“Nestled on the coast of the Azure Sea is Saltmarsh, a sleepy fishing village that sits on the precipice of destruction. Smugglers guide their ships to hidden coves, willing to slit the throat of anyone foolhardy enough to cross their path. Cruel sahuagin gather beneath the waves, plotting to sweep away coastal cities. Drowned sailors stir to unnatural life, animated by dark magic and sent forth in search of revenge. The cult of a forbidden god extends its reach outward from a decaying port, hungry for fresh victims and willing recruits. While Saltmarsh slumbers, the evils that seek to plunder it grow stronger.”
I’d like to invite 5-6 players to begin a Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign in this forum.
If you’ve played or DMed the Ghosts of Saltmarsh adventure before, or if you own it, you will be better off finding another PBP game to join. But if you’re unfamiliar to Saltmarsh and curious what an old-school maritime adventure with shades of Lovecraft might feel like, you’re warmly invited to apply!
Players new to 5e D&D, and players new to Play-by-Post, are both very welcome. I’m happy to help you navigate the game and the interfaces.
You’ll need to commit to the long haul. It’s a marathon, not a sprint; we’ll want to keep it going for the rest of 2020 and beyond. Please commit to posting at least once a day (with only occasional, brief lapses when life intervenes.) It’ll only take you a few minutes! I’ll commit to making this as fun and immersive as I can.
How to apply:
You DON’T need to roll your character yet, or even decide your class or race yet. (But here’s a preview: You’ll start off at first level, and draw from the Player’s Handbook – or possibly Volo’s, Mordenkainen’s, or Xanathar’s – only. No UA, no homebrew – sorry!)
Instead, PM me a little info about yourself and your character:
Your background: What’s your experience with D&D and Play-by-Post games? (New? That’s totally fine!)
Your playing style: What kind of a game do you want to play? How do you like to play? What are you looking for? What’s your ideal PBP D&D game?
Your availability: What time zone are you? PBP is asynchronous, so time is not that important, but what time(s) of day are you typically available to log in and play? Are some days easier or harder for you to play?
Your character in brief: Briefly sketch out the broad strokes for me. What kind of a character are you thinking you’d like to play? (You don’t have to commit yet, and you can keep it brief.)
Your character’s personality: Beyond the standard Traits/Ideals/Bonds/Flaws, what special color do you want to give your character’s personality? How do you want to roleplay them? What makes them different from the generic hero type? What kind of a unique role do you want them to play? Do they have any unusual quirks?
Any questions or concerns? I'm happy to answer and address them!
Note: Characters will start the game as the sole survivors of a wreck of a slave ship. You’ll have time to develop your backstory later. (Note: Saltmarsh has some special backgrounds available, in addition to the standard ones.)
About me: I’ve been DMing D&D since the ‘70s, but I took a 35-year hiatus, so I’ll admit there are still lots of aspects of 5e I haven’t yet mastered. This is only my second go at DMing a PBP game. (The first one is still going strong after six months!) I’ve lived my entire life in an old seafaring community not unlike Saltmarsh.I’m in UTC−04 time (U.S. EDT - Massachusetts).
I won’t make any player decisions for at least 48 hours - Friday evening at the earliest - so take your time!
Your background: experienced dnd player, and I have played a few play by posts. I know most of the rules like the back of my hand until I forget them ;)
Your playing style: I am super easy with gameplay. I love combat, role-play, puzzles........improv as that's what most of my irl sessions turn into;) but in all seriousness I really like it all.
Your availability: I am UK time atm, but I am moving back to Canada (EST) in about 2 weeks (long story). either way I am very available throughout the day, and will be able to usually make multiple posts.
Your character in brief: Will was young when he started his training. but his teacher was a non conformist. an unlicensed wizard and his apprentice. he spent years working on his control, and he barely made a dent into any sort of spellwork. after five years of training Will had only learned a few minor cantrips. on the summer solstice that year, his mentor was attacked by bandits. he managed to kill them with ease, but a lucky shot slipped through his defences. Will is now travelling looking for work, with the remains of his mentors tattered spell book.
Your character’s personality: Will despises warlocks. they are evil beings, who sell that which is not theirs to give. not only do they resort to stealing people and sacrificing them, but they sell their souls. he frequently gets challenged on his views, as most believe that their soul is their own. will adamantly believes that the soul belongs to no-one and that it is not the job of the vessel to dictate its course.
Any questions or concerns? other than how we generate stats? nope. sounds like a whole ton of fun.
Your background: currently running a pbp game on discord. Played here and there on this site a while back
Your playing style: A balanced game with RP and encounters that doesn’t bog itself down with the minutia due to the format
Your availability: EST, usually early morning and then 9-11 at night. Popping in and out throughout the day for quick posts.
Your character in brief: Working on a homebrew for a shaman class. I understand if homebrew isn’t allowed so I would like to reflavor probably Paladin or Druid. Elemental base. Just want to get a feel for the character. Maybe adding a twist for an ocean theme
Your character’s personality: probably a mix beteeen Tonto and Rafiki? Comes off as superstitious and strange but virtues justice, tradition, and honor. As far as roles, I would think more utility/control
My background: I only recently got the 5e Core books, and have never played the game before. I've read through the Essentials Kit Rulebook, so I'm at least somewhat familiar with the basic rules. I run a game of B?X irl, so I'm at least familiar with the basic concept. I have been playing PbP for probably a decade or more.
My playing style: I don't mind an fifty/fifty mix of roleplaying and combat.
My availability: I'm in Mountain Time Zone. I usually check in a couple of times a day at least in PbP games, usually in the morning, and usually at least once in the late afternoon.
My character in brief: I'd like to play a young halfling monk. She's proficient with a sling and probably tries to keep in range distance, engaging in melee if forced.
My character's personality: She was a youth grappling champion in her shire, which drew the attention of a traveling/recruiting monk from a martial arts academy that often stopped at the shire on his travels. The monk convinced her parents to let her come to the academy to train, which she did for 4 years, and is now on her "mission", where she must go on an adventure and test herself and her martial ability. My personality might depend on my character's charisma, intelligence and wisdom, but ideally she's a good natured halfling.
Your background: I played D&D years ago and am just now getting back into it. I’ve never done PBP before but I like the format.
Your playing style: I like a balanced game with encounters, good role playing, and puzzles.
Your availability: Central Time but I can definitely log on each day to post.
Your character in brief: Bramnus is a hill dwarf barbarian who has been trained by his clan for adventure. His clan lives on the outskirts of Faerûn as the first line of defense. Bramnus must now leave his clan, as is custom, and set out on adventure to help right the wrongs of the realm while spreading his clan’s name throughout the land.
Your character’s personality: Bramnus is a brown skinned, black haired, brown eye hill dwarf with a strong moral compass and a thirst for adventure. He believes in being as honest and pure as possible so he doesn’t drink as not to dull his senses. His moral compass can make him distrustful of others and a bit of a standoff. He is loyal and compassionate.
Background: I’ve been playing some sort of dnd for almost a decade. Started with my dads old AD&D books, went on to 3.5 and pathfinder, and now have ~a year of dnd 5e. I have a lot of play by post experience in pathfinder and 4 or 5 decent length campaigns on dndbeyond and am running a pbp on here.
Play Style: I am very mechanics focused when building my characters but in play I like to interact a lot with other players and npcs. Puzzles that use character knowledge or abilities I love, player puzzles are less my speed. I love combat that uses terrain or positioning or other interesting mechanics. In pbp I have done heavy combat and enjoyed, heavy rp and enjoyed. As long as the dm and players are fun to play with I don’t really care about style.
Availability: I am mountain but am online at very random times throughout the entire day. Depending on life and work I can be on from 6pm-5am or from 7am-9pm. I post at least once per day depending on what others are posting.
Character ideas: I like to play frontline characters and gish builds. Cavalier fighter is a character I have been interested in, non-hexblade bladelocks seem like fun. I do enjoy druids/clerics if we want a more caster heavy support build, especially if you allow circle of spores from the Ravnica book. I really like making characters with backstories linked to other players.
Personality: I do as low edge as I can builds. New heroes who just set out and are discovering the world are my general favorites. Depending on how much you want to work backstories into the story vs have us fit into the adventure, I either write a long one with plenty of things for you to use, or a barebones one that allows me to fit in easily with the party. General personalities I like are low wisdom foolhardy naïve characters or heroes trying to prove themselves having just left home.
Questions: Just sad lurker in the deep hasn’t been printed yet, so thematic, oh well.
If you want more specific ideas on characters just let me know. It sounded like vague was what you wanted so I went with that.
My playing style: I enjoy role playing and combat equally. I'm not very good at puzzles, so expect to give me some serious hints to solve story critical puzzles.
My availability: I'm in EST and check in frequently throughout the day.
My character in brief: I'd like to play a variant human ranger or fighter. If escaped slaves, picturing him as a young hunter that was nabbed when they came ashore for water. He will be focusing on archery.
My character's personality: He is a youth with little knowledge outside of the forest and hunting. Perhaps a little sea knowledge depending on the amount of time on the ship.
Your background: Been playing PbP on here and on discord for quite a while now.
Your playing style: I love role play and combat equally but I'm not a writer so sometimes by post are bland. I'm trying to get better.
Your availability: I am eastern standard time (USA). I post at least once a day. Weekends are a little less (family stuff)
Your character in brief: I have never played a support character like a druid or cleric. Would like to give it a try.
Your character’s personality: I was thinking of playing a chipper English gentleman type. Loves nature and life. Will go out of his way to help others especially the underdog. Doesn't care much for government and laws for they always oppress people.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Elon Andrael- High Elf sorcerer- Waterdeep Dragon Heist
Tomac- goliath barbarian- Yet Another Storm Kings Thunder
Tharn Redeye - Half-orc Fighter - Heroes of Wildemount Kellen Belladar- Human Cleric - Troubles in the Wildwood: Blackthorn Brin Rainblade - Human Barbarian - The Great Orca Dungeon
Question: My character has already been generated but never played. If selected would that be allowed to be used in this adventure or do we all have to start from scratch?
Your background: New-ish to PBP, been playing since early 2020. Been playing DnD for a little under a year
Your playing style: What kind of a game do you want to play? How do you like to play? What are you looking for? What’s your ideal PBP D&D game
Your availability: I'm EST and I with rare exception will usually be able to post at least 1-2 per day.
Your character in brief: I'm thinking of playing a Female Rouge Swashbuckler who dreamed of being a knight but was forbidden from pursuing that dream for some reason. I imagine making her bulky and being a pseudo tank.
Your character’s personality: I imagine her young, brash/ confidant and constantly trying to prove herself (could probably be baited into doing something). Due to her past, I imagine her also having a general disdain for the laws, authority and "proper" way of doing things.
** I am closing this thread to new applications. I will be in touch with applicants very soon. **
It's great there's such a demand for new games. Unfortunately, it also means I have a lot of applications to read tonight. I will try to make decisions in the next 18 hours.
I want to thank everyone for applying. I think we have our party of six confirmed.
I apologize to the 28 other applicants whom I have to turn down - some really wonderful players among you. I hate having to say "no" to so many. Clearly there is an unmet demand for more games!
Thanks again for your interest! C
