't match up with my moral code, within reason.
Greatest Fear: Corporeal Undead, zombies, skeletons, liches, vampires.
Home: Vordorn Forest in the North Eastern Faerun
Ability Scores for Blood Hunter: 10 17 14 16 10 8 (14 Sanity
Ability Scores for Land Druid: 10 9 17 12 16 12 (13 Sanity)
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
Blood Hunters are consistent with the theme of Ravenloft, so I have no problem including one in the party.
@PoorTom how will the sanity system and saving throw for it work?
This intrigues me.
If you don’t put any points in sanity, is it at the default 8?
Name Benny
Race (Subrace) Human
Class (Subclass) Fighter
Background Sailor
Alignment Chaotic Neutral
Backstory Benny was born an orphan, no one knowing who his father was and his mother dying while giving birth to him. He left the orphanage as soon as it became apparent he would never find a family, and became apprenticed on a ship at a young age, hoping to one day strike it rich. Years later as an experienced sailor he has had better luck in tavern brawls whenever at shore than finding treasure.
What is your character's greatest vice? Greed
What is your character's greatest fear? Death
Where does your character call home? Any ship that'll take him.
What is your personal experience with the Ravenloft setting as a player or DM? None.
How's this?
Yes, same as any other ability score. On very rare occasions I might call for a Sanity check, but this might not ever come up in gameplay.
This thread is now closed. Thank you to everyone who expressed interest. I really appreciate the time and effort that went into these characters. I'll select the party and contact the players who have been chosen within the next hour.
