Rumors, myths, gossip and a folktale. The story about a cave once used to create magical items in this area is one that is told many times. You always assumed it was part of a story you learned when growing up, not thinking much about it. But then you got a message. Gundren Rockseeker is looking for people that can help him escort supplies to the town of Phandelver because of a big find. Could it be connected to the old stories? Gundren was always up and about it in his spare time! The message didn't say much else but a payment of 10 gold was promised and you had to come to the Grey Goose tavern in Neverwinter.
Who am i and general game rules! Hi! I am Eendmans, pretty new to these message boards but not new to Dungeons and Dragons in general. I want to run this adventure for 5 people in the Play By Post-style, new or old players i don't mind as long as we have fun! I do have some basic rules to make all this a bit easier for me and the people that play.
Expect one post per day. Sometimes it will go faster, sometimes a bit slower. I work fulltime, do other stuff as well so posting is not something i can do any moment on a day. I expect around the same from the players. No need to rush but don't take to long. Just see this as a slow game and it will always go well!
Basic, 5th edition rules. So that is Players Handbook.
Use the text editor when possible. I know being on mobile is a bit hard sometimes so i am not going to whip you for not using. But it is just a bit easier to read a character saying things when it has a color. Use the diceroller in the editor or use 'roll'-function with the brackets and the likes.
Use spoilers for OOC-questions. I will do my best to describe it as good as possible but when something is unclear, just ask.
Have fun! Don't be a dick to other players and don't make fun of spelling (English is not my first language).
This game will be what you make it of it. If you want long in character talks between fights, go ahead!
Character Creation and application So you want to be an adventurer? Or maybe just short on some gold. Follow these easy steps and maybe you will have your chance!
Basic rules, PHB only, no homebrew.
Point buy: 27 points
Create your character on D&D Beyond
Flavor that character (Why does he respond to the message, where does he come from? Doesn't have to be paragraphs long but give me a general idea).
Send me a PM with the total package (Character-sheet-link and flavor!).
Did i miss anything? Send me a PM! No idea how many people will respond but will keep it open at least 24 hours or longer when needed!
grant studied to be a wizard for a military but his pacifist ways got him kicked from the academy, one day, he got the letter from the dwarf gundren rockseeker. Grant and his familiar Arnold the cat now set off for a journey they will remember, to phaldelver

Jaeden is the second son of Lord Meroska of Waterdeep. His older brother, Thurl, is the leader of the Feathergale Society in the Dessarin Valley (Princes of the Apocalypse NPC). Jaeden didn’t want to follow in his brother’s foot steps so headed off up north to seek a way to make his name. He’s driven by fame, not fortune. The more notorious the quest the better. The more famous the patron the better. 10 gold meant nothing to Jaeden, but the chance of a quest related to a myth and a faerie tale? He was all in.

Tahnis was born on the world of Krynn, though his elven mother is from the Fauern city of Evereska. When he came of age, his parents gave him a Faerun map and paid for a planar trip into the Realms. During his journey, Tahnis ran into his elven grandfather, a tomb guardian of Evereka, and later his uncle, an Archmage - both encounters took place outside of Evereska. Tahnis is responding to Gundren's message as a favor to his uncle Tyresian, who has worked with the dwarf a couple of times. He's also curious to explore this new road.

30 years prior...." the beast was on her tail, she could feel it bearing down on her, heard it crash through the under growth. it had chased her for hours, and showed no signs of tiring. she had to reach the crossing place. it was her only hope. the fey wild was tacherous, and tried to hinder her every move- a stray branch here, a twisting vine there. she kept running. as she crested the hill she saw it. the tangled mess of vines that signaled the portal. she shifted into her human form, not slowing her pace. 60 meters.......50 meters........40.........30. she nearly made it, but the beast launched itself over her head and landed in front of her. its snarling mouth flung spittle, and she realized that it had been playing with her. clutching the small bundle to her chest she sunk to her knees. a single tear fell from her eye and landed on the baby's forehead 'make me proud' she sobbed, and she flung the bundle into the air, and a white hawk materialized out of thin air- her spirit guide. it swept over the beasts head, and deposited the baby through the portal. the beast roamed closer. she felt its hot breath on her face. her hawk burst through the portal an landed in front of her. 'no! I told you to leave' she said. you know I could never leave you it replied in her mind. she smiled 'till the end then?'. till the end"
the baby appeared on the other side, in what looks like an inconspicuous cave. he was found and raised by an old hermit who lived outside phandalin. when he came of age, he was sent to the druids of the forest to train as an emissary. he is now finished his training and is about to enter phandalin for the first time. he has decided to take on this quest to garner a reputation and get an audience with the mayor/leader/king of phandalin
Backstory: After Onak left his Tribe he ended up in Neverwinter. There he joined the army and he was good at his job but, not very good taking orders. When his allotted time in the army over he heard about Gundren seeking people to escort some supplies to Phandalin and decided to try and hire on for the job
Background: Noble - spoiler tag to reduce size ( I do have another character with a way simpler theme/background if the following is a bit too convoluted. I'll make a new post with his information if so desired.)
As the scion of the Hammercoin family, the premier coin minting and banking family in the realm, Friedrych was raised in the lap of luxury, free of any worries that might befall him. He spent most of his days turning the silver tongue and spoon he was born with to his advantage to get the maximum reward with minimum effort. This devil-may-care attitude did wound up working against him, for Friedrych was not the heir to the family business, as his older brother Matheus had been groomed his entire life to take that position. While nepotism could have landed him a cushy job, seeing his brother being showered with accolades struck a deep wound in Friedrych's pride. He took an "advanced cut" of his inheritance and took off, vowing only to return to the family estate after he had made a name for himself beyond the family reputation.
Unfortunately, Friedrych had been ill prepared for such an endeavour. He did not possess the raw magical power to bend magic to his will, his laziness kept him from pursuing anything that did not yield immediate results and having been waited on hand and foot his entire life left him lacking in the physical department. But chance came, as chance is wont to do, when Friedrych one night bumped into a small creature. After he apologised to the creature, who seemed Gnomish in nature, Friedrych offeren it a pint at the local tavern. The creature on his part regaled Friedrych with wild tales of might, magic and glory and the more he spoke, the more Friedrych became entranced. After the fifth or sixth mug of ale, the creature presented Friedrych with the key to all his problems: a crystalized butterfly hanging from a silken thread. All he had to do, the creature told Friedrych, was to put it on and be his charming self.
Friedrych regarded the little Gnomish man with a leery eye but alcohol and fatigue had worn down his better judgment. He paid his tab and tossed the creature whatever remained of his coin, grabbed the strange pendant and stumbled outside. The fresh air of the night cleared his head and when Friedrych realised he had just traded away all his coin for a cheap ornament, he stormed back inside to demand his money back. The little man however was nowhere to be found. Equally angry at and disappointed in himself for falling for the sweet words of a conman, Friedrych was about to toss the pendant away when the moonlight stuck it. The butterfly dazzled in a myriad of colours and, having nothing to lose, Friedrych placed the pendant around his neck. He vanished in a silvery mist, with only the laughter and two giddy eyes of a fey playing a prank on someone lingering in the moonlight.
When Friedrych reappeared, he found himself in a clearing in a forest. There was a golden hue in the air, as if the grass itself glowed golden, that was dotted with the colours of a hundred butterflies, each one a different palette, and a heavy fragrance of honey, pinewood and fresh fruit wafted throughout. But it was the sound that was the sweetest. For in the glade, moving around a set table loaded with foodstuffs, was a lady who was the very image of beauty. She had hair woven from strings of moonlight that framed an alabaster face kissed by the sun itself. Light on her feet, she danced in gossamer threads that shimmered in colours dreamed of by poets.
When she spotted poor Friedrych standing there dumbstruck, she was taken aback for a moment but quickly regained her composure and invited him to sit with her at the table and to partake of the meal. The lady was exuberant for most folk, lords and ladies alike, never bothered to show up to her invites and Friedrych was not about to say no to the most beautiful woman he had ever saw. They sat, ate and made merry until the food weighed heavy in his belly and the wine closed his eyes and Friedrych drifted off as he laid his head in the lady's lap for a spell.
When he woke up, he found himself at the edge of the forest none the worse than when he entered it, save for one detail: across his neck, hanging from a silken thread, was a crystalized butterfly that glimmered radiant colours in the sunlight. While his mind was still obscured by the haze of what happened during the night, one feeling defined itself clearly as he rubbed the cobwebs from his eyes: he could feel magic coursing through his body. Surprised yet delighted at this development, Friedrych laughed and began making his way back to town. In his exuberance he failed to notice the large butterfly gazing down at him from the forest canopy nor did he stop to ponder the implications of making a pact with the lonely and often forgotten Lady of Butterflies.
With his newfound abilities, Friedrych set out on his path to greatness. Soon he heared that Gundren Rockseeker was looking for help to get to Phandelver. The pay was not great but the rumour of a cave containing magical items was certainly alluring. Taking what little he had, Friedrych set out on the road to Neverwinter. After all, it's just a trip to Phandalin: what is the worst that could happen?
