Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, a veritable nest of rats and vipers clinging to the rocky slopes overlooking the Chionthar River. From their high perches in the Upper City, the local nobles — known as patriars — gaze down with veiled contempt upon the common rabble in the grimy Lower City, which hugs the foggy harbor. The whole of Baldur’s Gate reeks of blood, crime, and opportunity. One can easily fathom why pirates and traders are drawn to this place like flies to a carcass.
Following the river farther east would eventually lead you to Elturel, capital of the holy land of Elturgard — or at least that was the case until a few days ago. The flood of refugees from Elturel has gotten worse since news first arrived that the city has fallen. Everyone is saying Baldur’s Gate is next, but no one truly knows who or what has claimed Elturel.
The patriars pay a mercenary army called the Flaming Fist to protect their interests in Baldur’s Gate, and by extension, the city itself. The Flaming Fist has gained even more power since their charismatic leader, Ulder Ravengard, claimed the title of Grand Duke a few years ago. Apparently, Ravengard is missing. In his absence, the Flaming Fist has sealed the city’s gates to staunch the flow of refugees. No one is allowed in or out.
All of this was brought to your attention shortly after you were drafted by the Flaming Fist to help defend the city.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Before we begin the adventure proper, let’s practice the dice roller. (It doesn't work sometimes on mobile.)
On the bar at the top of the comment box, if you follow it all the way to the right, you'll see a button with a die showing the number three. To insert a dice roll where your cursor is in the comment box, first click on this button
Here is how the options work: I'm attacking a goblin with my longbow, (my dexterity modifier is two.) So what I want to do is open up the dice roller, pick the number of dice I want to roll (A D20 for my attack roll.) I add my proficiency bonus, (two) and my dex mod (two) for a total of 4. So I would add four in the "ADD TO RESULT" box. Finally, I have advantage because the goblin doesn't know I'm there, so I use the pulldown menu and click "advantage". When I press roll, the code for the roll is automatically added to the comment box. Next, we add in the damage roll (we will roll both attack and damage at the same time to save time) To add the damage roll, I click on the dice button again and roll a d8 (the damage die for a long bow) and add two because of my dex modifier. Here is what it should look like:
[Great. It looks like most of you have the dice rolling down. I will be using these square brackets for any out of character communications. You can do the same]
Your orders from the Flaming Fist are to speak to Captain Zodge at the Basilisk Gate, which pierces the city’s eastern wall and takes its name from the various statues that rest in its niches and perch atop its battlements. Unseen beyond the sealed Basilisk Gate, a dirt road stretches through the Outer City slums to the bridge known as Wyrm’s Crossing, then to distant realms beyond.
We meet our group of characters as they approach the Basilisk Gate. Dozens of Flaming Fist soldiers are trying to control an angry mob of commoners eager to leave the city. Armed with only a vague description of Captain Zodge — a tall man with long black hair and a leather eye patch — it takes you a while to find him. A fight breaks out between soldiers and commoners, and you finally spot the one-eyed captain as he wades into the fray and begins throwing punches. Just another day in the City of Blood.
[Let’s have everybody give their character’s name and describe how their character looks in this moment as the fight breaks out.]
Filvendor: A male elf, 6' 1", with short white hair, light skin, and green eyes, wearing well-worn leather armor with a mace, light-crossbow, and shield at his side. Somewhat apprehensive, surveying situation.
The ruckus grabs the attention of Macawi Galu. Her bright yellow eyes with beady black irises dart to the group. Her head slightly raises higher from her black shell with light yellow bands extending from the center of her shell on her back. The design makes it look a burst of sunlight emitting from the center of her shell. The skin stretched along her neck showing a grayish and sinewy skin. The cuts in the breast plates in her shell show that she has been in plenty of fights and is not afraid to join the fray if need be. She brandishes her shield but leaves the morning star attached to her side thinking getting information first is the best bet.
Through the chaos you spot a large man with short dark hair shout, “You can’t keep us locked in here!” Then the gauntleted hand of a Flaming Fist solder appears above the crowd and brings a short wooden club down onto the man’s head. The dark-haired man collapses to the ground. Screams erupt from the crowd, and some of the commoners begin to flee. An irate woman at the edge of the crowd yells “We have family in the Outer City!”
You see dark violet tiefling step out of a cart, his ram-like horns scraping against the wooden frame. He clutches a bag close to his chest as he slings the strap over his shoulder. You can just make out the ends of scrolls and pieces of parchment poking out of the bag. The tiefling presses square-framed glasses up the ridge of his nose as he surveys the scene, watching as a few of the simpler-minded folk surrounding him back up.
Ourick Brightfeather: 5ft tall Aarakocra, White feathers with red highlights, with the flag of the Flaming Fist attached to a spear on his back. Ourick is use to this kind of action, so he watches with half interest, mostly looking for a greater foe to confront if the situation worsens.
As the group gets closer to the Basilisk gate, the mob is nearly dispersed. The man who took the club blow to the head is laying on the ground, muttering and clutching his blood-soaked hair. Two flaming first solders grab his feet and begin to drag him away. Twenty feet away, one of the Flaming Fist shoves a fleeing mob participant against a wall, grabs the man’s coin pouch and gives him a kick.
None of the brutality that you have witnessed surprises you. Flaming Fist captains have tremendous latitude when it comes to keeping the peace in Baldur’s Gate, especially in the Lower City.
Captain Zodge looks up from wiping the blood off his gauntlet and sees you all approach. In a stern voice he demands, “What is your business here?”
You have seen Zodge before when you served officially with the Flaming Fist. He might even recognize you since Aarakocra are rare among the Flaming fist. You know his reputation for being brutal and power hungry. Although, you have heard that he is fair to and mostly liked by his men.

That roll looks good!
Im not seeing dice anywhere. I am at the hospital with Esmy she was having heart palpitations

Journey says in a timid voice, “I’m just looking to help the common man, and expand the knowledge of my magic.”
