As you depart from Durgan's Rest in the comfort of the river ferry it begins to snow. Despite it being cold, it is quite pleasant. On the left are the Kelder mountains, a bony back stretching out of the plains. You can see why they call this range the backbone of Ghelspad. On your right is a beautiful old growth forest. moss and vines cling to the tall trees, and shrubs and grasses thrive in their shade.
There are several other travelers on the ferry with you, and even a bar, although with a limited supply of drink.
1. A Male Human Merchant, he has blonde hair and dark hazel eyes, and a sharp nose. He wears plain clothing and several pouches hang from his belt. 2. A Male Dwarf Peasant, He is tall, with cropped golden hair and light blue eyes. He wears modest garments and riding boots. 3. A Male Human Soldier, he is beastly in appearance, with thick copper hair and green eyes. He wears studded leather and wields a short sword and shield.
Falling into familiar patterns, Kendrick helps out around the ship as needed, even eagerly taking his shift at the oars. He catches himself a few times about to give orders, but manages to recall he is a passenger, not an officer on this ship.
In between tasks, Kendrick asks Bilick, “So what is it about the city that disturbs you?”
Travel by water was not necessarily new to him, but never had he been able to have a drink in hand while doing so. This was marvelous. He orders a 2 drinks and gives the bartender enough to cover a round for his new friends also. Taking both mugs he walks past Kendrick and the other "drink friends" he says, pointing to the bar and grinning "for you". He takes the second mug to the dwarven peasant.
Thrusting the mug into the peasants hand he begins asking question in dwarven
Hail friend. What brings you to this river boat? Are you headed home? We're on our way to Bridged City. How are things there? Any thing we should be careful of? Drink up. Our brother over there seems to be quite nervous about returning.
The questions keep coming. It's as if Osso is just glad to be able to talk to someone in his native tongue.
(Let me know how much the round of drink is so I can adjust my GP)
Balos is a bit more green around the gills than he usually is as he avoids the outer edge of the deck. " 'Ad teh be a feckin' boat." He grumbles in orkish as he bundles up under his traveling gear as best he can. Seeing Osso with booze Balos decides to partake to keep his mind off the travel. He scoops up an ale and a seat near the middle of the bar. Looking around he notices Tella trying to stay warm. "A nice mulled wine could 'elp wit' ya chill." He utters in draconic.
Bilick stands on the deck of the ship as Kendrick speaks to him and after the human finishes speaking the dwarf bursts in an angry torrent of words.
"It's so...unnatural. The way they carved the buildings into the mountain and covered the entire bloody thing with bridges. It's a city that shouldn't exist." He is quiet for a moment, then adds, "I grew up, there, lad. One of mebbe a dozen dwarves in the entire city. Me dad was brought in as an engineer to help build some o' the newer bridges, but the old man died in a construction accident. Ma threw herself off one of the bridges soon after. And I was alone, in a city with none of my own people. When I left, I swore I'd never come back."
The dwarf wipes a tear from his eye, then grins brusquely. "And what about ye? Yer pretty comfortable on a boat -- much more so than the serpent lass, or the half-orc boy. Seems like ye get some experience in that area."
Still sweating even in the cold from his exertions, Kendrick gratefully accepts a beverage and says, "Thank you Osso," and sits down to take a break as Bilick starts his story. Looking sadly at the druid, he answers, "A sad tale indeed, and yet you return with us to hopefully do some good." Thinking about his own past, Kendrick gets a wistful look in his eye, taking a few pulls on his ale while he talks...."As for me, well, I went to sea early in life, and have been either sailing the seas or touring the port cities ever since I could grow hair on my chin. Lately I was sailing as first mate on the Razor's Kiss, a well-armed merchant vessel--or at least it was until the mutiny and the crew decided to turn to piracy. After a long walk off a short plank, I swam for a long time with only the clothes on my back and my longspear. Wandering inland, Durgan's Rest was the first civilization I came across. I was in the market, just trying to figure out what to do to earn some coin when the tower exploded."

"Thank you for the drink my friend. I'm Bali." The dwarf says. "Durgan Rest is my home, but I am heading to the Bridged City to learn more about the practical application of magic at the Academy of Magic and Sciences in the Bridged City. It's been my life long dream to study under a wizard. I've never been to the Bridged City, but I've heard rumors that something terrible has happened at the Academy. If it's true, then I will do what I can to help there."

(Someone did their homework. :-D You find a platinum piece on the floor.)
He listens to Bali talk of his life and dream of studying in The Bridged City. What peaks his interest is the ongoings at the Academy. Perhaps this is related to the missing Pin.
Feeling a little more relaxed and seeing Kendricks balancing act he lets out a cheer! He walks over to the Soldier and pat's him on the back. "Come drink, sing, happy"he motions to the bartender to poor a drink for all on board and places a gold piece on the bar to cover the cost. He even breaks into song - in dwarven
For it's hey-di-lee hi, and ho-di-lee hok, The dwarves strike the earth and make love to the rock! Blood for the Blood God, Blood for Armok! Hey-di-lee hi, and ho-di-lee hok.
"Its freezing out there" Tella says, still shivering "I'm not used to frigid temperatures." she then looks past Kendrick to make sure no one's paying attention, then yanks him behind the boxes "You want to know why I'm here?" she whispers to him.
Balos looks to the bar keep, sets two gold on the counter, then says in common, "Ale for me, mulled wine for the woman over there." Balos then points to Tella before looking back to the bar keep. "Keep the change."
Bilick takes a drink of his ale, and smiles in satisfaction, feeling better now to hear songs of his people in his native language and inspired by the good cheer of the Barbarian.
He joins the group and sings along, in a very poor singing voice, happy for even a second, to avoid thinking about the Bridged City and whatever trouble awaited them there. He certainly hopes they won't run into any of the crowd he used to hang with, all those years ago.

"Yes sir," the bar keep says, and quickly prepares the drinks. He adds a sprig of mint as a garnish to the wine, and brings a bowl of chips with the two drinks.
