Hi! Pretty experienced (~2 years) player, accustomed to PBP on discord, and would be able to assist with Avrae.
Nylia Vask (Fallen Aasimar Paladin/Sorcerer) is a Lawful Evil mercenary and soldier. She maintains a polite and respectful, yet cold and professional appearance and mannerisms, follows orders from higher-ups to the letter, and is a stern and tough leader to any she has power over. Left to her own devices, she tends not to cause wanton destruction, but will not show mercy and is not above torture when necessary. She also tends not to trust easily - her most steadfast allies are the armor, blade and shield she carries.
very interested. a couple of questions: 1. are you going to allow multi-classing? 2. how steep is the discord learning curve?....I have only played face to face (years ago) & PbP here.
You have a lot to choose from. Most have more experience with discord than I but my character would be a Variant Human Barbarian (Totem - eventually) that couldn't get along with his Tribal Elders so has left the "herd" and has noticed there is something strange going on with the Giants and although he has left his tribe he is concerned about what will happen if the Giants cross path with his tribe.
originally considered a Ranger/Druid Multi but a Barbarian might be fun!
Hi, Sounds interesting. This would be my first PbP, have only been playing for a round 6 months. I would like to play a ranged fighter with an inferiority complex, never having been strong enough to be a 'real' fighter, and not having any power like his team mates.
Hey! I'm a fairly experienced player with a lot of knowledge of Avrae and the various alliases you can add to the program.
My character idea is Celia: A neutral good winged tiefling monk born of a human mother and infernal father who rejected her infernal heritage and escaped to the Order of the Sun Soul to try and find peace in her seemingly dark soul. She binds her wings to her back and rarely uses them, feeling that they are a reminder that her 'gift' was merely a reminder of the dark mark she was born under.
Yoyo, I have ~1.5 years of 5e experience and nearly 8 years of AD&D + Pathfinder experience. I love playing interesting to RP characters and RPing with other people. I am a consistent player, currently in 2 other PbP (One is Crispy's) and DMing another. I also run 2 irl campaigns through roll20.
I generally prefer to fill roles in parties, but here are a few quick characters so you have an idea of what I'll play:
A druid (moon probably since I haven't played one yet), dwarf - LG
Growing up deep in Citadel Felbarr, Torlin was raised with a deep appreciation for earth and stone. She spent her early years training to be a warrior. Both of her parents fought alongside the hero-king Emerus when he retook the citadel. Raised with stories of his bravery, Torlin wanted to become a member of the king's guard. However in her 43rd year, Torlin discovered that unlike many of her brethren, her natural affinity for the earth was more than just the normal dwarven connection to the earth. She found that she could manipulate the earth, and the plants and animals that inhabit it. When she told her parents about her newly found power, they both agreed that she should go seek out other druids, and learn how to better control her powers. So she set out to find other druids and discover more of her powers, carrying her parents sword and shield. Torlin knows that she has the support of her family, and wants to be able to return to aid her people. Growing up in a dwarven citadel, one that had been taken multiple times, and growing up learning of the many foes in the world, Torlin doesn't see her druid powers as a way to aid nature, but to bend it to her will to defend people from evil.
A warlock, lurker of the deep if that UA is allowed pact of the blade, probably dragonborn - NG - may take 1 lvl of fighter for armor and weapons
Gwing grew up among her tribe on the Korinn Archipelago. She was a hunter and wandered the island and the nearby waters for prey. One day, when she was out hunting, she wandered upon a large ship. The ship was a slaver's ship and they kidnapped her from her island. For the next few years, she was a oar slave on the ship. One day, the ship came across an ancient kraken. As the ship went down. Gwing felt the water fill her lungs. Before her, she saw the mighty kraken, and it saw her. The next thing Gwing remembers, if waking up on an island in the middle of no where. A small fishing boat saw her. They offered her a ride back to the main land. Now Gwing has visions sent by the mighty kraken, although she doesn't know why.
A conquest paladin of Talos - half-elf - CG
Koda grew up in a small town along the Sword Coast. There he witnessed the power of a storm first hand. Living in a small, poor, fishing village, Koda was a ships hand as soon as he was old enough to help on the fishing vessels. Often he would be caught out in a storm on the ocean. In the clouds, he saw a mighty figure. The man was tall, broad-shouldered, bearded, and had one good eye. Koda began to pray to whatever this being was, that he may make it home. In his ears, the name Talos echoed like thunder. When the fishing boat returned, Koda began to read everything he could about Talos, the uncaring, destructive, dark side of nature. But Koda saw more than an evil god of destruction, Talos causes destruction to those who don't believe, he makes life unpredictable and thus allows you to rise above your station, he shows that life is short so you must take what you want from this uncaring world. Strength is power, those who lack power, simply need to be taught their strength. If you are strong, you can stand up to those who would hold you down. Only those who learn to stand strong can grow and lead. Koda realized that he could do so much more than survive in his fishing village, he could go out and take his life into his own hands, and make a living. He spent the last of his coin to buy a massive hammer with Talos's symbol engraved on the side and set off to grab what he could from this life before a random event sent him on to the afterlife.
1 level fighter, the rest bard, half-orc - LN
Murgen was born to the streets of Neverwinter. He fought, stole, and begged for food all his early years. That was until he met the Company, a mercenary crew. Impressed by the soldiers, Murgen signed on. When the Company left the city, so did Murgen. He traveled, fought, and lived with the Company until they got hired to defend a small town from a large gnoll pack that had been raiding the area. The Company was outnumbered. As they were being slaughtered, Murgen and a few other young members were ordered to run. The Captain told them, “Preserve the Company’s memories and live.” Murgen and his five fellow Company members ran. Making his way back to Neverwinter. Murgen settled in, to begin writing the history of the Company. Recording all the stories he had heard about his fellow soldiers. But as he worked, he realized he missed being on the road, missed his friends. So grabbing the book he had been writing, Murgen set off to find a new adventure.
Also I have been looking to either play or run this campaign for a while, the premise is really cool to me.
Hello! I've been playing for about a year now, mostly on discord cause I just like the setup better.
I would like to play Warren, a chaotic good gnome ranger. Gnomes love to tinker but someone has to defend the town so Warren picked up a bow and did that. Eventually he became enough of an influence in town that some younger gnomes followed his path, leaving him free to range further and further away without worry.
Second Concept: a lawful good halfling grave cleric
Osborn is a former halfling general who's last battle was so ruinous that it cost the settlement almost an entire generation. As penance he became the grave keeper. With the upheavals happening all around the people have once again turned to their old leader for guidance.
i’ve been playing dnd for about 10 years now, but I’ve been very active in PBP for the last few months. I am an experienced DM and really love telling a good story, i would rather have a compelling story over an overpowered character.
im eastern time zone so I’m only a couple hours behind you in Greenwich.
i have a few character ideas depending on what other people want to play in the campaign but my top 3 would be:
Maya "The Destructive Drunkard" Clanless (Half-orc Monk gladiator)
A cheer rises up through the arena, Maya wipes the blood off her forehead as it streaks through her mess of black hair. She raises her fists high, like a conductor motions the swell of the orchestra, the crowd goes wild. Her opponent stands back up, a massive, grey-skinned barbarian, screams into maya's face, spit flying, maya closes her eyes until the scream is over, "Remind me to give you a mint after this, Grokk. Here, this should tide you over." She spins around, setting her heel about 4 inches into the side of his head, sending him flying to the side. Another cheer from the crowd as the tall, olive-skinned half-orc cracks her neck before rushing forward. Just another day in the office.
Dr. McCheshire: Gnome professor on sabbatical to study giant culture (wizard)
"-And that is why you should approve my trip to the savage north to study the politics between different factions in the Ordning, thank you." The short mustachioed gnome steps down from the podium to scattered applause, he hums to himself, feeling pleased with how the presentation went. Dr. McCheshire, professor of Illusion magic and the leading researcher of the lost empire of Ostoria. Sitting out in the hall while the academic board voted on his proposal, Dr. M pulls out a pipe and lights it. With a flick of his finger, the smoke sets about twisting and forming into shapes of castles on clouds, figures chucking boulders at flying dragons and explosions setting the castles ablaze before crumbling into nothingness. He chuckles at his own illusion, when the door opens a crack. "You've been approved Dr. M, you'll leave next week." A squeak of excitement bubbles out of the old gnome as he leaps to his feet, he rushes over and vigorously shakes his peer's hand, "Thank you thank you thank you!"
Caspian, prince of the tropics: Triton prince traveling the world on a whim (bard)
"Sir." a retainer takes one knee before the red coral throne. "The preparations have been made, are you absolutely certain you must leave for the surface world? Not only the surface, but the savage north?" Caspian, prince of the Tropics turns to set his feet back down onto the floor from the side of the throne, "I wish to explore the world of sky and mountains, lieutenant. And my wish is of course, law. I appreciate your concern but please remember, I AM prince, and thus must fully understand the politics of not just our kingdom, but the kingdoms of all faerun." Caspian stands to his full height, his blue hair flowing slightly from below the tied bun. He reaches down and pulls his regal blade from the it's resting place beside the throne. The lieutenant raises his eyes pleadingly, "Please, your majesty, consider at least, not traveling alone. Even if you only take Patsy, your valet, maybe we could...." "Enough! I will accede to taking my valet, and will travel with some adventurers, does that put your quivering mind at ease? I am more than capable at protecting myself on this dangerous journey, but if it will ease your mind, then I shall surround myself with powerful warriors and spellcasters."
I have some experience with dnd like around 30 hrs or so with various campaigns. A few of them being one shots and others ending after 3-4 sessions because of commitment issues of other player/ dm. I am currently in a DnD campaign on roll 20 been going on solid for around 3 months now. As for PbP campaigns im part of a Pokemon Tabletop Universe server on discord so I have used a dice bot. I did also try a few living world servers on discord as well but they are not my thing as there is very little RP involved in the living world and I like RP. TBH i have never played PbP for Dnd and I would love to try it out.
I want to play a Forge Cleric. I dont have any backstory/ background as of now just probably something like I found a single piece of weapon / armour of my deity and now I want to find the rest and restore it, not so that I can use it for myself but for the future hero who is destined to wield it according to some prophecy told to be by my mentor.
As far as gaming background goes, I have a little over 2 years experience on PbP for 5e, and a little less than that rl games. Otherwise, no other experiences to speak of TTRPG speaking outside of 5e, barring some observed Call of Cthulu and Pathfinder 2E unfortunately. I haven't done a discord game yet, but I'm interested all the same!
WHen it comes to character background, I'm not fully set on the race yet between Human and Half-Orc. I think I'd rather let party composition inform that to a degree. But, here's the two:
Obaz - City Watch: A son of a sheperd turned City Watchman in Neverwinter through the influence of his Uncle; who wishing to fed a young Obaz' growing interest in more heroic pursuits, but keep away from the adventurer's life, helped him get enlisted. Unfortunately, he ran afoul of his commanding officers one too many times on the subject inhabitants of the more slum related areas of the city, leading to his termination. Unwilling to return to the ranch, he went southwards to Waterdeep, hoping to find renewed opportunity. By happenstance enroute to the city, he made a friend of a halfling harper and one of many caravans along the way, whose tales and strange collection would go on to encourage a fascination in ancient civilizations and magics, and tempt him tempt him once more in expanding his view of 'available' job markets.
Class Fighter - Potential(Samurai, Eldritch Knight, or Rune Knight(If UA allowed)).
Race: Human(Variant)
Gell Greystone - Bounty Hunter: Born into something of a "family" operated mercenary band, Gell's fate seemed set in stone from the moment of birth. When all he wished for was a quieter life. To return to a time when at least some of part of his bloodline were more hunters than soldier of fortune or fullblown warriors most came to expect. He got his wish eventually, in a matter of speaking, when his mother, tired of moodiness, sent him to live with his cousin(the only other family to leave the band) in the cities, figuring the contrasting life and the hidden thorns that came with it might teach him a lesson of the dangers of living outside the band. However, with the aid of his cousin, he adapted and thrived as a bounty hunter in waterdeep, living closer to ideals than he ever dreamed of. Unfortunately, in underestimating the connections of one target, he would need take his leave for a time.
Class Ranger(later multi-Barbarian if allowed) - Potential(Monster Slayer, Beastmaster, or Hunter)
Race: Half-Orc
(My apologies if the backgrounds were a bit "more" than the expected some. I never quite know how to gauge how much is just enough. X) )
Hi! This all sounds pretty interesting. I have about a year and a half playing D&D, mostly through voice. Despite that, I have over 6 years of more general text based roleplay. A little new to using dice bots, but I do have a little bit of experience with Avrae from some other PbPs.
I have two general character ideas that I can play and flesh out more, depending on the party.
Cili Gentlewater is a Lawful Neutral Halfling Shadow Sorcerer. As her lastname suggests, her family has a long history of sailing, and living by the water. Despite that, her eyes have always been set on land. She became a merchant in Waterdeep, working in a curiosity shop, which mostly attracted people visiting the city. The owner of the shop requested she retrieve an item for him in Luskan and meet with a client, who had offered to sell a variety of items. The trip there was uneventful, and the items were bought. Cili barely started her journey back to Waterdeep when her cart was attacked by bandits. While not much of a fighter, she tried her best to fend them off. During her scuffle with the bandits, one of the items she had picked up broke. It turns out it was actually magical, and breaking it caused it to release its magic in an explosion. When she woke up, she was in a kind woman's house, who had found her on the side of the road passed out. It did not take long for the halfling to find out she had new magical abilities. Worried about being in trouble with her boss, Cili decided to go out as an adventurer, to make some coin in hopes to repay him, and to explore her new abilities.
Leonie Karisen is a Neutral Half-elf Fighter (most likely arcane archer or samurai). She was raised by her father, an elf. The two lived in Daggerford, and from an early age Leonie was trained in combat. Her father was part of the militia, and also a tailor. She joined the militia as soon as she could, and often went out on hunting trips with her friends. A confident young woman, she realized that staying in one place was making her restless. So she left the militia to head north, to put her training to better use, and to search for new challenges. She stayed in small towns or with groups of people, but never for too long, as she is always looking for new problems to face.
I've been DMing 2 groups for about a year now and love the idea of a play by post game.
My character idea would be Kalam Levain. A gnome wizard, student of The Host Tower in Luskan, recently out and about working on finding a way to bring about instant yeast to the good people of Faerun.
I’ve been playing (a lot of pbp and a bit of live gaming) for several years, all 5e. I’ve been DMing (some live and a lot of pbp on discord) for 9-ish months, and I love it.
I want to play:
Lokemos - feral tiefling - rogue - entertainer
Lokemos is any town’s new gossip. He loves hearing gossip, and spreading it further with a grade A re-enactment. Not everyone appreciates his fervor for stories, which leaves him out of work regularly. He also likes to maintain a certain reputation to keep enemies at bay or at least thoughtful about trying anything.
I’m hoping to make Lokemos a bard without much magic, aka: a rogue, probably swashbuckler, maybe mastermind in the long run. Maybe a couple levels in bard depending on how long it goes.
Im not fixated on the race. I could mix it up to play another race.
Yes to multi-classing, but I’d like it to be referenced in your backstory - i.e. it can’t just be a random new class, it has to gel with your character
Discord is easy to get a hang of, Avrae I’m still learning myself, so we’ll start simple and build up.
Seeing some great responses here, thank you. I’ll close to new applicants on Tuesday, and then take a couple days to properly review everyones’ posts. I’ll aim to be up and running to start by the end of next weekend.
Hi there! I'm interested in this pbp campaign. I'm very new to D&D, I've got about two weeks of experience. However, I've spent a lot of my time reading, watching, and listening to D&D-related topics, so I'm fairly familiar with most of the common parts of D&D. I'm very used to Discord, having spent the better part of the last three years using Discord.
Okay, here's my idea for a character:
Althaea Sylvaranth, a female wood elf druid (who will probably be going into the Circle of Dreams), wishes to bring joy to the sorrowing hearts of mortals in her own way. She's a young, innocent, and cheerful elf who only wishes the best for everyone, and is deeply hurt seeing others hurting each other.
Her alignment is Chaotic Good, and I'll be able to develop a more in-depth backstory with a bit of help from the DM, saying what I can and can't do, and having a bit of knowledge of the lore of the world.
Another idea:
Trick Savi, a female tiefling, is a young, unpredictable warlock (maybe multiclass into a bard? I'd need to involve that into the backstory somehow) who loves pranks, jokes, and mischief in general. While she's definitely chaotic, she's a good friend, albeit she might make light of things too much.
Again, I'd need to work with the DM to develop a backstory that's more in-depth. This little one's alignment is Chaotic Neutral, with a tendency towards Chaotic Good (?)
Hello! I’m very interested in playing in this game. I’m the perpetual DM - currently running 2 games via Roll20 using DNDBeyond resources - and would appreciate the opportunity to participate as a player. I have been playing 5e since it’s inception and playing RPGs for several years prior. I have experience running and playing play by post games via RPG Crossing, though it’s been a few years since these games.
I’m very interested in playing a dwarf of mostly martial class - potentially a fighter, paladin or barbarian, maybe even ranger with a focus on melee. My character, Buerin Fleetforge hails from the Snake Hills. He’s ever an independent contractor, dealing with minor nuisances for townsfolk as he travels in the local area. He’s known for removing ghouls or driving Kobold tribes from civilized areas for a fair price. When giants are involved, however, Buerin seeks out assistance in the form of fellow adventurers.
Buerin would fill the niche of gruff but amicable damage absorber for the party. I’d have a great time playing him with just about any group with any mix of RP, combat and exploration.
I grew up paying D&D, and COVID has brought me back into it via PbP. I currently have characters in three campaigns, but the pace of the posting and willingness to engage in dialogue has been a little disappointing, so your intention to select committed players and promote roleplay is right up my alley. I work from home as well (albeit in Australia) and can post at whatever frequency the campaign requires. I have been looking for a 'long' campaign to dive into and this one takes me back to the book series The Twilight Giants which has one of my favourite characters in it, Tavis Burden, the firbolg giant and scout, an outsider in the world of men that is set against the giants, which is the character that I think would be perfect for this campaign.
Here are a couple of potential characters that I think would be a good fit. Let me know if they are of interest. Cheers.
Goliath Ranger (preferred) or Barbarian (both Chaotic Neutral)
Living a harsh & challenging existence high in the frigid wilds of the mountains, his world was shattered when he returned from hunting to find the mangled bodies of his clansmen littered throughout their settlment, their blood staining the snow along with that of a couple of Frost Giants that had been fallen during the raid. Dropping the dead mountain goat from his shoulders, his thoughts went immediately to his wife as he madly searched for her amongst the tents, a realisation slowly dawning that she, along with many other women of the clan, were not amongst the fallen. In a daze he gathered his weapon and travelling pack and headed out into the mountains, the footfalls and blood an obvious trail as they led higher into the peaks and to the frost giant fortress, his already cold heart breaking after a day and a night of careful scouting as he realised he was powerless to save Arianna. Vowing to return to free her, he finds himself looking to build his skill and strength in.......<insert hook here>.
The Ranger I would look to take down the Gloomstalker path, which aligns best to being a bow wielding cold hearted sniper, and maybe build out to include Rogue levels after he hits 5th level. As a Barbarian, he would obviously be much more of a revenge seeking melee combatant (perhaps taking Ancestral Guardian or Path of the Zealot - as both would tie in to the back story).
As an alternative......
Variant Human (or perhaps Eladrin) Hexblade Warlock (Lawful Neutral)
Grixeor has lived by the sea his whole life, and having come of age followed his father into the militia guard (hence the martial direction with Hex Warrior) only to stumble upon a bottle washed up on shore that contained a corroded key. With curiousity getting the better of him he unstoppered the bottle and shook the key into his palm. Much to his horror he found himself suddenly unable to move, with the key somehow burning into his flesh. Screaming in pain, his mind was joined with another "WELCOME TO MY SERVICE MORTAL...SERVE ME WELL" to only words he heard before passing out. Waking, he opened his fist to find his palm bearing the brand of the key, and only a faint recollection of the presence that he experienced. Over the coming weeks he began to feel different, a latent dark power brewing, and had episodes of memory loss, being unable to account for time, and occaisionally finding himself somewhere that he had no idea where he was, and with an urge to seek out, something....****y to wake one morning to see the giants ships on the horizon......
Hello!
If you’re interested in playing in a PBP game being run by an experienced but very rusty DM, then look no further!
I’ve found myself playing in a couple PBP games, and I thought, given the disparity in the DM/Player ratio that I'd have a go at running a PBP game myself with one of the published modules - Storm King's Thunder, set in the north of Faerûn. (This will be the first PBP game I’ve run, but I’m getting back into the swing of DMing in general, so I’m sure all will be well!)
Logistics
- I'll create a campaign here for content sharing, but will run the actual game in Discord (text only, not voice) using Avrae for dice rolling
- I'd like to aim for people to post at least once per day on average, but I know people get busy so missing a day or so now and then isn't a problem
- I'm based in the UK, working from home full time, so will mostly post either lunchtime or evenings UK Time
- I'll leave applications open until I have a good selection of applicants, but at least 3 days, then I’ll PM the successful people with a link to the discord server / DDB campaign link
What I'm looking for
- Any level of experience, with a willingness to RP your characters rather than 'fast-forwarding' between combats :-)
- Share some information about your gaming background and your ideas for a level 1 character below, with some of their background - you can actually create the character once invited to the campaign
- Stats will be standard array or point buy
- Any content from PHB, Sword Coast Adventurers Guide or Xanathar's Guide to Everything. No homebrew, and will consider UA by exception
- I'll select to give a balance of experience and classes, between 4 & 6 players
- Good or neutral alignments preferred - could stretch to a LE character for an experienced player with a compelling case
Postscript on Conduct
- It should go without saying, but I operate a zero tolerance approach to racism, homophobia and misogyny in my games.
- All players should feel comfortable at all times (even if their characters are not!) - tell me at any time if you don’t.
- Expect some degree of robust language where it adds value (I'm a British adult who uses the full span of the language). You don't have to swear, but you should be comfortable with others doing so when appropriate, subject to the points above

Sounds interesting. I've been playing on paper for a few years and here for a few months (there is a link to a campaign I'm running in my signature).
Would you allow the Tortle race? I have a nice concept for a Storm Sorcerer and believe that would be the best race for him.

Thanks
Kayla
Gronk in Bastion, Kingdom of Medrin Elixisys in Talaveroth (Team 2) Uthal in Lost Continent of Theviranne
Hey Jarvik!
i’ve been playing dnd for about 10 years now, but I’ve been very active in PBP for the last few months.
Even if you only take Patsy, your valet, maybe we could...."
"Enough! I will accede to taking my valet, and will travel with some adventurers, does that put your quivering mind at ease? I am more than capable at protecting myself on this dangerous journey, but if it will ease your mind, then I shall surround myself with powerful warriors and spellcasters."
Corinne Hemlock: Dhampir courtesan and dusk huntress
Kraig Bronzeaxe: Dwarven archaeologist and guerilla archer
Hey,
I have some experience with dnd like around 30 hrs or so with various campaigns.
When you realize you're doing too much: Signature.
The ever growing document of character concepts can never be too long, can it?
Hey! Thanks for putting this out there!
I've been DMing 2 groups for about a year now and love the idea of a play by post game.
My character idea would be Kalam Levain. A gnome wizard, student of The Host Tower in Luskan, recently out and about working on finding a way to bring about instant yeast to the good people of Faerun.
Hope to hear from you :)
Paladin - warforged - orange
@Templar32
Yes to multi-classing, but I’d like it to be referenced in your backstory - i.e. it can’t just be a random new class, it has to gel with your character
Discord is easy to get a hang of, Avrae I’m still learning myself, so we’ll start simple and build up.
@seldim Sorry, no Tortles. :-(
Seeing some great responses here, thank you.
Sylcan Naïlo - Eladrin Blood Hunter - DragonDenn's Dragonlords | Althaea Sylvaranth - Wood Elf Druid - JorvikDave's Storm King's Thunder | Ekane - Half-orc Warlock - Murk Over Gladerown | Aoth Meliamne - Aasimar Sorcerer - WoobyDoobyDoo's Vraleon
I also DM RemCultist's Frozen Sick
Thanks for you consideration!
Hi.
